Food Scene

In Livorno we call the Central Market "our Louvre" because it is a beatuful art nouveau building. The same architect who built the marker in Florence. The difference is that in Florence they ruined it, making a second floor with expensive restaurants. In Livorno this place is the market where you go grocery shopping because you will find the best quality products for a reasonable price!

Every Italian town has its own street food. Livorno has "5 & 5" bread filled with a very special and tasteful "torta" as we call it in Livorno: chickpeas , water, salt cooked in a wood oven. Gagarin makes the best "torta in Town"

This is a very interesting place. The Holy Mary Sanctuary is very important in Livorno. The ex voto chapel is worth visiting for all the miracles (Grace Received)painted and framed by the many painters which has always been important in Livorno. The Sanctuary is on a hill, the view is spectacular. You can take a small funicular to go up.

These hills surrounding Livorno millions of years ago were islands. Livorno was under the sea. This means that the nature and trees are really ancient, worth visiting . It reminds me of the Forest of Fangorn in the Lord of the Rings

Livorno was totally destroyed during the WWII. Few buildings were spared by the bombings. Teatro Goldoni is one of them. Worth visiting if there is something in programme like opera, concerts or plays.

Entertainment & Activities

In summer familes in Livorno move to the bathhouses. They rent a cabin and a parasol and they stay all day near the sea. They go to work and have lunch under the parasol, go back to work and have a shower and dinner in the bath house. It's worth visiting for the huge swimming pool (you need a bath cap to get into the water) and to enjoy a typical Italian atmosphere. The only shortcoming is that the entrance fee is 6 euros and you have to pay for a parasol or a chair, but you can stay for free in the swimming pool until 6 pm.
