Beyazıt Square is one of the most important political and historical places of Istanbul. It was built by Emperor Theodosius in 393 AD as the largest square in the city. At that time, the square was known as "Form Tauri Square" because of the bronze bull heads on the giant triumphal arch in the middle. While a few marble blocks and column ruins have survived from the triumphal arch, there is no trace of the monumental fountain in the north. Beyazıt Square, at the center of the Historic Peninsula, at the center of the city's main transportation axes, is a place that has witnessed many historical events. The historical square, which had political importance in the Ottoman period, maintains its importance in the cultural field during the Republican period. Istanbul University, which is considered to be one of the best and most established universities in the world, and Beyazıt Mosque, which is the oldest sultanate mosque in Istanbul that preserves its originality, played a major role in preserving the importance of the square. The square, which also hosts the Beyazıt State Library and Booksellers' Bazaar, is also a road to the Grand Bazaar. The square, which was called the Old Palace Square during the Ottoman period and was changed to Hürriyet Square for a period, continues to host domestic and foreign tourists as one of the important touristic centers of the city today.
