***** I highly recommend***** TURO Car ,SUV and 4x4 rentals
Aloha Nature Lovers! Located between Waipio Valley and Volcano National Park. Great hiking! Convenient and very private swimming holes to enjoy at your door. One can spend days chasing the many private waterfalls and exploring our property. Swimming the pristine waters that fill natural pool below our many private waterfalls. Enjoy each breath of pure sweet air. The little cabin has a great ocean view to watch the ships go sailing by & clouds parade down the coast. Nights are wonderful just sitting around the campfire, star gazing and telling stories. Tent camping for the kids is safe and easy. Located 20 miles north of Hilo. Just 1 mile from the highway. Very serene with only the sounds of the flowing waterfall, breezes through the trees, and tropical birds. My three horses (Nohea , Mahina and Shy Girl) will be eagerly awaiting to greet you. Aloha and Happy Trails! ***** I highly recommend ***** TURO CAR ,SUV and 4x4 rentals NOTE : Flooding may and does occur in North Hilo and on the Big Island. Please use extreme caution when near, swimming in or crossing any waterway. 4x4 or jeep is recommended for exploring back road areas on the island and to get to my place. 4x4 is required to access Waipio Valley, Green Sands Beach, and Mauna Kea. Book a cheap car then ask for a jeep up-grade when you arrive for good deals on jeeps from Budget. Aloha and be Safe! **** I highly recommend **** TURO Car , SUV and 4x4 rentals
Awesome ocean views. Papaaloa Country Store , Bar and Restaurant is just down the road . Great pizza and local style fresh food. Nightly live music almost 6 nights a week .
  • A peaceful, beautiful place! Amazing!

  • We had such a wonderful time here even though it was a short stay. Keith and his daughter Ashley we’re both great hosts nice to talk to and helpful with everything. The view is amazing, the sound of the waterfall was soothing and it just felt great to be surrounded by nature and the horses and peacocks. We also explored the river with all its waterfalls. It’s so beautiful and just a short walk from the tent. Everything is a bit rustic, so you need to be comfortable with the outdoors. The outdoor shower was our favorite of the 6 we experienced on this trip. Surrounded by tropical plants, hot water and a great view. We look forward to coming back and staying for longer next time.

  • This is a gorgeous location, the accommodations are simple & clean & we had everything we needed. It is the perfect place to enjoy fresh air and the countryside in HI. The horses, waterfalls, peacocks and chickens were beautiful. We loved it!

  • Keith and his daughter, Ashley were very kind during our stay. The tour of their grounds/property was lovely. We really enjoyed our stay here amongst the jungle, horses and waterfalls + some chickens. You definately need 4x4 to get to the property. We had a Hyundai Elantra and there was no way we could have gotten in without causing damage to the car. Thankfully, Ashley picked us up at the local restaurant due to a flash flood at the streams surrounding their property. We truely appreciated the hospitality and kindness. Ashley was calm and relaxed which put us at ease when it came to the flash flood and getting into the property.

  • Off-grid and off the beaten path. If these are things you like, you will love this place. Stars galore, frogs and the crash of a waterfall singing you to sleep every night, you really get to be a part of nature in Hawai'i . We had zero issues with bugs and the chickens were friendly neighbors!

  • Spotlessly clean we enjoyed our 2 night stay. Some of the touches are a little worn, but the overall feel is complete relaxation and fantastic value. We ate dinner in both evenings there enjoying the view from the recliners to the sea.

  • This bungalow is off-the-grid so expect to unplug and unwind! However, the house is equipped with a generator which enables you to charge small electronics and use a small amount of wifi per day. Follow the very detailed directions on how to get there; definitely recommend 4wd vehicle as there are river crossings and the hills are steep. Located just north of Hilo, the house is a one-room bungalow that is sectioned off into living and sleeping space. It was perfect for the two of us; there is a ‘balcony’ area where one can relax and watch the sunrise over the farm; there is space with a dining table and kitchen space. The kitchen has a refrigerator and a gas stove plate. The sleeping area has a bed with mosquito net to keep bugs out. We could even see the waterfall from the ‘bedroom!’ The bathroom is around the outside of the bungalow (open to air as pictured) and provides a lovely view into the surrounding forest! Numerous animals on the farm included several friendly horses; some rambunctious and noisy chickens; a flock of peafowl; little coqui frogs; and the ubiquitous island geckos! There are many fruit trees on the property and the fruit was amazing! We followed Ashley’s advice and hiked down to the waterfalls on the property— it was really beautiful, and we would definitely stay here again when visiting the Big Island!

  • Keith & Ashley’s place is truly a nature lovers paradise. I had no trouble finding it, and the roads were totally fine with my Jeep rental (as the hosts say: 4WD is highly recommended!). I spent a lot of time around the property exploring, and getting into the pools/waterfalls nearby. The water was brisk, but that’s to be expected this time of year, and I prefer cold water swimming anyway. The horses are friendly, and the chickens were hungry for crumbs! It was very clean, and the bed was comfy. I was a woman traveling alone, and it was perfect from beginning to end. Aloha!

Aloha and welcome to our ultimate paradise. This is a private, resort quality, multi-million dollar estate completed March 2019. Our property is simply breathtaking and is an exclusive, high-end, custom-built masterpiece of concrete and heavy timber design. Designed to be net-zero estate, Hale Laule'a is made of recycled and sustainable materials, makes its own electricity and water, and is working to grow most of its own food on site. The property includes the main house, Hale Laule’a, with back lanai and pool; the Carriage House with an apartment and barn; a micro orchard; a small animal area; multi-use areas; and multiple gardens including the lower garden on the ocean. The space for rent is a one-bedroom apartment located in the carriage house on the property. This space has a private bedroom with a queen size bed, a luxurious bathroom with bidet and rain shower, a full kitchen with range, oven, microwave, and refrigerator, a living room with pull out couch and desk, and an outdoor lanai with custom table and benches for meals and enjoyment of the ocean. A laundry facility is located in the garage portion of the carriage house and for use by guest. Residents do have full use of the Main house pool and back lanai facility, and all garden spaces. While staying at the Carriage House Apartment, a typical day would start by drinking a cup of coffee or tea watching the most beautiful sunrise on the Pacific Ocean from your bed, the lower garden, or pool deck of Hale Laule'a. After coffee, go on a 2 mile round trip walk to Hakalau Beach Park taking in views of Mauna Kea, waterfalls and lush tropical plants. When you arrive to the beach, it will most likely be all yours as you explore the ruins of an old sugar plantation and look in amazement of the natural beauty of Hawaii. Once back, you can jump into the pool for a refreshing swim in the 25-meter lap lane or play a game of volleyball in the sports area of the pool. When done, settle into the lower garden on Hale Laule'a with a good book or arrange for a Yoga or meditation session. After lunch, walk the gardens, visit the farmers market, or arrange for equine therapy or riding lessons with the local horses right up the road. During the winter months, watch the whales frolic right off the property. At night, enjoy the back lanai of the main house by the fireplace, or get into the spa and watch the stars unfold. For privacy, head to the lower garden and sit by yourself surrounded by the ocean on three sides with waves crashing on the rocks below as you drift away to another world in one of the most beautiful spots on this earth. • Chad and Jennifer are really great people and their place is perfect. We enjoyed listening to Chad talk about his property, as well as he should, it is an amazing place. We got a kick out of the family pets, and neighbor Bobo. We would and will recommend their place to anyone. It was truly an enjoyable experience staying there. The personal interaction with Chad and Jennifer made us feel very comfortable and gave us the feeling that we now have friends on the Big Island. Chad helped us find some excellent places to explore and gave us a personnel tour of the park near his place.

    James2020-03-10T00:00:00Z
  • This was a lovely place to stay, beautiful grounds and amenities, and a congenial family that made me feel good about staying at their property. I want to be back.

    Allison2020-03-03T00:00:00Z
  • Chad and Jennifer's place was truly unique (in a good way), special and amazing. Chad provided us with many ideas of what to do on the island in advance of our trip. When we arrived, he and Jennifer and their three cute & friendly dogs--and the giant turtle and ducks that occupy one of many separated areas on their acreage--greeted us and Chad gave us a half-hour tour of the property: the lap pool (which doubles as a pool volleyball court) and spa tub, the equestrian area (they have horses that are there about half the time), and the lawn that slopes down to a point overlooking crashing waves just below and a view of the windward coast looking south toward Hilo. Chad pointed out that, though only about 12 miles from Hilo, they get only one-third the rainfall because the geography funnels rain into Hilo's harbor without moving north. It barely rained at all while we were there, so perhaps that's true. So don't let concerns about rain keep you away. Even when it rains, it tends to rain heavily for an hour or two, often at night, and then clear up. Chad and Jennifer were gracious and attentive hosts. At one point, they played pool volleyball with us. At another point, they brought fresh duck eggs by so we could cook an omelet with them. Not to be missed: The easy, half-mile walk down to a public beach park. We made this walk three times and never saw more than two people. The suite was also impressive, featuring an extremely comfy bed, a carved wooden dining table that's just off the full kitchen, and more than enough space, sitting areas, and cooking utensils we could want. We reserved it for four nights, the minimum, but could easily have stayed much longer as this airbnb and the Big Island vibe combine to lead you into relaxation and a desire to stay and soak in the tropical beauty of the island's uncrowded windward side.

  • Great host from chad and paradise for Hawaii.

    Huang2020-02-22T00:00:00Z
  • If you’re considering Chads place for your stay on the Big Island, look no further!! I couldn’t have been happier with our decision and would gladly stay here again. The space and location were better than described/pictured but waking up every morning to see the horses grazing with the ocean behind them was truly something else. Even better than the space was Chad’s dedication to making sure we made the most of our time on the Island. His recommendations were crucial to what made our trip so amazing and for that I can confidently say this was the best Airbnb experience I’ve had thus far.

    Nick2020-01-28T00:00:00Z
  • Hakalau is truly a beautiful place. Apartment has all amenities you might need for any length of stay. Easy drive to Hilo and many other places. Views from the point are tranquil and awesome.

    Lynda2020-01-16T00:00:00Z
  • Chad and Jennifer are wonderful hosts who will go above and beyond to improve your stay on the Big Island. The property is lovely, with ocean views and lush vegetation. A 20 minute drive north from Hilo, the location is in a quiet neighborhood and easy to find. Friendly and well trained outside dogs live on the property. The use of the pool attached to the host's house is easy and right next door. This is a large and actively maintained property. There are small construction projects still finishing up as well as yard and animal maintenance work that occur during normal working hours on weekdays, some of which produce noise. I'd recommend this place as a good home base to explore the eastern side of the island. Kona is about 2 hour drive; 1 hour to Volcano NP. Just relaxing on the property is well worth the stay: morning breakfast in the rising sun on the porch, enjoying the pool, and sitting surrounded by the ocean on the point.

    Matthew2019-12-02T00:00:00Z
  • Chad is a wealth of information on the island and things to do. He is the best host I have every encountered. I almost felt like royalty staying at his place. Highly recommend the Hale Laule’a!

My place is good for couples, solo adventurers, business travelers, and families (with kids).
1st Floor is the main lobby, with bathroom, kitchenette (refrigerator, microwave, coffeemaker & hot kettle. Dining & sofa area. All rooms accessible to outside lanai's.
The laid back atmosphere, light showers, gift shops, churches and mainly the townsfolk.
  • Real gem about 20min north of Hilo and 10mins down the from akaka falls. Check in and check out is painless, the room is cute, sparkling clean, and had plenty of storage. The building has a lot of charm but the interior feels very updated/well maintained. The kitchenette area near the entrance is very functional with coffee and some food for breakfast in addition to plenty of fridge space and utensils/plates for guests. It felt very functional for longer stays and we wish we could have stayed longer. Highly recommend!

  • We stayed here for a week to explore Big Island. It’s a very relaxing and cozy place to stay! The room was super clean and the bed was very comfortable. Honomu is a very small town but the next city is not to far. It takes some time to get to Kona but if you look for a cozy and quiet place to stay it’s perfect. Highly recommended!!

  • This is a beautiful, clean and modern space, great for families. I stayed with my 14-month-old daughter and the self-serve keurig and fridge stocked with yogurt, whole milk, almond milk and other basics in the downstairs kitchen was supremely convenient. The extra amenities (beach towels, bug spray, flashlights) were a nice surprise, as were the fresh linens and towels every day. Overall everything seemed to reflect the level of thoughtfulness and care that Amy put into this space. Not a lot of food options nearby but it's peaceful and quiet, you can hear the birds at night, and Hilo is only 15-20 min away. Would definitely recommend.

  • This is a very cute hotel. Our room was stylishly decorated and sparkling clean. We enjoyed our stay.

  • Honomu Inn was really wonderful. Clean, tidy, well kept. They've really thought of everything, and we felt very safe and secure (and the A/C worked like a charm!) during our ten-night stay. My one tip would be to be sure to read all of host Amy's commentary on checking in, etc. She was so thorough in detailing what to expect when we arrived, it was a breeze getting to our room. We had the perfect stay, and you can't beat the location.

    Amber2019-11-18T00:00:00Z
  • The Honomu Inn is absolute perfection. The room was sparkling clean and we loved the all white decor. Amy and her team provide very thoughtful touches, breakfast, many recommendations, the room has AC, and it's only 15 min away from Akaka Falls. We truly had a great stay and only have positive feedback for this amazing gem!

  • Fantastic! Clean! Very Nice! The place is beautiful. Very nice lawn and overlook. Large 2 bedroom was self sustaining and has everything needed. Great quiet location on the beautiful Hamakua coast. Perfect for exploring Hilo, Akaka, Honoli'i, Waipio Valley. I read a few reviews for this property which said that it was run down, full of bugs etc... NOT True. This was my 25th time on this side of the island but my first time staying here. I will stay again.

  • As former manager of Guns N Roses, I stay in AIRBNB’s all over the world, and this place is BY FAR the best value for money of any Home I’ve stayed in! When I first saw the Home on the site, I had to question the host (Jade), to see if the price was a “mis-print”!!! The place looks like The Beverly Hillbillies just let you into their mansion, but they’ve moved it onto the oceans edge!!! Each room has a sitting area, a kitchen, and a bedroom (or two)!! In terms of being accommodating, Jade was incredible!! He got back to us within moments of our questions, and he’s a great guy!!! DO NOT MISS THIS RARE GEM!!!

  • The room was large and there was a sense of cleanliness and I was satisfied with satisfaction. Because the room is large it is recommended when staying with a large number of people. I would like to use it again when staying near Hiro.

  • Really cool place to stay, great change from staying in the same old hotels. Giant backyard, amazing ocean view. It seems no one else was renting any of the other eight rooms here so we had the whole house to ourselves. I would rent again.

This elegant Room at the Top of an A-Frame house feels like being inside of a pyramid, with the most incredible view from its own private lanai with French doors where you can watch the exquisite sunrise from bed. The weather here usually 68-78 degrees with refreshing trade winds and just enough rain to create a lush tropical climate with an abundance of fruit trees and colorful, aromatic flowers. The room has a table and chair for your laptop.
Overview Enjoy this 1/4 acre with lots of lush foliage with banana, mango, lemon, tangerine, calamansi, passion fruit and lichee trees. This is a large, specious room (12X16) with a private 1/2 bath (toilet and sink, but no shower). You'll have full access to the house (which is shared with the host or with other guests), including the large downstairs lanai and the living room and kitchen and the downstairs bathroom has a shower and a Jacuzzi tub. We have refreshing trade winds, so if you keep the doors and windows open, there is no need for A/C, but there are plenty of fans. There's a triangle of space above the bedroom wall, between the bedroom and the living room, which is great for ventilation, but when there's a light on in the living room, the light is reflected up into the bedroom. I try to keep the light off in the living room after 9 pm, but if you want extreme noise privacy, this is not the best arrangement. If you want to share the room with 1 or 2 other people, there are 2 twin air mattresses that you would have to blow up yourself (there is an electric pump), and then deflate when you leave. Of course, I provide bedding and towels for everyone. Free parking (on the street, right in front of the house. free papayas or mangoes or tangerines when in season, bananas, coffee, tea, Wi-Fi, Jacuzzi. It’s usually quiet and peaceful in Papaaloa, with lots of local color with the occasional roosters and sheep. In the evenings, the children enjoy playing in the street, and at night the coqui frogs sing their concert. On occasion, the neighbors’ hunting dogs get excited, especially when the wild boar wander down from the hills. There is free parking in front of the house and it's a very safe neighborhood. You will want to have a car, though there is access to a $1 bus if you don’t mind the steep 2-block walk up the hill from Highway 19. This is an excellent central location, just 30 minutes north of Hilo along the coast, past the lush valleys and waterfalls. There are lots of fun restaurants and places to shop in Hilo. The house is just 15 minutes from dramatic Laupahoehoe Point where you can watch the ocean waves crashing against the lava rocks Going south, the house is about 10 miles from KoleKole Beach State Park, Akaka Falls and the world famous Arboretum. Or you can drive north a half hour to historic Honokaa with its restored old-fashioned movie theatre, and a little further north to the lush Waipeo Valley. Or turn west from Honokaa and another quarter hour will take you to the town of Waimea with a brewery and more restaurants and galleries. Or go up Saddle Road to the world-class observatory on Mauna Kea (bring warm clothes for that trip - it snows up there!). A half hour past Waimea will bring you to some of the world’s finest white sands beaches at Mauna Kea and Hapuna, where there is excellent snorkeling and the sun almost always shines. One of the marvels of the Big Island is that it contains 10 of the world's 14 different climate zones. When you dream of a lush tropical Hawaii, with soft trade winds and waterfalls and sensual aromas, and coconut trees swaying in the wind, you are dreaming of the climate of the Hamakua Coast. It is almost always between 68 and 78 degrees here. If you want to be able to wake up in the morning and walk to the beach, you'll need to go to the other side. But then you'll be in the hot, dry, humid climate, and more likely to encounter the vog (smog from the volcano). If you enjoy the lush green, with refreshing breezes and amazing sunrises, this is the place for you. Or, if you have time, plan to spend half your time on this side of the island (the Hamakua Coast on the Hilo Side) and half your time on the Kona side. Getting Around You will want to have a car, though there is access to a $1 bus if you don’t mind the steep 2-block walk up the hill from Highway 19. Extra Details Other Things to Note There is WiFi and a collection of DVDs. There is a landline with free phone calls to the US and Canada. There is decent cell phone coverage if you have AT&T, but other cell phones tend to have intermittent reception. You will have access to the washing machine, dryer and clothesline. People from all backgrounds are welcome here.

  • I had an amazing time there the fruit she had was very good and it was nice to have that little touch. She stayed up until I made it there because it was at night which made me feel better. The views were amazing from the Room the pictures really can't do it much justice. I have enjoyed my time there.

  • Joy’s place is the perfect haven when staying in Laupāhoehoe! The view was stunning, she provided useful tips on local sites and food. There’s a convenient cafe with excellent pizza close by, and the location was great for exploring both the north shore and Hilo. I’d recommend the space to anyone!

  • Such a quaint spot, a perfect spot to see the ocean but a nice secluded yard. I even got to play in the dirt, my favorite thing to do. Books to read, hint, she writes. My favorite Airbnb!

  • Karen’s place is super clean, and well-stocked with everything one needs to feel right at home. She and her family are friendly and welcoming and they have a beautiful farm full of life. I will definitely return and recommend to anyone looking for a conveniently located, yet private and serene farm stay.

  • A centralized location to explore the East side of the island. Easy to make yourself at home and relax. We enjoyed visiting with Karen and the rural location. Definitely worth a visit!

  • Very homey and wonderful

    Christine2020-03-04T00:00:00Z
  • We loved our stay at Karen’s farm and enjoyed being part of the human and animal family. Our place was completely comfortable and perfect for visiting the special places on the island.

    Bob2020-03-01T00:00:00Z
  • This place is amazing, a super cool and spacious getaway on a farm! The place was big, open, comfortable, and clean. Karen made sure we had everything we needed. They are such nice people and told us all about the farm and their animals. We loved every minute of it. Just be prepared to be surrounded by the sounds of animals!

    Daniel2020-02-23T00:00:00Z
  • We loved our stay! We loved being on the farm during the lambing season, and we loved our hosts! They were helpful with ideas and answers to questions, and they let us follow them around during feeding time. The cottage is off the beaten path, so we only heard wind and birds and rain at night. From one window we could see the ocean, and from another, snow on the volcano. Stars and moonlight at night.... The kitchen is well equipped so we had the option to cook our meals there, or eat out. When we took off to explore, Karen provided towels and beach chairs! The cottage is about 10 miles from Hilo, and 2 miles from Acaca Falls and a coffee shop, if you're desperate for town... We were so busy on this trip - we are looking forward to returning for a more laid back stay.

    Claire2020-02-19T00:00:00Z
  • Karen is the most welcoming, lovely lady we’ve had the joy of meeting through our airbnb adventures. She made checking in easy, contacting us close to arrival to ensure we understood the area (where to buy groceries/petrol etc). The property itself is beautiful, whoever designed it should be commended. We were able to cook dinner for ourselves easily and were provided with an ample amount of blankets and towels (thank you! Definitely lacking in other places, we really appreciated it). The goats are super cute and you can say hi to them in the mornings on your way out to explore for the day. If you’re a light sleeper, bring earplugs. And it is a farm, so don’t be shocked in you come across the occasional animal/bug (all friendly and beautiful - inherent with a tropical climate). This property has the warm, relaxing amenities of home whilst enabling the animal lover/adventurer/holidaymaker in you to be fulfilled, enjoy your stay!

Exploring the Big Island of Hawaii does not have to be expensive...try 'glamping' on our small farm! We are a mile from Akaka Falls on the beautiful Hamakua Coast. At 700 feet elevation, our property has year-round breezes and multiple ocean views. Spacious tent with 2 single beds, comfortable mattresses, outdoor shower of timber bamboo, and your own kitchen. We raise much of our own food. Breakfast features our own eggs, coffee, tangerines, bananas, pineapple, papaya, avocados, etc.
If you like the outdoors and the sounds of nature, we are a good match. It is a camping situation, with sleeping, dining and bathing areas separately located, and solar lighting. We are in a rural area, there are sounds of (a few, not many) coqui frogs and chickens. We have hosted farm workers for months in our facility and they enjoyed it, but a five-star hotel we are not. We have three friendly and quiet sheep and two farm cats. You have your own entrance into the property, and you can see as much or as little of us as you want. We are easily available by visit, call, email or text. We live on the rainy side of the island... on purpose, as water is vital to Permaculture. Rain showers tend to be short and intermittent. Slip on, slip off shoes will come in handy.
We are a short drive from Hawaii Tropical Botanical Garden, the historic villages of Wailea and Honumu, Papa’aloa Country Store and Restaurant, featuring live music, and the breathtaking scenery of Laupahoehoe Point. Puna, Hawaii Volcanos National Park and the white sand beaches of Hapuna are within an hours drive.
  • It was one of those once in a lifetime experiences!! Deb and Rick are fantastic hosts. They make sure everything is perfect. Communication was very effective and check in and check out process was very smooth. Deb was so welcoming and made us a great breakfast during our two days stay. Fresh fruits from grown in their farm are damn tasty!! Wonderful conversation about traveling and their farm. I would absolutely stay with them if I were visiting the Island!!!

  • Deb’s place is unique and such a cool experience! Stay here to get a feel for the local life on the island. Deb was so welcoming and made us a great breakfast in the morning with coffee, tea, and local fruit. The tent was pretty big and there were a lot of nature sounds at night as expected. Overall a great place to stay!

Wake up in the morning, look out your window, and see the sun rising gloriously over the ocean. This private bedroom has a comfy queen bed, with Wi-Fi and the shared bathroom is a few steps away, with shower and tub. This pink A-Frame house is up on the hill, just 30 miles north of Hilo along the prettiest drive in the world, past the lush valleys and waterfalls of the Hamakua Coast, centrally located between Hilo and Waimea (Kamuela).
Overview Enjoy this 1/4 acre with lush foliage with banana, mango, lemon, tangerine, calamansi, passion fruit and lichee trees. You'll have full access to the house, and yard and the spacious lanai (porch) with a sweeping view of the ocean, and the living room and kitchen. Upstairs and separate are the master bedroom and a half bath, which is usually occupied by the hostess or up to four other guests (the larger downstairs bathroom has the shower, which is shared by everyone in the house). This is the ideal climate, usually between 68-78 degrees, with refreshing trade winds (no need for A/C, but there is a fan in the room). and just enough rain to create a lush tropical ambiance, with an abundance of fruit trees and colorful, aromatic flowers. The air is fresh and clean, and by the way, the volcano is no longer active. Free parking in front of the house, but on the property, so no one else parks there. Free bananas, papayas, lemons, mangoes, lychee and tangerines when in season and 10% Kona coffee, black and herbal tea, Wi-Fi, Jacuzzi tub. The Cafe has good food, including excellent pizza and burgers, and a full bar and great music every night except Sunday and Monday (it's closed on Sundays). It’s usually quiet and peaceful in Papaaloa, with lots of local color, but do expect the occasional roosters and dogs and at night the coqui frogs sing their concert. You will want to have a car, though there is access to a $1 bus that doesn't run very often if you don’t mind the steep 2-block walk up the hill from Highway 19. This is an old Filipino neighborhood. When the nearby sugar cane operation was closed down, around 1985, the owner built a number of A-Frame houses for the workers to move into, and this is one of them. The house is just 24 miles north of Hilo and about 10 miles from KoleKole Beach State Park, Laupahoehoe Point, Akaka Falls and the world famous Arboretum. Also in nearby Laupahoehoe, there is a free Olympic-size swimming pool, tennis courts, library, gas station and convenience store.
  • Nice room, close to a cafe/bar that’s nice for dinner. Taco Tuesdays is a hit. Little far from everything else but that was expected. Joy was very kind and helped us out when my dad injured his ankle. Very thoughtful host. We appreciated her and her home.

  • I had a very nice stay. The location is very quiet and five minutes by foot to the store and restaurant. Joy it’s very helpful and everything you need is available. The house has a very nice porch end it is very relaxing to sit there and read. I will certainly recommend her place to my friends.

  • The breeze, the view off the lanai, the big plants in the backyard and the quiet neighborhood all added to the experience of Aloha here and to my much needed rest. Also this airbnb is close to many places of interest by vehicle. And I especially liked the small health food store/restaurant/bar and post office less then a half a mile away.

  • Nice, quiet location! Fantastic view of the sea. Nice, uncomplicated communication. There is WiFi, a kitchen that can be shared and sometimes even fresh fruit from the garden. The accommodation was suitable for our stay on Big Island. One should only make sure that the island is quite large. Depending on where you want to go, you should plan travel time. A larger supermarket is no closer than 30 minutes drive.

  • Honomu Inn is by far the best Airbnb I have ever stayed in. The host and innkeeper’s hospitality is unparalleled, and the amenities and cleanliness of the hotel room is incredible! Honomu is just a short drive to Hilo and conveniently located to several great spots in the Big Island (volcano, hikes, farm tours, etc.). We will definitely be back and will highly recommend this place to all of our friends and family!

    Stephanie2020-01-04T00:00:00Z
  • This quaint building is a delightful place to stay for a few nights....out of the business of Hilo but very convenient to all the major roads North, South or West across to Kona. Andrew is extremely polite and more than willing to help with luggage or anything else you need. Also, they have a wide variety of items for use by guests (insect repellent, lanterns, beach chairs, ear plugs, flashlights, etc). Excellent variety of breakfast items & beverages. Full refrigerator to store your own items. After spending two weeks on the Big Island, this is where we will always come back to stay! The cleanliness is unparalleled! The bedding is the softest and mattresses are perfect. The remodel was done with first class accommodation in mind... everything from bathroom fixtures to door hardware & on-demand water heating. This was the only place on the Big Island that we did not see a single insect at all.... they use both traps & electronic bug repellent. The balcony was lovely to sit out & relax in a sleepy little town.... the recommendations for restaurants were spot on, too! Thanks for a wonderful Airbnb experience!

  • Great place, very clean rooms, as well as bright and cool; great place to rest. Highly suggest.

  • This place was absolutely perfect for us! Truly sparkling clean, very modern, and great location for exploring waterfalls and other activities. Hosts were so thoughtful and helpful. I have some family visiting the area in two weeks and I've already recommended the place to them!

  • Sarah (the manager) and her daughter Arora were charming. We loved getting to know them. Sarah was welcoming and had great suggestions for our day trips. We loved our room with the doors that opened to the rooftop. We had a soft rainfall each evening which was relaxing and a nice relief to the hot days.

  • This is a very unique and special place. The Cottage is spacious and well designed. It does take a bit to get there and get through two gates (going and coming and in the rain). But you want to visit paradise, this is your chance. I really did not want to leave.

  • This is a must stay!!! If your looking for quite place away from the hustle and bustle of the main tourist areas , then this is well worth it. Easy access to all mains areas but far enough away to emerge yourself in the true Hawaiian landscape. Thank you for sharing

  • Nice property, secluded, only nature to be heard. The waterfall on the property was an added bonus, while expected, seeing in person made the stay special. Would recommend if any of those items are on your list.

This private cottage offers panoramic views of the spectacular Pacific Ocean. Located in a quiet gated community, this clean and new unit is surrounded by lush tropical palms, flowering hibiscus, banana, mango and avocado trees. Fall asleep to the sounds of a babbling brook, night birds (tiny coquis frogs) and periodically the patter of rain. Most unforgettable is the bathing experience in a pebbled shower to the sight and sound of the brook tumbling over rocks. There is beauty all around!
This Pepeekeo Paradise located on the Hamakua Coast is only: • 23 minutes from Hilo Airport, 1 hour 45 minutes from the Kailua-Kona Airport. • 20 minutes to Rainbow Falls/Boiling Pots and a few more to Wai’ale Falls Hike • 40 miles to Volcano National Park. Nearby Attractions include: • Akaka Falls, • Hawai’i Tropical Botanical Gardens, • Umauma Falls, World Botanical Gardens, • Umauma Experience & Skyline Eco Adventure for Ziplines. Interaction with guests: The owners live in the nearby main home on the same property and are eager to help with questions and concerns.
We live in a gated community that has three different ocean accesses that lead to the coast line. We love going for short hikes to sit and look as the waves crash.
  • We absolutely loved this BnB and we have stayed in a lot! Book it quickly, you won’t be disappointed.

    Mary2020-03-12T00:00:00Z
  • We came in at night, in the rain. The instructions provided were clear and we had zero problems getting there. The path to the Cottage from the parking area is well lot and there are motion sensor lights to enhance your visibility. When we walked in we were greeted with a verbose guide, a beautiful clean house, and cookies! Once we awoke we were greeted with exceptional sunrise and ocean views one way, views of Mauna Kea the other way. All the amenities here are exceptional. Walk the property at least a little, it's just gorgeous.

  • Very nice place to stay. Quite cool in the house in February. Unfortunately, the toilet has no door but only a curtain. Breakfast was delicious as was the avocado from the garden

    Heidi2020-03-02T00:00:00Z
  • This space was perfect! To begin, Sherry was warm and inviting from the start. We were greeted with homemade cookies and lots of recommendations. The guesthouse was beautiful with views you can’t beat. The location was great for us because we were a short drive to Hilo and close to waterfalls and many beautiful lookouts. We truly felt at home while staying here and now feel relaxed and recharged. Thank you, Sherry!

    Mandy2020-02-27T00:00:00Z
  • We loved the cottage, the location, the screen bath room, the short walk to the community lot with the breath-taking views of the ocean...everything!

    Elise2020-02-25T00:00:00Z
  • I stayed at the Pepeekio Paradise with my parents while touring the Hilo side of the Big Island. The cottage is one of the best places I have ever stayed at. It is clean, tidy and extremely beautiful with exquisite decor. The location is perfect- away from the hustle and bustle of the city! Drive a short distance and you get an amazing view of the ocean! Sherry is an amazing hostess. She showed us the cottage as soon as we checked in and made excellent suggestions about places to visit, restaurants, etc. We visited most places she suggested and really enjoyed the experience. I wish we had more than one night at this cottage. I would recommend it to anyone who’s touring the east coast of the Big Island!

    Sonal2020-02-23T00:00:00Z
  • Sherry's place is even better than we thought it would be. We loved the location, the atmosphere with the frogs, chickens and kids loved the goats. We appreciated the cookies and banana bread upon arrival and it was so handy to have the breakfast foods available. The beds were super cozy. And loved the sounds of the rain at night and the ocean breezes.

    Kimberley And Sophie2020-02-21T00:00:00Z
  • It is truly a one-of-a-kind piece of paradise ... we didn't want to leave! The unit is located on the host property which is absolutely magical. It's beautifully decorated, super clean and very comfortable. Sherry is spot-on on making us feel welcome - it had all the touches of home. On our arrival, there was a plate of yummy homemade chocolate chip cookies, as well as bananas & avocados from the property. It was all wonderful. We were there to unplug from hectic work/life schedules and WE DID! We were only there for 2 days, but we did some sight-seeing and hikes based on Sherry's recommendations, watched movies and played cards in the evening. Loved the nature sounds lulling us to sleep (rain, frogs, etc). It is like no where I've ever stayed before (that bathroom!!! OMG loved it!!), and was just what my husband and I needed. Thank you for sharing your place!

  • A simple and nice farm-stay. Check in was very simple, as well as directions to the location. The cottage had a kitchen/patio entrance followed by the main room which had a queen bed and a loft with another queen bed. Please keep in mind the bathroom is in the cottage next door, 3 steps away, but for private use! The ocean views were very nice :)

  • We had a lovely stay in one of Sidra's cabins! The cabin was rustic in a charming way, and was nice and clean. The property itself is beautiful, it's a small farm with some breathtaking views of the ocean! Sidra was a great host and checked in with us a few times to make sure we had everything we needed. She was very responsive to messages and gave some very helpful directions to locate the property. If you stay in these cabins, definitely check out the restaurant/store across the main road from here! It had delicious food and some great live music!

  • Beautiful views of the ocean and lovely landscaping. Very comfortable stay with our own private BBQ. We were one of only two units and enjoyed our own private pool and the grounds to ourselves. Great place to stay during our visit to Hilo's side of the island.

    Jia2019-09-09T00:00:00Z
  • This place feels like a small piece of paradise! The view, gardens, and pool cannot be beat. It feels very secluded and private - the pool area is shared with just one other cottage rental and the main property house is unoccupied. It was perfect for a few romantic and relaxing days. The property manager was kind, friendly, and easy to communicate with. She even helped troubleshoot getting us a lighter for the grill. Our only wish was that it had been a bit better stocked with some basic household/kitchen amenities, but as this is a newer property rental they may include more of that in the future. We loved that the tv was equipped with Netflix and the AC was much appreciated. We spent hours in the pool and admiring the view from the gazebo.... truly a dream location. We would definitely return here!

  • We really had a great time at the cabanas! The hammocks were super comfortable, and just what we needed after spending a few days tent camping. The premises were lovely, and the facilities were clean and readily accessible. Lots of wildlife were around, including a few wild pigs. Overall it was a great experience.

    Jai2020-02-16T00:00:00Z
  • A very nice stay that had more amenities than expected. There were more sites than I had thought, and so we encountered more people than expected. That being said, you'll only encounter them if you go to the main building, as each cabana is fairly isolated. For us, it was great to meet other travelers without having to constantly interact with them. The tent like walls shielded bugs well, and provided good privacy. Very lush area!

This secluded cabin is nestled into the hillside above the river in a rainforest. It offers a private bathroom and a well equipped private kitchenette on a screened-in porch.
This cabin is off-the-grid. Being off-the-grid means that we get all of our electricity from the sun and all of our water is collected from the rain. We are not connected to the island's grid power system. Our solar panels charge a large bank of deep cycle batteries all day in order for us to have power around the clock. Guests are asked not to use any appliances that generate heat from electricity (such as toasters, hair dryers, curling irons, etc...) as they consume too much energy for an off-grid power system.
We are easily accessible to all the Big Island attractions such as Volcanoes National Park (1 hour South), Waipio Valley (1 hour North), and the countless sights and adventures along the Hamakua Coast, the Hamakua House is the perfect location to base your Big Island adventure vacation. • Wonderful, relaxing place. It was very comfortable and had everything we needed. Mathews thoughtfulness for things, like umbrellas and bug spray, in case we forgot was noticed and appreciated. Loved the soothing sounds of water and frogs at night and the water fall was wonderful. Thanks for sharing you place, was definitely hard to leave!

    Libby2020-02-25T00:00:00Z
  • This stay was incredible! The cabin is nestled in a forest with its own private stream - you truly feel like you’re in the middle of a jungle. That being said - the cabin is equipped with everything you need to prepare your own meals, as well as a bathroom with a hot shower (I didn’t expect this, given that it’s in the middle of the forest). The cabin is very conveniently located just 20 minutes north of Hilo, and it a short drive away from Akaka Falls. The drive itself to the cabin is also very scenic! Check in was also super easy. Had a great stay here - would highly recommend, and would definitely come back!

    Jordan2020-02-15T00:00:00Z
  • A truly amazing experience! You wake up and sleep to the sound of the river and get the full rainforest experience. This cabin also has its own private waterfall, wow! Thank you for creating such a beautiful accommodation.

  • This is a wonderful place! The location is prime, if you're looking for seclusion, but want to be decently close to Hilo. It feels like you're in your own little corner of the world. The beds are comfy, and the kitchenette flawless. The surrounding scenery of the creek and waterfall are breathtakingly beautiful to see and hear outside the window during the day and all night long! We loved your place. Thank you.

  • The cabin was the perfect place for what I was looking for. It was private and completely surrounded by amazing beauty. The cabin had everything I needed for my stay both inside and out. All of the kitchen tools were well appreciated and the aloe lotion for sunburns was an amazing find just when I needed it. Thank you so much!

    Paola2020-01-27T00:00:00Z
  • Super neat spot and a great value! So nice to fall asleep to the sound of the river. There's a waterfall swimming hole a minute walk away, fruit trees, and you're in a beautiful rain forest! The cabin is small but cozy with everything needed for a comfortable stay. The lanai has a well equipped kitchen. Tough to beat this set up!

    Rom2020-01-24T00:00:00Z
  • Love the sound of the waterfall, it drowns out the noise of the frogs. Nice cozy cabin. I would repeat.

  • The cabin was clean and sealed off from the bugs. Host was clear with any expectations and instructions. Location was wonderful. Arriving on time for check-in is important (showing up early may cause confusion). Great choice if you want to spend time in the rain-forest of the Big Island.

  • What an amazing experience! Great communication with host, easy check-in, clean place, INCREDIBLE VIEWS! Make sure to get up early to walk the farm to see all the animals out and about, munchin on grass. :) They seemed to be more active in the morning. Would definitely stay here again. Thank you for sharing your beautiful property Sidra.

  • My boyfriend and I stayed at Sidra’s place for one night during our trip to the Big Island. We loved the little cottage! After a day of hiking in the rain in and around Hilo, we were happy to arrive somewhere dry and be able to take a hot shower. The view from the cottage was amazing, and the bed is positioned so that you can look out the window at night and see some amazing stars. There is a really cute general store down the road that we ate at for breakfast on the way out in the morning (closed Sunday!). Overall, the cottage was clean, the bed comfy, and the views amazing. We would definitely stay here again.

  • Wonderful spot. Highly recommend. Great location with amazing views. The sunrise was spectacular. I even saw a whale breach while watching the ocean from my room.

  • Sidra was very friendly and the cabin has a beautiful ocean view! If you are looking for a more comfortable accommodation you might also want to check out the other bigger cottage on the same property next to this one! sidra’s page has the listing. Mahalo Sidra!

  • My husband and I spent three days doing some day hikes on the Big Island and Sidra’s accommodation was PERFECT! We were able to prepare our own food in the kitchenette, and the fresh sea breeze was WONDERFUL! It was such a peaceful area surrounded by noises from the farm and the nature around us. It was a great place to relax after a long day of hiking. We would definitely stay here again!

A beautiful get-away surrounded by nature! One-bedroom + loft cabin, full kitchen, bathroom, w/d, sunny lanai, on our Big Island off-grid permaculture farm. Cabin is nestled in a food forest a few hundred feet from a stunning waterfall with swimming hole in a peaceful bamboo grove. One king-size bed in bedroom, two twin beds in loft, which has a low ceiling and is accessed by steep, narrow stairs. Enjoy organic eggs & free entrance to botanical garden! Ask @ massage by waterfall & stream.
Our goal at Kulike Farm is to create an environment where people live lightly on the land, nestled among the food and medicine they need for sustenance. We strive towards energy and food independence with a great variety and abundance of edible tropical foods.
We live up mauka - towards the mountain - in a lush, green rural area between the Umauma and Hakalau Rivers. At the base of our hill is Botanical World Adventures, which has beautiful gardens and a fun zipline. Every Tuesday the nearby farmers have a delightful farmer's market in the gardens, complete with ready-to-eat food and music. Umauma Zip Line is also at the base of our hill, just to the north. We have views of both the ocean and Mauna Kea. Soft trade breezes grace us by day, and a cooler breeze blows down off the mountain in the evening. The night sky is alive with stars. Two beach parks are nearby, Hakalau and Kole Kole, fun to explore on foot but currently closed to cars. Honomu, the closest town with services (small convenience stores, cafes, gift shops and boutiques), is around 5 miles south, and here you can also visit the stunning Akaka Falls, and go on a short hike. The Papa'aloa Country Store and Cafe are 15 minutes to the north, just before Laupahoehoe, which is where you will find the closest gas station, another convenience store, an outdoor pool, small library, and beautiful beach park at Laupahoehoe Point. Hilo, which is 25 minutes south, has great restaurants, black sand beaches, museums, the University, a vibrant farmer's market, and much more.
  • Everyone has said it - I’ll say it again! It’s a fantastic space, and Rachel is super quick to answer and accommodate. I ate like a queen - the breakfast basket is stunning....I also asked for some additional food for dinner, she showed up with a bag of greens and taro and magic. There are so many touches that are spectacular and sweet. Every time I think, oh wouldn’t it be nice if there was a lamp here.....cue the lamp. Or a tiny rug? There it is. Especially in the kitchen. All the goodies. Oil. condiments. All for you. I loved it. I really hope to be back!!

  • A magical retreat!

    Alexander2020-02-02T00:00:00Z
  • This stay made my trip. Learning about ecological and sustainable methods of living off the land was awesome. I highly recommend taking the tour. The comfortable, well-stocked cabin was surrounded by food forests. The fruit basket and farm fresh eggs were such a treat, as was the chocolate that is made from cacao grown on site and local honey. Rachel's suggestions for food, markets, and entertainment were really great

    Dan2020-01-29T00:00:00Z
  • Wow. What an incredibly special place. If we could go back and change something it would probably be to stay at Rachel's place for our whole trip. Do not miss out on the farm tour and the DIY breakfast. It was eye opening learning about the farm and very endearing. This made our trip to the Big Island a more authentic experience. The Forest Hale was comfortable and clean with everything we needed. We did not have any issues with bugs. Be prepared for humidity but after all you are in the rainforest. I cannot recommend this AirBnB enough.

    Abbey2020-01-27T00:00:00Z
  • Great House, great location if you are looking for peace and quiet. Mega Chill. Mahalo

    Zachary2020-01-22T00:00:00Z
  • Rachel's place was worth the splurge as I travelled on my own. Her place was relaxing, private, nicely decorated, roomy and so cool with its surrounding in the rainforest/farm. I had a little visiting gecko and I actually liked sleeping to the sounds of the coqui frogs and rain hitting the roof. The King size bed was comfortable. I loved having the option to do free laundry and a dryer. I highly recommend the $10 fruit basket that came with seasonal fruits grown on the farm, homemade loose leaf tea, and 4 eggs. Rachel made an excellent guidebook of recommendations of restaurants and things to do in the area. She was a quick responder and dropped by to introduce herself shortly after I checked in. There are plenty of towels including beach towels. I didn't have a chance to use the beach supplies including boogie boards and lawn chairs because it was raining a lot during the couple days I was there. The private waterfall access was the main reason I booked this place and there is a nice bamboo forest leading to it too. Remember to bring shampoo, soap, and conditioner because there isn't any included in the listing.

    Melody2020-01-14T00:00:00Z
  • This stay is a 30 minute drive north of Hilo, very remote (rent a Jeep!), and offers a rain forest experience. The only sounds we heard were rain and the frogs that squeak at night (don't worry, she has earplugs if you need them). We came in January when it was very rainy, but the house was cozy and the land beautiful. We took the option to get some fresh eggs and fruit and made breakfast on our own all week.

    Siri2020-01-13T00:00:00Z
  • This place was fantastic. The hosts were very friendly and accommodating. The farm is great. We took the tour, which was interesting and worth the money. Kids really loved the rabbits and chickens.

  • A spacious home in a truly lovely and rural location, with plenty of beauty to explore nearby. Cleaner than clean, and a kitchen that rivaled the one at home. Wonderful experience.

  • This place is fantastic! The home, gardens, amenities, kindness and considerations from the hosts were tops! We loved the Coqui sounds at night and sitting in the bug-free screened-in porch. The house is sparkling clean, beds wonderful and was amazingly supplied. Thank-you so much!

  • AMAZING! Seriously, I cannot say enough good things about this home! Spacious and inviting, comfortable and beautiful, and seriously the best-equipped AirBnB we've ever had the pleasure of visiting! We have stayed at AirBnBs in several states and 4 countries, and this was, by far, the nicest! Forgot a toiletry? No problem! Looking for a condiment or kitchen item to make your meal? They've got it! We will, absolutely, be back in the future! <3

Very secluded beautiful home with ocean views along the Hamakua Coast! Enter with your own hidden driveway to a completely private piece of paradise! Sweeping lawns and spectacular views of the beauty of the islands. Only 15 minutes from Laupahoehoe beach park and 25 minutes from Hilo.
Home has a beautiful covered lanai with spectacular views! Patio table and 8 chairs along with two hanging hammocks allow you to truly enjoy those views!!! Huge yard including a fire pit for your private use. ***In accordance with local laws, Please contact the Hawaii Fire Department (808-961-8336) and give them the address if you plan to build a fire. Mahalo!
Only 15 minutes from Laupāhoehoe point beach park. Less than 10 minutes from Papaaloa Country Store. 25 minutes from Hilo. Our favorite things to see, things to do, and places to eat: Going north (turning left out of our driveway) there is Papa’aloa country store less than 10 minutes away that is really worth going to. You can buy most necessities there and some nostalgic fun stuff, but they also prepare fantastic food in the back and have a little restaurant as well. They have live entertainment sometimes on weekends. Turn left out of our driveway, go around the first big gulch and then watch for the sign. there is a road angling off to the right that takes you straight to it. Laupahoehoe Beach Park is only a little further past Papaaloa. Go around the second big gulch and turn right, follow the windy road all the way down to the point. You can picnic there, play ball and swim. Fantastic views as well and learn about the devastation of the tsunami that wiped out the little school that used to be there. About a half hour north of us just before you get to Honokaa is Tex’s Drive-In. Fantastic food and the best malasadas (Portuguese donut common to Hawaii) served hot!!! South of us (turn right out of our driveway) watch for the signs to take the Scenic Route. It is the old road that heads to Hilo with spectacular views and things to see. Truly the beauty of the islands. In Honomu, about 10 miles from us is Akaka Falls. There is a short hike to see all the falls but so worth it!!! Breathtaking views and you get to experience the gardens of Hawaii!!! In Hilo, Rainbow Falls is right downtown!! Easy to access and breathtaking!! Coconut Island is fantastic with picnic areas, surrounded by little beaches and towers to jump off if you have the nerve! The farmers market is fantastic!! The best two days are Saturday and Wednesday. If you are in the area, that is a real highlight!! You’ll love it! It is located right next to the storefronts at Hilo Bay. The first storefront next to the farmers market has a little entrance to several places to eat. The Thai food there is wonderful and the shave ice is fantastic!!! Get the works!! Several beaches in Hilo that are great are in the Keaukaha area. Onekahakaha is a great little kids beach, then there is Richardson’s beach, For Miles Beach. Several along there. For choices of real traditional food, try Hawaiian Style Cafe. Quite a long wait but very good. Vernas Drive-In or Ken’s House of Pancakes are great too. Try the coconut syrup at Ken’s!!! You’ll get hooked! Big Island Candies right in Hilo town is a great place to visit as well. They let you sample a few things and watch them make the candies. Try the chocolate dipped shortbread cookies!! Super yummy!! Check out what’s happening with the lava flow. This is always changing and devastating, but beautiful!
  • Situated in a little slice of heaven. Feels really secluded even though it is near the highway.

    Osamah2019-12-14T00:00:00Z
  • This was one of the best Airbnb stays we’ve had in a while. It’s a very unique property - it’s super secluded and has views from the wraparound deck of the ocean. Things like a surfboard and boogie boards and beach toys, hammock on the deck and well kitted our kitchen were nice touches. The loft with its hatch access was fun - as was the huge bathtub. We felt like we were in good hands, and would absolutely stay here again!

Beautiful golden sunrises over the Hamakua Coast and bbq on ocean view lanai. All linens and towels are washed and bleached after each visit. Satellite TV with movie and sports package, WiFi internet, and strong cell phone signals on most carriers. Comfortable queen size bed and attached bathroom with spacious custom tile shower showcasing sea glass found on Hawaii's Hamakua coast. A peaceful country setting with wide ocean views provide the perfect home base for all your Big Island expeditions.
  • Great place in a convenient location just north of Hilo. We were able to tour the east side of Hawaii north and south with a home base to go back to that was immaculate. Wonderful list from Sandy of what to see and very friendly host. A definite must in Hawaii.

  • Great place to stay with excellent hosts. 5 stars in all categories. Off the beaten path in a beautiful orchard so you can relax after a day of seeing Hilo sights. Yet close to everything Hilo has to offer. We stayed for a full week and loved every minute. When we left we felt the hosts were long time friends.

  • We had a great stay here. A short drive to Hilo, but nice and quiet. And a perfect place from which to explore Hilo and the National Park. The orchard was idyllic and the hosts very welcoming.

    Becky2019-11-21T00:00:00Z
  • Well maintained cottage in a beautiful orchard. Bob and Katy are super nice and they make sure our stay is as convenient and comfortable as possible. Location wise, its just off highway 19 outside Hilo, which makes it perfect for visiting the east side of the island. Overall, staying in Bob and Katy’s cottage by itself was among the most memorable highlights of our whole trip.

    Yuanpeng2019-11-17T00:00:00Z
  • Bob and Kady's place was very nice, clean, comfortable and came as advertised. Their place served as a great launching point for exploring the east side (Volcano, Akaka Falls, Rainbow Falls, Hilo, Mauna Kei, Waipio Bay, Kaumana Caves and more. At the end of the day, we looked forward to returning to the serenity and comforts of the Orchard Cottage. Thank you Bob and Kady (and Lily) for your kindness and hospitality! Steve and Cathy

The Umauma Experience Grand Melemele Home is Your Hawaiian Destination. It is located near Hilo, but far from The Real World. At 3300 sq. ft., 4 bedrooms and 3 bathrooms, it offers plenty of room for everyone to enjoy times together and to have their own space!

Your dreams are now reality as the The Umauma Experience Grand Melemele Home is ready and waiting for you! The Umauma Experience Grand Melemele Home is more than a “vacation rental” it is “Your Destination”! Closest to the tiny village of Hakalau, it is located near the quaint town of Hilo, but far from “The Real World”. As you approach, prepare to have your breath taken and for the shock of disbelief that you are truly arriving at your own piece of paradise. It’s true, the majestic 3300 sq. ft. golden (melemele) plantation-style home is yours - ready to supply some serious relaxation, fun, and enjoyment! Immediately, you’ll realize that there’s plenty of free parking space in the front, but later you’ll find that there’s even a separate fully-enclosed 730 sq. ft. two-car garage in the back which is connected to the home by a covered walkway, just like those at the fancy resorts. Forget the luggage for now and just explore this new oasis you’ve discovered. At the front, pass under the white arbor, up the sidewalk, and up the stairs to the magnificent covered wraparound lanai (porch). If you can, curb your excitement and take a moment to catch your breath in the comfy chairs on your left. Start to look around and notice a sampling of what is to come: fine furnishings (especially the koa wood table), the warm trade winds, the fresh air - full of tropical scents, the lush vegetation… Did you see the size of the ferns along the walkway? Okay, now it’s officially “Your Vacation”! It’s your decision: Relax and enjoy, continue the journey, or not decide - that’s alright. In fact, you’ve just been touched by the aloha spirit and “kealoha” or “the love”. Whether you are visiting for the first time or you’re native born, you’ll appreciate this special feeling when you share special moments with loved ones in Hawaii. So, it’s time to move on. You can’t wait any longer! It’s time to experience what The Umauma Experience Grand Melemele Home has to offer. As you enter, you’ll realize the palatial size of this luxurious home. To your left, the great room will draw you in. First, there’s the sitting area complete with it’s own fireplace which will be waiting for you when you’re ready to jump into your travel guide or just lose yourself in your favorite novel. Look ahead and see the expansive combination of your living room, dining room, and kitchen. Quickly, you’ll notice that there’s lots of room and everyone will be able to enjoy times together and have plenty of room to have their own space. At the end of the day, the soft couch and padded chairs will pamper you as you lounge around the large screen television which is amply supplied with cable service and a dvd player. If you should decide that you need to connect with the real world (to brag about your wonderful place on the Big Island), there’s WIFI service throughout the home. Landline telephones are provided for local calls, too. If you can, resist the urge to step out on the back covered lanai and toward the pool. You’ll be there soon, and besides, shouldn’t you change into your swimsuit first? By this point, you’re beginning to expect to be amazed, and the dining area and kitchen will not disappoint! The dining set will certainly serve as your base from which to investigate all things Hawaiian in the culinary universe: from fresh-caught fish, to locally grown exotic fruits and vegetables, to Big Island raised beef, to local favorites like lau lau, loco moco, sushi, or saimin. Whether you cook it yourself or get take-out, you’ll soon find out that everything tastes better on the Big Island! It doesn’t matter if you’re a “Top Chef” or just the king of mac ‘n cheese, the fabulous kitchen may become your own indoor getaway. It’s hard to miss the exquisite vented Viking range and oven and all of the space to use it. There’s even your own private big island ready for preparing, mixing, and enjoying, complete with views of the dining and living areas. So, you can follow your cooking show or the big game as you sip your famous Hawaiian coffee. Continuing through the lower level, you’ll find the complete laundry room with a washer and dryer and the classy restroom with a shower. Forgot your toothbrush? No worries. Toiletries, towels, etc. are provided. Finally, you’ll arrive at the downstairs’ bedroom where you’ll find a comfortable queen-sized bed, complemented by closet space and more fine furniture. As you proceed, you’ll now appreciate a few things that you may have missed as you entered: the grand entryway and staircase are now inviting you to ascend to the upper level. As you reach the top, you’ll soon notice the unique library and its views of the sparkling blue ocean. Beyond, you’ll find two more large bedrooms with queen-sized beds and more wonderful furniture. About now, you’ll think, “I’m in beautiful warm Hawaii, with cooling ocean breezes, and wait, there’s air conditioning available throughout the home if I need it. What more can I hope for?” Again, you’ll find a well-designed restroom with a tub and a shower. Now you’re thinking, “These rooms are really large!” But wait, there’s more… You step into the next room, and you begin to wonder, “What is this, another living room?” But then it hits you, “This is the master bedroom!” The king-sized bed almost looks small in this enormous room, which has its own sitting area and a walk-in closet big enough to hang months’ worth of outfits. Finally, what goes better with a breathtaking master bedroom than an elegant master bathroom? This bathroom is an architectural experience all its own. Outfitted with a clawfoot roll top bathtub, it’s a restroom built for two: dual sinks and adjustable dual shower heads in a gigantic tile and glass-block shower. Now it’s time to grab your luggage, pick your bedrooms, and change into your swimsuits, because it’s time to test the pool! Follow the covered walkway, step into the lavish round swimming pool/therapeutic mineral bath combo that will melt your stress and re-energize your spirit! Swimming in a mineral pool is like a beauty treatment for your skin, hair, and body. Rinse off under the convenient poolside shower, relax at the patio set on the covered back lanai, and fire up the grill for dinner. Find your favorite spot. Sit down and try to take it all in. You’re really here: in Hawaii, in paradise, and at your own personal mansion! When you’re ready, head out and experience our fascinating Big Island. The famous Umauma Falls is only minutes away. Honoli’i, a top surfing spot is just down the road. Galleries, shops, and museums abound in Honomu and Hilo. Don’t forget to watch for whales and dolphins. Explore the areas several beaches ready for you to do anything or nothing at all! The possibilities are endless. So, how will you ever leave? Don’t worry. The Umauma Experience Grand Melemele Home will be ready and waiting for your return. We hope that it will become your Hawaiian getaway for generations to come! • This rental property is absolutely lovely! The space was perfect and ample for our party of 4 couples/families. The reception is very spotty and I rarely had any cell reception, but they offer a land line and have WiFi to connect to. I actually liked not having much cell reception because it allowed for us all to really take in the beauty around the home. Felt that this was the perfect rental property for a peaceful and private feeling getaway.

  • Clean, lovely pool, beautiful home . Quiet location .

    Aran2020-02-17T00:00:00Z
  • This was a fantastic place to stay! We were a group of 5 adults and found the home spacious, clean, and well stocked. The location was close to Hilo yet it felt like you were in your own private tropical oasis in the backyard. Our group took advantage of a lot of the amenities of the home such as the well appointed kitchen, grill, pool, washer, and dryer - all were fully functional and of a high quality. There are AC units in each of the bedrooms and on the first floor and we used those in the evening to keep the moderate humidity at bay. That said, there are numerous ceiling fans throughout the house and they keep the home cool as well. This home is close to numerous great places to explore (definitely check out the Botanical Gardens and the Hilo Farmers Market, to name but a few). Sharla was very welcoming and responsive to any messages that I sent her. Overall, our group really enjoyed our time in this home. Mahalo!

  • Such a over the top fabulous place, we had the best time making family memories there! We stayed for four days and it really was five stars

  • This is a wonderful home & property!! Enough room for 6 adults & 3 kids. Everyone enjoyed their time & we love the secluded area with the gecko’s, frogs & as our grandkids call them, the other beeshies.. we will be back one day 😊

  • The over all experience my wife and I had here was wonderful! The location was close enough to Hilo and volcano that we could enjoy checking out new places during the day without eating up to much time driving. The pool was a perfect temperature for day or night enjoyment, and the grass surrounding it was soft and pleasant to walk on. We had a blast with the floats and yard games we brought. Plus there was enough space between the house and the neighbors it kept everything private. When we walked into the house it was extremely clean and well decorated. Each room has its own air conditioner so even though it was hot outside it was very comfortable inside. We did forget to bring some things to cook with but they had items in the pantry that saved the day! The host was very nice and quick to respond to our questions. All in all I would recommend this place to friends and family.

    Bryce2019-09-25T00:00:00Z
  • You will have plenty of space for 8 or more people. The kitchen is well stocked with cooking utensils if you prefer to cook in. There is a new gas grill outside the house on the back porch. The heated mineral pool was a big plus after a long day of hiking or just chilling with the family after dinner.

  • Laurels place is great. It has privacy and a warm feeling. She provides her guest with a lovely fruit bowl and banana bread.

    Gregory2020-02-15T00:00:00Z
  • Laurel was super helpful with places to visit around the island, as well as making sure everything was just right at the cottage. The property is beautiful, with many trees and a great location. We would definitely recommend it and would come back for sure!

    Logan2020-02-04T00:00:00Z
  • The place was perfect! A nice welcome basket, it was spotless, and the outdoor space was even more beautiful than the pictures. We have a 1 year old and he loved the open space. Only slight downfall is the dogs do bark early in the morning and woke up him up each morning but if you’re use to dogs, it wouldn’t be a problem. Such a beautiful place. Would definitely stay again.

    Rob & Jodi-Rae2020-01-27T00:00:00Z
  • This was an absolutely lovely place! It felt a bit like coming to an estate in farm country where everything is lush and green. Laurel was a wonderful host and satisfied my curiosities about the property and its flora and fauna. Everything we needed was in the rental. Super clean and tasteful. The majestic giant royal palms truly are the sentinels that stand watch outside your doors and are there to greet you while you sip your morning coffee. The fruit that Laurel provided from her own orchard was such a fabulous treat and became the main part of every breakfast. This is a great jumping off point for Hilo and the northern part of the island. Patrick

    Thomas2020-01-12T00:00:00Z
  • Laurel's place is wonderful! The fruit plate she prepared for us is amazing, that is the most delicious papaya we have ever had. All the fruits are farmed by herself. We would highly recommend her place.

  • Great place with a great host!

    Kainalu2020-01-07T00:00:00Z
  • Perfect quiet getaway just north of Hilo. Laurel, the host, provided special touches that made us feel right at home. We enjoyed the fresh fruit, bottled water, coffee, and banana bread. The sauna was especially a nice touch after our long hikes and car ride. They do have some dogs on the grounds which didn’t bother us. Laurel let Our son hold one of the puppies which he just adored. This place was amazing and highly recommend as an alternative to a hotel.

Hamakua Ocean View Private Room Magnificent ocean view! on a lychee farm. Fresh fruits available what's in season. Near Papaaloa Country Cafe with live music, museums, Laupahoehoe Point Beach Park. Private water falls, Botanical gardens, and Umauma Zip lines! About 20 minutes from Hilo and Waipio Valley!
Private room in a gorgeous spacious farm house
  • Great location to stay in while you're on the Hilo side of the big island. If you're lucky, you'll be treated to some lychee... But it's truly dependent on the season (I was treated to longan!). Small little issue with ants in the bathroom but it's a farm with sheep roaming around...Can't expect it to be the cleanest place on earth. I hope to stay here on future visits.

  • The house is in a beautiful farm overlooking the ocean. Oksana was friendly and accommodating.

  • This is a beautiful hobby farm overlooking the ocean. The room is so clean and comfortable. The bed and pillows feel like a cloud! The room is separated from the rest of the house via a hallway and another door but if someone is home/the door is unlocked, it's easy to get filtered water from the outside of the refrigerator, use the microwave, or chat with Oksana. We loved eating our breakfast out on the patio overlooking the ocean. There are a lot of sheep grazing- even right outside our window! We were lucky enough to see 2 newborn baby sheep too. :) Overall this was the perfect place to rest our heads for a few nights between day trips on the east side of the island.

  • Mary was a wonderful host and even gave us a little tour of her property. We had a great time in this “off-the-grid” cottage!

    Kimberly2018-10-23T00:00:00Z
  • We had a great experience at the Garden Hideaway, and really enjoyed meeting Mary. We especially loved stargazing away from all of the city lights and savored the beautiful view during breakfast in the Teahouse. This spot is a hidden treasure, for sure!

    Caleb & Christyn2018-10-11T00:00:00Z
  • The garden cottage was well appointed and beautiful. Mary was a lovely hostess. We especially enjoyed the tour of her little eco-farm. Loved the outdoor bathroom and the tea house. It’s a drive to Hilo and if you like being in a serene setting this is a great place.

    Alexa2018-06-24T00:00:00Z
  • Don't miss having coffee or tea in the little tea house - it has such a great view of the ocean! We enjoyed cooking & slept very deeply amidst the sounds of birds and frogs. Really a joy!

    Lee Ann (& Ike)2018-05-21T00:00:00Z
  • Two thumbs up for the Garden Home Hideaway! While this property is off the beaten path, that is exactly what makes it so special! Mary's responsiveness, recommendations and directions were outstanding. She is admirably very committed to conservation and sustainability. I enjoyed falling asleep and awaking to the sounds of nature and visiting with her very well behaved pups! The outdoor bathroom arrangement was unique and enjoyable and despite my mosquito concerns, I only saw one even though there was loads of rain. The drive to Hilo was quick and easy and the property is located near several really wonderful sites on the Hamakua coast including the botanical gardens and Akaka falls. Highly recommend!

    Jeanne2018-05-12T00:00:00Z
  • A lovely off-the-grid experience on a beautiful property. We enjoyed sitting in the tea house as it rained and listening to the frogs at night. Also loved the open air bathroom. Mary is a great host!

    Lauren2018-05-08T00:00:00Z
  • I can't brag on Mary and her place enough. This truly is an oasis. If you want to retreat to pure solitude with epic views, you will love it here. Each and every detail of Mary's property is stunning. The cottage, tea room, plants(!!!), and yard...are all individually beautiful. The bed is SO comfortable, and we loved the added bonus of puzzles and games in the closet. That open air bathroom...oh man. Best bathroom in the world. We also decided to cook the last night we were there. Everything we needed was at our fingertips. It felt like we were at home, and we were sad to leave. I've never had the opportunity to experience true off-the-grid living, and now I'm hooked. To live off the land (and to learn how it works) is really special. Although she has a backup plan (generator), it is much more satisfying to conserve energy and water. It causes you to think a bit differently, which I believe everyone should experience. Mary herself is very kind, and we enjoyed getting to know her and her 2 dogs. Those dogs are very sweet and so smart!! Normally we don't hang out too much with hosts, but she was an absolute pleasure. We miss her company as much as we miss the physical space!! The next time I visit the Big Island, I will definitely be staying here. No contest. I almost regret not having booked our entire stay here. It was such an amazing time, and I cannot wait to come back.

There is one comfortable reading chair, a nice teak table with two chairs and a cozy queen size bed. There is an attached shower and toilet facility and a kitchenette with a gas stove, mini fridge, pots, tea kettle and dishes. The Mango Tree Cottage is a place to restore. Also check out Akiko's profile to the right for other accommodations.
Wailea is a quaint old plantation village of about 12 households. It is a very friendly and warm community where we know each other. Our families know each other. Every Tuesday, we have our community market and we gather to share, sell, and trade food; great food for our bodies and souls.
  • Our stay with Akiko was an extraordinary one. We loved the mango tree house within the little jungle and we had the best sleep in this cute cottage ever. The sound of the nature is amazing. We also loved our own meditation space. But even more amazing is Akiko herself. Meeting her was truly a bliss. She is like a confetti shower and you feel home and loved right away. Her yoga skills impressed us even more and reminded us to really move our rusty bodies to stay as young and fresh as Akiko. What a magical stay. Thank you Akiko. We love you.

    Annelie2020-02-19T00:00:00Z
  • It was a delight to stay at Akiko’s tranquil b&b. I hope we’ll be able to return sometime, not least to hear more of Akiko’s stories over morning coffee.

    Elizabeth2020-01-07T00:00:00Z
  • I loved living here for 29 days! I stayed in the spacious Mango Cottage and traditional Hale Aloha house. Each home had unique features and were wonderful properties. This place took me back to a time of warm welcomes and feeling part of a caring community- ohana (family). Here, I fell asleep to gentle rains and nature’s song; discovered Hilo’s authentic local culture; and met positive, friendly people. We had daily zazen meditation, yoga classes, twice a week, and volunteer work available. I enjoyed serving senior holiday lunches and participating in Wailea’s 22nd mochi pounding event. I can't wait to come back. It was an honor to meet Akiko Masuda. She is fascinating. She dances, wrote children’s books, starred in the movie “August at Akiko’s”, and established the nonprofit Wailea Village Historic Preservation Community trust to help preserve old structures, create affordable housing, and spur employment opportunities. Akiko’s place exceeded my expectations. It’s sure to exceed yours too. The amazing experiences here will forever warm my heart. Mahalo (thank you) Akiko.

  • Akiko is a kind soul, very recluse area but beautiful. Recommend to anyone looking for a quiet get away in the nature of big island.

    Dorothy2019-09-01T00:00:00Z
  • We stayed at the Mango cottage and couldn't have been happier. So private and tropical we were serenaded to sleep by the sounds of nature. Akiko was a wealth of information and very generous. I usually have trouble relaxing on vacations, but the atmosphere was so tranquil you can't help yourself but give in. I truly had a great time and feel like a better person for it. Thank you Akiko!

  • Akiko's place was wonderful and very pleasant to stay. Akiko is such a sweet, wise, and kind host, along with other guests. It was lovely to meet and chat during breakfast gatherings with fresh fruit and delicious ginger tea. We look forward to visiting again in the future!

    Beth2016-05-23T00:00:00Z
  • This is the most magical cottage set in the jungle of Hawaii. I stayed here for 5 weeks, and it was one of the best decisions I have ever made! The cottage itself is dreamy... Fresh, warm air, the sounds of crickets and coqui frogs, surrounding jungle canopy, flowers, banana trees, avocado trees, mango trees... A minutes walk from numerous lush waterfalls and ocean views. With high ceilings and large windows, it felt like paradise. I woke up every morning so grateful and blessed to be there, and often to the scent of freshly cut jasmine flowers Akiko had left. Only a couple feet away is the cutest bathroom and kitchen, with hot showers and a working stove. Just as delightful was Akiko, with her scrumptious breakfasts and wonderful stories, I always enjoyed spending time with her. And boy does she make the best ginger tea ever! She was always so sweet and welcoming, helpful and wise. And her children's books are absolutely adorable! The guests that come through here are always interesting and kind as well. Couple notes: it's about 20 min drive to Hilo, but well worth it. Akiko holds meditation every morning open to all, including first-timers. This sleepy town has a farmers market on Tues 3-530 with delectable Thai food and fruits as local as it gets. Bring big screen!! Being that you're in the jungle, there are mosquitos. And of course, don't forget to rest! I left feeling more myself than when I came, cleansed and rejuvenated. Thank you Akiko for sharing your beautiful home!

  • Prospective Big Island AirBnb-er: Jade's Big Island oceanfront Hamakua Coast estate (North/quick R off quasi-freeway) is immediately/10 min N of Hilo along Hawaii Belt Rd. It is an incredible property and far worth it to spend some time there. With yourself, or as a group. I highly suggest it as a property to consider, both for literal location, as well as simply an amazing estate to wake up and watch the sunrise over the ocean (E facing rooms, but all have their strong attributes, (very good for groups as you may tailor the room selections based on the tailored preferences for each individual in your work and/or vacation group. Regarding Jade as a host, he was professional an prompt. I would very much like the opportunity to work with him again. Thanks Jade! Regards, TC

  • This place is very luxurious and super relaxing! Bring a good book to enjoy in the great backyard that overlooks the ocean from a cliff. It's nice and quiet and it was the perfect way to end our Hawaii trip after having been on the touristy side of the island first. It was really cool to find this place.

    Diane2017-07-06T00:00:00Z
  • The room was large, very clean! Half an hour's drive from the city center! Not a good look! Food shopping is not very convenient! Bed is too high for Asian height.! Some of your room rate!

  • My friend and I had a wonderful stay in the whole cottage with the green trim. The cottage is rustic and peaceful. There are animals everywhere, and as previous guests stated they can get a little noisy but we didn't mind at all and slept right through it. The view is incredible! And the location is great, easy to get to the north part of the island and Hilo is only a 30 minute drive. The decor is adorable and we both felt at home :)

  • My husband and I stayed at Sidra’s place for two nights and had a great time. The patio out back has an amazing view- perfect place for your morning coffee! We never met Sidra but she was still an outstanding host. Her responses were quick and she was more than willing to accommodate us. Thank you for providing the delicious coffee :)

  • Sidra’s place is a perfect little cottage. It’s quiet, rural, comfortable and relaxing. Located close to a local general store cafe & bar. Highly recommended.

  • Sidra's place is really nice and well decorated! Moreover, it is perfectly located. Sidra was very responsive as well. We did not have hot water one night but she was quick at fixing the problem. We did not make use of the farm and deck as we were always on the go but we are sure it is a great plus.

  • Beautiful, serene, and off the beaten path. Waking up to a spectacular sunrise over the ocean every day was a dream.

    Katie2020-02-27T00:00:00Z
  • The cabin was really nicely kept and decorated. It is located on a property with a farm and a couple of decks for yoga, which made for a very welcoming vibe. The cabin also has it's own deck on the east side, perfect for watching the sun rise over the ocean.
