It is the second largest underground cistern in Istanbul (after the Basilica Cistern) but the oldest one, built by Constantine the Great who founded (Constantinople) in 330 AD with 212 columns.

After seeing the Basilica Cistern pay a visit to the Cistern of Philoxenos. Slightly smaller but deeper than the Basilica Cistern, it hosts weddings and events.

The Cistern of Philoxenos, is a man-made subterranean reservoir in Istanbul, situated between the Forum of Constantine and the Hippodrome of Constantinople in the Sultanahmet dsitrict.

The cistern was constructed under a palace, often identified as the Palace of Antiochos in the 5th. The cistern was restored by Justinian I,after the palace was completely destroyed in a fire in 475.
