Places to stay in Ennerdale Bridge
Little Swinside Cottage has an idyllic hillside setting and superb views stretching from the Vale of Lorton to the Scottish mountains. Wonderful walking at all levels, mountain biking in Whinlatter, dog friendly, hot tub available, good wifi, log burner, very peaceful, Keswick 8 miles.
Little Swinside Cottage is one of 3 cottages at High Swinside perched on the slopes of Swinside fell overlooking the peaceful Lorton Valley. The Vale of Lorton is definitely one of the Lake District's hidden gems. Little Swinside is a converted former barn attached to High Swinside Farm. Some of the rooms have lovely oak beams and other original features. The cottage is centrally heated and very snug! On the ground floor of the cottage there is a patio room with its own terrace where you'll find table and chairs for enjoying the view or eating al fresco. The patio room includes a double sofa bed that can be used for a child or friend to sleep in if you wish (for a small extra charge). Most of the rest of the cottage accommodation is upstairs. The double bedroom is beamed and again has lovely views; the bed has a comfortable pocket-sprung mattress. The bathroom with bath and 'shower over' is just next door, while the sitting/dining room and kitchen lie beyond. The sitting room has a comfortable sofa, wood burning stove, tv/dvd, and a dining area looking out into the valley. The galley kitchen is well-equipped with stove, slow cooker, fridge, microwave, mixer. Guests also have access to a washing machine, tumbler drier, and freezer if they need (there is a small charge made for using the tumbler drier).
Lorton is a serene and unspoilt Lakeland valley that has remained largely off the beaten track despite its charm and proximity to Keswick and Cockermouth. The walking is excellent - with open fell access on the high Grasmoor fells behind the house, and beautiful walks at all levels throughout the Vale. See the captions under the photos for more idea of how much there is to do and see here, or if you search 'high swinside diana' you can see more walking and activities information on my site.
  • Highly recommended. Such a lovely welcoming and spotless cottage in beautiful surroundings. Diana is on hand for anything you might need but also respects privacy, perfect host. The views all around the cottage are fabulous. The location is fantastic if you prefer to be away from it all, but still within easy drive of towns and lakes. Despite the strong winds and rain during our stay this did not put us off as we cosied in front of the fire, feeling very safe inside as all the windows are new. Could not fault this cottage.

  • Diana’s place is very comfortable and cosy , easy to find in a lovely part of the quieter area of the Lakes . The cottage had everything we needed and Diana was very helpful and friendly. The cottage is very clean and spacious. The hot tub is an added bonus worth requesting when you book with beautiful views over the valley . Diana was very attentive in ensuring the hot tub was ready for us when we returned in the afternoon.

  • We had a fantastic stay at Diana's cottage in High Swinside. We visited nearby villages, enjoyed some pub lunches and went on a few walks to take in the scenery. Our favourite was our walk around the very scenic Buttermere Lake. Diana made us feel so welcome and was extremely accomodating throughout our stay. The hot tub is a lovely addition- very relaxing and enjoyable even in the drizzly British weather!

  • Lovely weekend, great views and Diana was very attentive and was there when/if we needed anything

  • Diana’s cottage is lovely! The remote location, stunning views and wonderful hospitality really made our stay special. The cottage is wonderfully equipped, super cosy with the log burner & is the perfect place to relax, unwind & enjoy some of Cumbria’s wonderful walks & scenery. Our dog loved his stay just as much as we did. Diana has thought of everything! The hot tub is an added bonus. We cannot wait to return! Highly recommend this little gem.

  • My time at high swinside was beautiful, the house was so so cosy and the views were breathtaking, even in the rain!! The pictures really don’t do it justice. Location was amazing and Diana was wonderfully helpful and kind. Will 100% be returning and recommending to friends. The location was peaceful and private with not a car in sight and you could fully relax in the hot tub gazing at the surrounding mountains and hills. There is plenty of beautiful walks close by and Diana was very helpful in recommending some. A unique aspect I really liked was that It was so eco-friendly with the recycling and compost stations. The cottage was toasty and had everything you could need and even Netflix to sign into!! Five stars do not do the place justice.

  • Had a wonderful 2 nights stay. My only regret was I didn’t book for longer, which I will next time. Superb views, and walks from the cottage, which was so well equipped with everything we needed. Would highly recommend. Thank you Diana

We are located on the edge of the Lake District National Park, within easy driving distance of both the historic towns of Cockermouth and Keswick, and also the stunning Solway Coast.
In addition to our five fully serviced caravan pitches, we have a popular camping pod here in our pretty gardens and caravan site on the edge of the Lake District, Cumbria. Add a touch of glamping to your break away. Enjoy your holiday or short break in our camping pod, which has so many advantages over traditional camping, and is ready for you to move in to! No fighting with canvas, and plenty of mod cons to enhance your time away. All you need to bring is towels and bedding!
Just a couple of miles from Greysouthen, you will find the historic town of Cockermouth. It is famed for its large number of small independent shops selling antiques, books, speciality foods and more. It has a fantastic selection of restaurants & coffee shops, and is also home to Jennings Brewery, the Kirkgate Arts Centre and the Taste Cumbria Food Festival. A little further on the A66 (about 20 minutes' drive) you'll find the adventure Capital – Keswick. There are too many treasures to mention around the Lake District, but you are in close proximity to many of the finest lakes such as Bassenthwaite, Crummock, Loweswater, Buttermere and Derwentwater. Mountain biking is available in Whinlatter Forest (England's only true mountain forest!), as well as Go Ape. Whether you are in to walking, biking, fishing, riding, or just wandering around the area, you will find plenty to do!
  • A perfect place to stay. Everything you need in a cosy pod. 5*, can't wait to go again.

  • Lovely little camping pod in a great location! We enjoyed our stay despite storm Denis stopping us getting out and doing the things we had planned! Would definitely recommend this place!

  • This camping pod is cozy and perfect for those who want to pare down, escape the hustle and bustle of life and just live simply. The views are beautifully serene and we were toasty and warm, thanks to the big heater our hosts provided. We welcomed in the New Year in this little pod and had a wonderful time reminding ourselves that there really isn't a lot we need to be happy. A must-stay! Thank you to our hosts for everything.

A whole self catering house to yourself within 30min (by car) to the heart of the Lake District for less than a hotel room in the Lakes. Right on the coast too! This is not a hotel or serviced BnB! Not in a car? ....Not to worry, bus stop is just outside the house and train station is 10 mins walk away :) All public transport journeys are approx x2 car journey times. Note: Although this house can comfortably sleep 6, i would not suggest 6 adults unless for very short stay due to living space.
Parking: Free on street parking outside of the house. This is 2 bedroomed house made into 3 bedrooms as no one ever used the other reception room! One bedroom is downstairs consisting of a bunk bed with double at bottom and single on top. This is at the front of the house and is therefore subject to traffic noise of a residential area - as is the master bedroom upstairs, but the house is double glazed so not very noisy. One single and one double bedroom upstairs. It is fully kitted out with all you will need, including WiFi. Of course you need to bring your own devices and use your own data package if you really want! There is a TV in the lounge. The house is well maintained and all the furniture is comfortable and functional. Not everything matches however! Some guests take exception to this - but this house is what it is. The pictures give an accurate overview of the house and it's contents. Damage has been done to items in the house over the time that I have been running it under Airbnb - and I update items as I see fit/need to due to damage/can afford to. The most damage is to carpets - which unfortunately are not cheap to replace! However, they are still clean and completely functional.
Harrington is a little village on the edge of Workington. It has it's own little community and a great set of shops for such a small place and a couple of pubs. Asda 10 mins walk one way or 5 mins the other is a post office, convenience store, butchers, green grocers, pharmacy, pie shop and hairdressers. There are a couple of pubs in walking distance and 2 takeaways too. The best place to grab a great pub meal is 10 min walk away at the Brewery House hotel ((SENSITIVE CONTENTS HIDDEN) it!)
  • Spot-on place great value for money clean tidy everything you need close to amenities good communication would definitely stay again and recommend to others

    Sophie2020-02-23T00:00:00Z
  • Jenny’s place was very easy to get to, near plenty of amenities and attractions. The house was neat and clean. There were also a few board games that my family and I get to enjoy in the evening, we especially love those. Jenny left lots of leaflets and a set of instructions so that we are equipped for our stay. You can also see the ocean around the house, definitely worth visiting!

If you are looking to get away from it all, and enjoy some amazing views and peace and quiet, then look no further. Set in its own little corner on our 300 acre farm, the hut enjoys spectacular views from the sun rising over the fells to it setting in the Solway coast. The lack of light pollution makes it an excellent place for stargazing. Don’t let the colder months put you off, with warm fleecy bedding, and log burner, you’ll be super cosy
The hut is very simplistic; think olden days (with a present day twist). It has a comfy double bed, a table and stools for meals looking out at the fells, and a lovely wood burner for those chilly, winter evenings. A short walk across the field will bring you to our newly renovated shower block. Aptly named “The Wash House”, in olden days it was used as a place to wash the milk and butter churns, and do the laundry. Today it has toasty under floor heating, a nice hot electric shower and changing area, a sink and a washing machine, and drying racks for those waterproofs to dry out on overnight. An iron, ironing board and hair dryer are provided to get ready for a good night out in the local towns, or pubs and restaurants . Towels can be provided, or you may wish to bring your own. There is also a separate door leading into the toilet, with an additional sink. An outside tap allows you to wash off muddy gear before hanging it to dry. The hut sits in its own little fenced off area, with an outside bistro set, mains water tap, and fire basket. Perfect for sunset dining, or roasting marshmallows under the stars. Going inside the hut, you will find it cosy and well equipped with everything you should need during your stay. There's a camping stove, pans, plates, cups, glasses, cutlery, all important corkscrew and bedding is provided. There are lights and a charging station for phones and ipads which are run by the solar panel. In case of rainy nights, there is a camping toilet under the bed for convenience. Just bring your clothes and food (and wellies!)
Situated on the outskirts of the quiet, picturesque, farming village of Branthwaite. Ideally located for exploring the coast and the lakes, and within a 30 minute drive radius are the towns of Whitehaven, Workington, Maryport, Cockermouth and Keswick, lakes, fells, forests and the beach! The Wild Duck pub is a 20 minute stroll away from the hut (or a two minute drive) or the equally lovely Royal Yew pub in Dean is just over a mile away.
  • Had a wonderful stay here. Beckie was so helpful with instructions to the property. The hut was so cute and amazing! Really great way to get some peace and quiet!

  • The perfect cozy weekend getaway, even in the middle of storm Dennis. Would definitely recommend!

    Will2020-02-23T00:00:00Z
  • A lovely welcome and a lovely place. Clean and tidy with everything you need. Views are amazing and you would get great sunsets. Couldn’t stay long due to storm Denis but a braver person may be able to stick it out! In normal weather eg not gale force winds, this would be a fantastic place.

  • We had a lovely stay, the hut was super cosy. It was the perfect escape. You had everything you needed for a great adventure.

    Alicia2020-02-16T00:00:00Z
  • We had such a lovely relaxing time in the hut, the setting was a perfect way to escape from our busy working life. Lighting the log burner on a cold wet night was a highlight. The attention to detail is amazing with everything you need plus those little extras. Our dog Paddy loved exploring the fields and we enjoyed a lovely meal at the local pub - The Yew, the food was fabulous. I will be recommending to all my friends and family and plan to return in the spring. Thank you for having us.

    Holly2020-01-17T00:00:00Z
  • A really lovely little place to stay! We certainly weren't blessed with good weather, but what better than a cosy cabin with a roaring wood-burner on a cold night? Thank you for a lovely stay.

    Adrian2020-01-07T00:00:00Z
  • A unique experience in the heart of the Lake District! Fantastic use of space, with all the finishing touches. We were really impressed with the personal touches - from hot water bottles, to candles, to cookies & wine! Thanks Beckie for a wonderful trip.

This house was built for a local iron ore mine in the 1890s. It looks out towards Ennerdale valley, in the Lake District Park, and a short path to the C2C cycleway. The location is quiet, with passing traffic for the farm only. Two double rooms, one with twin beds, are available, with a separate sitting room, with TV, for guests. It is a 10 minute walk to the centre of the village and frequent buses to Whitehaven, on the coast. Well situated for walking, cycling or business in West Cumbria.
Frizington is one of many villages in the west of Cumbria that thrived in the late 1800s and 1900s due to the rich mineral sources. Winder Gate is half a mile from the main village and was built as workers houses for Margaret Mine. From here it is a few miles into the National Park, but the roundabout road route takes 15-20 minutes, heading to the nearest valley, Ennerdale, and Ennerdale Lake, seven miles to walk around. South is Wasdale, where you can see the view voted the best in the country, looking up Wast Water, the deepest lake, towards the highest mountain in England and the smallest church. Nearby Eskdale has a steep windy route to the other side of the Lakes past a Roman hill fort. In Eskdale the Ravenglass and Eskdale Railway runs small narrow-guage trains from the coast into the hills. In the other direction are the more visited Loweswater, Crummock and Buttermere valleys, on the way towards Keswick, a bustling market town.
  • A lovely house and Diana is very welcoming. The house is warm, the bed is comfortable - excellent value for money!

Cheaper than a bunk in a hostel! - An Airbnb in the spirit of the early days, rather than the traditional British B&B. For more details of the house & area, see my main listing "5 miles west of Lake District (1), near Whitehaven" Bikes can be stored in the house, or garage or garden. Budget Brewer's Fayre restaurant about a mile away at Howgate. • The cottage is in an ideal location to explore the lake district, and there is a lovely public footpath very close by too. The room is large and clean with a comfy bed, lots of plug sockets and a desk. The bathroom is clean and has a bath and shower. Helen welcomes other dogs, her collie Ben the dog is really sweet but wary of other dogs, however this wasn't a issue as I kept my dog in the large room for the night I stayed. Very good value!

Clean and comfortable annex to my house. Totally separate access. This is in the west Lake District. 5 mins from the town of whitehaven. This accommodation is particularly good for cyclists wishing to do the coast to coast ride. We are a five minute ride to the beginning of the track. We offer secure lock up for cycles in the conservatory attached to the annex. Will accommodate 2 people (double bed)
  • Regularly use Marie’s place for work and always enjoy staying here!

  • comfortable and convenient base for exploring the area, very good value accommodation

    Elizabeth2019-10-14T00:00:00Z
  • I wasn’t really sure what to expect here. We needed somewhere to spend a night in Whitehaven prior to attempting to cycle the Coast to Coast, and the price was right. I was delighted with what I found. Access is to the rear of a large semi detached house on an ordinary street, up a couple to steps into a small conservatory which leads into the lounge/kitchen. There’s loads of room for two to sit in comfort, and the kitchenette has all the basics. We heated a ready meal in the microwave and used the same for our porridge in the morning. The accommodation has its own staircase leading to the bedroom and shower room. All well equipped and clean. Sometimes your heart sinks a bit in B&B places when you come across a laminated notice, but when it says “Please help yourself to extra towels” it’s rather lovely. Although we didn’t meet her, our host could not have been more obliging and I’d happily recommend this place, especially as a really good value stop over before an epic cycling trip.

    Neil2019-09-23T00:00:00Z
  • Perfect location and base to explore the local area and to start the c2c cycle. Being able to store the bikes in the conservatory was a massive bonus (and one of the many reasons we booked). Marie was a great host! Thoroughly recommended by us.

    Andrew2019-09-22T00:00:00Z
  • Marie was so helpful right from the word go, especially with restaurant recommendations! The annexe was lovely and very clean! We found the local menus and attraction brochures a great touch. In all, we had a great stay and hope to return!

We are in the tranquil Western Lake District National Park close to the Coast to Coast bike route and with plenty of walking right from the door. Your comfortable ensuite bedroom and own breakfast / sitting room is upstairs so has gorgeous views across to woods and fells. The bedroom can be set up as two singles or one kingsize bed. We can provide a delicious basket of local and home-made food for a help-yourself- breakfast for £5 per person. There is parking and a garage for storing bikes.
The Lake District National Park was granted UNESCO World Heritage Status in 2017 and your accommodation makes an ideal base for exploring north-west Cumbria, or a peaceful location for a quiet retreat. Inside: Our front hallway has racks for shoes and boots - no outdoor shoes upstairs please. The shared stairs leads up to your rooms on the left and has its own lockable door. The bedroom has a comfortable kingsize bed or can be set as 2 singles which will be made up with fresh bedding . Towels are provided in the ensuite shower room along with shampoo and soap. The adjoining private breakfast and sitting room is well equipped having a fridge , toaster, kettle, microwave and a mini hob. There is a cafetière, crockery & cutlery, utensils and pans, plenty of storage space, tea, coffee and milk. If we've been making flapjack, you'll find some in the tin! There’s free Wi-fi, and there are plenty of local area maps, guides, books and board games for you to borrow during your stay. No TV! Phone reception is patchy, but can usually be found a few metres walk up the drive, depending on network. You can use our utility area downstairs which has a washer (washing powder provided), iron & ironing board, hanging space for drying clothes for and muddy walking boots and shoes. There is space in the garage for bikes and electric bikes can be charged overnight. Please note: Smoking / vaping is not permitted inside. Outside: I am slowly creating a wildlife friendly fruit and veg garden and in the surrounding fields, fells and woodland you may see deer, hares, red squirrels, foxes, hedgehogs, rabbits and a wide variety of bird life. The woods behind the cottage are home to woodpeckers, cuckoo and owls. In the spring and summer you will see the local farmers’ lambs and calves grazing in the fields. We face west and you are welcome to sit outside on our patio area and soak up the rays or watch the sun go down in the evening.
Water Board Cottages are in a beautiful rural location. 15 minutes walk will take you through quiet woods to the shores of Crummock Water with level walks round both sides and crystal clear water for wild swimming! Several of the Western Wainwright fells can be climbed from the door and Buttermere valley with it's lake, local icecream and popular village is 15 minute drive away. The Slate mine at Honister Pass is an exciting excursion and the pass gives access to the Borrowdale valley and Keswick. The C2C Cycleway and the Lakes Loop is 2 minutes away and there is a choice of gentle valley circuits or challenging mountain passes for keen cyclists. Whinlatter Forest Centre (10 mins drive) has a variety of mountain bike routes, wildlife walking routes and cafe. Our local award winning pub, The Kirkstile Inn is 15mins walk up the valley. It has great food and you will usually need to book to be sure of a table. Down the valley 2 miles in Low Lorton is The Wheatsheaf also popular for food in the summer. The nearest shop for basics / emergency supplies is 2 miles down the valley at our favourite Lorton Village Shop ( 9am -5pm, closed Sunday). There are larger supermarkets (Sainsbury’s, Aldi, Lidl - open: Mon to Sat, 8 - 8. Sun, 10 - 4) and independent bakers, greengrocers, butchers, fishmongers etc in Cockermouth. The nearest garage is on the A66 / A5086 roundabout, on the outskirts of Cockermouth. Nearest fast charge point for electric cars is Booths at Keswick. Ask us about charging overnight.
  • A fabulously comfy space with lots of lovely touches, including the scrumptious flapjack! Set in a wonderful location with great walks from the door and only 15 minutes walk from a great pub. • Debbie and Graham's place is perfect in each sense. The location is splendid with views the the mountains right from the bedroom window. The place has all the amenities you could ask for for your stay and that makes it all the more special. It is one of those places where you could visit and disconnect from the world (if you so wish to). Debbie and Graham are lovely hosts. They are so easy to talk to. They made the check in and check out process a breeze. Also, one of the best parts were Debbie's flapjacks. Delicious in each bite. We would definitely stay there again.

Comfortable bedroom with double bed in cosy family cottage. We are in the Western Lake District. The cottage is a short drive from Wasdale & Ennerdale which provides excellent fell walking opportunities, we're a good base for Scafell Pike. We are 1/4 mile from the village with its shops, pubs & restaurants. The cottage is next door to the Red Admiral Pub, 3 miles from Seascale train station and the beach. Paul & Lucy offer a warm friendly welcome, we provide free wi-fi and breakfast.
Most days you can see Scafell Pike from the bedroom window and our friendly runner ducks in the garden. The room is fresh and clean, recently decorated and with a new radiator. The bathroom next door has a wonderful rain shower which our guests have really appreciated , especially after a day walking or cycling on the fells.
Gosforth is our village. It has a vibrant public hall with regular events - see website for details. The pubs provide good pub grub and we especially like the Wild olive for Italian food. We have a folder in the guest room with more details on restaurants/pubs/shops/churches/health centres etc
  • Great local knowledge, and great hospitality. The fresh bread and the ducks were a highlight! See you again!

My place, built in 1830, can be seen on the left of the main picture. It is close to Wainwrights Coast to Coast Walk, the sea, public transport, a brilliant fish & chip shop and a local store. You’ll love my place because you're close to coastal walks and sites of historical interest such as the industrial heritage sites of Whitehaven. The lake District National Park is within a few miles and the sunsets from my house are stunning..
Built in 1830 as housing for workers at the local mines. This cosy little house has views over the sea to Scotland from the front and at the back there's an open green grassy space with ample parking.
My home is a small terraced house, built in the 1830's near the cliff top, as a home for the workers in the local mines. It was owned for many generations by the same family and you can still see where they have carved their initials in the red sandstone surrounds of the rear entrance to my home. The area has a rich history in mining coal, anhydrite and iron ore and if you wish to go looking around the cliff top path, you will find many remains of the fascinating industrial history.
  • Whole experience has been top notch.Janet met me at whitehaven station as i had travelled up by train. She even took me shopping to a spar on the way (that had toilet roll!) .Dropped me at the cottage...showed me round and then left me to it. Cottage is lovely.Has everything you need. Its very comfortable and homely. The area surrounding it is stunning.if you like walking by the sea then come here. Thanks Janet.i hope to be back soon

  • Clean, comfortable, cosy and quiet, couldn5 ask for more. Janet even went out of her way to meet us at the theatre to hand over the keys as out journey took longer than it should so we would have been late otherwise. Perfect.

  • Janet is a wonderful friendly host and does everything she can to help. We were allowed to leave belongings over the weekend despite only booking in for the working week which was very kind and an unexpected extra.

    Jessica2020-02-14T00:00:00Z
  • Janet's place is located in a great location, in whitehaven. Stunning views over the sea and despite the bad weather we took our dog Coco for a lovely walk to Haig Mine and down to Whitehaven... just a 15 to 20 minute walk along the coast from Janet's cottage. The place itself was spotlessly clean, and very cosy... Janet even provided milk, tea, hot chocolate and coffee for our arrival. The chip shop around the corner was also a bonus! Janet's place was very special place, and great value!! We will definately be going back we felt very relaxed and at home here. If you're looking for somewhere to stay in Whitehaven, please consider here.

  • This is my third stay with Maria - which tells you what a nice place it is. Warm and dry when it's cold and wet outside, plenty of space, no problems, and a TripAdvisor 5* rated pub opposite and take-away just down the street.

Preferably looking for tenants who are working in the area, that are looking to rent a bedroom on a weekly basis. There are four separate double bedrooms in this house available to rent. There will be an discounted price for long term renters, which is inclusive of all bills.
This is a modern terrace town house located in the heart of Whitehaven. Private room with double bed and shared access to the living areas and bathrooms. Perfectly located for the coast to coast riders, contractors working in the area, Sellafield, Albion Square & West Lakes workers.
  • Gary was a lovely host and communicated very well with me. The apartment is a bit noisy, but this has been raised with Gary and he assured me that it would be sorted soon!

    Jodie2020-03-03T00:00:00Z
  • Nice place to stay, close to services & amenities. Warm & cosy. Washing & dryer are free of charge to use, excellent for long stays!

    Susy2019-11-29T00:00:00Z
  • This is a two bedroom flat with each room let out separately. It is in a fantastic location, right in the centre of Whitehaven, and consists of a large kitchen/diner/ lounge, separate toilet and shower, and the two bedrooms. It is up a flight of stairs but that leaves room for the wine bar downstairs. It's kept clean and tidy, and the facilities (cooker, oven, microwave and so on) are just right. Gary is a very helpful host. He's available to show how the central heading works, and tell me what's going on, and provides resident parking permits to allow you to park - but don't be misled, it's difficult to park in central Whitehaven unless you take the paid parking elsewhere (having said that, the All Day Car Park is only round the corner and very convenient for the usual places of work like Albion Square). I'm booking in regularly now because of its convenient location.

    Hugo2019-10-31T00:00:00Z
  • I was staying in Whitehaven for work and when I stumbled across this property, I thought that it was perfect - and it was! Very clean and perfectly situated near local amenities, the town centre and, of course, the beautiful Lake District. Gary was and is a friendly host who couldn't have been more helpful and attentive to my questions and needs. I highly recommend this property to anyone needing a cosy place to rest their head on the West coast!

The Vale of Lorton is one of the most beautiful and unspoilt areas of the Lakes, ranging from the flat farmland and Gem town of Cockermouth at one end to the rugged mountains and Buttermere at the other. The tranquil setting of The Spinney, above the River Cocker, with spectacular views over to Whinlatter, is an ideal location to explore the north western fells, lakes, towns and coast. In two acres of mature trees, gardens and river frontage, there’s an abundance of wildlife all year round.
The Spinney, a self-contained cottage style annexe of the main house, together form a 200 year old property built into the fellside above the River Cocker. The house was originally a painting house for a local artist. Through the stone pillars down the gravel drive, a private parking area for The Spinney is adjacent to the property. A few stone steps down to the south facing French doors is where you enter into the open plan living/dining space – the kitchen with its lovely window seat and the relaxing seating area with the original sandstone fireplace and wood burning stove. Up the stairs off the landing there’s a double bedroom with king-size bed and beautiful views across the valley. A split level bathroom and single bedroom complete the upstairs area. The gardens have colour across the seasons. In spring there are thousands of daffodils and bluebells to complement the rhododendrons and azaleas with other colourful blooms flowering throughout the year. During the day there’s invariably something going on in terms of gardening, renovation or general maintenance but we try to be discrete. Red squirrels, hares, and deer are regularly seen along with a plethora of garden birds, pheasants, buzzards, ducks and herons. Away from the hustle and bustle of everyday life, you can hear the birds sing, the breeze in the trees, the sheep murmuring and the river gurgling where you can fish or just sit in peaceful seclusion.
Gateway to the north western Lake District, Lorton has a village shop with excellent coffee, essentials and craft gifts. There's a pub and a thriving village hall with different activities most days. There's two all weather tennis courts and we're on a C2C route.

A hidden gem in the lake district national park, on site pub, static caravan site, pod, walking, fishing, climbing, all out door pursuits.
    Sorry strictly no pets!
This is possibly the quietest hidden vally in the western lake district once you have visited the area you will return Keswisk...8 miles Buttermere...8 miles Borrowdale...12 miles
  • Three bedrooms and one huge living room with attached kitchen, this place would be great for a big family or a couple of families' get-away in the most beautiful part of the Lakes District. (A bit too big for just two people this time.)

    Zoe2019-12-26T00:00:00Z
  • This is great apartment in a small village in a beautiful area. It was bigger than I thought it would be yet extremely cozy and well decorated and set up. The pub downstairs is very good, with great food. The mulled cider was perfect for a December night. I very happily ate their every night. It should be noted that although it is above the pub, noise is not really an issue. You can maybe hear some voices during the evening but nothing too loud or disturbing, I was fast asleep by 9pm both nights in the super comfy bed. 😊 I’ll be very happy to book here again the next time I’m hiking in the area.

  • Spacious accommodation over a great pub - superb beer and food. Excellent hosts - well equipped flat with very comfy beds. Brilliant location in one of the best valleys in the Lakes. Highly recommended.

  • Stayed 2 nights at Mark's place for a friends wedding. It was in a perfect location very close to the venue. Had an excellent meal in the pub downstairs and would definitely stay here again.

  • Great place for holiday and the location is perfect for visitors willing to enjoy nature. The pub also provides excellent food which is a real bonus.

    Laurence2019-04-30T00:00:00Z
  • This place is just perfect for a walking holiday in the Lake District. A short drive from all the top destinations such as Catbells and Castlerigg Stone Circle, with convenient parking on site. The pub is friendly and welcoming, with its own beer and a great food menu including veggie/vegan options. You also get use of a private back entrance. The flat is very spacious and beautiful traditional English, nice and warm and well insulated from the pub downstairs (you can hear mumbled conversations until 10pm, then it's silent). There's a full kitchen, very well equipped. The bathroom is slightly separate but private and I really appreciated a piping hot bath after a day of hill climbing. Overall, a great deal! The perfect place to really stretch out and enjoy yourself even for longer periods. DEFINITELY recommend it for families and groups.

The house was built c1880 at Crossgates, Lamplugh in a countryside location yet close to all main routes; gives easy access to all NW Lakes for walking and biking. On the boundary of the National Park and 6 miles south of pretty market town Cockermouth. Three miles from Loweswater, and a stone's throw to Ennerdale. Crummock Water & Buttermere a short drive away; also great access to coast. A cosy and comfortable home in an ideal spot, providing a super base for your NW Lake District experience.
A comfortable and warm, self-contained terraced house which sleeps four people. Tidy and clean, providing accommodation for those wishing to explore the secret North West Lakes. Very easy access from A5086. Entrance hall leading to lounge with seating and electric fire. Television. Free Wifi access with decent speed; due to our location some mobile phone networks can receive patchy reception here. The main source of heating in the house is storage heating which keeps the house warm and cosy. Ready supply of hot water. Leading to kitchen with electric oven and hob, microwave oven, washing machine, fridge and table with chairs. Kettle, toaster, crockery, cutlery etc. Iron and ironing board provided. Bedroom one has a double bed with wardrobe and drawers, bedroom two has bunk beds and wardrobe. Bedding is provided. Bathroom with electric shower and bath. Towels are provided. The steps to the first floor are pretty steep, maybe not very suitable for elderly visitors and tiny children. Please take care on the stairs. Space for several bicycles to be kept secure in the long entrance hallway. There’s no electric laundry dryer at the house, however there is a Sheila Maid in the hallway.
A lovely countryside location conveniently close to a main arterial route and right at the entrance to The Lake District National Park, England's greatest adventure playground. From the house you have easy access into The NW Lakes, Loweswater, Crummock Lake, Buttermere & Ennerdale. There is plenty of low-level walking too around these parts if you do not fancy the fells and mountains. Cogra Moss is only a mile away, a super walk around the old reservoir...approx 3 miles in distance. Trout fishing available here too, buy your day permit at Inglewood camp site in the village during season April-October. Walk around Loweswater Lake, through Holme Wood where there is a small pebble beach and private bothy. The bluebells are lovely here in May; if you're lucky you may spot a red squirrel. From here to Loweswater village where you can find the famous Kirkstile Inn which serves lovely food and locally brewed ales. Crummock Water follows next where you can find next to Brackenthwaite How the Rannerdale Knott bluebells again flowering during May. From here you can travel to Buttermere Lake and village; a flat walk around the whole lake is 5 miles and good for adults and children alike. There is a good tea shop here serving snacks and home-made ice-cream. From here on to Keswick via either Newlands Pass or Honister Pass. If you choose to go via Honister then be sure to call at the Honister Slate mines. Keswick is a popular tourist town and has a market on Thursday and Saturday. Derwentwater is good for boating, the parks are delightful for children with pitch and putt, grass tennis courts, bowling and lovely play area. The newly re-furbished museum is worth checking out and the swimming spa is great for children and adults alike on a wet day. There is a theatre and cinema as well; plenty of places to eat and Booth's supermarket. From here you can travel via Whinlatter Pass where there is a visitor's centre with Go Ape, forest trails, and biking. The Lake District Wildlife Park (next to Armathwaite Hall) at Bassenthwaite is a fun day out; and whilst there why not go and see the wild ospreys or visit the new Lakes Distillery at Setmurthy, Bassenthwaite. Cockermouth is an historic market town, Wordsworth House is a must see attraction; William Wordsworth was born and grew up here. There are many bars and restaurants here, plus lots of independant shops. The Solway Coast approx 10 miles North West is an Area of Outstanding Natural Beauty and has a very pretty coastline. The village of Allonby and slightly further along the coast, town of Silloth are worth a visit; you often find that the weather is better along the coast if it is a little wet inland. Children may like to visit Stanwix Park at Silloth for swimming and entertainment, you can purchase a day pass. St Bees with it's fine beach (and Hartley's ice-cream shop!), historic Roman port Ravenglass & Muncaster Castle Owl Sanctuary further down our pretty Cumbrian coastline should also be on your itinerary; the Ratty Railway at Eskdale cannot be missed. This trip takes you from Ravenglass to Boot on a narrow gauge railway and is certain to make your holiday! The little trains run several times a day and you can just turn up at the station for a ticket. Closer to home is Bradley's Riding Centre at Kinniside Nr Ennerdale Bridge O/S ref 056144 where you can have half hour or full day treks on their magnificent fell ponies accompanied by instructors. Ennerdale Lake has forest walks and mountain biking, and is only 3 miles from the cottage. There are 2 or 3 pubs in Ennerdale Bridge village to choose from: The Fox & Hounds and Shepherds Arms, both good food. The newly opened visitors centre at Ennerdale Bridge offers a small shop and cafe (3 miles). The National Park here is known as Wild Ennerdale, being allowed to develop with as little interference as possible from farming and man. If you are not exhausted by all of this, then head North to our historic city Carlisle (40 mins away by car) where you can see the famous castle, great shopping, and Hadrian's Wall. Walby Farm Park, Carlisle is a super day out for children-best UK farm park 2015.
  • Basic but well equipped little cottage in a good location for days out.

  • Jo's place was a cosy retreat from the wild Cumbrian weather! It had everything we needed for our stay - a lovely kitchen, a hot shower, comfy beds... Jo was the perfect host - so kind to us and very accommodating. I would recommend her place for anyone exploring the west coast - the gem of Ennerdale (home to beautiful scenery and darks skies) is on your doorstep, and the crowds of the central Lakes are far away. Give Keswick a miss - you won't regret it!

  • This was a cosy warm home perfect for families and couples. It’s a two bed home, second bedroom has bunk beds for kids, good bathroom, living room with large tv and games and books, good kitchen with all the necessities. The location of the property is in a great location with a 15 minute drive to the beautiful Ennerdale Water, Lidl and Sainsbury’s around 10 minutes drive, very nice area for exploring. A small, stunning lodge set in a private, wooded, estate nestled on the fringes of the Lake District and just 10 minutes drive from the Coast. It is the perfect weekend retreat, after a day out exploring our National Park, you can come back to the lodge and relax in our outdoor hot tub (for a small fee) or light the fire pit in your own private space and enjoy the peace and tranquility that Rheda has to offer. Alternatively, pop down to one of our locals for a traditional Cumbrian meal.
The lodge is fully modernised for your convenience. We have free wifi, a large screen digital television, the latest coffee machine serving fresh coffee and latte's and a fridge to keep those beverages cold. A BBQ is available for use in your own private rear garden. There will be an additional charge of £25 for exclusive use of the hot tub, bookable in advance. This fee includes luxury robes and towels. Please ensure you bring suitable footwear such as flipflops to ensure that your feet are kept clean prior to entering the hot tub.
The lodge is set in our garden in a private wooded estate. Red squirrels and roe deer are regular visitors to the estate and the woods are abundant with lots of bird species too. As evening approaches you can sit and watch as the pipistrelle bats leave their roosts to feed on insects. As this is a private estate, there are few cars and therefore less noise. There is no street light pollution so on a clear night you get a beautiful view of the starlit sky.
  • Thanks to Vanessa and Andy for a wonderful relaxing stay in the Lake District. The lodge was compact yet perfectly formed and kitted out with more than expected. We were worried we'd get cold in there facing stormy wintery weather, but we were toasty warm using the heater and winter duvet on the comfy sofa bed. The lodge was absolutely spotless with great access to a private courtyard to the rear and a few steps to the hot tub at the front. Plastic glasses at the ready and adorable homemade cupcakes our winter hot tub excursion was just brilliant. Nothing was too much trouble for the hosts, Vanessa was just wonderfully welcoming and helpful with local knowledge, takeaway recommendations and kept us fully informed about our stay. Our golden retriever was grateful for the adventures around the large garden to the house and very pleased we were allowed so much freedom with him. If we have a trip planned for the Lakes again we'll definitely come back!

  • Vanesa is great. From the first moment she answered all my questions and concerns. On the day of the arrival she received us to explain all the details of the cabin. The cabin is very cute and has everything you need to spend a couple of days. The hot tub is great and is right in front of the cabin. It is easy to access the beach and lakes. Also, it is a very quiet area where you can relax outside the noise of the city. Our only concerns were the sofa bed that for our taste was a bit uncomfortable and the lack of shower, but Vanesa provided us with the entrance to the shower in her house. Thanks for everything! We will return without a doubt!

    Raquel2020-02-23T00:00:00Z
  • Very clean and well equipped lodge that catered for all of our needs while visiting the lakes. Both Vanessa and Andy were happy to help with any questions or queries which we presented to them. Overall fantastic stay!

  • Lovely little garden lodge, really warm and stylishly done out. Vanessa and her family were exceptionally welcoming and allowed us use of their personal facilities when needed and even invited us to their New Years Eve party which was lovely. Hot Tub is a great little touch and it's a lovely little base to enjoy the splendid scenery of the Lake District xx

The Barn is a beautifully refurbished retreat in a quiet corner of the Lake District National Park. Built in c.1870 as part of How Farm, The Barn is a very comfortable self-contained space which sleeps two adults and two children. It has a small garden, unique open living space incorporating the kitchen and lounge, lobby, shower room and large bedroom. The Barn is in a countryside location yet gives easy access to all the North West Lakes and the lesser known but very scenic West Coast.
Finished to an extremely high standard, The Barn offers peace and tranquility with every modern convenience and is the ideal base for exploring the West Lakes throughout the changing seasons. The layout is all on one level with an open plan living area which incorporates a well equipped kitchen, large sofa and TV; a shower room; a lobby where there is a washer and dryer; and a large bedroom with a king sized bed and a double sofa bed suitable for two children. There is also a small drying area/space for outdoor gear and a lockable bike store. Though The Barn is the ideal place to recharge your batteries the beautiful market town of Cockermouth is only 3 miles drive away and Keswick is 20 minutes drive away. Both have a good variety of shops, cafes, restaurants and bars. The Barn is well placed to access Buttermere, Crummock Water and Ennerdale, to name just a few of the beautiful local attractions and the stunning West Coast. There are plenty of walking, open water swimming, running and cycling opportunities virtually outside the front door. With its high standards of accommodation and superb location, The Barn is perfect for a couple and their well behaved dog(s) to explore all the delights that the Lake District has to offer, whatever the time of year.
A very scenic rural area with amazing views across to Scotland on one side and the mountains of the Lake District on the other side.
  • Lovely Barn, good location and friendly hosts. Spacious accommodation completed to a high standard, both clean and comfortable. Photos don’t do it justice!

  • What a beautiful and peaceful setting. Hazel and Mike were fantastic hosts and they have done such a wonderful job renovating the barn. It was such a relaxing and bigger than expected space. Great location for exploring the Lake District too. Would highly recommend this stay to anyone.

  • We have just returned from a 2 night stay in this lovely barn. From the pictures when booking I knew the barn was going to be lovely but when we arrived we were blown away by how stunning and spacious the barn was. The decor and attention to detail is amazing and I was a little sad we had only booked for 2 nights. I didn’t want to leave. The views are amazing. The barn had everything we needed to cook our meals in the evening it was a real home from home. It was great for our dog too as it had a little garden area to the rear and a lovely walk right outside. There is a handy tiled entrance hall that was prefect for our dog to dry off and sleep. We will be returning for sure to explore more of the Lake District.

  • We had a lovely time at the barn! The attention to detail in the renovation was outstanding and it was probably one of the nicest and well appointed Airbnb’s we have stayed in. It was so warm and cosy with everything we needed for a fantastic stay. Hazel was very helpful especially when we had a lost key issue!! We would recommend this place to anyone - it’s truly fabulous!

    Frances2020-02-09T00:00:00Z
  • The barn was a perfect stay for me and my boyfriend. Perfect kitchen amenities for us to cook one evening and extremely cosy living spaces. Everything was spotless and comfortable - couldn’t have asked for anything better for a relaxing weekend away. Thank you again!!

Separate private bathroom within the loft bedroom, again with plenty of towels and toiletries. • Sally’s loft is like a 5 star hotel. Such a beautiful home and wonderful welcome by a lovely family. You have everything you need at Sally’s loft, it’s is stylish, comfortable and exceptionally clean. Parking was good and there are lots of places to explore on the coastline even if you are just staying over for onward travels. The bed is extremely comfortable, the shower is great and providing breakfast is a nice touch. I would highly recommend Sally’s loft for a one night stay or more.

  • Maria's place was lovely and clean and perfect for my short break. She was most help with communication and me arriving later than planned. The room and bathroom were flawless with the added relaxing bonus of a huge fishtank in the room which was a nice touch! Would stay again and recommend for anyone visiting the area.

  • A really lovely room, warm and comfortable, and very convenient for the Science and Technology Park (only about 2 miles, another advantage is that half of this is away from the traffic). Lovely to come back to after working hard all day . In two nights I enjoyed the chippy (had to stay in for a conference call) and the Globe pub (almost directly opposite). The fish are active if silent - companionable without disturbing anything. Hosts are friendly and helpful if you need them, out of the way if you don't. Very convenient and I'll book again

  • Lovely couple and very accommodating. Great communication and understanding as we we're later than expected when booking in. Maria gave us some recommendations as to where to eat and had a lovely chat with her partner before leaving.

    Catherine2019-09-08T00:00:00Z
  • Clean and comfortable stay, with nice touches in the room, tea, coffee, biscuits... I didn't meet Maria but her partner was there to welcome me. Friendly and helpful.

    Jackie2019-08-19T00:00:00Z
  • Everything was clean and tidy, the budgies in the aviary and the animals in the back garden were a great bonus!

    James2019-08-18T00:00:00Z
  • Perfect short stay, lovely room, great location. Good access to Whitehaven and connecting towns so there’s plenty to do and see on right outside their doorstep.

Church Stile is a family owned and run Caravan Holiday Park nestling on a traditional Herdwick farm, in a truly idyllic location in the heart of Wasdale valley in the Lake District. Situated in the pretty village of Nether Wasdale, the holiday park is located in a traditional Lakeland oak woodland setting on the valley floor. The caravan looks out onto the Screes mountain range which tower above Wastwater only 1 mile away.
The lovely village of Nether Wasdale with its church and 2 country pubs is only a short walk while the village of Gosforth is nearby. England's deepest lake, Wastwater, is less than a mile and just beyond the lake lies England's highest mountain Scafell.
