  • Very cute space - it was comfortable and cozy! Our time at Jennifer’s Place was very relaxing, and we especially loved the two goats!

  • The best sleep and the most comfortable place in Iowa.

  • Jennifer's place truly is a charming studio apartment! It was very clean with soft towels and bedding. She is such a thoughtful host - there were snacks waiting for us, plus the weather turned very cold that day, and she had extra blankets and the heat ready for us. She was very responsive, and went out of her way to find out more about the Brush Creek Canyon preserve we planned to visit on our stay. Getting to see and feed Laverne and Shirley was a bonus. We - including our dog-child - felt very comfortable and welcomed - and we want to come back to stay!

  • This is a lovely place to stay on a quiet street. The house is old style and charming with interesting furniture to compliment the style. The bed was super comfortable and the area was super clean. The hosts live across the street so if you needed something, they were right there; while you still had the place to yourself. Will stay here again since I have family in town.

  • This is a nice country apartment with a great bed and amenities. Snacks and drinks were provided but limited pots and pans made cooking difficult in the ample kitchen area.

    Stephen2019-09-30T00:00:00Z
  • Jennifer’s communication was awesome throughout our entire trip from beginning to end. Her goats are the cutest ever and such a treat. She and her entire family set up in their barn/recreation area for us to watch the Georgia Bulldogs play football because we are huge Georgia fans. We were there for family weekend in Decorah Iowa at Luther College; I was a little worried about the distance but the short drive was well worth it! We will definitely be back many more times as our son is only in his second year at Luther! We really appreciate everything they did for us. We ended up being later than we anticipated on Friday night and they turned on the air condition for us ahead of time and had everything at the perfect temperature for us to come in and go right to sleep. Great stay!!

  • Jennifer and her husband were extremely friendly and welcoming! They make you feel right at home. We all enjoyed feeding the goats and chickens in the backyard. Would highly recommend this place!

  • It was our second time staying with Rebecca. She’s great, breakfast was great, the bed was great, great all around!

  • Becky is a wonderful host. Great response time. Nice and clean amenities. Fresh homemade breakfast at the time of our request. Highly recommended.

    Janelle2019-10-13T00:00:00Z
  • This charming, warm, and homey house in a quaint town was easy to get into, with clear directions. She'd left me notes so I didn't have any questions. The bed was wonderfully comfortable, the decor gently whimsical.. Rebecca served me a delicious egg bake, fruit, and fancy coffee for breakfast. Most importantly, I had a flat tire while there and she knew just who to call to come change it. (Some of the "rescue" dispatchers I called didn't even know where this town was.) She was very kind and helpful. Would recommend her and her place without reservation!

    Heidi2019-10-12T00:00:00Z
  • Great quaint place to stay! Loved the old house! Cozy & felt like home! (As we age, the stairs could be a challenge for us, but we did well! Lots of things to do in the area! Plan ahead!

    Marcia2019-10-04T00:00:00Z
  • A lovely bed and breakfast in a historic home. Fresh fruits and a delicious hot breakfast dish was served daily. Rooms are on the second floor. The suite has a spacious bathroom just off the hall. The bathroom has a heated tile floor, shower and updated claw foot tub. Beautiful woodwork and wood floors throughout the house. Rebecca was often at home or available by phone. Rebecca is very knowledgeable about the area and it’s history.

Welcome to Trout River Log Cabin, a rustic 19th century Norwegian-built log house nestled in the rolling hills of Northeast Iowa, just seven miles from downtown Decorah, or three from TG Brewing. The cabin is open seasonally from April to October. Our family farm with its many acres of perennial grass fields, timber, and meandering Trout River is absolutely gorgeous. And while you're at it be sure to check out our other overnight stay, Decorah House, located five blocks from downtown Decorah.
The cabin is really special. The walls are rich and textured and the colors are deep and vibrant. Pretty much everything you see, from the beadboard ceilings to the wood floors, were reclaimed from 19th century Norwegian-American log buildings. The cabin is really small and compact and measures just 17'x18'. But it has a functional kitchen, a really nice tiled shower, a mini split heat pump for AC and heating, and a gorgeous view of the Trout River valley. The cabin was built originally in the 1850s as a Norwegian-Lutheran parochial school. Built of old growth oak, walnut, and elm trees, the house feels rich and textured, the product of a different era. In 1898 it was disassembled, moved across a field, and rebuilt as a house by Norwegian immigrant Peter Losen. It remained lived in until the late 1970s and fell into disrepair. In 2007 we disassembled the house, moved it to its present site, and spent three years lovingly restoring it. We warmly welcome you. The cabin comfortably sleeps two. Upstairs is a comfy yet firm queen size bed. Linens and blankets are provided. There is a pullout twin sized bed that can accommodate a third person. The pullout bed is in the same space as the queen bed. Please note the steps to the upstairs are curvy and steep. Take care! On the main level you'll find a small yet totally functional kitchen stocked with all the kitchen supplies you'll need. We also supply fair trade and organic Kickapoo coffee and teas. Also on the main level you'll find comfy arm chairs, a kitchen table, a bookshelf of interesting books, board games, photo albums of the log cabin restoration and information of the surrounding area. The bathroom is on the main floor and the shower is upstairs in the bedroom. Both the bathroom and shower are stocked with organic soaps, shampoo and conditioner. Towels and wash cloths are provided.
Our farm sits seven miles from downtown Decorah. It's a twelve minute drive into town. And we're only three miles from Toppling Goliath. You can bike the gravels there in less than 15 minutes! Our farm sits on the end of a 1/2 mile gravel driveway on the edge of a bluff overlooking Trout River valley. There's a secondary highway about two miles away on the bottom of the valley floor. But other than that it's super private and quiet. The cabin sits about 50 yards from the big house, but is separated by a big windbreak of hundred year old Norwegian spruce.
  • It was perfect for a weekend getaway. Very relaxing and peaceful. We had deer wondering by each morning.

    Curtis2019-11-10T00:00:00Z
  • The cabin was great! Beautiful location! Hike down to the Trout River it is worth it!

    James2019-10-27T00:00:00Z
  • Another amazing stay at Trout River Log Cabin. Paul is an exceptional and talented individual with a big heart and amazing hospitality. The cabin is so wonderful and relaxing, and any questions you might have Paul answers straight away. The craftmanship and care that have been put into this cabin are so clear in every detail. Heaven!

  • Serene, simple and cozy abode. Perfect place to unwind and relax. Plenty to see and do nearby from hiking to fishing to shopping and more. Really enjoyed getting to know the history of the area at the Vesterheim museum and tour in Decorah. Saw not only the Belted Galloway cows but lots of deer, two bald eagles, heard a barred owl. It was hard to leave. Look forward to visiting the Driftless area again!

    Kim2019-10-14T00:00:00Z
  • Our stay at the cabin was perfect! We loved the exterior and interior! Very cozy! It was the perfect location between the downtown and Toppling and Goliath. We loved the gorgeous farm land and surrounding areas. We would definitely recommend this adorable cabin!

    Lauren2019-09-29T00:00:00Z
  • The cabin is beautiful & peaceful. We really enjoyed our relaxing evenings on the porch.

    Travis2019-09-15T00:00:00Z
  • The cabin was gorgeous and we enjoyed our stay. Walking to the river to fly fish was great and there are a lot of trout! It is about a 15 minute walk and the walk back is all up hill, good exercise and through the woods which provides nice shade during this hike. I am extremely picky about the cleanliness of places where I stay and this one was perfectly clean. Our stay was very private and the proximity to town is great, yet you still feel like you’re far away from anywhere. We will be returning again.

    Drew2019-09-03T00:00:00Z
  • This restored cabin overlooks a beautiful pasture and woodland with great views. Nice hike to Trout River and some great fishing spots. Beautifully appointed and cozy cabin. Exceptionally clean. Quiet and peaceful.

Private cabin located next to our home. 480 sq ft downstairs with 90 sq ft loft. West Union is the gateway to the rolling hills and scenic bluffs of Northeast Iowa. Two parks nearby (Dutton's Cave, Echo Valley) for hiking. The majestic bluffs of Pike's Peak and Effigy Mounds are 40 minutes east. Decorah, with its 14 mi bike trail and beautiful Falls are 30 minutes north. The cabin is quaint and cozy, perfect for a couple's getaway. It has the Cabin feel within the city's limits .
The stairs to the loft are steep and the ceiling height in the loft is 5'4". We recommend that if you are a tall person or weigh above 200 lbs, you may want to sleep on the Queen size couch sofa sleeper.
West Union has a beautiful town square with a great coffee shop. The town has one of the nicest city parks you'll find. Dutton's Cave and Echo Valley Park are minutes away that offer great hiking and amazing photo ops.

  • Definitely recommend going to this log cabin! It is such a cute cozy area that is well decorated by the hosts! The hosts themselves are also even better! They make you feel very welcomed!

    Allie2020-02-16T00:00:00Z
  • Our only regret is that we only booked it for one night and that we had to leave so soon! It felt like home. It was the best Valentine's day that we have had in our 20 years together. Echo Valley State park and Volga lake are beautiful places to hike!

  • Private, Peaceful and Convenient. Dan is very accommodating and the cabin is exactly what is advertised. If your looking to get away and clear the digital cobwebs, I would highly recommend this place.

  • Great place to stay. Cabin was perfect for our 4 night stay. Cabin was perfectly decorated for Christmas so we felt right at home. It was conveniently located and parking right at the door of the cabin was great. The cozy atmosphere was perfect and all the extras made it an easy stay. Thanks again.

I've shut the water off for the season. It'll be back on in the spring. I am still accepting reservations. Step back in time a bit and take it a little off the beaten path. The Tack Shed is a 12'x14' getaway constructed almost entirely from reclaimed or homesawn materials.
This is a rustic throw back bunkhouse style shed. There's no A/C but the windows open, have screens, and there's a fan. There's a shower and sink in the shed but to use the toilet you'll have to come in through the side entrance of my house to access the half bath. Don't expect the Ritz. There's gonna be dust, maybe a fly or two, and the climb to the loft is steep. But if you are looking for a one of a kind place to rest your head and get away from everything.... You just found it!
I'm pretty much off the beaten path here. You can sit outside on a clear night and see every star in the sky. My neighbors are a ways off and no yard lights are visible. You're basically surrounded by pasture ground.
  • Charming cabin, friendly and helpful host, warm in winter, comfortable bed.

    Edward2020-03-01T00:00:00Z
  • The place was the perfect getaway for my partner I! The lack of running water and wifi made it impossible to do work which was the goal of our little vacation. Great proximity to ice climbing in Wyalusing State Park and Lone Rock!

    Tiffany2020-02-22T00:00:00Z
  • My boyfriend and I had a great stay at the tack shed. Josh was a great host and had a nice fire going so the cabin was toasty when we arrived. Its such a cozy place with beautiful views. We loved the horses. We definitely plan on going back again.

    Jo2019-11-10T00:00:00Z
  • We really enjoyed our stay at the Tack Shed. It was a nice get-away from the city life. Josh was great with communication and making us feel welcomed.

    Destiny2019-11-03T00:00:00Z
  • Really fun! Cowboy coffee made on a hot plate is delicious! But it's not instantaneous. Bring your own coffee if you aren't a Maxwell House lover.  The wood burning stove is incredibly efficient and fun to use!  There is a space heater as well so the shed was perfect for our late arrival.  Bring some shoes that will tolerate short walks across dewy grass to the bathroom.   There is a hint of highway noise in the mornings, after the leaves have fallen.   Maggie’s Diner is just a couple of minutes away, but breakfast was only medium quality.  TMI!  We really loved staying here!!!

    Dina2019-10-27T00:00:00Z
  • The Tack Shed is the best! For any couples considering staying here, it’s *romantic* thanks to the excellent decor, great lighting, wood stove, and overall comfiness. Josh even left a bottle of wine for us, and we got to feed his horse apples!!

    Katie2019-10-20T00:00:00Z
  • We absolutely loved our stay! It was the perfect excuse to unwind in the countryside. We made the cabin a no phone zone and enjoyed playing cards and chatting by the fireplace. The location is great, near several parks for hiking and nature trails. If you want a one of a kind experience, this is the perfect place!

    Jennifer2019-10-13T00:00:00Z
  • This is a wonderful place to stay and Josh is a very inviting, informative host. Don’t let cold weather deter you— this charming space has a wood burning stove that is sure to keep you nice and toasty. The Shed is a rustic, and restful stop when you just want to get away from it all.

Roomy space, well kept and perfect as your home base for trout fishing, mushroom hunting, deer hunting, kayaking the Volga or any other activity this beautiful part of the state has to offer. Located on 28 acres with the Volga river running through the property it is serene. HUNTERS this is an ideal location for a home base as well as hunting on site. In late April and early May the mushrooms are everywhere up here!
Attached garage. Originally this property was a turkey farm. It is referred to by old timers as "turkey town". That's what the long sheds are on the property.
Go to Wadena for a Barney Burger, Elkader for a 2 mit burger and a pastry from Pedrettis.
  • Beautiful well kept home. Chris and Kathleen are superb hosts and keep the place spick and span for all visitors. It is very spacious, has a good sized table for sharing a meal or games, and a well furnished kitchen for ease of cooking. Added bonus that their garage is for guest use, so I didn't have to scrape frost off of my car. This home is not the most accessible for those with mobility issues; all entrances to the house are up a set of stairs, however then all amenities are on the same level.

  • The cabin is a great place to get away from it all. Many things to do at the property like fishing, relaxing, watching the wildlife, star gazing, campfires and kayaking. The property is close to other activities as well. About 10 miles to the Volga River Recreational Area, 2 miles from Wadena where you can grab a bite to eat or take a drive and discover downtown Elkader. Andy is a great host and is very helpful when you have questions or need recommendations about the local area. We hope to return soon!

  • Andys A frame cabin overlooks his private pond that is actually well maintained and only getting better with each improvement Andy puts in place. The cabin is brand new with all amnesties needed for a weekend of disconnecting. The wrap around deck has a hammock, rocking chairs, picnic tables and a birds eye view of a little bit of Mother Nature. The fishing is great and there are kayaks to explore the water a little bit more. Overall.... I would recommend this space to others and I would rent again given the opportunity! Thanks again for the hospitality Andy!

  • A beautiful cabin in a secluded location! Andy was a gracious host who provided privacy and yet responded promptly to any questions. The cabin was sparkling clean and very comfortable with just a short ride to town. The wrap around porch is a delightful place to pass the time. Definitely a getaway!

Professionally refurbished in 2009, Acorn Cabin offers a stay in the country with the feeling of history and the comfort of restoration. The Cabin features a lovely 2nd floor bedroom with vaulted ceilings, a cozy sitting area, full kitchen and bathroom with shower. Relax on the Amish built front porch with a view of the pastures. Acorn Cabin is one of the last farms on the edge of the south side of town. The setting is peaceful and gorgeous, with lovely out buildings, a stately farmhouse, and beautiful oak trees. You can expect privacy and quiet at Acorn Cabin, with only the workings of the farm and the sheep to keep you company. We live in the restored farmhouse, and after raising our three children here now enjoy the peacefulness of the farm. We are just a short walk away - far enough to give you plenty of privacy, but close enough for easy conversation and assistance with anything you might need.
  • Acorn Cabin is a special place. I went with my adult daughter and relaxed a lot. Also enjoyed Decorah IA, a quaint town with many amenities. Our high light was getting to feed the sheep with Mike and his grandson. The cabin is comfortable and well decorated. We plan to go again!

The location is very close to town but you definitely feel like you are in the country. My granddaughter had a wonderful time with the sheep and Fluffy, the cat. Thank you for everything, Kim! • Acorn Cabin is a wonderful place to stay. The cabin is perfectly located. My husband and I bliked on the Trout River trail which is just a block from the cabin. Mike and Kim are great hosts!

    Paula2019-10-16T00:00:00Z
  • We enjoyed a peaceful weekend at Acorn Cabin. The cabin is clean, comfortable, and well outfitted with all the basics we needed and special touches like welcome snacks, fleece bathrobes, throws, and rugs that made for a cozy time on a cold weekend. It was also fun to watch the sheep from the front porch!

    Linda2019-10-13T00:00:00Z
  • We absolutely loved our stay at the Acorn cabin. The location was perfect, quiet and restful but so close to town and the bike path. The thoughtful touches like candies at the bedside, fresh flowers everywhere and blankets on the porch for chilly evenings were sweet and everything was super clean. We enjoyed watching the sheep and the sunset. Kim was very responsive and knowledgeable to any questions we asked about the area and activities.

  • This home is a real treasure! It is spotlessly clean and welcomes you with a warm cozy feeling from the moment you walk in the door. We arrived to find lights on, the fireplace going and a wonderful homemade coffee cake waiting for us. Tom and Julie are obviously hospitality minded. All communication from them was quick and thorough. Check-in and check-out were simple and all of the house instructions were neatly presented and easy to understand. Located up on a lovely hill and nestled in among the trees, this is a great place to relax and refresh. We will be back!

  • Love the charm of this location. The beautiful work on the inside is hiding behind the facade of some old farm buildings. The inside of both buildings were perfect for the family gathering spot. Everything you needed was right there. Sleeping situation worked for us. We loved it. The cows woke us up. The farm fresh air greeted us. It is what I would want for this kind of trip.

    Jack2019-09-15T00:00:00Z
  • Great for kids, there was an air hockey and a foosball table! Cute kitchenette area with ice cream and pizza available for purchase. Our kids also loved feeding the cows and checking out the pigs. Mike was a wonderful host too, I would highly recommend staying here!

  • Northeast Iowa Farm Cottages is a “have to experience “ for every family or farmer at heart! Our 2 year old grand daughters first words every morning were “I have to wake up the cows and piggies”. Living on a working farm was awesome! Mike and Karin were perfect hosts. They thought of everything from a fly swatter to bedtime snacks. The beds - even the bunk beds- were comfortable. It was a big plus that Mike had a pack n play and changing pad for us so we didn’t have to travel with one. Finally, the malt machine was a special added touch we really enjoyed. Thanks Mike and Karin for making our trip so comfortable and unforgettable.

  • Masons listing gives you the feel of being at a ski resort!! You will NOT be disappointed! The home is MUCH MORE SPACIOUS than the photos suggest. The pictures don’t highlight it, but there are two separate bedding areas. The listing is located on a dead end street- and surrounded by other residences- and completely safe. In EVERY room, Mason provides numerous “homely” touches that speak volumes of his thoughts on hospitality! His communication is superb and he responds expeditiously to questions. I had a situation of flight rescheduling and he went beyond expectations to assist me. I travel to Iowa from TEXAS regularly and will definitely be using his lodge again!

You will have the entire shed house to yourself. Located in Waukon, IA but with a country feel and breathtaking views! Located 20 miles from Decorah, 15 miles from Lansing, 17 miles from Yellow River State Forest, 21 miles to Effigy Mounds National Monument, and close to public hunting and fishing land.
You are renting a shed-house that is located right next to our home. We live on the property. You will have a private entrance and plenty of paved parking. The space has a full kitchen with everything you could want. Full bathroom has a large walk-in tile shower. One bedroom with a queen bed. Common space is a large open sport court area for the kids to run around (we use as a basketball court) with one sofa, a futon sofa, two single cots, and a queen blow up mattress if you need it.
  • It's amazing! Truly amazing! Everyone had fun using the basketball court. Not only did we use it for basketball, we played bags, badminton, jenga, another toss game we brought, a parachute ball thing for the little kids that we brought and just letting the kids run around and blow off some energy! The place was sparkling clean too. Kitchen was beautiful and stocked with all our cooking needs. The kitchen/dining area that overlooks the basketball court was super nice too. We loved all the barstools to sit and enjoy view of the court and the country hillside. We also had a paper airplane contest there too. Let's just say, we were not bored staying there! We will stay again!

There are four guest rooms, all with private bathrooms. The Northeast Iowa local area boasts numerous attractions: breweries, vineyards, waterfall parks, art tours, canoeing, tubing, kayaking, biking trails, hiking, museums, restaurants, antiques, unique shopping and historic churches and cemeteries.
  • The hospitality was amazing and the breakfast was amazing.

    Jeanine2019-09-08T00:00:00Z
  • Loved our stay! Amazingly renovated building with lovely, large, clean rooms. Common spaces inside and out are beautiful and very inviting. Highlight for us was a wonderful breakfast with great company from both hosts and fellow guests. Really a wonderful communal experience.

  • It's hard to believe Barb has only been in business since July 2018: everything is top notch, cozy and comfortable! Lavender Fields is a tremendous addition to the accommodations near Luther College. We will be back!

    Darcy2018-12-02T00:00:00Z
  • Very unique and completely remodeled with the original rustic style intact. The host was very kind and hospitable. Every bedroom has a newly added bathroom, the dining room is amazing.

    Mohamad2018-10-28T00:00:00Z
  • What a beautiful home and wonderful host! Barb was so gracious and welcoming and within 15 minutes we felt like we'd known her forever! She made us feel so comfortable and the accommodations were perfect. From the beautiful room with our private bath, to the comfy bed, and plush towels, to the warm and inviting fireplace we were encouraged to use, to the amazing breakfast Barb fixed in the morning, it was a fun and memorable stay. Barb and Jeff's home is like something from HGTV, with lovely antiques, fun farmhouse décor and beautiful hardwood floors. And spotless! If I could give a 10 star rating I would indeed. We are already looking forward to a return visit!

    Karen2018-10-21T00:00:00Z
  • Lavender Fields is a well-appointed full B&B versus just a room in someone's house. Well appointed, immaculate house inside and out. It was great to come down for coffee in the morning and chat with the host and other guests, with a full breakfast available for those that wanted one. Great hosts in a great house - we'll be back!

  • Very clean and friendly hosts! When my fiancé and I decided to get married in Lansing, we weren’t sure where our families would stay. Harpers Haven was a blessing! Thank you Danielle and Heath!

    Dana2019-09-15T00:00:00Z
  • Danielle’s place was amazing. Super relaxing and spacious for my family and I. Will definitely be visiting again soon!

    Choua2019-09-01T00:00:00Z
  • A great retreat in the bluffs! The house was very home-y and welcoming. Everything was very clean and well kept. Many of the basics were also available (kitchen, bathroom). There were also many kids amenities including books, toys, silverware, and bath toys. With the heat we didn't use the deck, but it had a great set up! Definitely recommend!!

    Danielle2019-07-21T00:00:00Z
  • Lansing is only 8 miles away! It's a small town but a lot to do and see!

    Kim2019-07-07T00:00:00Z
  • Danielle and Heath’s home is even nicer than what you see in the pictures. It was sparkling clean, and has very cute decor and comfortable furniture. The kitchen was well equipped for cooking family meals and the deck barbecue is in excellent condition. There is a new Keurig coffee maker that was so nice for enjoying morning coffee on the deck. Communication with Danielle and Heath was excellent and they checked in with us to make sure we had everything we needed during our 5 day stay. The location was perfect for visiting our daughter-in-laws’ family who are dairy farmers in the Lansing area. We rented bikes in Decorah one day - highly recommend Toppling Giant Brewery for after ride refreshments! It is also close to other great places we would recommend including Effigy Mounds, the Driftless Center and Prairie du Chien. All in all a wonderful experience- hope to stay again the next time we are in Iowa.

  • Becky was a wonderful hostess. The house is charming, clean and very comfortable. The bed was very cozy and I loved the clawfoot tub in the bathroom. Breakfast was delicious. There were lots of little touches around the house to make me feel right at home. I'll definitely stay here again if I am ever in the area.

  • Big house, country setting, great for a large group. We enjoyed the fire pit! The host was very helpful and communicative.

    Heather2019-10-20T00:00:00Z
  • Roger's farmhouse was great for our gathering of friends! We wish we had been there longer to enjoy all of it. Unfortunately, rain and a brisk wind kept us from the fire pit. This rambling, home has been remodeled at least a few times which makes for a home with lots of interesting and comfortable places to gather. Roger was super friendly and very quick to help when we had some small needs. The kitchen has basic pots and pans and utensils but we had to be creative without a strainer for pasta and ended up having to buy a decent knife for cutting meat and veggies (which we took) and wine glasses (which we left). Overall, a great place to stay!
