Places to stay in Kilchattan Bay

Places to stay in Kilchattan Bay
A cosy and bright one bedroom flat in a small seaside village on Isle Of Bute. Our place is a Scottish island rural getaway (but just an over an hours travel time from Glasgow) which is right on the beach with woodburning stove, good views, great walks, and near to local points of interest such as Mount Stuart House.
Our little one bed place in secluded Kilchattan Bay on the Isle of Bute is clean, quiet and bright. There's a wood burning stove in the living room from which there's views over the well-kept front garden (which is shared with the other flats in the block), a church and the sea. We have a large TV and DVD player, and feel free to read the books on the shelf. There is broadband, with free access for guests. Kitchen includes everything you need for cooking (inc microwave/hob/oven) and a washing machine. Please note the large fridge in the picture has been replaced with an ordinary domestic fridge! The one bedroom is small, with a double bed and storage for clothes, and partial sea views. There's a shower room, and outside there's a shed with log storage. The flat is right next to the local post office/shop, and there's a pub half a mile walk up the road which serves good food. There are regular bus services to Rothesay (10 miles) and the rest of the island. But the best thing about Kilchattan Bay and the reason to come here is the peace and quiet and the beautiful scenery. Easy access to beautiful beaches, walks along the coastline, cycles round and off the island. HOW TO GET HERE: CalMac Ferry from Wemyss Bay to Rothesay (19 sailings daily). Regular buses from Rothesay to Kilchattan Bay (it's a 7 mile distance). There is also a taxi stand at the ferry port in Rothesay, or you can hire bikes from next to the taxi stand (opening hours for bike hire is 9 till 5 though).
  • Great location for exploring bute. Well described and good local tips. well equipped kitchen and if you don’t feel like cooking the pub (almost exactly a mile up the road) does nice food. The dog loved the beach and the West Island way all right on the doorstep. Great communication easy check in and out, recommended.

  • Beautiful flat in a stunning location, beach is right on your doorstep which is great for walking the dog. It’s the perfect base for exploring Bute with all the basics you need. Thanks again and we will definitely be recommending your flat to family and friends.

  • Beautiful wee flat in a stunning location. Rothesay itself is nice enough but the beauty of Bute is to be found around the various bags of the island including Kilchattan. The bedroom has a beautiful view out to the bay and depending on the weather you can catch a glorious sunrise, while enjoying your morning coffee. Kathleen, who was managing the place on behalf of the host was very quick in responding to my queries and helpful with tips on what to do in the flat and around the island. The flat itself was well presented; cosy but also quite trendy and the fireplace is awesome for sitting having a whisky and reading your book. Definitely hope to visit again!

  • Fantastic location, with beach pretty much on your doorstep! Lovely walks all around you and 10 minutes drive from Rothesay Town centre. Highly recommend Helmi's Cafe for cakes and light lunch and Kingarth Hotel 3 minutes drive away for lovely homely food.

  • Isla's place is a delight! The village is quiet and fairly isolated, perfect if you want to get away from it all for a while. There are some fantastic coastal walks nearby and Rothesay is only 20 minutes away. The flat itself is beautiful and very cosy. The wood burning fire is an especially nice touch in the winter. Isla's mum is on hand to help and her communication is super quick and personal. I'd recommend Isla's place to anyway and I will definitely be back again!

  • Isla's flat is absolutely beautiful. It had all the amenities expected including heaters in all the rooms which was very much needed during a cold November week. The flat is perfectly situated next to the bus stop and there are lovely walks in the area including West Island Way. I would definitely want to stay there again.

    Charlotte2019-11-17T00:00:00Z
  • I loved Isla's little flat! I was there six weeks and it felt like home. Great wifi, all amenities that I could possibly need regarding bedding, kitchen, linens, etc. Charming little flat. My favorite thing was lounging in bed and watching the tides come in and out. Location is spectacular if you like nice walks, both long and short. The location is very quiet which met my needs perfectly. Tiny shop/tea room next door for chatting it up with the locals. Super nice hosts. Pub a 20 minute walk, with nice home cooked meals available all day everyday at the Kingarth Hotel. Isle of Bute is a paradise for hikers and mountain bike riders and I highly recommend!

Kilchattan Bay, Isle of Bute, United Kingdom

This is our vibrant, modern, bright cottage in Kilchattan Bay on the Isle of Bute. While we don't offer a sea view from this property, we are less than a 30 second walk on to the beach. The cottage has it's own private seating area in a large beautiful shared garden. The Isle of Bute has an abundance of beautiful walks and trails to offer and an array of wildlife. Seals, deer and osprey to name a few.
This property is made up of a modern open plan kitchen/living room area, well lit by skylights - no windows (On the wall) in the kitchen/living room. The double bedroom is ample with a double bed, bedside cabinets, lamps and a wardrobe for hanging space, this room has a large window facing the pretty garden. The bathroom has a shower, toilet, sink and heated towel rail. Kilchattan Bay does not have a gas supply for central heating or cooking so we provide electric radiators and in the living room we have a wall mounted coal fire effect heater. We have 1 television in the living room and a blu-ray player along with a large selection of movies. Kilchattan Bay is very peaceful with a wonderful relaxed pace of life - no one's in a hurry here. It is utterly beautiful. Mobile phone signal can be a bit hit and miss - which is perfect if you're getting away from it all! We do provide free WiFi.
Peaceful, pretty, quiet, relaxed. Bliss. Kilchattan Bay is a small remote village with 1 shop (through the wall from the cottage) which is a Post Office, cafe and basic grocery shop. The shop is open Mon-Sat 0930-1400 during "out-of-season" months. 0930-1600 remainder of the year. If you'd like to order a newspaper or bread/rolls please contact me and I will arrange this with the shop for you. One mile (roughly) from the cottage, following one easy, quiet road, is Kingarth Hotel https://www.kingarthhotel.co.uk which is the only restaurant/pub nearby. Kingarth is a cosy restaurant serving good food and good portions, fair choice with good service and reasonably priced.
  • Hi this place is a great place to stay and great location for any kind of trip nice and clean and everything u need for a weekend away or even a week would recommend for sure

  • This is a great little flat, behind the shop, right on the shore of the bay. It is a really comfortable space with loads of light flooding in through the skylights. We loved it!

  • Lovely apartment with everything we needed. Kitchen well equipped, shower room clean, tidy and spacious, bed/s or good size and reasonably comfortable, living area roomy and comfortable with TV, DVD player and WiFi. Courtyard apartment so no 'views' within, but literally metres from the beach. Plenty on street parking. Very quiet. Stewart was an excellent host, quick to answer any queries. Would book again. :)

Right next to the sea for beautiful views- we watched the ships pass up and down. You can fish or hike and there is a post office/small shop/tea room which does good filter coffee right by the sea.

Number 5 is located on the waterfront in Kilchattan Bay on the Isle of bute, surrounded by stunning landscapes and beautiful scenery. It is located in a very quite and peaceful village at the south end of the Island just 15 minutes drive from the main town of Rothesay.
Keep everyone busy with an xbox, dvd's, games, superfast broadband and catch up TV and HD Netflix. Flexible check in with lockbox for key.
Kilchattan Bay post office is available for all your essentials including coffee and cake. The Kingarth Hotel and Smiddy Bar is a 15 minute walk away and serves good food all day with an extensive specials board over the log burning fire. Kingarth Golf Club is a 9 hole golf course 10 mins drive away that welcomes visitors (honesty box). There is horse trekking on the island. Sea kayaking is popular and can be booked even as a beginner. Loch Fad has trout/pike fishing available on its 175 acre loch.
  • We really enjoyed our week in Kilchattan Bay. The views are beautiful. There is lots to do on Bute, probably more so in warmer weather. Kevin and Amanda suggested lots of places to visit also, which was really useful. The flat was well equipped and comfortable.

    Emma2019-10-19T00:00:00Z
  • This is top class accommodation in a great location. What else could you ask for! Communication was excellent throughout and everything was in place to make our stay very comfortable and stress free. I would highly recommend.

    David2019-08-26T00:00:00Z
  • Lovely house right on the sea, really clean and cosy with everything you need.

    Rebecca2019-08-14T00:00:00Z
  • A really warm and comfortable space with fully equipped kitchen for every need. I really can’t fault it at all. Lovely views from the bay window and plenty of local walks. Prompt and useful information from the hosts.

    Fiona2018-09-17T00:00:00Z
  • We hadn't visited Bute before and Amanda & Kevin were brilliant at sending us directions and tips about what to do on the island. The apartment was great, lovely stylish rooms, very well kitted out with everything you need while on holiday and more, stunning views - the main reason we chose to stay here was the view of the sea and it was even better than we had hoped. We would really recommend this place and hope to be back in future.

    Kate2018-08-21T00:00:00Z
  • A clean apartment with everything you need for a self catering holiday. Plenty of room for a couple or a family of 4. The hosts Amanda and Kevin respond quickly to any enquiries or questions you may have. Kilchattan is very quiet with one road in and out but if you want to spend time sitting or walking on the quiet beach or enjoy the many walking/ cycling routes nearby it is an ideal base to stay on the Isle of Bute. We particularly liked sitting at the large bay window looking across the bay with a drink in our hands!

    Norman2018-07-13T00:00:00Z
  • Just home from another wonderful stay in Kilchattan Bay. We have spent time over the last few years in the Bay as a family staying in various properties, but this was by far our favourite. The flat was spacious, stylish and comfortable and offered everything we needed with two small children. Amanda and Kevin were excellent hosts, making sure we were happy with everything they could offer. I cannot recommend this location and property enough and we are already looking forward to our return visit.

    Gary2018-07-07T00:00:00Z
  • We had a very relaxing and interesting stay at number 5 which is a very comfortable home from home. The house was right by a sandy beach and sea is good for early morning swims. The garden was good for Bar B Q. It was interesting to sit in the window of the lounge and watch the ships go by There are several easy walks in the area and an interesting visit to castle with afternoon tea. There is a regular convenient bus service to all parts of the island. For meals out there is an excellent local hotel I would recommend number 5 for any family or group as it is situated where there is lots to do for all members of the family

Ideal for exploring the Isle of Bute and beyond.Transport links, bus and ferry , are all at your door step. Next time I might leave the car on the mainland and arrive by foot. Parking is easy though and free on road outside. A Coop supermarket, open everyday including Sunday’s is tucked away conveniently around the back of the flat and stocked everything we needed. The views of the sea and hills are so romantic and watching the ferry coming and going gives you that sense of being on an Island. We loved every minute of our stay in Keith’s flat.

Cosy one-bedroom flat on the seafront in the centre of Rothesay. A convenient base for stopovers and leisure trips, close to ferry and supermarket. My place is good for couples and solo adventurers.
  • Keiths place was a 2 min walk from the CaMac Ferry and it was clean and tidy. It was great to look out over the water when we got up in the morning and having the Co-op just behind the flat was convenient. Wifi worked just fine, in fact everything was just fine and Keith was available if we needed anything. Overall a great comfortable stay

  • Providing all the essentials for a comfortable stay, this quiet, clean flat comes with a bonus- a luxury view. Not only stunning, the view of the bay is soothing, transforming the flat into a peaceful retreat. I found comfort in viewing the steady departure and arrival of the ferry from Rothesay to Wemyss Bay. The flat is conveniently located for quick access to shops, local buses, and the ferry. Cross the street and you can enjoy Rothesay’s esplanade or take a few steps further for a walk along the shore at low tide. Keith was a helpful host, responding quickly to any questions I had and giving me great recommendations on what to see on the island and in Glasgow.

  • Great location and Keith is very quick to answer any questions

  • Great location, cosy flat, 3rd time here and will do it again. Many thanks keith.

    Sharon2019-04-27T00:00:00Z
  • I liked Keith's place so much I booked an extra month! Amazing views over to the mainland, all kinds of birdlife, can spot the occasional seal and basking shark while having your breakfast. Peace and quiet yet supermarket, takeaways, bike hire etc a minute's walk. Highly recommended.

    Russell2018-07-06T00:00:00Z
  • I was unable to stay at Keith's place due to (disastrous) unforeseen circumstances, and he was so helpful and understanding about the cancellation. I would love to try this trip again at a later time, and although I didn't get to stay there I would highly recommend Keith as a host. Thanks so much!

    Alexandra2018-03-02T00:00:00Z
  • The flat was just as advertised: a clean, well-equipped place in a great location and with a lovely seaside view. Had pretty much everything you could ask for. I really appreciated the fact that I was able to cook in a private kitchen during my stay. Keith was also a great host, responded quickly whenever I had any questions. I would highly recommend!

  • The flat is located in central Rothesay and is very accessible. It is close to shops, restaurants and pubs. The flat contains all the necessities and is excellent value for money. The view from the flat over Rothesay bay is very restful.

"Home away from Home" Beautifully furnished cosy little Glamping Container by the Sea at Scalpsie Bay on the Isle of Bute.
Surrounded by nature your neighbours will be the birds and the bees as well as the seals sunbathing on their rocky perches at Scalpsie Bay. Of course other people may visit the beach aswell :)
  • Great place and location. Cozy, simple and quiet. Peaceful.

  • You'll struggle to find a more beautiful spot on Bute to relax and enjoy being close to nature. Perfect for a few days away.

    Vanessa2020-02-10T00:00:00Z
  • The cabin is a little piece of heaven in the most beautiful setting. Strongly recommend the southern circular walk.

    Tabitha2020-01-11T00:00:00Z
  • Lisa's cabin is so beautiful and cosy, the fire started easily and had the whole space toasty very quickly. Because it was winter there wasnt much power coming from the solar panels, but we had enough light to sit and read while drinking wine looking out at the moon shining over the sea. A beautiful weekend. The cabin in easy to find down the path to Scalpsie Bay

    Bertie2020-01-05T00:00:00Z
  • Wonderful place, cozy, perfect location. If you want peace and relaxation with the option of taking a stroll in beautiful nature, this is the place. We loved it.

    Rebecca2019-12-29T00:00:00Z
  • My experience here was nothing short of incredible! The cabin looks out onto the ocean, and there’s a breathtaking mountain island in the distance. A warm fire in the stove behind me provided the perfect setting to do some journaling, drawing and reflecting. The bed and bedding were very comfortable, and the skylight above the bed convinced me that I want a skylight in my own home. House was perfectly and thoughtfully furnished, and Lisa was so friendly and helpful. I arrived after it was dark, and Lisa made sure the arrival was seamless. The hikes along the beach were invigorating, and it was fun to watch planes try and land at the airstrip when there were highs winds. I highly recommend staying here!

    John2019-11-12T00:00:00Z
  • Lisa’s pod is in an idyllic setting on Scalpsie beach. Five min walk from where you leave your car. Take wellies! Amazing views across to Arran from pod. Everything was provided to enable us to self cater although we can highly recommend Kingarth Hotel for food and Ettrick cafe for cake! Although small, we never felt like we were cramped and we could have happily spent longer there. Thank you very much Lisa!

    Claire2019-11-02T00:00:00Z
  • Having grown up in the island I knew all about its natural beauty but even I was blown away by the location of Lisa’s Shepard’s Hut. Waking up to a view across Scalpsie Bay to the mountains of Arran was truly breathtaking. The Hut itself was incredible. All you could want when looking to escape the hectic lifestyle on the mainland. Huge comfy bed, great wee wood burner, and all the amenities you’d want for a real getaway. Lisa and Ian were great at making us feel welcome and giving us excellent recommendations of what to do and where to go on the island. Thank you!! Next time I will bring my wetsuit so I can go wild swimming in this stunning location.

Ground floor one bedroom flat with open plan lounge/kitchen area. With sea view and access to back garden.
Fabulous sea views. Great to sit at the window and watch the ferries go by.
  • What an amazing flat in a great location. Rachel had loads of thoughtful extras laid out on our arrival. Croissants, jam, milk, orange juice to name a few which were really appreciated by both of us. There is also an honesty bar laid on if you fancy a drink while chilling in the living room area. The flat was spotless and very well decorated and comfortable. Central location for all the bars, restaurants, and shops and only a five min walk to the ferry. We will definitely be back and stay again and can highly recommend Rachel's flat if you are looking for a base to explore the wonders of Bute.

    Janet-Ann2019-12-08T00:00:00Z
  • We had a lovely time at Rachel's place in Bute - the place was super clean, well equipped, cozy and very tastefully decorated. It is perfect for a little getaway. :) It is conveniently located close to the ferry, local shops and the views on the sea and hills are beautiful. Rachel was very accommodating, friendly and communication with her was great - thank you so much for having us, we will surely be back!

  • This flat is absolutely lovely! It’s was spotlessly clean when we arrived. The decor and furnishings are to a very high standard. What made this extra special was all the little extra’s :- • Tea and coffee in stock • Fresh milk and Orange Juice in the fridge • croissants and jam . Plenty clean fluffy towels . Lots of toiletries in the bathroom • An honesty bar in the living room, although we did not use this it was certainly a nice touch The flat is in a great location, literally just a few minutes from the ferry. It’s close to all the local shops, bars and restaurants and it has the most amazing views of the Firth of Clyde. I contacted the Host a few times and she responded each time within minutes. A true “Super Host”! I would not hesitate to recommend this as a place to stay to friends and family and I will most certainly be back.

    Richard2019-10-27T00:00:00Z
  • Delightful apartment in an amazingly convenient location very close to the ferry terminal. Beautifully decorated, immaculate, and with thoughtful touches such as scotch pancakes and jam for breakfast! We enjoyed cycling out to visit Mount Stuart, getting fish and chips from the West End Cafe, watching a movie at the local cinema (in the tourist info building), and a lunch at Harry Haw’s. Lovely weekend getaway, highly recommend!

No smoking.. Ideal for large family gatherings and celebrations, this spacious, detached holiday house on the Isle of Bute was previously a hotel and occupies a prime position on the water’s edge, with spectacular views of the sea and the surrounding islands, showing the west of Scotland at its very best. If you can drag yourself away from the mesmerising views from the windows of St Blanes House, then there is plenty to do on the Isle of Bute. The island has been named as one of National Geographics ’Top10’ global adventure trips. There are many breathtaking scenic walks: the West Island Way Walk starts in the same village and the Kelspoke Trail meanders behind the house over the heather covered hills and takes in the glorious sea views. There are three golf courses on the island, cycle tracks, horse riding, kayaking and lots of wildlife to see. For those interested in fishing, the inland lochs are popular with anglers for coarse and game fishing. Loch Fad offers anglers an opportunity to fish for rainbow trout while those with a passion for sea angling are spoilt for choice. Close by is Mount Stuart House, an extravagantly decorated stately home. It is said to contain more marble than any other building in the British Isles and has become a popular location for wealthy celebrity weddings including Stella McCartney and JB Gill from the band JLS. A few miles away is the island’s main town of Rothesay, a traditional Victorian seaside resort which has managed to maintain its grand architecture. It still has its ancient castle, built to fend off the Vikings, and a museum. From Rothesay harbour trips can be taken around the islands on the Waverley, the last sea-going paddle steamer ship in the world. Further along the coast is the pretty harbour town of Port Bannatyne. There are also other sites such as St Blanes Chapel and Ascog Fernery to be found. The island attracts many annual festivals including the Jazz Festival in May, T in the Port in June, ButeFest, for music and food in July, the Bute Highland Games in August and the Baird Festival of Flight in September to mark the first ’All Scottish, heavier than air, powered flight in 1910’, just a few years after the Wright brothers first flight in France. At the north end of the Isle of Bute is a wee car ferry that provides easy access to the Cowal Peninsula and another way onto the mainland for those wishing to explore the Highlands of Scotland. The house is located in the small village of Kilchattan Bay, it has a glorious sweeping sandy beach where children and dogs can run freely. A small stone pier near the house is suitable for launching small boats and jet skis into the beautiful clear sea. It has a post office and a pub with good food, 1 mile away (they run a free courtesy mini bus). St Blanes House aims to be one of the best self-catering venues for family get togetherness, corporate away days, weddings or parties in Scotland. It has a large games room with a table tennis table, pool table, darts board, lots of toys and board games etc. In the living room is a selection of musical equipment, drum kit, guitars, microphones, amplifier, keyboard, trumpet, karaoke machine and even flashing lights. The dining room has hosted many weddings in the past when it was a hotel. Weddings can be performed by prior arrangement with the local registry officer and catering can be organised. All the bedrooms are themed to add a bit of fun and interest to your stay. You can arrange for a dog walker and cleaner (at cost) to visit during your stay to ensure everyone has a chance to relax! Beach 25 yards. Shop 150 yards, pub and restaurant 1 mile. Free WiFi

  • Catrina's place is in a great location for exploring the island and very easy to find from the ferry. It is very nicely decorated with cosy lounge and very comfortable bed. Catrina has made a great effort to add lots of thoughtful touches such as nice teas and coffees, and bits and pieces from the local area. Catrina's hospitality made the stay extra special and convenient. I would thoroughly recommend.

  • We had a great few days here at Catrina’s. The flat is so cute and warm. Absolutely loved all the little touches she had dotted around the place. Glad we managed to catch a moment of the cat’s time before she went back to roaming around the garden. Kitchen great for cooking. Very best wishes Catrina, it was wonderful.

  • Catrina’s place is in the perfect location for a visit to Rothesay as has gorgeous views and it’s a lovely walk into town! The flat is a great space with absolute everything you need for a short break, it is sparkly clean and has the comfiest bed ever - we didn’t want to leave!! We visited with our 14 week baby boy and there was lots of room in the bedroom for his travel cot and also in the living area for his play mat. Catrina was a great host, very helpful and friendly! Would 100% recommend staying at Catrinas place, we will definitely return! Thank you Catrina!

  • Catrina’s apartment is very comfortable for two people and a dog, with a very comfy bed and lovely fluffy towels. Catrina provided a wealth of information about Bute, places to visit, walks etc. It was our first visit to Bute but definitely won’t be our last. We walked the first stage of the West Island Way, which is just over 5 miles, with a mix of coastal and hill walking and great views; would definitely recommend. Also good walks on the doorstep up to Canada Hill providing great views of Rothesay and beyond. All in all a very enjoyable stay.

Isle of Bute, Scotland, United Kingdom

Bute is a hidden gem on Scotland's western coast. You could say it is a miniature Scotland (15km long and 6.5km wide). This apartment is in an ideal location (Rothesay) to best enjoy all that this magical island has to offer.
I bought this property in June 2015 and have loved spending time here renovating the apartment to its current condition. It's a Victorian building situated directly on the seafront, next to Rothesay harbour. The apartment is on the fourth (top) floor, but believe me the reward is the world-class sea view! (however I'd advise you to consider this factor if you think the stairs might be a problem for you). The apartment itself feels warm and cosy with plenty of space for up to four adults. The apartment boasts two double bedrooms located at either end of the hallway from each other, offering maximum privacy. The living room area offers a comfortable area to relax, watch television or catch up on the day's escapades around the island. The apartment has gas central heating throughout, easily controlled via an iPhone app (iPhone supplied). The kitchen offers full cooking facilities along with a nespresso coffee machine. There is an island in the kitchen that you can sit at to keep the nominated chef in your party company! There is full WiFi available along with an HD television and Apple TV, offering Netflix and other movies available via iTunes. An airplay enabled speaker in the living room allows you to play any music you wish via your own devices or via the iPhone or iPad that are available for your convenience. The apartment is located about a five minute walk (if that) from the ferry terminal, so it is possible to arrive via the ferry as a foot passenger. If you'd rather bring your car there is plenty of free parking just in front of the apartment building.
For a small island, the scenery found on Bute is unusually varied with soft rolling hills, craggy heather-covered moorland, spectacular beaches and ancient woodlands. All this is surrounded by the clearest waters and glorious views of Arran Mountains, the Cowal Hills and the majestic sweep of the Clyde Estuary. Bute is also on the Gulf Stream, which means it enjoys a warm microclimate. Don't be surprised at the sight of palm trees gracing the gardens on the island. Two other things that have always kept me going back to Bute is the chance to be close to nature - wildlife abounds in Bute and I have often woken up to see deer in the garden or almost bumped into one while out walking. Seals are one of my favourite animals and I never miss a chance to go to Scalpsie Bay or Ascog to look at them up close. The other thing that draws me back is the people. It's a friendly place with a strong sense of community. You don't feel the gap between locals and visitors like you do in many other holiday destinations. You might be a visitor, but you never feel like a tourist.
  • Great apartment in a great location - we will definitely be returning here in the future.

This beautiful two bedroom apartment is one of a kind, known as ‘The Dome’ due to its shape. Situated on the top floor of historical building, Duncans’ Hall - the apartment enjoys stunning views from every room. Set over two levels, the Dome offers a spacious open plan living area and a modern clean kitchen on the top floor, with two double bedrooms on the lower level. This is a perfect getaway apartment - 5 mins walk from the ferry, castle, art galleries, restaurants, pubs and shops.
The decor is modern and stylish with a nautical theme. The modern kitchen is fully contained, and offers all the mod cons to make you feel at home. The main bedroom has an ensuite shower/sink, in addition to the main bathroom, with plenty of hot water through a combi-boiler. A playstation (PS3) and second TV is provided for extra entertainment and a Clavinova piano if you wish to have a tinker:) The open living lounge/kitchen area has two 4 seater sofas for extra comfort and relaxation. there is free Wifi, Now TV and a Bluetooth radio for quiet evenings in! Please note that there are stairs to the apartment and unfortunately ’The Dome’ is not suitable for those with mobility issues.
Having lived here for two years, I cannot recommend Rothesay more highly as a place for relaxation, exploration and socialising. There are some great restaurants, pubs and cafes, as well as the Glenburn - a stunning hotel which hosts regular events - to simply relax and watch the world go by - and Helmi's Bakery which serves amazing coffee and freshly baked cakes! There are many social events through the Summer, including live music at the Scottish Honky Tonk (or Skonk as it is lovingly known:) and Musiker too - a vegetarian cafe with great food. There are art exhibitions on every month at the Bute Gallery, and children's events and activities galore! For sight-seeing, Mount Stuart - a beautiful Neo-Gothic Country House - is a must-see, with its stunning interiors, artefacts and many gardens. St Blane's - for those who have an interest in history - is a beautiful walk and an incredibly peaceful place with a chapel and graveyard dating back to the Viking era. Then there are the beaches ...so many beaches! Ettrick Bay is the most popular with its great little cafe and long walk up to the Bird Hide; Scalpsie Bay is the sunbathing location of our many seals, with Kilchattan Bay, and St Ninians bay both beautiful places with great walks into the countryside if one chooses. There are also lots of wonderful walking routes - one right behind the apartment, which is a woodland walk that will take you past farms, horses and with a reward at the top which shows the whole of the surrounding waters out to Dunoon. Lastly, there is Rothesay Castle, along with the museum and the Discovery Centre, and an ever-growing town centre with lots of unique shops and boutiques. For all that it is a small island, the Isle of Bute offers so much for every age, interest and ability. I hope you’ll come and enjoy this little island as much as I do!

  • This is a very comfortable and stylish flat in the heart of Rothesay. Its up four flights of stairs but that means it s got a terrific view over the harbour. There are a lot of useful distractions in the flat , and being on two levels a lot of private space if needed. Very good info on area and communication with host was easy and helpful.

    Ewan2019-07-29T00:00:00Z

Feel free to make your own meals in our fully equipped breakfasting kitchen with free tea and coffee on tap, or relax in our large lounge with TV, games, books and plenty of seating and dining areas.
The hostel itself is an old Victorian house with period features, high ceilings and the kind of charm that you only find with properties of this era:) The TV is located in the lounge - the main shared area where many solo travellers have found new friends (We seem to have more than our fair share of warm and friendly people staying here). If you are out in the evening, the door is always open;there is no curfew, but I do ask guests to respect the peace and wellbeing of others staying. We also have a buggy/bike store, barbecue area and free tea/coffee.
Rothesay offers a great variety of pubs, and events - and we are soon to see the opening opening of the Pavilion in April which will offer everything from music events and dining experiences to exhibitions and craft fairs. There is a little nightclub in the town centre for those who like a bit of a boogie (yes, I did say that) as well as a museum and of course, our wonderful discovery centre which houses a permanent exhibition on Rothesay’s history as well as a cute little cinema showing the latest films. Best of all though, we have an abundance of beautiful woodland walks - and of course, plenty of great beaches! Ettrick Bay is a favourite, with a superb tearoom and playpark right on beach; Scalpsie Bay is a must if you enjoy rugged seaside walks, and Kilchattan Bay offers many little rock pools for little people to hunt for sealife. Along Kerry Croy way you will often see seals basking on the rocks and the walk around to the lighthouse at Kilchattan is a stunning walk with views of neighbouring islands ...and the odd submarine!

  • A wonderfully clean and relaxing flat located nearby just about everything in Rothesay. We thoroughly enjoyed Janice's warm hospitality and the welcoming stash of provisions she provided for us. ;o) The flat is located on the first floor of the building (read as stairs) and therefore may not be for everyone. If that's no issue, you will really enjoy the space. The kitchen has everything you need to be self-sufficient during your stay and the family room is cozy and relaxing. Even our visitors commented on the flat! We'll be looking out for #1 Union Street when we return to visit again!

  • It’s in a great location just up from the castle and close to the town. The street is quiet with adequate parking. The flat itself is so welcoming with individual touches( we were there at new year and there were Christmas lights up) If your going to Rothesay this is the place to stay,

    Karen2020-01-02T00:00:00Z
  • Lovely flat and perfect for what we were looking for! Choice of cereals for breakfast was a lovely touch , as was the small Christmas tree and lights! Will definitely be staying again!

  • We loved Janice’s place, it was sparkling clean and comfortable. It has a well-equipped kitchen, a cosy living room and the stylish bedroom has a comfy bed. Janice has provided everything guests will need for their stay, tourist brochures and recommendations about the best places to eat and drink and visitors attractions. The flat is near the town centre and Janice has thought of everything to make sure guests have an enjoyable stay. Being a superhost myself I knew the standard would be high and I was not disappointed.

  • Wow wow wow wow wow! It’s places like this that make you want to go and live in Scotland. The hosts are lovely, fully deserving of the “super-host” label. The house is spacious yet cosy, traditional but stylish. Everything worked well - from sumptuous power shower to the warming wood burner. A short walk to Scalpsie Bay, which is just magical.

    Jonathan2020-03-08T00:00:00Z
  • We had a lovely stay at the farm, it had everything you could need, including the biggest collection of the DVDs for those rainy days. The place was sparkling clean and was so lovely and cossy with the log burning fire. Would definitely return, and highly recommend!!

    Lucy2020-02-23T00:00:00Z
  • We had a fantastic stay at Scalpsie Farm. We arrived in the middle of Storm Dennis so it was wonderful to be in such a warm and comfortable house. The house had everything we needed for our 18 month old little boy and he loved seeing the tractors and animals outside the window. A definite highlight was meeting the beautiful puppies. We had a great time and hope to be back during better weather to make the most of the gorgeous beach and views across to Arran.

    Jennifer2020-02-17T00:00:00Z
  • Lisa's place was perfect for our half term break. It was very spacious and absolutely spotlessly clean. Lisa was extremely accommodating, as it was a last minute booking. The uncertainty with the ferry/weather could have caused problems but Lisa was in contact and offered alternatives, had we needed them.

    Nichola2020-02-11T00:00:00Z
  • Scalpsie Farm is a wonderful location on a beautiful island. Lisa's place was extremely homely with amazing views and walks. We wanted to take your bay window and views back home with us. What a great place to visit and stay, you will not be disappointed only when it comes to leave..we wanted to stay longer..maybe next time.

  • Lila’s apartment is at the ‘dormer level’ of a goodly sized residence now converted to apartments. It has a wonderful view of Rothesay and the bay...which means there’s a bit of a climb to get to the apartment. I would classify the apartment as cozy, but with a surprisingly large kitchen/dining area. The kitchen appears to be well-applianced, but having made use only of the frig and dining area, I can’t comment from personal experience. The small-ish bedroom has the dormer, and the living room has a bay window with built-in seating for watching the activity on the bay to your heart’s content. Overall, the interior projects a cheerful feel with a strong sense of pride of ownership. I very much enjoyed the apartment. I communicated with Lila entirely via email. There were no glitches. I always had the feeling that she was committed to ensuring that I had a pleasant experience in her apartment.

    Wilson Todd2018-08-19T00:00:00Z
  • This is a great place to stay - very clean and everything you would want. Lila has put a lot of thought in ensuring our stay was hassle free. The extra tourist information provided in the property gave us a lot of ideas of things to do - I especially appreciated the OS map of the area! Thanks Lila and we may be back soon!!

    Julie2018-08-12T00:00:00Z
  • Lila's flat by far exceeded our, already quite high, expectations. The flat is beautiful, with amazing views and manages to be both cosy and spacious. It proved a lovely base for our exploration of an equally lovely island - neither of us wanted to leave!

    Elizabeth2018-06-04T00:00:00Z
  • Lila was such a helpful and responsive host from initial booking enquiry right through to our departure. The flat was spotlessly clean and cosy. It is 10 minutes walk from the centre of Rothesay so it was lovely and peaceful with a wood at the back of the garden. We hope to return later in the year. If you’re eating in the sausages from McQueen’s butchers are amazing. Bute brewery is also worth a visit, for the beer and pizzas.

    Josephine2018-04-03T00:00:00Z
  • Fantastic views from this eyrie! Bute is laid out for you and we loved just sitting in the window seat watching the world. Peaceful Bute we loved it ! Great flat, everything you need and lots of little touches which are always welcome. We will return. Lovely communications from Lila added to the experience. We met lovely people there too. Friendly and nothing was too much bother. Brilliant!

    Stella2017-08-21T00:00:00Z
  • Great little flat. Kitchen pretty well equipped for self-catering, and we appreciated the things like tea, coffee, salt, pepper, shampoo and other consumables provided. Be prepared for the steep climb from street level and then two flights of steps. The view from the flat is terrific.

    Andrew2017-08-13T00:00:00Z
  • Lila's apartment is wonderful...it is on the top floor of a beautiful old house on the top of a small hill next to a wood. The view from the living room is inspired. It looks over Rothesay and the bay and mainland Scotland. To see this everyday was a total joy! Me, and my wife loved this apartment, felt at home and very cosy, and were sad to leave. It was our special little Bute nest for the week : )

As Charlotte knew we had children, she'd arranged for a Christmas tree to be placed in the front room which was such a lovely extra! The flat is ideally located, beautifully clean and perfect for us. There is free parking at the back of the building and free parking at the front too. We are situated about 7/8 minutes walk from the main ferry pier and you can watch the ferry coming in from the front windows. There are lots of places to explore on the island with beautiful beaches, Ettrick Bay (where there is a lovely home baking tea room and small swing park), also Scalpsie Bay which is almost deserted ! There are also golf courses with lovely views and other swing parks for the kids. Rothesay is a 100 seater cinema with all the latest films on realise. Spacious, recently decorated and is in the heart of Rothesay Town. It's a ground floor flat with back and front door. There is disabled parking bays right outside front door and street parking. The local co-op is right on the door step followed by bars restaurants and shops just metres away. Bus stop, taxi rank and Rothesay pier is only several minuets away as well as the prom just along the street. I have added my own personal touch to make it as homely and comfortable as I can .
My place is fresh and modern. From fresh flowers to artificial ones, I believe every detail counts.
It's busy during day as its in the centre of town but it does quieten down after tea time.
  • Janine’s place was great, central and close to amenities. Clean, tidy and had everything we needed.

  • Janine’s home is amazing, very central, the flat is huge, front and back door, lovely wee garden and the beds are really comfortable. Janine had left fresh milk, eggs and bread for us, the flat is well equipped, clean and comfy.

  • This is a wonderful place for 2-4 people to stay when visiting Rothesay or any part of Bute. Janine the host is easy to deal with and the accommodation was first rate, immaculately clean, well placed and well presented. Lots of nice touches from flowers in room to milk in the fridge. We travelled with friend who has restricted mobility and this property was perfect, easy access and designated disabled parking. Would recommend anybody to stay here.

Ideal party house for large family gatherings and celebrations. Sleeps 25x
ST BLANE ‘S HOUSE, KILCHATTAN BAY, ISLE OF BUTE Enjoy a fun weekend with 30 x friends and family on the beautiful Isle of Bute at St Blane's House. This spacious self-catering, holiday house was previously a hotel and offers spectacular views of the sea and the surrounding islands, showing the West of Scotland at its very best. If you can drag yourself away from the mesmerising views, then there is plenty to do on the Isle of Bute. There are scenic walks: the West Island Way Walk starts in the same village and the Kelspoke Trail meanders behind the house over the heather covered hills and takes in the glorious sea views. There are three golf courses on the island, cycle tracks, horse riding, kayaking and lots of wildlife to see. For those interested in fishing, there are inland lochs for coarse and game fishing. Close by is Mount Stuart House, an extravagantly decorated stately home. A few miles away is the island’s main town of Rothesay, a traditional Victorian seaside resort. The house is located in the small village of Kilchattan Bay, it has a glorious sweeping sandy beach where children and dogs can run freely. A stone pier near the house is suitable for launching small boats and jet skis. It has a pub nearby with good food. St Blane's House has a large dinning room with a comfortable seating area and an open fire. A separate lounge with the original hotel bar (not stocked !), a log burner and a selection of musical equipment and karaoke machine. Dogs welcome and are likely to enjoy the underfloor heating. There is also a large games room with table tennis, pool table, darts board, lots of toys and board games etc. All the bedrooms are to a high standard, two four posters, each bedroom has a different fun themes to add interest to your stay. More information about the house will be provided when booked. The Isle of Bute is easily accessible by a short Ferry. Good transport links from Glasgow and Glasgow Airport. Most weekends are £2,250 Week bookings are £3,500 in July and August, Christmas and New Year. All other weeks are £3,000. Monday afternoon to Friday Morning £1,500 (excluding school holiday periods and June, July and August) Week bookings are from Friday to Friday or Monday to Monday. Only week bookings in July and August, no weekend bookings.
St Blanes House is located in the small village of Kilchattan Bay, it has a glorious sweeping sandy beach where children and dogs can run freely. It has a post office and a pub with good food, one mile away,( they run a free courtesy mini bus). Isle of Bute has been named as one of National Geographics 'Top10' global adventure trips. There are many breathtaking scenic walks, the West Island Way Walks starts in the same village and the Kelspoke trail meanders behind the house over the heather covered hills. A few miles away is the island's main town of Rothesay, a traditional Victorian seaside resort which has managed to maintain its grand architecture. The island attracts many annual festivals including the Jazz Festival in May, T in the Port in June, ButeFest, for music and food in July, the Bute Highland Games in August, the Baird festival of flight, in September to mark the first "All Scottish, heavier than air, powered flight in 1910", just a few years after the Wright brothers first flight in France. At the North end of The Isle of Bute is a wee car ferry that provides easy access to the Cowal Peninsular and another way onto the mainland for those wishing to explore the highlands of Scotland.
  • Great place!

  • Myself and a large group of friends had an absolutely fantastic weekend celebrating a friends stag over at Helen's place. We couldn't quite believe just how good it was. The highlights were the bar/music room and the games room! Lots of fun and games to be had over there and all the rooms were incredibly comfortable, especially the white room. Can't recommend this property enough and looking forward to visiting again! Bill

  • St Blanes house is a spectacular, special place for families and groups to come together. we went with family and a few friends for a holiday and very small, informal wedding. The photos don't do justice to how stunning this house and its location is. Everyone in our group loved their stay, we are already talking about when we can come again. We all have wonderful memories of our stay. The host was very helpful and left a lovely hamper and card for our arrival, and even decorations for our celebrations. The house is spotless, the themed rooms are fun and the whole house is very well stocked with everything you could need. Very well planned for children and dogs - comfortable dog room they were happy in, safe enclosed garden, well stocked playroom for the kids. Everything is very clearly explained and labelled making it easy to find your way around this large home. A fabulous stay, we hope to be back soon.

  • This is a great house to celebrate a special occasion. The house is very well equipped with everything you might need. The location is superb with fabulous views and walks. There are toys, games and activities for all ages and a safe garden for children.

  • An awesome house! We loved it and had such a good time..

    Anna2018-03-11T00:00:00Z
  • This is a wonderful house for a large group. Next to the ocean, the bay is calm and neighborhood quiet. Everyone in the area was so nice and happy to see us there. What a friendly place to stay. The pub up the street had a great little private dining room for us all as well. Rented Kayaks in Glasgow at http://www.tiso.com/hire , they worked out great.

    Brian2017-07-07T00:00:00Z
  • The place was very spacious and clean. We loved that every room had a theme and had a lot of fun exploring the place. The dining room meant that we could all eat together at meal times which was lovely and we especially enjoyed the room with the instruments and bar. Couldn't recommend the place more!

  • Having never been to the Isle of Bute before, 24 of us travelled over to St Blane's House for a birthday weekend getaway. The ex-hotel is a stunning building and for the first time ever, the photos don't do it justice. That's not to say the photos aren't incredible, but rather this place is just a dream! It's the perfect location to not only go for stunning, long scenic walks from the front door (we saw dolphins, seals...and submarines), but to then return to the house and party loudly into the early hours without disturbing anybody. What more could you possibly desire. It's also incredibly versatile, although it fit our criteria perfectly and was a brilliant party house, I can imagine it also being a brilliant venue to host work retreats and large family holidays. We could not have asked for more from Helen either. She was very efficient with her communication, a lovely lady to meet (although from what I understand, not everyone gets this pleasure) and had catered for us perfectly! 10/10! If we get the opportunity to come again, we certainly will. I would recommend this to anybody and everybody, but I wouldn't want any competition to have another stay here.

Two private, family friendly rooms in beautiful farmhouse in quiet rural location. Just five minutes drive from Rothesay town and ferry terminal. Perfect spot for connecting to all that Bute has to offer. Located just off the West Island Way its great for walking, cycling, fishing, beaches, golf or just sitting by the wood-burning stove. Includes breakfast.
There are two good sized rooms located upstairs which are set up as one double and one twin so perfect for a young family. This is a small cloakroom upstairs for your own private use and private shower room downstairs. • A wonderful home close to Rothesay. Very stylish living spaces and kitchen which we were given access to. Comfortable, very clean bedrooms, great bathroom. Hosts made us feel very welcome and gave great tips on restaurants and sightseeing.

  • George and Ellen were very welcoming to their lovely farm house home just 5 minutes drive outside Rothesay. Both we're willing to share their knowledge of the area and we enjoyed a different continental style breakfast each morning, which we really enjoyed.

  • A beautiful hidden gem of a home. A quirky farm house 5mins away from the town. Beautiful decor, furniture and art that adds to the experience. Spotlessly clean and everything you could possibly need is all provided including a beautiful continental breakfast. Really lovely couple that really make you feel welcome from the second you arrive. The guest rooms are upstairs and are separate. Rooms are beautifully presented with fresh towels, robes, tea, coffee, biscuits and fresh flowers. Can’t find anything negative to say about our stay with George and Ellen. Bute is a beautiful island to visit and is only 35mins from mainland but you feel a million miles away. So much to see and do on the island.

    Emma2019-07-14T00:00:00Z

  • What a great find! Oonagh was the perfect host, offering great communication, hospitality, stylish, clean and comfortable accommodation. All the little touches made such a difference to us, especially having 2 grandchildren. Situated on Rothesay seafront next to children's corner, we were handy for everything Rothesay has to offer. As we love coming to Bute to escape the humdrum of the mainland, we will certainly be coming back to Oonaghs place. Couldn't have wished for any better. Thank you x
