Part of the Grand Tour, this is the perfect way to spend a nice and sunny Sunday, preferably while riding bicycle. The Appian way is the first "highway" in Europe, reaching Brindisi in the southern tip of Italy in ancient times. Alongside the road you can visit plenty of POI to visit, including Circus and Villa Maxentius, the catacombs of San Callisto and San Sebastiano (although the latter is closed on Sunday), The tomb of Cecilia Metella and Villa dei Quintili.

The Celio hill is very much worth a visit, being just in front of the imperial palace on the Palatine hill. The basilica is of great significance, as it was constructed over Roman villas that can be explored underground.
