The easternmost point of the boot, the city of the Martyrs, a jewel of Salento, a bridge between the West and the East, a territory full of Caribbean beaches, a place rich in history, art and culture. Otranto is all this and even more. A town of 5,600 inhabitants that in the summer sees its population multiplied by the beauty of the places, by the uniqueness of the sea and by the importance it holds within the economy and tourism of Salento. The name derives from the word Hydruntum, which indicates a small river that crosses the Idro valley, although some schools of thought believe that it can derive from the name used to indicate a hill that stood near the port area, called Odronto . The municipality also includes numerous hamlets, some of which are also popular tourist destinations, such as Porto Badisco, Fontanelle, Serra Alimini, Frassanito, Conca Specchiulla.
