Your guide to Marblehead
All About Marblehead
Marblehead, Ohio is a small village on the rocky southern coast of Lake Erie where you can enjoy rural, midwestern beauty in the form of gorgeous lakeside views and nature preserves. The East Harbor State Park Beach and the Mazurik Access offer 2.5 miles of lakeside terrain, with amenities including boat rentals, barbeques, and picnic areas, and a free golf course.
Spend a warm summer day among the wildflowers at Lakeside Daisy Preserve, or engage in birdwatching in the Great Egret Marsh Preserve, which also hosts a 1.2-mile loop ideal for hiking, kayaking, and canoeing, just a 10-minute drive down south at the Dempsey Wildlife Area. After a day of exploring, you can make a stop at the village’s restaurants offering freshly caught seafood. Or sample some of Lake Erie’s renowned cabernet sauvignon, locally produced on nearby Isle St. George.
The best time to stay in a vacation rental in Marblehead
Due to its location on the shores of Lake Erie, summer and fall are when Marblehead is in its prime. Summer events kickoff in June with the Marblehead Music Fest, a free outdoor concert series. In August, you can celebrate the town’s Eastern European culture at the annual Halupki Festival, featuring traditional Carpatho-Russian food, such as cabbage rolls, and live polka music. As the weather starts to get a little chillier, the Annual Classic Car Show takes place, as well as the Lakeside-Marblehead Lighthouse Festival, where you can enjoy hayrides or take part in a pie auction. Even though the temperatures drop significantly in the winter, you can enjoy the town with some snowmobiling, ice skating, and cross-country skiing in one of Marblehead’s many parks.
Top things to do in Marblehead
Marblehead Lighthouse and Keeper’s House Museum
The first lighthouse on the Great Lakes to have a female Keeper, Marblehead Lighthouse is also said to be one of the oldest continually-running lighthouses in the United States. Since 1822 this lighthouse has guided the way for many sailors over the years and can be toured daily. Alongside the lighthouse is the Keeper’s House Museum, which offers information on the history of the lighthouse and the surrounding Lighthouse State Park.
Cedar Point Amusement Park
A 30-minute car ride south over the Sandusky Bay will land you at what is said to be the second-oldest, still-operating amusement park in the United States. Since its opening in 1870, the park is now home to 70 rides and 18 roller coasters that attract visitors year-round.
Put-in-Bay
Take a short 20-minute ferry ride from Marblehead to South Bass Island. Once you’re there, you can discover the historical significance of Put-in-Bay at the Perry's Victory and International Peace Memorial, which commemorates the victorious naval battle against British forces during the War of 1812, named after the commodore himself who led the American forces to victory.
