Yes, this is home to the famous Gangnam Style but it’s not at all dorky as you might think. In fact, Gangnam is Seoul’s most modern district with COEX, the largest underground shopping mall in Asia, the most expensive high rises and the best plastic surgeons in town. You could spend an entire day in Gangnam and not get bored.

This charming neighborhood in central Seoul is where to go to get away from the faster pace you’ll often feel in other areas of the city. The peaceful, residential area offers views of the surrounding mountains of Inwangsan and Bugaksan, and is home to many art galleries, museums (including Seoul Museum and Whanki Museum), coffee shops and restaurants. Stake out a spot at Sanmotoonge (which means Mountain Corner), a popular coffee shop with amazing views over the mountains.

This quaint, traditional hillside neighborhood in northern Seoul is filled with the curved roofs and Zen-like lines of hanok, traditional houses that date back to the Joseon Dynasty. Many of the dwellings in Bukchon Hanok Village have been converted to guesthouses, teashops, or restaurants, and some are cultural centers offering traditional Korean activities such as calligraphy or knot tying. The juxtaposition between old and new here is notable, as the narrow alleys open onto views of the sprawling, futuristic metropolis below.

The contrasts of old and new are readily apparent when admiring Seoul’s City Hall. The original government building from 1926 has been dwarfed by a new space age glass-and-steel structure, completed in 2013. Fronting the buildings is Seoul Plaza, which has become a popular event venue for concerts and performances. Some of the best views of City Hall can be enjoyed from The Plaza hotel, a thriving lunch and dinner spot—the popular Murasaki and Tuscany restaurants feature Japanese and Italian cuisines respectively.

Traveler advice

Getting around

Subways are the fastest way to get around, but buses are also great if you are going to near places.

Gyeonbokgung station (Line 3/Orange Line) is only 5-10 minute walk away from Tongin 155 guesthouse. As this is one of the main subway lines in Seoul city crossing the Han River, you can easily go anywhere by subway not to worry about a traffic jam! However, the bus station is also only 3 minutes away from Tongin155 guesthouse that you can easily hop on to visit places near. Don't take the bus during rush hours for the long trip! :D

Hike Bukhansan National Park - must for sporty travelers!

The hike feels exceptionally surreal, and doesn’t feel like you’re in Seoul. The mountains provide a respite from the city life, and showcases a more beautiful and serene side of the city. You can choose to follow the crowd, or explore the Golden Buddha route (1 hour), or Baegundae route (4 hours) to reach the top. Price: Free Address: Gupabal Stn., Line 3, Exit 1. From here, make a U-turn and find a nearby bus stop (2min walk). Take either bus 704 and get off at the entrance to the park (or simply follow the crowd!) OR you can walk to Myeongdong along the Cheonggyecheon stream and will take about 30 good minutes! Myeongdong is a famous high-end shopping district, where many people go to for face masks, clothes, make-up, and more. Myeongdong also deserves a spot on your list for its amazing street food! Pro-Tip: Head over to N Seoul Tower after shopping or eating at Myeongdong as it is only a 1km walk away!
