Access points to the Potomac River for swimming in the river are along Harpers Ferry Road that bridge the span from the road over the Historic C&O Canal and to the river.

Nicely intact C&O canal lock (dry, non functioning). Walk across the footbridge to the left of the point in lower town Harpers Ferry. Once across the bridge, it has a long spiral staircase to get down to the C&O canal towpath.

Chesapeake and Ohio Canal—great for long bike rides. Go through Sheperdstown, pass over the river to the Maryland side, take an immediate right and there are several parking areas. You will see the path along the river. It runs for many miles in both directions.

Go over the bridge into Maryland, and take your first sharp right. You'll find yourself at an entry point to the C&O Canal path. Totally flat and easy walk, but can be muddy after snow or rain.
