This town in the hills of central Washington was once a thriving logging village. Known for its famous Christmas lights ceremonies and German-style market, Leavenworth is undeniably magical at Christmas. It’s a perfect base for a multitude of snowy winter activities in the winter months, with ski events and the Bavarian Ice Festival featuring ice and snow sculpture contests. As spring arrives, blankets of wildflowers cover the mountainsides and temperatures start to rise, making it a fantastic time for hiking and mountain biking. The highlight of May is Maifest, an authentic Bavarian Festival with Bavarian and Maibaum dancing, music, and a parade. Foodies will love June’s events, which include Bavarian Bike & Brew with a bike race, music and a beer garden, a wine walk, and the start of the summer farmers’ market. The fall brings colorful leaves, crisp air, and events like a wine walk, salmon festival, and the famed Oktoberfest.

Lake Chelan

This beautiful lake is about one and a half hours away by car from Leavenworth and is often described as Washington State’s Lake Tahoe. When not basking in the array of German-themed activities, the slither of land that is Lake Chelan makes for the perfect trip into nature. Keep in mind that some parts of the land surrounding the lake are protected, but you can still enjoy all your favorite summer time recreational activities like fishing or sipping on some of the flavorful syrahs and merlots this wine country has to offer. As an added bonus, you can even venture out via boat to Stehekin, a beautiful little town inaccessible by road that’s nestled in the hills on the edge of the lake.

Enchantment Park

Slow walkers, fast joggers or skateboarders alike can find the perfect trail to spend time on in Enchantment Park. The trees outlining the park offer shade from the blazing sun and promise to deliver only the freshest, cleanest air for your lungs. Bringing children along or have feet that tire quickly? Playgrounds and rest stops are scattered along the way and are the best spots to take a break and really let the beautiful surroundings sink in.

Visit the Greater Leavenworth Museum to learn more about the community’s unique history. The museum offers educational information and walking tours to preserve the rich heritage of the people and events that have helped to shape Leavenworth and the Upper Valley. The museum recently moved into town and is now located above the Nutcracker museum, with its amazing collection of hundreds of nutcrackers from around the world.
