In 1906, the Army Corps of Engineers placed giant rocks on both sides of the Mattituck Inlet. Over the decades, tidal transport has created a large, wonderful beach on the west side of the jetty at Breakwater on the Long Island Sound. During the summer season, the beach has lifeguards on duty, as well as restrooms and an outdoor shower. A beach wheelchair is available for disabled patrons. There is a small assortment of playground attractions for children. The "rocks" are popular with fishers. Breakwater Beach has a pavilion with picnic tables and is also the home to the MPD's volleyball courts. The beach is popular all year round with residents and guests who come to watch the stunning, unforgettable, and ever-changing sunsets.
