Why locals recommend it
Located east of Havana, Playa Mar Azul is a lovely and cosmopolitan beach. Youāll find all kinds of sports here: beach volleyball, sailing, kite surfing, and many other watersports. As the sun sets, live bands often set up to play live music on the beach. The beach is least crowded Monday through Friday; weekends are very crowded, but it calms down after 5pm, which is a good time to check out the sunset. There are almost always vendors walking around selling fresh coconut water.
Tips from locals
One of the most beautiful beaches in the country, like the beaches of Varadero, and only 30 minutes by bus from the city center.
Santa MarĆa beach with 8 kilometers of good quality sand, Santa MarĆa del Mar is the longest beach of the north littoral of Havana. Opposed to other beaches in Cuba where one can only find tourists, Playa Santa Maria del Mar is very popular among the habaneros, who can frequently enjoy these warm waters thanks to their closeness to the city.
Cubaās proximity to the equator means that itās always beach season in Havana. The islandās entire coastline is pretty much a white sand, turquoise-watered dream, so itās hard to go wrong with picking a beach. If youāre looking for a party atmosphere, head to Santa MarĆa del Mar, the biggest and most well-known beach in Havana. The downside to this one, though, is the crowds. But if youāre visiting in the autumn or winter you should be ok. If youāre looking for a quieter beach day that isnāt as popular with tourists, try Playa Boca Ciega. Or even better, Playa Jibacoa (my favorite beach in Cuba).
