Everyone needs to visit a bar that is over 100 years old, and looks it. "The" local watering hole.

A fascinating view, since the road actually goes 'through' part of the pit. Amazing what humans can do collectively over time. Like digging a really big hole in the ground.

Neighborhoods

The town of Warren was laid out by the Arizona and Calumet Mining Company in the early 1900s. It was a 'planned' community where mine employees would live and work. There is no 'grid' system of streets in Warren. The town was designed to flow with the terrain. Large features that were planned into the design of the town from the outset are a large central park (The Vista) that terminates in a swimming pool (now gone) and the Warren Ballpark. Many of the houses along The Vista are ornate and built for the mine officials and foremen. The house at the top of the Vista is called 'Loma Linda', and was originally the home of mine owner Walter Douglas, who the town of Douglas is named after.

City/town information

You can't make towns like this anymore. There is a LOT of history here. A short summation is: -1880s Copper Discovered by the army while pursuing Native Americans. -1910 Mining Boomtown (larger than St. Louis & San Francisco) -1917 Bisbee Deportation (1500+ residents literally 'rail-roaded' out of town) -1940s Pit mining operations commence. Curtailing of shaft mining. Town of 'Jiggerville' is leveled to dig the Lavender pit. -1975 major mining operations cease, mines are closed. -1980s town is abandoned, no government or police force. -1990s artists and 'hippies' move into abandoned/cheap properties. Bisbee turns 'eclectic' and 'counter culture'. -2000s Outsiders start to find out that this little town is 'stuck in time' due to its location in a canyon. The city boundaries are set and expansion isn't possible. Restoration and gentrification begin. -Most locals have a bumper sticker on their car that reads, "Bisbee, Its Like Mayberry On Acid.".... its true.

Traveler advice

Don't miss

Walk Old Bisbee

The winding streets and architecture are great, but the real charm of Bisbee lays up the stairways that lead off of Tombstone Canyon Rd and Brewery Gulch. These are public sidewalks that happen to be vertical, and lead to other street levels. The artwork found on these stairways and the views they offer are incredible.
Customs and culture

Not A Desert. We Live On A 'Sky Island'

The weather in Bisbee rarely falls below freezing and seldom gets above 90 degrees. We receive occasional snow in the winter, but it rarely lasts more than a week. Insects are plentiful in Bisbee during the spring and summer. Mosquitos and ‘No-Seeums’ are common after rainy periods. Insect repellent or long sleeves and pants are recommended. With four levels of law enforcement (Bisbee Police / Cochise County Sherriff / Arizona Department of Public Safety / Federal Border Patrol), there is little crime in the Bisbee area. All these agencies are headquartered in the Bisbee Area.
