Food scene

This place is legendary. Dinner served family style. They host an Apple Festival in the fall, a Bluegrass festival and some others. They offer a seafood buffet on special occasions. You may see Robert Duvall in the dining room. You can rent a horse for a trail ride at their stables. Make sure to pick up some of their delicious apple butter. There are also some cute little galleries in Syria. My cousin, Ingrid, has some beautiful locally inspired works on display.

I love the baked ziti. And the creamy chicken and cheese thing, mmm, and always enough to take some home for a late night snack.

This is the closest place to the house and they make a good deli sandwich. I’m a creature of habit and mostly get the club. The sandwiches are consistently good. They also have pizza! I always forget that when I’m there bc I usually get Giovanna’s. I’ve heard it is good. They also have a variety of craft beers and VA wines. Artist Lou Messa has a display of locally inspired framed and unframed prints. I love his work and have several prints.

Shopping

Plow & Hearth has been a Madison fixture since the 80’s, and as a result there is a fabulous Outlet Store located just south of town on Rt 29. There is a great selection of items from their catalog and some good bargains to be found.

Loads of bulk foods and spices. Great selection of fresh salads. I love the broccoli cauliflower slaw. Matt loves the chocolate pie. Luke and Grammy love the canned vanilla peaches. Virginia Lee loves all the jello salads! Fresh deli sandwiches made to order. Baked goods, breads and cookies. There is also a petting zoo and goat walk ways.

President & Mrs. Hoover’s summer retreat. The camp featured Clore furniture and when the Shop burned down, President Hoover lent my great grandaddy the money to rebuild. The Peggy & Peter child’s table and chairs are named in honor of the President’s grandchildren. Troy has all this documented from his MaMaw, my Aunt Lucy Frances.
