Located at Casper College this museum is one of a small number of geology and paleontology museums in Wyoming, the Tate houses a collection of over 6000 fossil and mineral specimens. Museum staff are always on hand to answer questions, help identify items visitors bring in, and make your visit to the museum an enjoyable experience. The Tate is certainly a great addition to anyone’s list of ‘must-see sites’ when traveling through Wyoming. Admission is typically free to the public. Their hours are usually Monday – Saturday 10 am to 4pm but it does change. 307-268-2447 To find them, type in “Tate Geological Museum” and Google Maps will take you straight to the museum. It is just south of Casper College

Outdoor adventures

Garden Creek Falls in Rotary Park, at the base of Casper Mountain, is one of Casper’s most treasured, iconic mountain getaways known by the locals. From the cascading waterfall to the towering pines, you are sure to fall in love with nature all over again. With multiple picnic tables, iron foot bridges and a gazebo, the park is an ideal spot for a picturesque afternoon. It only takes a few minutes to hike from the parking area to the base of the falls. The trail is rocky in areas so you will want good shoes. Sitting among the aspens and ponderosa pine, it’s easy to forget that you’re just a few miles from the heart of the city. After you’ve soaked in the views of the waterfall, lace up your hiking boots to explore more of the park’s scenic wonders. The 4.5 mile Bridle Trail begins at the base of the falls and features spectacular views of the Casper area below. Reaching Split Rock is a badge of honor for locals and visitors alike. Our family has made a day out of this hike and we often bring a picnic along with us to eat at the split rock. The trail is well-maintained, well-marked and kid-friendly. However, we are at a high elevation and there are steep areas. This really is a hike but well worth it. The Bridle Trail has been named one of the top hikes every kid should take at least once by Red Tricycle. New “lookout” platforms are the most recent additions to Rotary Park. Though steep, the trail to these platforms offers families with children a chance to “scale” the mountain. They also create magnificent photo opportunities that are sure to result in your favorite vacation selfies. The Park is open year-round, weather conditions and snow accumulation prevailing. Hours are from dawn to dusk, which is defined as 30 minutes before sunrise and after sunset, respectively. County snow plows endeavor to keep Rotary Park road plowed to the upper lot and trailhead but the cul-de-sac, restrooms, picnic sites, gravel road and lower parking lot are closed as long as wintry conditions persist. Our family and many locals even snowshoe this trail in the winter. We have a local friend that does guided Yoga walks on this trail during the warmer weather. If you are interested let us know. To find this site google Rotary Park, It is at the base of Casper Mountain off Garden Creek road.

Of those trails, 20% are beginner, 40% are intermediate and 40% are expert ski terrain. The mountain also features a terrain park. With 600 vertical feet from top to bottom. The ski area offers a restaurant as well. Hogadon is one of the few resorts in the country that has the actual resort building located on the summit as opposed to the base. The elevation at the top is 8,000 feet with a 600 foot vertical rise. It has two lifts, the prospector double chair lift and the mine shaft magic carpet on the beginner hill. Traveler advice

What to pack

A jacket

We have a saying in Wyoming "if you don't like the weather wait 10 minutes." Everyone here owns at least 5 or more jackets for all seasons. It can be hot one day and snowing the next. You will want a jacket in your car or nearby at all times. Even the hot summer days have chilly evenings. The weather is unpredictable and can turn at a moments notice.
Traveling with kids

For Fun

For the Family: We have an air hockey table in the basement as well as a bookshelf with books and board games. Sometimes the field behind the house will have wildlife such as antelope and horses. For the Kids: Sage wood Elementary has a great playground and is located a few blocks west on 24th Street. Fun Valley Park is located at 3631 E 21st St, Casper, WY 82609 only a 4 min drive from the house. This Park has the best sledding hill if you are here in the winter and is a local favorite.
Getting around

You will want a car or rental car

Casper is smaller and our public transportation system is not as advanced as some areas. We do have Uber in the area. You will find that having your own transportation is easier. There is plenty of parking in most areas and attractions and it is typically free.
