Sightseeing

Alberobello is a unique destination in Italy. Its conical shaped houses which were built historically without mortar create a spectacular sight. The Trulli were living accomodation for the people of Alberobello their thick walls providing shade in summer and warmth in winter. Trulli are still used as living accommodation for many inhabitants in the Valle d'itria and sleeping inside a trullo you can really appreciate the wonderful craft of the stonemasons. Inside the Trulli in the oldest part of the town can be found local artisans selling local dyed cloth's, whistles, pottery and jewellery. There is also a Trulli church dedicated to Saint Anthony of Padua, this can be found at the top of the Rione dei Monti district.

Enjoy and evening passieggata (stroll to be seen) along the town walls. Stop for an aperitivo at one of the many bars and watch the sun go down over the sea. Lots of cocktails to choose from and ask for Tris which is a trio of nibbles such as Olives, Nuts and Taralli. (Puglia circular dough rings)

Traveler advice

Getting around

Alberobello has tiny streets so parking can be tricky

There is free on street parking around the town but generally yellow boxes are exclusive to residents. Blue boxes are paid parking. There are two electric charging points in the centre. Alberobello is built on two hills so best wear comforatable footwear at least until you want to take part in the evening passeggiata along the main street later in the evening. The rail station has local trains for connections to Bari and Locorotondo. The station itself is a 5-10 minute walk away. Bus stops to Martina Franca, Bari and Monopoli are located at the train station.
What to pack

Bring lightweight trainers for exploring the cobbled streets

It can get very hot in July and August so remember to carry water, sunhat and shades. Clothing should be natural fibre and loose fitting. There are plenty of cashpoints in the town so you don't need to bring large amounts of cash. Some smaller shops are more used to dealing with cash purchases however.
