Kenmerkend is het ‘smûke’ coulisselandschap met duizenden kilometers elzensingels, dykswâlen (houtwallen) en honderden pingo’s en poelen. Het gebied heeft unieke flora en fauna. De biodiversiteit is hier groot. Op korte afstand van Groningen, Leeuwarden, Dokkum en de ydillische Waddeneilanden. De omgeving is zeer geschikt voor wandelen, fietsen, varen.
