Spianada is the central square of Corfu and a meeting place for its residents and visitors, it is enclosed by Iroon Street of Polytechnic fighters in the east and north, Eleftherias and Kapodistriou Street in the west and Akadimias Street in the south, it is crossed vertically by D. It was built in the style of the Royal Gardens of Europe and is the largest square in the Balkans and one of the largest in Europe. Symphony orchestral concerts and many other events take place in the kiosk of the square, mainly during the summer. Cricket matches are also very common, cricket is a purely British sport adopted by the Corfiots since the period of English rule on the island. The square is located right next to the always crowded pedestrian street of Liston with its French architecture buildings and many cafes.

Between the Old Town and the old fortress is the esplanade, a long green square that is a remnant of the Venetian fortifications in the 17th century. During the French occupation of Corfu at the turn of the 19th century the esplanade was planted with trees, while the cricket pitch is a holdover from the British period that followed. Also dating to that time is the Maitland Monument, a Neoclassical peristyle, with 20 Ionic columns around a rotunda, commemorating the Lord High Commissioner Thomas Maitland. The Liston, on the Esplanade’s western boundary is an elegant arcade, also from the French period and designed in the style of the Rue de Rivoli in Paris. Great for having a coffee while you stroll around town
