Mitropoleos Avenue is almost parallel to Tsimiski Avenue but has lesser extent. This road, along with Ermou Street and Proxenou Koromila Street, are a much more expensive choice as it concerns fashion. On Mitropoleos Street the visitor will discover some of the city's known patisseries, branches of internationally known fashion brands and smaller boutiques. Most of the haute couture branches of the city centre though (Burberry etc) are located on Proxenou Koromila street, formerly known as The First Parallel. This street is also very popular with locals for its coffee shops and bars that stay open till late at night even on weekdays, so, if you feel like it, take a break and mingle with them in one of the stylish cafes.

In the history of the Modern Greek visual arts, the Macedonian Centre of Contemporary Art and the Macedonian Museum of Contemporary Art represent a remarkable achievement of individual initiative. It all started in 1978: In a conversation between Maro Lagia and Alexandros Iolas, after the latter had shown a keen interest in the damages inflicted on the monuments of Thessaloniki by the 1978 catastrophic earthquake, Maro proposed the creation of a contemporary art centre in Thessaloniki. Iola’s response was immediate –“Oh yes, no more hospitals and orphanages; a centre of contemporary art; that’s exactly what Thessaloniki needs.”

Modiano is one of the most traditional markets of Thessaloniki. It is located in the heart of the city and it has been part of the Thessalonians' life for about 80 years. Its construction started in 1922 and finished in 1930 by architect Eli Modiano. Most of the shops in Modiano market are food stores that sell spices, cheese, fish, meat, delicatessen products and so on. Among them, a fair number of small tavernas, restaurants and bars are also hosted here. A walk in Modiano will make you feel the spirit and scents of the old city of Thessaloniki as it truly is a living piece of history.

Drinks & Nightlife

Ladadika is one of the hot spots of Thessaloniki when it comes to entertainment. It is located in a central area right opposite to the port's central gate and within a five-minute walk from Aristotle's square. The colorful buildings are two-story with wide, rectangular windows and, along with the paved alleys, they exhale the spirit of old Thessaloniki. Here the old merges with the new. Espresso bars, coffee shops, tavernas, beer stores and so on can be found here. The colors, sounds and smells of Ladadika will give you a fair taste of Thessalonian entertainment. The entire area is for pedestrians only, thus giving you the chance to take your time, walk around and take a look until you spot the perfect place for you
