Places to stay in Kilcoo
Cara Cottage is located on the outskirts of the village of Kilcoo in the heart of Mourne. In an idyllic quiet setting, there are breath-taking views and easy access to walking and biking trails nearby. A cosy one-bedroom detached cottage, sleeping 2 adults + 2 children or 4 adults, this is a perfect rural retreat for relaxation or a base to explore everything the local area has to offer. https://www.theguardian.com/travel/2019/oct/07/mourne-mountains-northern-ireland-adventure-holiday-hiking-k
We’re ideally located for access to the many outdoor activities the Mournes have to offer. Within ten minutes of the cottage you’ll find Game of Thrones filming location Tollymore Forest, the buzzing seaside town of Newcastle, home of Royal County Down Golf Course and Slieve Donard, the highest mountain in Ulster. Cara Cottage has a modern open plan kitchen, dining and living space. The fully equipped kitchen includes lots of storage and surface space, a fridge, oven/hob, microwave, toaster, and kettle. The dining table seats 4, and in the living room along with TV/DVD the multi-fuel stove is ideal for sitting by the fire in the evening. So you don’t have to worry, fuel for the fire is provided for you- enjoy! The living room has a sofa bed which would suit 2 adults/children, and the bedroom has a double bed. A travel cot is available if needed, as well as a high chair/booster seat. The bathroom has a full suite, including bath and separate electric shower and a hairdryer is provided. For laundry, there’s a utility space with storage, access to a clothes horse or outside line for drying and an iron and ironing board. Cara Cottage is situated to the side/rear of our family home, so there’s ample parking at the front, and lots of space on the lawn to the side for a picnic on the grass or for children to safely play outside. The easiest way to get around is by car, but buses run through Kilcoo village connecting us with Newry City, Castlewellan, Newcastle and onwards to Belfast. Kilcoo village is 5 minutes walk from Cara Cottage and has a mini supermarket, a food take-away, petrol station, and church. There are two local pubs which both serve food. Nearby Castlewellan Castle, Lake, Forest Park, Arboretum and bike trail are definitely worth a visit, and don’t miss the Peace Maze, one of the world's largest permanent hedge mazes. If you’re planning on exploring further afield, Downpatrick (burial place of Saint Patrick) is 20 minutes drive, Newry City is 25 minutes away, and Dublin is an hour down the motorway from there. Heading North, Belfast is 50 minutes by car from Cara Cottage. Closer to home, if you’re discovering or revisiting the Mourne Mountains, we personally recommend the stunning Brandy Pad, Hares Gap and Trassey Track. Venture further and take in Spelga Dam and neighbouring Hilltown, only 10 minutes drive from Kilcoo. Onwards towards the beautiful coastal town of Rostrevor and Kilbroney Forest Park for more stunning scenery. We would suggest following the coast road, taking in Greencastle’s 13th Century Norman Castle, Cranfield’s beautiful sandy beach and Kilkeel Harbour. Continue along the coast through Ballymartin, Annalong and back to Newcastle for a bite to eat before heading home to Cara Cottage. There are plenty of fantastic food options for you, such as Kilcoo’s own Greenan’s Steakhouse, as well as Maginns Bar & Restaurant in Castlewellan, and Villa Vinci, Vanilla, Great Jones’, and Brunel’s in Newcastle. Be sure to sample some famous Mourne seafood during your stay in Dundrum’s Mourne Seafood Bar too.
This is a rural location and a close knit community, with lots to do in the surrounding area. https://www.theguardian.com/travel/2019/oct/07/mourne-mountains-northern-ireland-adventure-holiday-hiking-kayaking-cycling?CMP=Share_AndroidApp_WhatsApp
  • In addition to all the great comments, it's the little things that make a world of difference.

  • Mary and her family are lovely. Always offered to drive us when was raining. The location is great, bus station just down the hill. The cottage was clean and stylish and they had even a welcome pack. Really nice experience.

  • Lovely stay again! Thank you Mary

  • This was the perfect place to stay for a quiet weekend away. The cottage is so cosy and quaint and my kids loved being next door to the sheep :) Such a peaceful place with only the sound of bleating when you open the door. The hosts were so warm and welcoming and couldn’t do enough for us. The welcome pack was a lovely surprise and having the fire lit for us too :) The cottage had everything we needed inside. We didn’t want to leave!

  • A wonderful place to stay and to get to know the landscape, Mary's cottage was very clean and nicely decorated, communication with the hosts was perfect. I can only recommend it. Many thanks.

    Thorsten2019-12-12T00:00:00Z
  • Absolutely spotless, toasty warm and plenty of space for a couple or small family. The views are truly unbelievable, views are constantly changing due to the clouds, and the loudest thing around the area is the occasional passing tractor bringing bales of hay to the fields. Blissful! This was our second visit to Cara Cottage which says it all, we had actually forgotten just how fresh the air is there! My partner was genuinely upset to be leaving. Thank you so much Mary, we will definitely be back as soon as possible :)

  • We really enjoyed our stay with Pauline. The house is perfect for four people. It is so cozy there and totally clean, bright and great furnishings. We really felt very comfortable. The direct view of the Morne Mountains is really fantastic ... You have everything you need there :) We would love to come back!

  • Lovely place to stay. Has an outdoor space where your dog is confined and safe. Pauline and Tony are very welcoming.

  • Pauline was a great host, very helpful and friendly. The accommodation was idea for us, plenty of space, clean and comfortable. We hope to visit again soon.

    Ryan2020-03-06T00:00:00Z
  • Pauline’s place has stunning views that seem to change every time you look. It’s beautiful. The accommodation perfectly suited our small family and Pauline made sure our baby had a travel cot to sleep in. We were blown away by the amount of provisions we found on arrival - not just eggs, bread, milk and coffee but all the shampoos, deodorants, hair gels and shower cream you could need. The beds were really comfortable. As for location- as well as having the Mourne Mountains on your back garden, the beautiful Murlough Beach and stunning Silent Valley are short drives away. We will definitely be back.

    Paddy2020-02-27T00:00:00Z

    Nigel2020-01-23T00:00:00Z
  • Our second time staying there and it was fantastic. Victoria was a great help to us to with a last-minute scheduling issue. We love it there...such a great spot being so close to everything but on a quiet street...and a beautiful view of the Mourne mountains to make it that much nicer!

    Kathleen2020-01-20T00:00:00Z
  • I was met by Victoria who is lovely and was very responsive in the lead up to my arrival. The property was immaculately clean with all the amenities one would want - kitchen, washing machine, good sized bedrooms and a a lovely open fire (which Victoria had going when I arrived). If you’d rather not mess about with lighting the fire, the heating in the house was great. A very warm and cosy space. The house is also very well located - only a few minutes walk from the town, including some lovely bars and restaurants, and of course, some beautiful walks. Highly recommend.

    Gabrielle2020-01-10T00:00:00Z
  • The house location is brilliant. Clean, furnished well. Will be enquiring again. Great stay. Right beside the slieve Donard hotel

Tollymore Gate Lodge, built in 1802 is tucked inside the Bryansford Gate of Tollymore Forest Park. Recently fully refurbished with a well equipped kitchen, comfortable parlour complete with wood burning stove, two spacious bedrooms with king size beds and open fires. Tollymore, previously the home of the Roden Family, lies amongst the northern foothills of the magnificent Mourne Mountains, long recognised as Northern Ireland’s best hillwalking destination.
The gate lodge has a sheltered garden with a sunny aspect which looks out onto the Mournes. Step out through the garden gate into more than 1,500 acres of magnificent parkland ideal for walkers of every ability. Alternatively, the park can be your starting point for exploring the Mournes. The Forest Park is one of the principle locations for the Game of Thrones HBO/SKY drama and GOT tour buses visit Tollymore daily. In strolling quietly through the wilder parts of the park you can encounter fallow deer, red squirrels, pine martens, magnificent red kites and birds of prey soaring overhead. Belfast author, CS Lewis, a frequent visitor to the park was so taken by its magic that he used it as a model for his “through the wardrobe” fantasy land of Narnia. His seven book collection, The Chronicles of Narnia has to date sold more than 100 million copies in 47 languages.
Bryansford is small quiet village 3miles/5km from the town of Newcastle where in the words of Percy Ffrench 'the Mountains of Mourne sweep to the sea'. Newcastle is home to the world renowned Royal County Down Golf Course with it's two outstanding links courses. The Championship Course will be hosting the 116th Women's Amateur Championship from 11-15 June 2019 and in July competitors in The Open scheduled to take place Royal Portrush Golf Club will practice at RCD prior to the competition in Portrush. Murlough Nature Reserve with its magnificent walks is 5 miles away. Stroll along the beach and return through the reserve to enjoy the flora, fauna and magnificent views of Slieve Donard and the Mourne Mountains. Ponies, cattle and rabbits can be seen grazing and if you're lucky you will hear (and possibly see) a cuckoo. Tollymore National Outdoor Centre is 1 mile from the gate lodge or a 15 min stroll through the park. Here you can enjoy the Hot Rock Climbing Wall or enrol in Mountaineering, Rock Climbing or Canoeing Courses. Outdoors Activity Training Courses are also available. Castlwellan Forest Park is 5 miles away. It is home to the world renowned Annesley Garden Arboretum and its 43( at the most recent count) Champion Trees including Northern Ireland's Tree of the Year 2018, the stunning multi stemmed Giant Redwood with it's amazing 19 trunks, a fabulous place for a walk anytime of year where you will always find something of interest to see. If you're lucky you will spot a red squirrel or two. Rumour has it there are quite a few reds in the Annesley Garden at present. Seaforde's Tropical Butterfly House is also well worth a visit. These are just samples of some of the fantastic things to do in our locality and what make it unique.
  • The most magical stay and perfect location to settle after a lovely walk in the woods. Angelas’ personal touches were some of the most thoughtful additions we’ve come across yet in an air b&b, we cannot wait to return to this little gem and our only regret was not staying longer.

    Danielle2020-03-15T00:00:00Z

    Lydia2020-03-08T00:00:00Z
  • Loved staying in this unique little pink gate lodge, amazing being able to have the dog with me. Really warm welcome. With a super sweet welcome basket, filled with very generous bits. Loved by all, extremely thoughtful. Fuel for the fire also was left to use which was greatly appreciated. The location is just wonderful, especially with it's own private gate into the forest itself. Super cozy with everything you need for a relaxing gate away. Thank you Angela for sharing your beautiful little pink gate lodge for us all to enjoy x

  • This is our family’s second time at the cottage and it never disappoints.... all the finishing touches are just lovely. We love it as the cottage seems worlds away from the everyday hustle.... light the fire.. grab a board game and let the memories happen. Can’t wait to get back down when the weather is good to enjoy the cottage garden..

    Jo2020-01-26T00:00:00Z
  • Tranquil surroundings and a great "feel" about the place.

    Jason2020-01-19T00:00:00Z
  • Location, location, location! This cottage is perfect for exploring Tollymore forest park with the dogs, having a gate leading straight into the park. Angela is a fab host, she makes your stay special with all the extra touches like fresh farm eggs, milk, yogurt, short bread (which is just melt in the mouth), plus lots more. The bed is really comfy and the shower is powerful. Having a wood burner is great too as we arrived in the middle of storm Brendan, once lit the cottage was super cosy, we didn't want to leave. We will definitely stay here again.

One of the only traditional Cottages in the area, built by the owner's family in the early 1800s. Ivy Cottage is set at the foot of the beautiful Mourne Mountains, overlooking the harbour in Newcastle. The cottage is fully equipped for a relaxing stay, welcoming guests including families and people with pets. Ivy cottage provides comfortable accommodation for at least four, with two double bedrooms and the optional use of a folding bed in the living room.
  • Lovely, peaceful location with great views.

    Lucy2020-03-08T00:00:00Z
  • What a wonderful stay, from the little personal touches like welcome pack and flowers were much appreciated to having everything catered for including dvd, games etc. I would highly recommend this place to anyone who loves walking, there are numerous scenic walks nearby like the granite trail which runs behind the property. The sea views are beautiful and it’s set in a lovely quiet neighbourhood. There is a path a short distance from the house to a couple of local pubs with great craic and local musicians. If you are looking for a warm and welcoming home from home place to stay I would highly recommend Ivy Cottage.

    Noelene2020-03-05T00:00:00Z

  • The place is spacious. There is a couch and tv in kitchen. All the things you would need in a home we’re available. Games and toys for kids. The outside space was great because the dogs were fenced in and safe. The bedrooms were perfect and nicely decorated. Another couch and two big cozy chairs in living room. The house was nice and warm.

  • Christine's cottage was a charming stay, with a bit of natural beauty surrounding the area! The place has everything one could ask for and then some. Not to mention the people of Newcastle were some of the nicest I had met on my journey through Ireland and Northern Ireland (which is saying something). A place I would definitely like to make arrangements for in the future when I'm back in this part of the world!

  • A lovely, colorful room in a artistic house! Everything was cozy, and having a microwave and water kettle was a help. A note to future travelers, just so you don’t make the mistake I made: there’s another home with the exact same address in Newcastle. Double check your satnav/GPS to make sure you’re heading to Castlewellan and not Newcastle.

  • Lada’s place was very clean and tidy. Facilities provided were all there, the little kitchen was a good touch. The shower room/ toilet and bedroom was massive. You have a lot of space to relax and it was a great stay for visiting the Mournes. After walking all day it was great to come back to a hot shower and hot tea. I definitely recommend for anyone wanting to visit around Newry. Lada definitely went the extra mile to make sure there was everything you need to feel at home :)

Unplug and unwind in our off-grid horsebox here at Lackan Cottage Farm, in the beautiful County Down countryside with great views of the Mourne Mountains. Tucked away in a private corner of our smallholding, this truck - once our home - has been lovingly refurbished with recycled and local materials. A cosy, comfy hideaway you won't want to leave. This is proper off grid life, so NO mains power, NO wifi and an OUTSIDE composting toilet, so not for everyone, but a real escape.
The truck has a well equipped kitchen, full size gas cooker and large dining area with plenty of storage, as well as a wood or gas heated shower. The cosy living room has a woodburning stove, and the box bed looks out of a large circular window with views of the fields and mountains beyond. Please note, in winter, the temperature outside can go as low as minus 9 degrees centrigrade. There are LED lights throughout, powered by solar panels - this is true off-grid living. Even the outdoor compost toilet - a few yards from the truck, had a great view. The truck has 12volt sockets for phone charging, but this is a proper off-grid getaway and you won't find wifi or mains electricity. There is also no fridge, but we provide a cool box which can be plugged into the truck, and ice packs can be changed daily.
We're situated in rural County Down, just a few miles from nearby forest parks, the amazing Mourne Mountains, and of course, the sea. Visitors can enjoy the tranquility of our own birch woods, and walk in the gardens. There are also a number of great local walks, one through the Lackan Bog Area of Special Scientific Interest where you will find the highest number of dragonfly species anywhere in Ireland.
  • lovely stay.

    Marty2019-12-15T00:00:00Z
  • Claire's truck is AMAZING! Come to see it and have a relaxing time with nature. The bed is really good, you have all what you need in it (kitchen's stuff, books and fire!). We spent a wonderful night. Thank you Claire.

  • Relaxation. Tranquility. Comfort.

    Donna2019-08-25T00:00:00Z
  • We stayed at the farm before and this second visit was again excellent! The location is great to explore the Mourne's, escape from the city-drama and find out more about sustainable living. Claire is a kind host and we look forward to another visit in the future!

    Nicolas2019-08-09T00:00:00Z

This is our study so it has built in desk furniture and of course that thing we all have and never use - a sad lonely cross trainer in the corner! The room has a very comfortable silent night double bed. The private bathroom is down the hall and has a bath. There is a shower attachment on the tap but it isn't wall mounted for standing showering.
  • Gayle is very friendly and helpful guest. Our room and bathroom was very clean and we felt comfortable. I recommend this place!

  • A nice place, just around the corner of the Dundrum castle. Kind hosts and cute dogs.

    Donna2019-08-16T00:00:00Z
  • Gayle’s house is in a very nice location. The room and the house were very clean and we were provided with everything we needed, including local tips for good food! Communication was very good and easy.

    Alain2019-08-03T00:00:00Z
  • Gayle and Christian were helpful (even though we were running late on check in and were holding them up from their dinner plans, Gayle helped us with restaurant suggestions and even called ahead to make a booking) and friendly. The bed was comfortable (very important for me!) and the bathroom was clean and spacious.

    Bryonie2019-07-28T00:00:00Z
  • I stayed a week at Gayle's place. The view from the ensuite is stunning. Gayle and her family are really nice people, easy to talk to, and they are helpful and know the area very well. The bed is really comfy and it's really really clean. I was struggling for a place to stay before finding a long term accommodation (for my internship) and I was very welcomed to stay and book a few other nights there. Dundrum is a quiet village, and it's easy to get to Newcastle and visit the Mournes. I would definitely stay at Gayle's place again, it felt like home and enlighted my trip! Thank you very much :)

Location, Location, Location..whether you are looking for a family holiday, romantic break, hiking or a golf trip, Kate's Cottage is in a prime location for all visitors to Newcastle. Our 1930's cottage is located within 500 yards of Royal County Down Golf Course, Slieve Donard Hotel, seafront promenade, beach & main street. The house offers two reception rooms (one with double sofa bed), three bedrooms, spacious kitchen/diner & a newly landscaped rear garden with views of the Mourne Mountains.
Master bedroom can be laid out as a twin room instead of Super King room on request. Travel cot available on request.
  • A well maintained property in a tremendous location, so close to the town - Denise's responses to questions was very quick and we could not have been happier with our choice - the promenade is great for a stroll any time of day - definately recommend this property for those wishing to explore the Mountains of Mourne and surrounding area. Vanilla is a great tapas restaurant - recommend booking as only open on Thursday - Sunday - The Anchor Bar and the Harbour Bar at the top end of town served the best variety of beers.

    Russell2019-09-14T00:00:00Z
  • Lovely little house, it's all about location with this property as beach and all local shops etc are a stones throw away.

    Amanda2019-08-05T00:00:00Z
  • Fantastic host. Real home from home. Every facility and amenity you could think of and more within the cottage. Fantastically located, really near all things Newcastle. Had a great break and Kate’s Cottage was the perfect home from home base.

    Frank2018-08-21T00:00:00Z
  • We have just come back from a great stay in Newcastle, we were a family of 4 adults and 2 children (aged 2 & 5). The house is perfect for families and anyone who needs an easy space to holiday in, having 2 reception rooms meant the adults could get away from the kids when needed. The garden was lovely (& safe) and the kids enjoyed playing in it and we sat out a few times. Location wise it could not have been better. 2 mins to the beach and then all the local shops a 5 min walk away, meaning we could just pop out and pick things up. The area is beautiful, and you can take advantage of all the local sights. Silent Valley, Murlough bay and Castle Ward being particular highlights. Mount Panther was also a hit with the kids. Denise was a very thoughtful host leaving us milk and food for breakfast when we arrived. The communication was excellent and we hope to stay again next year.

    Kaz2018-07-31T00:00:00Z
  • Really delighted with our stay, we all loved it. Denise is a very kind and thoughtful host.

    Kathy2018-07-06T00:00:00Z
  • Had a great stay in this house and would thoroughly recommend. Main pros are location (5mins into town but very quiet street, well located for Lidl shop 2 mins away), great host (very quick response, loan of high chair and kindly allowed early check in) and spacious property, particularly the kitchen which is superbly equipped for self catering. The decor in the house is quite diverse - some very modern touches alongside some older furniture and furnishings - and the bathroom, while clean and functional, was small (no bath but a very nice powerful shower). Overall it was very homely and served as a great base to explore the area. We were sorry to leave.

    Rachel2018-06-23T00:00:00Z
  • great cottage. great host. perfect for a holiday

    Luke2018-06-03T00:00:00Z
  • Lovely clean bungalow, more spacious than expected, really well-located for the beach, promenade and amenities of Newcastle, and was also quiet. Very well-equipped for cooking meals (Lidl was practically next door for buying groceries!) and cleaning up. Beds were comfy. Denise provided useful info and was quick to respond. Highly recommended.

  • If airb&b had a * rating, this would definitely be a 5. The most fantastic little cottage & even better hosts. Meticulously clean & the decor was cottage perfect. Scenery was amazing. Hot water in abundance & great shower. Fabulously cozy little bolt hole in the Mournes. The best part however....the hosts, Valerie & John were just superb. Extremely friendly & helpful. Fresh baked scones & coffee on arrival & a superb breakfast, which to be honest was a real bonus, as many hosts don’t do this. The best little secret on airb&b, you’ve got to go & experience it for yourself. We WILL be back, maybe not with Storm Dennis though. 😁

  • This is the perfect choice if you want to get away from it all for a bit, while still feeling at home. The house is in a very quiet spot with great views of the Mourne mountains, and it's an excellent base for walking and exploring the area - or just relaxing in the sun in front of the house. The room is spacious and has a private bathroom. Chris and Mike were great hosts, making us feel very much at home and supplying us with maps and guidebooks for the area. We shared some lovely moments together and thoroughly enjoyed our stay. Would definitely stay here again! Almost forgot to mention: it's also great value for money.

  • This is a spacious, very clean room with a great view. Beautiful and quiet place to catch up on sleep. Apart of this it is a fantastic mountain area to explore: numerous parks, lakes, tracking paths. A seashore with a few picturesque towns is only 15-20 min to drive. We loved our hosts Chris and Mike for their hospitality and help in any aspect. We plan to return and highly recommend as a place to anyone to have a break from busy modern life.

  • The log cabin is in a great position at the foot of the Mournes as well as being within walking distance of the pubs and restaurants in Newcastle. The bath and the wood burning stove are terrific and there are lots of details which make it a really good space.

  • Honestly one of the most beautiful places I've been, had everything we needed and a lot more, good location, great communication, had a lovely time in front of the fire and watching Netflix hahahaha

    Dylan2020-02-14T00:00:00Z
  • Perfect idyllic cabin! Loved the extra touches, cereals & milk available for breakfast if you need them. We had a lovely couple of nights hauled up here binging on Netflix from the bath with the log fire roaring. Storm Ciara was barely noticed! Would def come back.

  • Amazing little space a stones throw away from the front of Newcastle. Such a cosy little hidden gem that we did not want to leave. Hosts were private but communicated very efficiently, would highly recommend this hidden treasure!

If you want a quiet place in the countryside where you can walk along the country roads into the forest park, this beautiful log cabin is perfect. The cabin has quirky touches that bring the outside inside. It is set behind the owner’s house in their garden, so there is no road noise. The porch has 4 adirondack chairs so you can sit and enjoy the outside space rain or shine. The cabin is open plan, with a loft that can sleep 2 adults or it’s perfect to tuck the children up in while you relax.
There is space to park your car, and walk through to the cabin. There is a stereo system so you can listen to music.
Castlewellan is a perfect base for many interests. The forest park has mountain bike trails, walking paths, an arboretum and Europe’s largest maze. You can also rent kayaks and canoes to paddle around the lake. The Mourne Mountains are easily accessible, and Murlough Beach/Nature Reserve is down the road. There are several outstanding pubs and some lovely cafés in the town. For Game of Thrones fans, Tollymore Forest where many scenes were shot is a few short miles away. Legananny Dolmen, Dromena Cashel and Finnis Souterain are part of StoneAge Tours route for those interested in prehistory.
  • Tracy welcomed us with a lit stove in the cabin. It's a lovely little spot for a place to relax, and enjoy the views and nearby areas. We would definately recommend!

    Emma2020-03-08T00:00:00Z
  • Well this place is just a wee slice of heaven! We have stayed in it just this last weekend and had an absolute ball. The space is clean, beautifully laid out and with some fabulously quirky features like the tree trunks going up through the cabin and the beautiful rainbow fairy lights in the eves. There is everything you need as well as some really thoughtful touches - tea, coffee, Trivial Pursuit etc. and it has the most beautiful views up to the back wall of the forest park along with their two beautiful little Shetland ponies. The cabin is lovely and cosy so despite staying there during storm Jorge we were lovely and snug with the log burner heating the entire cabin and a few electric heaters if you felt the chill. Tracy and Jimmy were fabulous hosts, from Tracy's local knowledge, Jimmy offering us a lift into the town if we wanted to head out for a few toots and making sure we never ran out of logs to burn. I just still can't get over the fact that Jimmy built it and Tracy decorated it - well done. We will be back!

Everything you could possibly need is provided and Tracy is a great host, nothing is too much bother. Just what I needed a relaxing night in a cosy log cabin in front of a roaring fire. Thank you!

  • This is a lovely quiet place to go to to relax or to be close to Castlewellen, Newcastle, Dundrum. The wood burning stove kept the pace toasty and it has great kitchen facilities. The wee veranda was lovely to sit on even in the rain. Would have loved to stay for longer and would definitely like to go back. Lovely, friendly hosts as well. Thanks!

At the foot of the mournes we have the equally beautiful Tollymore Forest park where they recently filmed Game Of Thrones.

Lynda made us feel very welcome, the house is amazing: it is very well restored to it's original tradition design, but is fully modern and cozy inside. The location and views are superb, we really enjoyed our stay and really recommend the cottage.

  • Wonderful place, very close to the beach and view on the mountains.

  • Great little treasure of a bungalow. The host has put so much effort into making this place a home from home, with all of their extra touches. The beds are very cosy. The kitchen is extremely well equipped. The house heats up very quickly with the heating and it retains the heat throughout the day. The yard is secure and great for doggos to do their zoomies. It is very close to the town centre and the local park. But the view out the front window is the best part. We stayed while there was snow on the Mournes. And during storm Dennis. It was so lovely. We are definitely coming back.

  • The pictures don’t do justice to the place. It is fantastic space with a stunning view of the mountains and few minutes walk to the sea shore and pier. The host Deborah had left a lot of thoughtful and useful information to explore the nearby places which came in handy when we went out. Our dog Max made himself at home with the secure garden and relaxed by the electric fire place in the evening. Can’t recommend the place and the host enough, such great hospitality.

Donard Park is 5 minute walk, Newcastle beach and outdoor baths and seaweed baths are 5 min walk. Lovely town, Micheal met us on arrival, he brought us coffee and ice cream from his local business beside the apartment. He had quick chat and left us to it for the weekend. He arrived back on Sunday morning and told us there was no rush to leave. We'll be back for a adventure weekend as soon as the country gets back to normal after Covid 19. A quiet rural retreat, Birch Cottage is off grid and the perfect spot to escape from the world outside. Based on our self sufficient smallholding, you can wake to a view of the beautiful birch woods outside your window, and enjoy the peace and quiet. Walk in the woods, meet the horses and hens, and enjoy fresh produce from our gardens. Some of the most stunning countryside in Northern Ireland is your doorstep. A warm and cosy haven. TNI 4 Star Rated, Green Tourism Gold and Green Key rated.
Birch Cottage sits at the centre of Lackan Cottage Farm, a rural six acre organic smallholding in the heart of the South Down countryside, the home of Steve, Claire and Lyra Golemboski-Byrne. Here we grow our own vegetables, fruit and herbs, keep chickens for eggs, and generate all our own electricity. Our wish is to share the experience of that lifestyle with as many people as possible, and Birch Cottage self catering is an opportunity to do just that. Sleeps 2 – 1 Superking bed or 2 singles. Eco friendly finishes throughout. Heating and hot water is provided by solar panels which power the underfloor heating, supplemented by a cosy woodburner if necessary. The entire farm, including the cottage is off grid - powered entirely by renewable energy on site. We also have our own private woodland for fuel and newly planted willow plantations for basketry and sculpture. We keep two horses on site, which is also home to four cats and lots of chickens. We run courses in various skills such as basket making and greenwoodworking, throughout the year. We also grow plenty of fruit and vegetables, and will let visitors know what is available at the time of their visit. There is: Secure bike store. Drying room, washing machine, dryer. Wifi ****We are unable to accommodate children or pets**** Things to do: Walk around our gardens and woodland. On a clear night, go outside and look at the stars! There are many walks starting from the end of our lane including through Lackan Bog ASSI (which we own a small part of), and which is home to many dragonflies species. We are close to Tollymore and Castlewellan forest parks, Mourne Mountains and the sea. There are lots of maps and guides in the cottage for walking and cycling, and a large rack of many activities from pony trekking to mountain biking to local history such as the Bronte family trail. There are also bird, animal and plant identification books if you spot something interesting. Tourist Board approved 4* accommodation. Green Tourism Gold rated, and the first Green Key approved business in Northern Ireland.
We're based in rural County Down, a short drive away from the Mourne Mountains, Dromara Hills, Slieve Croob, Castlewellan or Tollymore Forest Parks - scene of much of the filming for 'Game of Thrones', and also the beautiful Murlough Bay. Newcastle town and beach are also just 15 minutes drive away.

  • Claire's place was just the perfect stop for our relaxing evening after spending the day in Belfast. We stayed by the fire drinking wine and played guitar. It was perfect! I can't recommend this place enough if you're looking for a relaxing evening away from it all. The bed was so cozy as well and it was very clean. Just 5 stars across the board!

    Mike2020-02-09T00:00:00Z
  • Complete peace in a cosy, country retreat. Stunning sunrise against mountains in the morning. Everything you might need is provided. Would recommend.

    Cat2020-01-18T00:00:00Z
  • Claire and Steve have created a beautiful home away from home. We were there in winter and enjoyed the cosiness of the wood burning stove and the comfortable bed. We cooked nice meals for ourselves - the gas stove was great and we let the peace and quiet soothe us. Lovely part of the world for walks in the Mournes and on the coast. Also wonderful to be off-grid and heated by solar panels and the stove. The cottage has been lovingly constructed with gorgeous wooden worktops and sills and reclaimed rural architecture. Highly recommended!

  • This is one of my favorite new spots. My wife and I couldn’t have settled into Ireland the same way had we not stayed here. Claire suggested so many great things and we ended up doing them all. Just a quick 40 minute drive to Belfast, and an hour from Dublin. You can make this your home base to see some of the best parts of Ireland. Do not hesitate, book this place before I can again!

  • I don’t even want to write this review and tell everyone how amazing it is as I want to keep this place for myself! From the first moment that we booked right up to our departure, Sarah was on hand to answer all of our queries. The space was absolutely beautiful, bigger than it looks in the photos and Sarah really has thought of everything! So many lovely little personal touches, she even asked what my son’s favourite cereal was so that she could provide it! We couldn’t fault a thing and would absolutely recommend this place 100%. We only checked out earlier today and have already booked our return visit!

  • The place is beautiful! It's 2minutes walk from town. The parking is around the corner from the address. Sarah is lovely and friendly with treats left in the fridge for us on arrival. Could not fault the visit. Thanks a million Sarah.

  • Sarah was an excellent host, easy to contact and quick to respond. The accommodation was modern and came with a few extra touches to make the space feel homely, including an electric blanket which is fantastic on those cold winter nights. Would recommend to anyone who is in the area for a wedding or hiking trip. Private car parking and walking distance to local shops and restaurants.

  • What a fantastic Airbnb, very well thought out space, spotlessly clean with everything you need. Sarah is a super host and very welcoming from the very first communication . We will be highly recommending it . I’ve stayed in a few Airbnb’s and this was outstanding in all respects due to Sarah’s attention to detail and a real genuine desire to please . Super location, close to main st with some great little restaurants. Would highly recommend ‘Copper’ as had a lovely meal there and ‘Villa Vinci’ were very accommodating even though we hadn’t booked. 10/10
