Why locals recommend it
Paul Schimmel, the former chief curator of MOCA, oversees this giant 100,000 square foot space. You think of galleries as being stuffy, but this one is very inviting. They show high-end art but in a low-key way. I saw a mom playing with her baby just on the floor next to these amazing paintings; I find that kind of atmosphere makes the art more accessible. They have a restaurant with a chef who used to work at Soho House, in Venice Beach, and they’re using a garden off the courtyard to grow their own vegetables. You’ll see a chicken coop there, too, for fresh eggs.
Tips from locals
Located in the downtown arts district, a great starting place for the entire neighborhood. Their restaurant Manuela is very good too.
by far, my favorite Gallery in Los Angeles. Located in the arts district in DTLA.
A cutting edge take on the arts scene and a definite must-visit. This gallery is a sprawling complex of viewing opportunities and is associated with a restaurant, outdoor garden, and one of the best art bookshops in Los Angeles.
