A must see if you’re visiting in June, but equally gorgeous any time of year. This is within a USFS fee area ($3/car). Short and easy trails. Several stunning overlooks. Top of mountain is in a rare high elevation alpine forest with fragrant evergreens.

The rhododendrons only bloom once a year. If you want to see them at full bloom visit mid-June. Check ahead with the Roan Mountain State Park as bloom time can vary and can be affected by heavy rains.

Roan Mountain is the home to the largest naturally growing rhododendron garden in the world? Can you imagine 600 acres of blooming rhododendron? It’s breathtaking and it’s a definite must see!
