Places to stay in Kilchrenan
We look forward to warmly welcoming you to The Byre, a lovely renovated and historic farm cottage nestled in the countryside near the west coast town of Oban. Immerse yourself in the experience of living like a local on this traditional highland farm, run by a Scottish family from one of the ancient highland clans. You have the entire use of the cosy cottage with its exposed roof timbers and original stone walls. Relax, unwind and soak up the beauty in this special, peaceful cottage.
A living space with a fully kitted out kitchen and dining table; a bathroom with shower cubicle, toilet and sink; and two twin bedrooms are all yours to enjoy. Breakfast cereal, jam, marmalade, milk, tea, coffee and fresh farm eggs are provided for you to make your own breakfast. The cottage was once the old byre (barn) for the farm. Now fully renovated, underfloor heating and double glazing ensures you'll have a cosy stay any time of the year.
The cottage is only a short distance from the village of Taynuilt. The village has a pub, restaurant, post office, grocers, butcher, craft shop, hair dresser and tea room. There are lots of nice walks in the area, including directly from the cottage. You can go for a stroll along the edge of a sea loch, a wander through a forest or climb a mountain. There are several open gardens in the area worth a visit, as well as castles, the Cruachan hydro electric visitors centre and the Inverawe Smokery.
  • What an amazing place for a countryside getaway! The Byre is everything you’d hope for and a little bit more. Set in a beautiful location, the cottage is spacious, spotlessly clean and full of welcoming touches such as books, biscuits and board games. Perfect for a holiday with our toddler who loved meeting the animals! We wouldn’t hesitate to return and hope to do so soon.

  • The Byre is a cozy cottage full of all the mod cons needed to make your stay very comfortable. Spotlessly clean and tastefully decorated, Niall has turned this once black house into a perfect holiday accomodation. The views of Ben Cruachan are tremendous as is the situation on the whole. Niall's father introduced us to the sheep, goats, hens and various ducks on the farm, which was a lovely experience. The Byre is a perfect spot if you enjoy 'The good life'. Highly recommended.

  • We had an amazing time at Niall's place. From the moment we arrived to feeding the sheep the next morning. We loved the stories about the house, the farm and the sheep. A beautiful place to stay, with beautiful people. We will be back!

  • This is one of the best places we have had the pleasure of staying in. The location is ideal for exploring the area and both Niall and his father have some wonderful tips for things to do. Upon arrival, the house was perfectly clean and very cosy and comfortably set up. There were lots of lovely homely touches - which we very much appreciated. The hospitality was superb, we loved learning about the history of the building and being able to experience part of the farm, by feeding the animals, just topped off an already brilliant time. We would whole heartedly recommend Niall's place to anyone, and we are very keen to return.

  • This is a lovely cottage. With lots of little touches that we wasn’t expecting. With great hosts. Would recommend this cottage as it’s located near lots of destinations to visit and the scenery is beautiful. If you decide to stay here. You must go and visit the farm animals and help feed them. As it’s a lovely experience. Specially if you have children. Also the farms sheep dog is very friendly and likes to fetch the stick.

  • Very beautiful place, clean and silent. Niall gave us good tips and it was a pleasure to stay at his farm.

  • This is the spot to stay. cozy, friendly down to earth people serving up a scottish experience. Not too far from town and great walks and views.

    Steven2019-12-11T00:00:00Z
  • Niall's accomodation is clean and very well furnished. In the morning we could feed sheep and have received much information about the region. Especially for children certainly an experience

  • The setting is ideal for a homecoming, in the countryside and at the same time close to many sites very interesting to see or review. Isobel was charming and her homemade fresh bread was a delight! Also, the cruising at the local pub was friendly and convenient to exchange.

We look forward to warmly welcoming you to The Farmhouse, a traditional Scottish farmhouse that has nestled in the beautiful countryside near the west coast town of Oban for hundreds of years. • Perhaps the nicest AirBnb we’ve stayed at! The location is lovely, nestled in the hills with nice views over the farmlands to the mountains. The accommodation itself is wonderful; Niall has managed to maintain the traditional rustic feel of the farm yet with all the modern comforts to make it a very cosy and comfy place to stay. Niall’s parents met us and made us feel very welcome, as well as providing some very entertaining conversation and stories! To top it all off we got the chance to meet and feed the sheep, goats, chickens and ducks - who were all very friendly and gentle. If life permits then we’ll certainly be back one day!

  • My parents and I had such a wonderful time here on our long weekend away celebrating a belated birthday. We were very grateful for the Rayburn oil cooker and boiler which kept the house super warm and cosy, alongside the large wood-burner which is a centrepiece in the living room and dining area. The exposed brickwork gave the place a real feeling of authenticity and history and Niall also provided us with fresh duck eggs alongside all the basics that you might need after a long journey. Would highly recommend to anyone who might be considering exploring the local surroundings!

  • Niall's place was one of the highlights of our 2 weeks in Scotland. Exceptional hospitality, beautiful scenery and amazung accommidations

    Betty2019-10-17T00:00:00Z
  • Truly wonderful stay. Appreciated Niall's hospitality to show us around the house, explained her rich history and even taught us how to lit the fireplace. We woke up next morning refreshed and greeted with rolling green pastures dotted with grazing sheep. The children helped out Grandpa Jim in the farm feeding sheep, chicken and ducks - priceless experience indeed.

    Alan2019-10-14T00:00:00Z
  • Fantastic place. Wish our plans would have let us stay more than one nite.

    Paul2019-10-04T00:00:00Z
  • Niall’s home is wonderful! So comfortable and clean, with really thoughtful touches throughout. Out of the 8 different Air BnB’s I’ve stayed in throughout Scotland, this was the best. Interacting with the animals on the farm was definitely a high point. Niall was very responsive and helpful and an excellent host overall. Would love to come back again someday!

  • Willie's Cottage is a very pleasant and comfortable place to stay if you want nature, peace and quiet without giving up the comfort of a real home. And it does feel like a home: It's very tasteful, spacious and welcoming, and you will find a well-equipped kitchen and all modern appliances you need for a holiday (especially with kids). A high chair and travel cot were already prepared for our little one when we arrived. We spent our two weeks exploring the area on foot (down to Loch Awe and through forests), driving to sights around Oban and Loch Awe, and relaxing at Willie's Cottage, and enjoyed all of it! There's also a nice pub with good food a few miles away in Kilchrenan. For a family used to living in a busy city center, it felt quite remote, but in the best and most relaxing way possible! Jonathan was most welcoming and helpful and always fast to respond.

    Wolfgang2019-10-16T00:00:00Z
  • This property was very clean and spacious. The massive sunroom was an excellent place to enjoy some relaxing time.

    Sean2019-09-23T00:00:00Z
  • Willie's cottage is a real gem in a beautiful area. The place is spacious, located on a single track road near a beautiful loch. It has everything you need to feel comfortable and to enjoy oneself on rainy days; a bath tub, fireplace, cable TV and decent Internet access. The conservatory gets comfortably warm when the sun is out and there's a barbecue. Day trips to Oban and the surrounding islands, or to Glencoe, are within an hour's drive; we ended up only going to Oban for groceries and the chocolate company, but we plan on exploring more of the area next time. Contact with Jonathan was very pleasant, he always responded within a couple of hours and was very flexible and accommodating. We definitely recommend this place when you're looking for a secluded and quiet area outside of big (or even small) city life and to be present in nature.

    Jeroen2019-09-04T00:00:00Z
  • This is a lovely spacious and stylish home that is situated in a lovely quiet location with great views of Ben Cruachan. The pub at the end of the road is also excellent.

    Jason2019-08-17T00:00:00Z
  • The house is even more beautiful than you can see on the pictures. It is really beautiful with a large garden all around with a view of the surrounding hills. All kinds of birds fly around in the garden and occasionally the sheep or cows pass by. There is an overwhelming peace. We had nice weather and have been able to sit in the garden several times. The road to the house is narrow, but easy to do and it is beautiful! We saw buzzards and roe deer several times on the way home. The house is amazing! It is spacious with a conservatory and a living room with adjoining kitchen. The kitchen is well equipped for making elaborate meals. There are 3 spacious bedrooms with comfortable beds. We enjoyed various walks in the beautiful surroundings! We can recommend this house to everyone! We ate delicious food in the restaurant in Kilchrenan!

  • We ended our Scottish stay at Jonathan .... what happiness !!!! The house is cozy, very well furnished and impeccable !. All conditions are there to enjoy every moment: veranda for morning coffee, bbq for the garden, fireplace for cold days, walking guide for sunny days ..... with deer in the garden next door ! Ideal to discover the region: Oban, Glencoe, Crinan, Kilmartin .. Its location is a guarantee to disconnect urban speed, and taste the serenity of nature. We will keep this holiday in our hearts, that's for sure! Thank you Jonathan for your responsiveness and the welcome basket: D

The original building was built in the 1700's looking quite different from what it does now, but it was an Inn then, so has now gone back to it's original purpose. Cladich is in a rural position, but with great access to the countryside including lovely Loch Awe. Every outdoor pursuit is catered for, from fishing, kayaking, walking, cycling, skiing, climbing, sailing, hunting and much more all within an hours drive. There is history in abundance to discover, or just take time to stroll & relax.
We are based next to the Cladich River, so there is always the sound of water in the back ground. Most days there are Highland Cooo's in the field opposite the house as we are in a rural location, but there always seems to be people around to talk to. Loch Awe Boat Yard is 2 miles down the road, along with Arbrecknish where a drink and a meal can be had in the evenings.
  • Our second stay with Sarah and it was again wonderful - luxurious and friendly, with a delicious breakfast!

Mill Cottage dates from around 1880 and was originally home to the miller of the adjacent (non working) sawmill. Later on it was the telegram office for the area. Nowadays it is a traditional holiday cottage, quirky and full of character. The location and outlook are wonderful with breathtaking views of Loch Awe and lawns that give way to natural wild gardens and woodland. Listen to the burbling stream and enjoy the 3 acre field in front.
This 150 year old farm cottage has a lot of history, many traditional features, antique furniture, and tongue and groove panelling from the sawmill opposite There is a Morso wood burning stove and the original, slightly uneven, flag stones in the hallway. We also have brilliant fast BT unlimited wifi broadband Our guests have access to the entire house and the surrounding countryside and loch side. The neighbourhood is very quiet, secluded and peaceful. You can hear the owl hoot and sea eagle or osprey call, you will see the stars at night, red deer in the field at breakfast, brambles and sloes grow in the garden and there are roses in the summer and wild flowers in the fields. You will experience the calming and relaxing clean country air Glasgow airport is just over an hours drive. There is ample parking at the cottage. It has a private garden and field around the cottage. A stream runs past down to the loch (lake). Guests are free to fish from the shore in front of the cottage, with permission slip from the owner, and to walk in the hills, observing the usual country codes (shut gates that are shut, do not walk through cattle and sheep but around them etc) The neighbourhood is one of utmost tranquility and peace. You can spend the entire week reading with no distraction apart from the birdsong if you wish, or you can spend each day exploring a different tourist attraction in the surrounding area. There are buses that go past the cottage 6 times a day. You can put your hand out and stop them. They go directly to Oban, Inveraray, Loch Lomond, and Glasgow and stop at Dalmally train station (4 miles) and conned with ferries to the islands of Mull Coll Tiree Uist etc. The cottage is OLD, it is quirky, there are the expected dings that come with age, like uneven flagstones in the hall and a relatively steep staircase. There is a private water supply which after heavy rain can be peaty colour. If this occurs we supply 5L flagons of water for cooking and drinking. My husband and I were both brought up on the lochside. It is a rural part of the Highlands, in the middle of an area of outstanding natural beauty. You can spend each day by the loch swimming, fishing and having picnics or you can visit the astonishing amount of tourist attractions in the immediate area. The cottage is surrounded by a working farm. Fishing below the cottage from the shore is included in the rent. Fishing elsewhere on the loch is by permit available locally
The neighbourhood is peaceful West Highland rural life. There are deer in the field in the morning, eagles and ospreys overhead, foraging in the woods behind and picnics and fishing and swimming adventures to be had on the sandy shore in front of the cottage. Dams to be built in the stream alongside and walks abound for all abilities. There is unlimited BT wifi internet so you can sit and have tea in the garden and book your tickets to Mull and Iona the next day (for instance). Inveraray and its fantastic restaurants and shops are 10 minutes away if you don't fancy cooking, or want a take away.
  • We had a lovely mid week break at the cottage. It is in a perfect location for exploring this part of Scotland. We enjoyed a local walk around the cottage and snowy mountain walks on Ben Cruachan and in Glen Coe. Great that we could bring the dog and brilliant HOT bath and a log fire for the end of the day! Would definitely recommend!

  • The term 'hidden gem' is often overused, but this place ticks all the boxes if you're looking for a traditional Highland get away in a spectacular setting. Thank-you Emma.

  • We loved Emma’s cottage! A cosy and quiet place. We had a great time and made a lot of long walks with our dog. I would definitely recommend this place!

  • We can't recommend this cottage enough. It is set in the most stunning location and despite being treated to some typically Scottish summer weather the rain didn't dampen the experience at all. We spent some time exploring the surrounding hills with our little dog, took a boat out on the loch and enjoyed checking out the local villages. The perfect break from the pressures of daily life!

    Alison2019-08-21T00:00:00Z
  • A lovely cottage situated off the beaten track with a lovely view of the loch. Cottage was nice and tidy and well presented.

Lovely secluded 5 bed country house set in 26 acres with direct access onto Loch Awe. It is situated on the edge of the village of Kilchrenan and only 7 miles from Taynuilt. It is possible to walk to the pub, partly through the woods if you wish, within 15 minutes. The house is surrounded by its own land so is very private without being isolated. in addition to the beautiful woodlands, meadows, orchard and stunning views you should see red squirrels most days outside the kitchen window.
The house is large enough for 10 people so would suit two families wanting space for children to run around and areas for them to have privacy too.
The house is located in a beautiful part of the west coast of Scotland, a few minutes from the village pub (which serves excellent food) and only 7 miles from Taynuilt where you will find a train station, cafe, gift shop, butchers, village shop and post office. There are also three hotels near by which all serve excellent food if you fancy eating out. Oban is 22 miles away which is the renowned seafood capital of Scotland and known as the gateway to the islands. You will find major supermarkets and a good selection of restaurants here.
  • We just had a great time in the struan house! It was definitely a highlight of our trip. The house and the area around ( the Loch !) is beautiful. And Tina is a really nice host and she had everything well prepared for us. Thanks!

  • Beautiful home with a nice view of the Loch. Perfect house with huge bedrooms and a lot of rooms for a big family. Tina communicated very well with us all throughout our stay and prior to our arrival. Would definitely recommend!

    Melanie2019-08-25T00:00:00Z
  • Our stay at Tina's house in Kilchrenan was simply fantastic. The house was outstanding and surpassed our expectations - it is even more spacious, ornate and well kept than the photos suggest. The location was perfect for what we wanted - a beautiful view, on its own private land with the stunning Loch Awe at the foot of the garden, ideal for taking a nice swim in the sun or relaxing by the water. Tina was attentive to anything we needed in both the build up to our arrival and once we arrived at the house. A great host all in all and the house definitely ranks as the best Air BnB I've had the pleasure of staying in.

The house is beautifully designed and is full of surprises like the sauna which accesses into the birch woodlands. It sleeps eight and our goal has been to make it as family-friendly, comfortable and unique as possible. Sithean is secluded and peaceful, yet is only 2 miles away from Taynuilt, a lovely well-serviced village on the shores of Loch Etive. The West Coast town of Oban, known as 'the Gateway to the Isles', is 8 miles away; from there you can take a ferry to many of the inner and outer Hebridean islands. The location is ideal for walking and cycling for the whole family, and there is an amazing range of wildlife; hen harriers breed in the rough grassland below the house, deer wander down off the heather hill and red squirrels breed in the surrounding oak and birch woodlands. Within walking distance is Angus' Garden, one of the 'Glorious Gardens of Argyll & Bute', which is a beautiful 'wild' garden built around Loch Angus, and like the rest of this glen is a magical unspoilt place. Sithean is self contained and peaceful. It has been designed to sleep six to eight people, and can accommodate two families. This lovely new house has South and West facing dining areas (inside and outside) inluding a new elevated decking area on top of the knoll, and commands spectacular views of Loch Etive and the 'Shepherds of Glencoe' to the North, Ben Cruachan to the East, Morvern to the West and Barguillean Hill to the South. On the entry level there is a porch which is ideally suited for drying wet boots and clothes. This leads on the one side to a shower-room and a double bedroom with a mezzanine and twin beds, and on the other side to the kitchen. The kitchen, dining and living areas are open plan with a vaulted ceiling, and are attractively divided by a split level floor and earth brick walls. The living area has a radio/stereo with ipod, ipod docking station, and a TV and DVD player. Wi-fi is available. There is a wood burning stove in the living area, and under-floor heating throughout the house. Downstairs there is a double bedroom, a twin bedroom and a bathroom with a sauna which has direct access onto a decking area. The design allows an intimate connection with the birch woods from the lower level. The house contains everything you should need for your holiday, including full kitchen facilities (and eggs when available). Sithean meets Category 2 (wheelchair access with assistance) of the VisitScotland Accessibility Scheme for the whole of the entry level. Size: 87 m2. Amenities: TV, Balcony, cooking hob, oven, microwave, toaster, fridge, freezer, internet connection, kettle, Stereo, garden, Fireplace, Sauna, Private parking, Pets are welcome, Lake View, Heating, Wheelchair access possible; Bathroom: toilet, shower; Bedroom: 2 x double bed; Bedroom: 4 x single bed; Bedroom: 2 x double bed; Kitchen
  • We had fantastic time, despite weather challenges. The house perfect for two families. It benefits from plenty of space to relax, admire the view but also socialize. Children can find many interesting board games, toys and books. I would highly recommend it

Ballimore Farm is a fantastic place! Away from traffic giving you the feeling of being remote, even ‘cut off from civilisation - but it really isn’t! The nearest pub is only three miles down the road in Kilchrenan. Taynuilt with its grocery shop, butcher, post office, hairdresser, train station and cafe is only 7miles away. Lots more shops, restaurants, bars, cafes and of course the ferries the the isles are 30minutes drive away in Oban.
  • As a group of three families with young children gathering for a week together, Johanna's place exceeded our expectations in every way. The house was larger than the pictures show, each of the bedrooms and common rooms had more space than we could use. The house was superbly stocked with everything we could ever need (from baby items to chef kitchen needs) and the pool is a full-length lap pool (perfect for a quick exercise before the kids got up). The location also was far more magical than we anticipated. Set down a long driveway, amongst the hills, every window you looked out had a great view and it was remote enough to let the children fling open the doors and play outside to their heart's content (throw in an orphan lamb, a couple of farm dogs and Johanna's sweet 5-year-old son and it was pretty much the perfect recipe for a week of fun for our children). Johanna and her family, as well as a separate rental, all share the driveway, lawns and garden, but the way each house is positioned, it still felt private. The region is amazing, which is probably why you are looking at Johanna's place and all the best attractions were easy to get to. We spent a glorious day on a beach, went mountain biking on Glencoe Mountain Ski resort, visited Oban and surrounding towns, hiked in the Glencoe Valley and went wild swimming in the Coe River. And still spent a couple of days lounging at Johanna's house and tramping around on the farm. All in all, we would highly recommend her place for a family gathering or a group of friends and we hope to be back!

  • We were 11 travelers and had a great time !!! Greeted with a good whiskey, they told us the story of this house, recommended courses and visits. The house is very well equipped, each person has its comfort, not to mention the Olympic pool !!! Dogs, sheep, Hairy cows, mingle with the beautiful Scottish landscape! We highly recommend!

  • My family and I had a blast staying at Johanna's farm house. We loved being surrounded by nature, highland cows, sheep and the 2 cutest doggies you could possibly meet! It was nice being out of a city where you could enjoy peace and quiet, yet are a 20 min drive to oban and other bigger cities. Thank you again for letting us stay at your place.

  • We could not have loved our stay at Ballimore Farm more. The location, albeit remote, is stunning with rolling hills and mountains all around. Our children loved interacting with the farm animals (highland cows, sheep and sheep dogs) and playing with the owner’s sweet children. The house was clean, well-appointed and very comfortable. Every room has an en suite which makes it ideal for large family groups or couples traveling together. The kitchen table is large and inviting. The warm indoor pool is such a refuge on a cold day. For our group of 9 (5 adults and 4 young kids), this was a perfect place to spend a few days. We wish we had had more time to spend just at the farm!

  • This is a fabulous farm estate in an idyllic, pastoral setting. Spacious comfortable rooms, indoor pool, fun hikes on the property and family friendly activities. Great peaceful retreat on its own, or staging place for trips to other Scotland attractions (e.g., Oban and surrounds).

Quirky and stylish country cottage in stunning loch side location with views of Ben Cruachan.
Due to the proximity of both road and water, amongst other things, the property is not recommended for young children.
The cottage is situated on the shores of Loch Awe around 10 minutes drive from Inveraray with its castle, old jail and abundant amenities, just a few minutes from the photogenic ruins of Kilchurn Castle and the beautiful St Conan's Kirk. An ideal base for exploring the south western highlands and only forty minutes drive fron Oban and the islands in one direction and Glencoe in the other.
