All about Punta Gorda

North of Fort Myers, along the banks of South Florida's Charlotte Harbor Gulf Island Coast, is a small beachside retreat nestled amongst protected pine flatwoods, marshes, and aquatic reserves. Punta Gorda is a mecca for outdoor enthusiasts, nature lovers, and leisure devotees alike. Surrounding beaches along the Gasparilla Sound, such as the Charlotte Harbor Aquatic Preserve and the sprawling Fred C. Babcock/Cecil M. Webb Wildlife Management Area, provide countless hiking, swimming, kayaking, and wildlife-spotting opportunities.

The town itself is characterized by its iconic canal-laced neighborhoods, with boat ramps and waterfront access leading to each home. In addition to the waterside communities, Punta Gorda's compact downtown area offers a range of seafood restaurants, streetside cafes, and chic bars along its palm-lined waterfront for an evening of food and cold drinks while the sun sets over the vast gulf waters. With many structures and homes dating back to the late 1800s and early 1900s, as well as a botanical and sculpture garden, the historic district offers an alternative to beachside sightseeing.

What are the top things to do in Punta Gorda?

Ponce De Leon Park

Located on the western edge of town, this small seaside park is easy to access from Punta Gorda and has several amenities and activities available. Strolling along the boardwalk, which makes its way along dense mangrove forests, picnic areas, and a fishing pier along the Charlotte Harbor waters, makes a great addition to an afternoon spent lounging and swimming at the park's beaches.

Peace River Botanicals & Sculpture Gardens

Stunning metal sculptures mingle with the palm-laden ecosystems of southwestern Florida in this 30-acre botanical garden along the banks of the Peace River. Artists from around the world have contributed unique pieces to sections of the park that complement various ecological themes like a cactus room, a hibiscus area, and a sensory garden. You can explore the grounds through accessible paths that meander through flower gardens, marshes, and riverfront trees.

Punta Gorda History Park

Located in central Punta Gorda, this nine-acre park hosts several historically significant structures from the surrounding communities dating to the mid-19th-century. Once occupied by some of the town's first residents, a selection of homes and their furnishings have been relocated to the site for preservation purposes — the Quednau – Hindman House, a former mayor's residence, being among the most well maintained. Visitors to the park can explore the grounds’ period-accurate food gardens and the building interiors, as well as take part in community events, such as the weekly farmer's market that is held every Sunday.
