Is our local village and we think it’s one of the most beautiful in the country!
Thixendale is a small village nestled in a dry valley in the stunning Yorkshire Wolds about 11 miles south of Malton, 11 miles north of Pocklington and 17 miles east of York. Currently in North Yorkshire it was historically part of the East Riding of Yorkshire.
The Thixendale village you see today is largely down to the vision of the Sykes family of Sledmere Estate. They are responsible for building or renovating the older buildings in the village including, St. Mary’s church, the village hall and many farm buildings.
Gritts Farm, which Stable Barn was part of, was also built by the Sledmere Estate in the 1850s before being converted from use as a lambing barn and farm store in 2010.
No one is quite sure where the name Thixendale comes from but the most likely theories are:
• Sixteen Dales - 16 dales leading in to Thixendale
• Sigsten’s Valley - Sigsten/Sigsteinn is an old Scandinavian name
