Your guide to Mission Bay, San Diego

Welcome to Mission Bay

San Diego has long had a reputation as a fun place to visit. This city is all about sun, surf, and boldface entertainment options. Perhaps no neighborhood better embodies this ethos than Mission Bay. This enclave is home to one of the city’s singular attractions, Mission Bay Aquatic Park, a massive manmade fun zone carved out of natural wetlands and marshes that plays host to every conceivable water sport. Nearby, kids and adults delight at the retro offerings of Belmont Park, a circa-1925 oceanfront amusement park. Both are cradled by Mission Beach and Pacific Beach, which meet to create three miles of sand and surf dotted with volleyball courts, bonfire pits, and sunbathers.

The best time to stay in a vacation rental in Mission Bay, San Diego

San Diego’s reputation as a land of perpetual sunshine is well earned — you’re likely to encounter warm, sunny days suitable for outdoor fun all year round. Crowds swell in summer as families take advantage of all the kid-friendly fun on tap, and beaches can get crowded. During Spring Break, expect young revelers to hit the sand. Thanks to the accommodating weather, there are festivals for every season, celebrating Mardi Gras, local cuisine, and Fleet Week.

Top things to do in Mission Bay, San Diego

Belmont Park

Belmont Park is a classic seaside amusement park, awash in the scents of cotton candy and popcorn. Its crown jewel is the Giant Dipper, a 75-foot-tall wooden coaster that boasts more than 2,800 feet of track. Although you’ll be shooting along at 48 mph, try to take a moment and appreciate the incredible view of the nearby ocean. In addition to classic carnival rides, you can also try your hand at ziplining, mini-golf, and rock climbing.

Mission Bay Aquatic Park

This 4,235-acre aquatic park is the largest of its kind in the United States, offering a network of sandy beaches, islands, and swimming coves. If it can be done on or in water, you can do it here. On any given day you’ll find people surfing, paddleboarding, boating, fishing, swimming, or windsurfing. You can rent equipment on site, and there are changing rooms and lockers available, too. There’s plenty to explore, including Fiesta Island, where dogs can run off leash and bonfire rings spring to life at night.

Mission Beach and Pacific Beach

Amusement parks and oceanfront playgrounds are big fun, but when you’re ready for classic beach action, head to these two popular hangouts. Rent a bike and tool along the paved esplanade that runs along both beaches, or simply walk along the water’s edge. Try surfing at Tourmaline Surf Park, favored by beginners for its gentle waves, or get sweaty at one of the public volleyball courts. There are plenty of restaurants and bars lining these beaches, which — along with the colorful buzz of Belmont Park — help contribute to a convivial, party atmosphere.
