Surrounding Towns

Full of history and famous for the Homestake Gold Mine, this mile high mountain town offers a small town feel with lots of amenities. Take a walking tour of the town . Stop by the Visitor's Center and look out over the "Open Cut" . On main street have some lunch, visit some shops, and be sure and tour the Black Hills Mining Museum and learn about mining in the hills throughout the years. There are some local breweries as well and this can all be walked to easily from La Casita (and it is all downhill on the way home) Across from the house is Gold Run Park. On the site of some of the old Homestake buildings you can follow the trail thru this interactive park and learn about the area and get a great view of the town.

This foothills town sits beautifully at the mouth of Spearfish Canyon. There is a paved bike path throughout the town. It passes through the D.C. Booth Fish Hatchery and the City Park. Definitely stop at Leone's Creamery for Ice Cream. Trust me.
