Places to stay in La Crosse

Places to stay in La Crosse
Hike, bike and ski the Driftless region. Fish, sail and hunt. Recreation abounds. Meet friends midway. Join a family celebration. Enjoy the culture and excitement of downtown La Crosse. Rest after work, medical visits or travel. Breezy Point Cottage will be your home while you visit La Crosse. Our cottage is also a destination itself if you are looking for quiet to create, work, spend time with another, or just get away from it all. Our guests enjoy the natural beauty, comfort and charm.
At Breezy Point you will have complete access to our lake frontage with picnic table and dock on Lake Onalaska though the view of the lake is limited from the cottage. The sparkling clean rooms include a full kitchen and bath, one private bedroom with a new queen bed and a common/living area. That space includes a very comfortable new full sofa sleeper and another new sofa to stretch out on as well as a dining/work area. A smart TV with digital analog (antenna) channels and Netflix and Roku is provided. We do not provide cable but you will have many viewing options. We offer a large outside deck for relaxation and dining with a limited view of the lake. There’s plenty of off-street parking for your car and boat. All furnishings and mechanicals at the cottage are new and accented with original art and authentic antiques. Décor is informal and in good taste without being stuffy. Please take the time to read everything on this listing about the cottage and our house rules now so you will know if our place will meet your expectations. Your questions are welcome.
Breezy Point Cottage is located near the lakefront at the edge of a residential area on French Island, which is within the City of La Crosse. Everything on the island is within a couple miles of us, including the airport, !-90, and the Mississippi lock and dam system, though none of these networks have any visual or sound effect on our location. Nelson County Park and a private sailboat club are located at the northern end. There are several marinas on either side of French Island. We have a few casual restaurants/bars, some with entertainment, as well as a grocery store and a couple gas stations. You will find many more recreational, cultural, dining, entertainment and shopping opportunities in the greater La Crosse area on the "mainland", just a few minutes away. Please take the time to read everything on this listing about the cottage and our house rules now so you will know if our place will meet your expectations. Your questions are welcome.
  • Awesome little cabin. Cozy. Nice decor. Great access to the river.

  • The cottage was very cozy and quiet. A great alternative to staying right in town - it's close, but peaceful + comfortable. Pam was easily available by message if I had any questions. I recommend!

  • This cottage is super clean, close to everything you might want to explore in the area and hosted by truly super hosts. The decorating is charming, the sofas comfy and it's a perfect spot for retreat. The amenities and personal touches exceed most other AirBnBs I have visited. I would love to return in the summer or fall.

    Laura2020-02-10T00:00:00Z
  • I definitely recommend this adorable, sunny cottage! Clean and comfortable with a well-stocked kitchen if you plan to cook and plenty of towels and linens. The cottage is on the host’s property, as described- but still is very private, we didn’t see them during our stay. Self check-in was easy and the bed was comfortable. The cottage is about a 15 minute drive from downtown La Crosse- this spot is a no-brainer if you’ve got a car and want a spot near the water.

  • Amazing! Amazing! Amazing! If I could give it 100 starts I would! Michelle and Charlie (the wonder pup) are amazing hosts, the best I have ever had! The space is eclectic, with a little bit of mid century modern mixed in. The bed was more then comfortable, and the shared spaces were wonderful! I know that anytime I am in La Crosse I will definitely be staying here!

  • Wonderful place to stay. Very easy to communicate

    Riley2020-02-25T00:00:00Z
  • Beautiful home! Michelle kept me updated on road conditions and welcomed me on a rather cold night. The bed was very warm and Charlie the dog was a great and friendly companion. The street nearby seemed pretty busy at certain times of day but it was very quiet inside the bedroom and didn't interrupt my sleep. I would definitely stay again if I was visiting the area once more!

    Natasha2020-02-19T00:00:00Z
  • You will not be disappointed with your stay at Michelles home. I very much look forward to my next stay with her. Everything you need is in her home. The fresh coffee, great conversation, and sweet puppy Charlie are all bonuses!

  • Lovely home to spend time to spend time at

    Lucas2020-02-11T00:00:00Z
  • We loved our stay at Michelle’s! We have a dog that is not good with other dogs or animals, and she was so accommodating and amazingly patient with us. The room and whole house was spotless and seriously the best decorated house I’ve ever seen. Michelle welcomed us warmly and was available all weekend to answer our questions. Truly one of my best Airbnb experiences!

We love the Coulee Region and want you to love your experience here too! Our neighborhood is friendly and within walking distance from coffee shops, restaurants & the Village Shopping Center. The unit is clean and modern. You'll have privacy when you come and go since the entrance is just up the stairs from your reserved parking stall behind the house.
This is an upper stairs unit so plan to climb one flight of stairs. Inside, we tried to think of what would make you most comfortable. Both bedrooms have room darkening curtains & comfortable bedding. The kitchen is set up with everything you need. Summer farmer's markets are Fri. PM and Sat. AM & Festival Foods is just a few blocks away.

    Lisa2020-02-16T00:00:00Z
  • My daughter and I came for a work event and really appreciated coming back to Jamie’s peaceful, cozy place to relax. It was quiet, neat, and I like how it was decorated. The day we were leaving a snowstorm came through and she graciously let us stay into the afternoon until the weather cleared enough for us to drive safely. She was very kind. If we are in LaCrosse, we will definitely stay there again.

    Kristen2020-02-09T00:00:00Z

Amy and her family are very warm, respectful and are comfortable to be around. They have a super friendly and trained dog, who is just a sweetheart! Overall, the location of the home was perfect for me, close to La Crosse, shopping, outdoor adventures and the highway. I would totally recommend this space to anyone! This is a newly remodeled, downstairs in-law suite of our home. The entrance is completely separate & private from the owners' space above. Late arrivals are easy :) We're tucked right next to Grandad's Bluff, are .5 mile from UW-La Crosse, and 1.5 miles to downtown/Riverside park! This is a safe, no outlet street with very little traffic or noise. We provide free wifi & Roku, private entrance, hiking & golf down the street, and short walks to food & entertainment! We live upstairs with pets.
Our driveway is shared with our neighbor. We ask that you please park on the street to ensure we don't block our neighbor's drive. There is a flight of stairs to get to the space. The entryway space is yours to use while you're here! The second queen bed is a collapsible unit that fits right in the living room. It's a fantastic, convenient setup that's very easy to use, but please be aware that it will not be as deluxe as the main bed. Though this is a studio space, the two beds are in separate areas to provide some privacy while sleeping. We own pets - they live upstairs with us, but never (currently or previously) enter the rental space. They like to tell us when the mailman is here, or if someone is walking near our driveway. Many weekends, they won't be present, but once in a while you may hear them a bit since we live upstairs. We apologize for that, and will try to give you a heads up if we know they'll be here congruent with your stay.
Very quite street as there is no outlet. At the end of our block is Forest Hills Golf Course and the base of Grandad's Bluff. There is loads of hiking and biking in those woods and we use the trails often. If you follow our street 1.5 miles in the opposite direction, you'll run straight into Downtown La Crosse and the Mississippi River!
  • The space is cozy and welcoming and the location couldn't have been better for us. We appreciated the private entrance and roominess despite it being considered a studio space. Also, Jillian was super responsive to all of our questions both before our stay and during.

    Becky2020-03-08T00:00:00Z
  • Our stay was outstanding! The fireplace and wine were perfect touches. We enjoyed the movies that were provided. The bathroom was awesome. The kitchen amenities made cooking possible without a kitchen. The two separate sleeping spaces made it possible to have multiple adults share the space, and still provided some privacy. Our adult son used the extra bed, and was quite comfortable. We would definitely stay here again.

The check in was very easy and we had our own separate entrance. The space was extremely clean and filled with everything we might need. Thanks for the wonderful stay Jillian!

Recently renovated half-duplex. Hickory woodwork throughout. A block from unique shopping and dining experiences. You're just a mile from the interstate (I-90), 2 miles from the La Crosse Regional Airport, and only about 2 miles from downtown La Crosse, Western Technical College, UW-La Crosse, Viterbo University, and Mayo and Gunderson Hospitals. The Mississippi and Black Rivers are just a few blocks away where eagles will soon be gathering. Access anytime with the electronic lock.
A very quiet place right on the local bus route. During winter months alternate side parking is enforced in La Crosse which is explained further in the house manual. There is no off-street parking available.
This house is on one corner of an intersection. On the other 3 corners are a church, a church school and the parsonage. During the day, the school blocks off their part of the street for the kids to play in. The streets the house is on are not considered main thoroughfares so they are not that busy. A block away are some unique shops including a sweet shop and a winery.
  • Great space for the two of us! Not far from where we wanted to be.

    Ashley2020-03-08T00:00:00Z
  • Our stay at Rob's house was perfect! Check-in was super easy and his communication was great. The house is cute and very comfortable and had everything we needed. We were traveling with our 7-month-old baby and got along really well. We would definitely stay here again!

    Natasha2020-03-01T00:00:00Z
  • Great find the place was clean comfortable and exceeded our expectations! We would certainly stay there again!

    Rick2020-02-23T00:00:00Z
  • Wow! I loved staying at Rob’s place. This was the best Airbnb that I have stayed in around the La Crosse area. The decor made it feel like I was in my own home. The instructions made check in and check out so simple. The kitchen was fully equipped with everything you would need to make a meal. I loved the quality of the towels and linens. Rob communicated quickly and thought of every detail to make our stay special.

This room is inspired by the Norwegian lifestyle, simplicity, and meditation. Located on the second-floor, the room is large with a dedicated spot for yoga practice and super comfortable bed, desk, and windows with view of bluffs. This room is perfect for one guest all the way up to 5 or 6, depending on ages.
Share kitchen, living room, dining room, bathrooms, and patio with other guests, family members, and friends.
We have an intimate view of Grandad Bluff, especially being that it is right outside our front door. We are in one of the best neighborhoods: safe, clean, and close to downtown.
  • I highly recommend Michelle's Airbnb and suggest that you stay there. Growing up in the La Crosse area I revered the neighborhood in which this house is located and viewed it as being at the center of everything unique and good about La Crosse. Feelings of being grounded by history, the presence of interconnectedness, and pride for the city washed over me the thousands of times I walked or drove through this neighborhood as a child and young adult. Those same feelings still wash back over me when I return for visits today, and you’ll see what I mean when you visit, too. The location provides a front-row seat to view the city's most iconic limestone bluffs, easy walks along tony tree-lined streets flanked by well-appointed early-century houses, a short (but comfortably-distant) jaunt to the excitement of UW-L, and an idyllic 5-minute drive down Main or Cass Streets to the historic downtown district located on the shores Mississippi River. All of this is there for your taking. To this day there isn't a more ideal or central location in La Crosse. The house is respite in and of itself. Norwegian design establishes continuity throughout, as do Michelle’s purpose-driven, thoughtful, and complementary design elements that you’ll have fun discovering during your stay. Each room exudes a paradoxical sense of vibrancy and solidity that relaxes in an unexpected way that is hard to find elsewhere, even in one's on home. The environs make me happy every time I stay there. And Michelle's professionalism has always shone through as it pertains to bookings, communications, availability for her guests, helpfulness, attentiveness, respect, and simply by running an admirably-tight ship. In my book this is the definition of being a super-host. Again, I highly recommend Michelle's Airbnb and suggest that you stay there.

  • This room in the guesthouse is very spacious and has just what you need to feel at ease, snuggle in, read a book, write, talk, sleep. They anticipated every guest’s needs, and the whole home is so carefully curated and beautiful.

    Kristen2020-02-29T00:00:00Z
  • We were traveling with our dog. It was nice to feel welcome and our dog was right at home. She got along great with Michelle's dog and they had a blast together. We were very comfortable during our stay.

    Corey2020-02-23T00:00:00Z
  • It's peaceful... If everyone takes shoes off at the door...and are not tromping up the wooden stairway in shoes... I love the heating system you are in control of... The very large room... Comfy bed. The 2 pillows on my bed were rock hard and flat, bring your own or you will regret that... My son felt the pull out sofa bed was pretty uncomfortable. I wished the coffee was already made... The coffee makers to use take quite a bit of time to set up and use and produce coffee from..... Would have loved hot coffee waiting... If nothing else. The house is beautiful the host friendly.... The room with the fireplace is her bedroom? Lovely stay non the less.

    Tiffany2020-02-14T00:00:00Z
  • This is my favorite Airbnb that I have ever stayed at! I highly recommend staying with Michelle!

    Alicia2020-02-09T00:00:00Z
  • One of the nicest places I’ve stayed in period. It isn’t fancy or luxury, but it is bright, homey, comfortable, and quality. From an amazing selection of loose leaf teas, to the view of the bluff, this is a great spot for the money.

    Connor2020-02-02T00:00:00Z

It’s a permanent boat house on the river. There’s a dog park right outside the door and a park to walk or exercise. Well light and safe. Just a short walk to downtown lacrosse or an Uber ride away. Situated between the worlds largest six pack and the main channel of the Mississippi it’s the perfect rustic get away. Sleepless in Seattle style right here in the Midwest. Has a full kitchen and a portable toilet inside with a water cooler for cooking and drinking. Kayak and mountain bike for guests.
There’s a kayak and bike available for use. Please put back inside so they don’t get stolen!! I’m very allergic to cats and most dogs, if you have either can we please talk about it before you bring them, thank you.
  • Such a fun place! pretty close to downtown and so close to a great view of the bridge!!

    Megan2020-03-15T00:00:00Z
  • This place is awesome. Great for a couples get away. Perfect mix of nature and industrial. Truly unique. Totally going back again this summer.

    Hannah2019-12-08T00:00:00Z
  • Unique spot and one of the quietest places I have stayed anywhere!

    Theodore2019-11-03T00:00:00Z
  • This place is just as Brian described. We call them fishing shanties in our area, though this one comes equipped with nice appliances and all the basics for an enjoyable stay. Brian was always on call it seemed, answering our questions immediately. If one tunes out the white noise from the brewery across the channel, one can thoroughly enjoy the private and peaceful location on the river. If you are used to camping you will have no problem with the lack of running water or chemical toilet. My main concern was the futon bed. I had never slept on a comfortable one and this one was no exception. I will not mark this rental down because of it however since Brian described it as a futon and I think that most guests that are up for renting this place will be young and good sleepers; not 70-somethings who don't sleep well in good conditions . Just thought I'd mention it since no one else did thus far, and it may be an issue for some. This place is a memory maker. Thanks Brian.

    Oriana2019-10-11T00:00:00Z
  • Good communication!

    Linda2019-09-08T00:00:00Z
  • So I was unfortunately unable to stay at the boat house. However I still wanted to write a review as Brian was so helpful from start to finish. I plan on going back just to stay in this houseboat finally!

    Katherine2019-08-20T00:00:00Z
  • It was a neat experience staying on a house boat. My friend absolutely loved the idea, and is coming back soon to stay again. Its neat and clean on the inside, be aware that there is no running water. But water is supplied by Brian. The houseboat has everything you need. My only small concern was that the walkway leading to the boat is falling apart. But it’s well lit in the dark, so there was no fear of falling in.

    Anita2019-08-11T00:00:00Z
  • It is rustic as advertised but if you know what you are doing it works great! River is fantastic in the morning and the bike path and dog park proximity works really well. Being dog friendly place is a big plus!

  • Lovely little apartment located near to local amenities such as Festival foods and various fast food outlets. The apartment was warm and clean and the owners cleared the steps and the sidewalk every day that it snowed (nearly every day which was cool!) Great for a single person or a couple.

  • Carma offers a nice, clean, house. With clean bedrooms and bathroom. Offering towels for bathe and snacks and water. Comfortable bed and pillows allow for a great nights sleep.

    Ronald2020-03-08T00:00:00Z

    Emily2020-02-14T00:00:00Z
  • Carma ranks at the top with 2 other hosts I have had, who are the epitome of what it means to be a gracious host--making guests feel welcomed and comforted and like they have space to be on their own as well as offer ways to connect and be involved with their household.

    Rita2020-02-01T00:00:00Z
  • Even though my time at Carma's home was short, it was honestly the best experience I've had. It was so comfortable and she was super flexible with arrival times, she also loves to know what's going on or where you're off to next, which I appreciated telling her about! I definitely recommend staying at Carma's house!

We are on The Mighty Mississippi River. Your backyard. You can sit on your porch, shade deck, sun deck or walk out on to the dock and enjoy your morning brew. In the evening you can sit out on the dock and view a beautiful sunset. Eagles are visitors to the area, as well as Great Blue Herons, river otters, muskrats, and varieties of ducks. This is truly a place for those who love to be on water. When the day is done come in to your home away from home.
There are two bedrooms with new beds and cozy new bedding. The master has a queen size bed and the second room has two twin beds. There is a pack n play for infants to 30 pounds. The living room has a large flat screened TV (with cable), a gas fireplace, DVD player, and a couch with a fold out queen size bed, so you can sleep up to 6. You have one full bath with a shower. There is a full kitchen with an eating area and also an island with two stools. The kitchen has everything you need, including a dishwasher. We just added an Echo for your use. I left some information about Echo in case you haven't used it yet. We also added a usb port which can charge up to six devices. To understand what makes this place unique, all you have to do is look out your living room window or walk out your door and turn left. The Mississippi River is your backyard. You have a private screened in porch and shade deck. There is also a sun deck, a dock, and a shady beach to enjoy.
When you drive onto the island you won't realize that behind all those homes is a respite from the real world. Once you settle in you have no reason to go off looking for beauty unless you want to. The island is interesting in that there are newer homes, and older homes and across the street there is a nursing home But, the Mississippi River is your backyard and every day it is different. You might see eagles catching fish or Great blue herons standing on the dock. We have had visits by two otters. There are great places to eat, lots of biking trails, several parks, several theatre experiences, Mount La Crosse ski hill, antique stores, and so much more. * We live less than two miles from the downtown area, .9 mile from Gundersen Clinic/ Hospital and across the street from Bethany Riverside Retirement Community.

This charming 1950s home gives you just what you need for a cozy weekend stay in the beautiful city of La Crosse! Relish in the privacy of the entire second floor and make yourself comfortable in your private lounge area and bedroom. The entire 2nd story, guest bedrooms and lounge, is private to the guest. The first floor is shared with the host including kitchen, bathroom and living room.
Enjoy the beautiful outdoor garden and fenced in back yard. Grill included. I have a rather discerning feline friend named Pascal. She is not allowed upstairs and will not intrude on your private space. There are three steps to get onto the main level and a flight of stairs to access your private bedroom and lounge. The shared bathroom is located on the first floor so you will need to travel the stairs to access the bathroom. I work very hard to make sure guests are comfortable in my home. Your private space will be clean and tidy upon arrival, however; I both work a demanding job in addition to going to school and live here full time. Occasionally, there may be a dirty dish in the sink or shoes left out on the mat, much like there would be in your own home. If this doesn't meet your needs, I respectfully recommend staying in a different location.
4 blocks from an elementary school and playground. 2 minute drive to Walmart, grocery stores and numerous other shops and restaurants. There are train tracks two blocks away from the house. Sometimes you will be able to hear train noises in the distance. Occasionally a particularly heavy train will send slight vibrations through the house.

Full upstairs available! Includes a bedroom, living room, kitchen, bathroom, and 1 garage space! I may rarely need to wash dishes in the kitchen but for the most part, I won't be up there. The fridge & freezer will have plenty of room for any food you may bring. The living room has a 55" TV, and a sleeper-couch. Bring a laptop, console, or roku for the TV, its not "smart". We can share my wi-fi. I live downstairs and will have access to my own bathroom, bedroom and living room down there.
My home is bi-level style, which means that you need to be able to climb a flight of stairs to get into my home!!!! I do not believe that my home is wheel-chair or handicap accessible. I do have a washer-and-dryer in my home, however, they are downstairs. Guests may use the washer/dryer only if I am present, because I will typically keep the downstairs locked. I will not allow people to go down stairs unless I am present. Guests have full access to the kitchen and are welcome to use utensils, make food, bring food, and store food in the large fridge/freezer. I own a separate fridge/freezer downstairs so I shouldn't be using your upstairs kitchen except to wash dishes. I will not pilfer your food.
My house is less than a quarter mile away from an awesome bike trail which can connect you to the Elroy-Sparta trail and even to Hixon Forest with minimal road-crossings if you're willing to put in the miles! This is an EXCELLENT home for a medium or long distance hiking or biking crew looking to explore upper and lower Hixon! 3 miles from UWL campus, 3.5 miles to the Valley View Mall. The street that my house is on sees minimum traffic and I live in a very nice and quiet neighborhood with friendly neighbors, yet it is also less than one mile away from the north-side bar strip.
  • Comfortable bed, quiet neighborhood, great garage, easy to get around.

Guests have the use of the whole upstairs but the kitchen is shared, as Matthew explains. Matthew always answered our questions immediately. He is a good host. The apartment is a nice set up and the neighborhood was very quiet during the night. It was just the kind of place we were looking for.

Carefully curated home, enjoy many original works of art, bluff views, large fenced in back yard, and basement rec room. • We were Airbnb "newbies" and not sure what to expect from an Airbnb experience. Our stay here was so easy and relaxing! Anna communicated with us very well leading up to our stay, so we had no problem getting there and checking in. Mitch happened to be there on our arrival and welcomed us at the door and showed us to our room. The whole house is so very homey and relaxing. Super cute! Our room was nice, the space was very clean, and our stay was very quiet, despite there apparently being another guest staying. Mitch was so nice to have coffee made in the morning, so I was able to have a cup before heading out for my run (and another after). Location was perfect for us, as it is only 1 mile from UWL campus, and we were there to visit our daughter. We would most definitely stay again. I very much preferred this experience to a hotel stay.

    Jen2020-02-01T00:00:00Z
  • Anna's home and our room were clean, comfortable and welcoming, even with our last minute booking. The little doggies were a sweet little bonus.

    Cheryl2020-01-26T00:00:00Z
  • This was my second time staying with Mitch and Anna and it was even better than the first time! Every time that I went in my room I felt so happy, safe, and warm. Their water pressure in the shower is Incredible too as a side note. :)

This apartment is up one flight of stairs. No pets on site.
Quiet, walkable neighborhood, very close to Mayo, Viterbo and downtown.
  • This Airbnb was a great find for our family of four (me, my husband, and our two sons) for the weekend. It was in a great neighborhood and was reasonably priced, the hosts added extra little touches to make our stay great, the apartment was very clean, and they provided all the necessary cookware items for us to be able to cook most of our meals in the apartment.

    Jamee2020-01-05T00:00:00Z
  • I booked the apartment for visiting family and it was perfect in every way. Our go-to place from now on for guest overflow!

  • Great location and price for our needs. Really cute and private place. Everything thing you need for a multi day stay.

  • Our stay at Nancy & Charle’s charming apartment was perfect for our Christmas week in La Crosse visiting “kids” and grandkids. Conveniently located and delightfully appointed with thoughtful extra touches, it was everything we could have wanted. Will definitely stay again when visiting in La Crosse!

  • Nancy and Chuck’s place was perfect for my quick stay in the city!

    Erin2019-11-13T00:00:00Z
  • Nancy and Charles were amazing. They were kind enough to leave a binder with all the information we needed along with some fun facts about the history of La Crosse. The space was cute and quaint, just what my husband and I love! We went to college in La Crosse and were back visiting and loved the area that their Airbnb was located. It was close to downtown, but also in a nice quiet neighborhood. They were sweet enough to leave us coffee, hot chocolate, and wine which we enjoyed. Along with books and games to pass some time. The space was clean, but had the historical rustic charm of an old house. Very beautiful space, there was a mishap with the hot water heater, but it didn’t even affect our stay at all. Would definitely recommend if you are looking for a cute, quaint, and quiet space to stay in a great area of La Crosse!

  • Ended up staying in the cabin next door run by her sister so I can't speak a lot for Angie and DJs particular cabin. HOWEVER, they looked very similar from what I can tell, and Abbie's was AMAZING!!!! It was sooo cute with so many thoughtful touchs - including fresh baked cookies waiting for us, adult and children coloring books in the drawer, and all of the soap was the seventh generation brand - environmentally conscientious place!! Local tips for all the local hiking. Location was amazing. I will definitely be back when it's warm, if they'll have me! :)

    Hannah2019-11-17T00:00:00Z
  • Angie’s place was very pleasant and cute. I will definitely keep the cabin on my favorites list for my travels to the Onalaska area next fall! The view of the lake is beautiful and bike trails right across the street is an added bonus!

  • What a cozy little cottage on Lake Onalaska! It was the perfect size for our family of 4, including 2 teens. The linens were top-notch! The place was super clean! Responses from Angie were welcoming. The amenities of having bikes, kayaks, charcoal grill, and board games were great even if the weather didn't cooperate! We would definitely stay here again when visiting the La Crosse area!

  • I had a lovely stay at Michelle's stylish house in La Crosse. My room was super cute and super clean! Her house is set up to have everything you might need as a guest, and her communication is very clear and helpful. If you have an interest, Michelle has much knoweldge to share about sustainability, growing food, and reducing plastic (which you can tell just from being in her house). I will definitely stay here next time I'm in the hip town of La Crosse!

    Leah2020-02-29T00:00:00Z

  • Great place, a few steps on the water. Wish I had found this before this year as we get sick of paying and staying in hotels for hockey! 5 min from Onalaska hockey rink 🙌🏻!

    Heidi2019-07-21T00:00:00Z
  • I love everything about this place, from the thoughtful little touches that made my stay pleasant to the peace and quiet of the general area. I especially enjoyed the mornings and evenings sitting in the screened-in porch enjoying the views of the water and listening to the birds sing. The restored prairie just across the road was also a wonderful place to walk around. It's a cozy place to relax next to the water while still being within a short drive of restaurants and whatever entertainment you might be in the mood for. I'll be going back.

  • Cozy, comfortable and amazingly clean! Great location for hiking (loved Brady's Bluff), biking and enjoying the fireworks at Riverfest. Abbie quickly responded to questions and recommended great restaurants (Red Pines and Nutbush). The A.C. Carter House is a unique and charming testament to the entrepreneurial spirit of the once wild river city of La Crosse. The personal residence of Civil War veteran, merchant, and patent medicine man Amos Claude Carter and family; it is a delightful study in the detail of whimsy that once was a part of everyday design in Victorian America. For the full history, architectural details and additional photos you may wish to send an inquiry for the historic web site.
A truly unique and authentic Victorian gingerbread house! The ornate structure was restored and nominated to the National Registry of Historic Places in 1986 and photographed for the book Daughters of the Painted Ladies- America's Resplendent Victorians (one of only two homes in La Crosse chosen for that honor). It is listed on the La Crosse historical walking tour. Decorated in delightful Victorian imported wall coverings and friezes chosen to closely match the original designs and colors discovered during the restoration. The interior is furnished with a eclectic fun mix of comfortable and antique furnishings from Empire, to Victorian, to Art Deco, to Atomic Age and featuring rare massive antique 1 st Empire and Victorian bedroom suites by Anthony Quervelle of Philadelphia and Charles Lee of New Orleans. A House Adorned-The History The A.C. Carter House, Circa 1888 is significant for it’s historic connection with the economic and social development of North La Crosse, Wisconsin. It serves history as a prime example of entrepreneurial spirit , alive in La Crosse, an important Mississippi River port of the 19th century. This home is a rare, and excellent example of fine craftsmanship and detail, in the late Gothic Revival style of the Queen Anne Victorian Period of American architecture. Highly ornate, it was one of the most adorned suburban residences of the new North side subdivision at it’s time of construction. It directly reflects still, the tastes and character of it’s original occupant, and builder, Amos Claude Carter. Carter, a Civil War veteran, shot in Richmond, imprisoned in the horrific “Bull Pen” POW camp and present at Gen. Lee's surrender at Appomattox during his service, came to La Crosse in the 1880’s, and worked as a craftsman in many different area’s of construction with only one useful arm. Being of strong spirit, having been marched in “double quick” for nine days while shot through this arm and without rations for three days, he became a leader of men. Amos Carter soon became a builder and independent contractor. An entrepreneur, Amos Carter began yet another business, that of a wholesale grocer and dry goods merchant, and was among those to first build a North side business district in the 1300 block of Caledonia Street. A.C. Carter & Son, provided a good income as well as an outlet for his new venture, Fell’s Patent Medicine. Being very successful in his endeavors, he built himself the home of his dreams, and cherished it till his dying day. After his death, the home eventually passed to his youngest surviving daughter Bessie, whom occupied the home until her death in Feb, 1985. Just two months short of her 101st birthday. The home still stands today, relatively unchanged, as the legacy of the free enterprise, and spirit, that was A.C. Carter. A.C. Carters granddaughter Avis Riley, who grew up in the home, still resided in the smaller home north, until her death in 2007. We forever thank her for her invaluable contributions, and use of photographs in researching it’s history. Additional Carter Family Data Amos Claude Carter, Civil War Veteran, married Lurene Henry, *great granddaughter and direct descendent of Revolutionary War patriot Patrick Henry (“Give me liberty or give me death”) in New York, Aug. 15th 1865 the date was also recorded as Sept. 15th 1865, perhaps a 2nd wedding ceremony. This kinship being subject of an article in a Minnesota newspaper from the 1890's, shown to us by Avis Riley, about the Henry family wedding spoons presented to Amos and Lurene (aka Lorena) by a Patrick Henry descendants society. We do not know the true exact genealogical connection. They bore four children, one, a daughter Mae Bell, died in infancy. Son Claude, and daughters Maude and Bessie survived. First settled in Sparta, Wisconsin before moving to La Crosse. They lived above their dry goods store during much of the four year construction of the A.C. Carter House. The home was purchased in 1985, first restored, and is still currently owned by Dean and Signe Gronbeck-Johnson, owners of Grandeur Restorations of Madison, and it was accepted for Nomination for the National Register of Historic Places in 1986. The A.C. Carter House is featured on page 77 of the book “Daughters Of The Painted Ladies, America’s Resplendent Victorians” Elizabeth Pomada and Michael Larson authors, Douglas Keister photographer. It is widely considered the 'bible' of Victorian restorationists. One of only two La Crosse homes selected on Ms. Pomada's nationwide tour, the photographer was sent back from San Francisco to capture 2 photos during restoration to be on time for publication. Ms. Pomada described the home as one of the most delightful surprises of her tour. We are truly honored by her recognition of this wonderful home that time seemed to have forgotten.

  • ***PERFECT IN EVERY WAY***. Beautiful touches throughout. I am OBSESSED with this location and host. Easily my favorite Airbnb experience to date. Not only is this *home* beautiful, original and special in so many ways, it is run by the most detail-oriented and thoughtful *host* you can imagine. This woman thinks of everything. All instructions were super clear and smooth. Signe has so much knowledge (and illustrated history) about the house that she clearly has a passion for carrying forward and sharing with her guests. I about lost it (in a good way) when my group walked into perfectly dimmed pre-set lighting throughout the home - complete with a Christmas tree. And so much holiday greenery on the exterior! WELCOME JAZZ MUSIC was also playing ready for our arrival. After a 4-hour drive to get there, it couldn't have been more special. This woman really does think of everything. Prior to our arrival, she even put out an attractive vessel of street salt for us on the front porch because it was snowing. Even the salt bucket vessel was cute, complete with a little metal hand scoop. We also particularly enjoyed various cocktails in the house crystal punch bowl (champagne + rum) and Crock pot (spiked ciders). Also, the city of La Crosse itself proved to be A GREAT PLACE TO VISIT; lots to do! WE ABSOLUTELY LOVE THE A.C. CARTER HOUSE. Thank you Signe!

    Marcia2020-01-01T00:00:00Z
  • The historic Carter house is a truly amazing place. I can't recommend it enough if your travels take you to La Crosse. Signe is a very thoughtful and responsive hostess.

  • I highly recommend staying here! The house is unique and inviting. Signe is a fantastic host!

  • We loved staying at this beautiful home. Signe was so helpful in every way. She was wonderful with communication. She thought of everything we would need. We told we really wanted to be there in time to watch the Packer game, and when we arrived it was on and ready for us!!!! We are looking forward to staying again in the future in this beautiful clean historic home!!!!!!

  • A wonderful stay, again.

    Lisbeth2020-01-25T00:00:00Z
  • The place was lovely and was just what we needed. What made it extra special, however, was how nice Michelle was to us! She responded quickly and she greeted us nicely. She even made us coffee the next morning when we weren't feeling very well after new years eve. We had a lovely conversation about environmental issues and exchanged hugs before we left. Big ups Michelle! P.S. She also has the sweetest dog, Charlie, who loved a cuddle!

    Jonathan2020-01-01T00:00:00Z
  • My stay at Michelle's place was fantastic . She was very friendly and a great host. Went out of her way to ensure that everyone was having a good stay at her place.

Charming and cozy - One of the first homes in this part of La Crosse- the original 1925 pine floors have been restored & the use of wood throughout give the space a warm cottage feel. Many modern touches including wifi, smart tvs in both bedrooms with local channels and plex (curated selection of tv shows and movies), bluetooth speaker in living area to link up with your mobile device, i-pad charging station next to bed and lots of places to charge electronics. One main floor bedroom with queen size bed with Company Store linen and pillowtop mattress Second bedroom is upstairs - you'll feel like you're in a treehouse. (one with 5' 10" ceilings) Three single platform beds- all with My Pillow mattress toppers. Books and games provided. The stairs to the loft are typical of a 1920s house, meaning narrower treads than are now the norm. People had smaller feet back then. Please use caution on the stairs and always hold the railing. The Ashley couch in the main living area can be turned into a queen bed for two guests. When weather allows the three-season sunroom makes a great summer sleeping room- the couch can sleep 2 guests. This space also is a great place to relax at the end of the day and avoid the mosquitos. Fully equipped kitchen! Refrigerator, stove, oven, microwave, dishwasher, blender, toaster, and bakeware. Coffee maker is a high-end Saeco automatic espresso machine, provisioned with our favorite locally roasted coffee beans. With the press of a button, you will enjoy a flavorful cup of coffee. Tea drinkers can try different varieties of green, black and herbal teas from our local tea shop. Sugar, creamer, and spices are also provided for your use. Main floor laundry room includes compact size washer & dryer, with detergent provided, as well as an ironing board & iron.
Located in a quiet neighborhood at the base of hedgehog bluff.
  • This is great place to stay for all ages, weather you are just looking for a place to lay your head, or a place you want to stay and hang out. Heidi provides things to do for all ages and interests. I highly recommend considering staying here!

    Casey2020-03-08T00:00:00Z
  • Cozy, comfortable, classy!

    Laurel2020-03-01T00:00:00Z
  • Perfect little cottage!! Great amenities, very clean, cute decor and a fun loft! The hosts are easy to get a hold of.

    Jenny2020-02-02T00:00:00Z
  • This is an adorable cottage with great little touches. It was the perfect place for our ladies getaway weekend. I would definitely go back. Heidi was a great hostess and fast to respond back. I highly recommend this quint cottage that has a great location.

    Maureen2019-12-15T00:00:00Z
  • This place was incredible. Sparkling clean and well appointed, full of interesting artifacts from La Crosse and the surrounding area. The fireplace keeps things cozy. We had such a wonderful Thanksgiving holiday.

    Andrew2019-11-29T00:00:00Z
  • Very clean. Great location.

    Wasim2019-11-16T00:00:00Z
  • This is a lovely cottage with many nice touches. It is a perfect little getaway for a weekend with family. We had our 8 month old baby with us, and Heidi set up a high chair and pack n play for us. There are other kid-friendly features - from the "tree-house" like upstairs, to loads of games and books for children of a range of ages. The adults in our group enjoyed comfortable beds, cozy fireplace, and an amazing coffee-maker. Honestly, we all got a bit too caffeinated! The cottage was great for our family, but I could see it also being nice for couples or a girls' weekend.

    Marianne2019-10-27T00:00:00Z
  • We loved our stay at this darling cottage. There were so many nice touches like fresh flowers on the table, motion activated lights in the entry and kitchen, and the expresso coffee machine all set up and ready for us in the morning. The fireplace was used mornings and evenings and the deck was perfect to enjoy on a warm afternoon when we arrived back after a day of exploring. Although we did not use the upstairs , it would be perfect for kids to have their own space. We will recommend Stones Throw Cottage to others and rent it again if we ever get back to LaCrosse. No cleaning fee was a bonus and made this cottage SO affordable.

  • The place was just as described, and it was easy to communicate with Abbie. Would highly recommend for a quiet lakeside getaway. Amazing hospitality.

    Chris2020-02-16T00:00:00Z
  • This place is absolutely perfect for a little weekend getaway. The view is beautiful, even when frozen over, and the inside is great for grilled cheese and movies. The studio was clean and plenty warm, and the distance from downtown Onalaska and La Crosse was more than reasonable. The host was amazing. She kept in quick communication and lent us extra courtesies when the weather was uncooperative. This is a great place to stay!

    Sophie2020-02-09T00:00:00Z
  • I needed a last minute place to stay especially after a long day of work and having to drive through a small snowstorm! Abbie confirmed my reservation right away and it was such a relief knowing I had somewhere to lay my head that night! Thanks for making all of this super easy and accommodating!

    Brae2020-01-25T00:00:00Z

    Anne2020-01-24T00:00:00Z

    Peter2020-01-19T00:00:00Z
  • Another great stay in the books! I brought my teenagers up to ice fish and the lake did NOT disappoint! Abbie’s studio apartment was the perfect place for us to crash! Super cute little space - with everything we needed for the weekend! The bed was SUPER comfy and the view from the front screened in porch was amazing. We will be back!!

    Michelle2020-01-05T00:00:00Z
  • Abbie’s place is so cozy and it has everything two people could need. Nice touches to make the place feel very comfortable. Comfy couches, comfy bed, well stocked full kitchen and beautiful view. We loved this place. It is a short drive to La Cross (about 10-15 minutes) and in a nice and quiet neighborhood on the lake. We would definitely stay again. Abbie is a great communicator, so it was easy to find and figure out.
