Bask in the Tranquil Courtyard of Bywater Guest House

Enjoy morning coffee on the leafy garden patio of this vibrant, Creole-style cottage nestled on a shady corner lot. Prep a meal within the funky-modern confines of the kitchen or wander the colorful interiors until you find a sunny spot on the couch. If you prefer to sleep in while on vacation, feel free to close all the wooden shutters to form a comfortable, dark cocoon in the bedroom and pretend like the rest of the world has stopped while you relax. When you are ready to get out and about, venture outside to explore the unique architecture of the Bywater and visit local dives and hangouts! This guest house is a creole-style cottage adjacent to a traditional shotgun (occupied by the host) on a shady corner lot in the Bywater Historic District. Originally built in the 1800s, renovated in 2007, and completely refreshed in 2017, guests will enjoy full, private access to this 600+ square foot, 1 bedroom, 1 bath cottage with a fully appointed kitchen. There is a queen bed in the bedroom plus a West Elm modular couch in the living room that comfortably sleeps one adult. Extra linens and pillows are provided. Flat-screen TV with DirecTV and DVD player. Washer/dryer in unit with supplies. Freshly-squeezed grapefruit and satsuma juice from trees in the courtyard, when in season (October - February)! Guests may feel welcome to sit in the courtyard, with a private patio just outside the living room door. We live on-site, and the door to our home is just across the courtyard from the living room or at the deck by your entry door. Should you need anything, we’re happy to be at your service. Otherwise, we'll leave you to the quiet enjoyment of the space and to enjoy your travels. The guest house is situated in the Bywater Historic District, a Creole neighborhood mostly known for its brightly colored architecture and creative community members. The neighborhood boasts easy access to dining and entertainment, and a number of hotspots are nearby including one of the city’s best brunches, a nano-brewery, and a wine bar with live courtyard jazz multiple times a day! The Crescent Park trail along the river is two blocks away and is a nice gateway to the French Quarter. The Crescent Park trail along the Mississippi Riverfront is two blocks from the house and offers easy bike/pedestrian/wheelchair access to the French Market (about 1.5 miles) along with the rest of the French Quarter beyond (Jackson Square is about 2 miles from the house). Multiple bus routes are within 2-4 blocks of the house, including Bus Route 5 two blocks away that takes you to the Quarter. The Rampart-St. Claude Streetcar Route is approximately 1.6 miles away at the intersection of St. Claude and Elysian Fields. Several local businesses offer scooter and bike rentals within a couple miles of the house, and a bike share station (Blue Bikes NOLA) is located around the corner. Uber/Lyft/rideshares are readily available, typically in 5 minutes or less at most times of day, and cost around $7-$12 to the French Quarter/CBD (or Central Business District as we in New Orleans call our downtown), depending upon traffic, time of day, exact dropoff location, etc. If you are driving your own vehicle, apps like "Spothero" will help you find and compare options for private or paid parking lots and spaces at your destination. On-street parking is typically pretty easy to find and no permit is required/no time restrictions exist. J&J's Sports Bar is across the street. While it can be great for watching a game close-by or for a night cap before you hit the sack, depending upon the day, it can also create conversation noise into the wee hours. A white noise machine is provided in the bedroom, in case of sensitive sleepers. City of New Orleans Short-Term License Number/Type/Expiration: 17STR-16097/Accessory STR/16 August 2018

All about French Quarter

Located on the banks of the Mississippi, New Orleans’ stunning French Quarter is not just one of the city’s oldest districts, it’s one of the glories of the South, a picturesque neighborhood that has evoked romance (and bawdier emotions) for centuries. Established in 1718 by French settlers, the Vieux Carré has preserved its 19th-century architecture, dominated by brightly painted houses with wrought-iron balconies and wooden shutters flung open during the day in the hopes of attracting a cooling breeze.

As you wander the cobblestone streets, you’ll want to check out the sprawling Jackson Square at the quarter’s heart, home of the fairy-tale-like St. Louis Cathedral, built in 1789. You can venture down Bourbon Street, where the revelry never seems to stop, or stop in at the very same bar where a US president negotiated with French pirates during the War of 1812 to help him expel the British from the country.

What are the top things to do in French Quarter?

Bourbon Street

As the French Quarter’s main drag, Bourbon Street buzzes with legendary restaurants serving authentic Creole cuisine, famous jazz clubs where the greats have all have played, and packed bars, including America’s first gay bar. The area is a wonderful place to wander during the day, checking out the beautiful 19th-century buildings. When night falls, live music, as well as raucous crowds, spill onto the streets.

Jackson Square

Located in the center of the French Quarter, Jackson Square is ringed with historic buildings, including the beautiful St. Louis Cathedral and the Upper Pontalba Building, a four-story brick Victorian with lacy balconies, considered the first apartment building in the United States. Stop by the Cabildo Museum, the original Spanish city hall, which now houses the Louisiana State Museum. But the square is not just of historic interest. Peruse the work of local artists at the outdoor artist colony or grab a meal at one of the many restaurants.

Mardi Gras Museum of Costumes and Culture

Mardi Gras is New Orleans’ most famous event, and this fascinating museum lets you experience it year-round. The museum takes you through the history of Mardi Gras and showcases some of the elaborate costumes that different krewes have used. You can even try on flamboyant headwear and sparkly outfits to pretend, at least for the sake of photos, you were at the real thing.
