Take a single trip for $2 or rent it for 24 hours for $8. These bike stations are available all over the city. Ride it then leave it at another station.

There's a DC bike share at the bottom of Adams Mill Rd, right at the entrance of the zoo. Always a good way to get around but be sure and be careful and bike defensively. DC is a city of transients and you can never count on drivers to yield to you.
