Food Scene

Romantic, posh but comfortable, excellent grill, an art-filled garden in the summer for dining, and indoor all year round. Make sure to ask for a garden table. While the garden is lighthearted, the wine list is serious. Some nights live music. Only one mile away from the cottage on a back road with forests and creeks.

Upscale, possibly romantic, with a sunset view. A new chef in 2020 infused the menu with more locally derived ingredients. Trinidad is a fishing village, so it's featuring fresh and house-smoked fish. Venison for you die-hard carnivores. The bar menu (4-6pm) is excellent, with hand-cut fries, eggplant fries, and delicious, quirky, gastropub grub. It helps to have a GPS to find it though. If not, the best way is to take Main St. under the freeway where it turns to Westhaven Dr. Follow that about 4 miles, turn left where it ends and go for 1/8 mile to the sign for Moonstone on your right (just before the freeway onramp).

Stay close to the windows but away from the main fare at the Seascape. You can't beat the view because it's right over the harbor. Go ahead and order blackberry pie and coffee. Otherwise, the kitchen is indifferent.

Food is eclectic and so is the art inside. Harken to the "mashed potato cone" as well as real, homemade ice cream. Very beach-y fare.

Because there's wine tasting in a cozy atmosphere, with a lot of variety. Thurs. evenings are local's nights when pours are cleared out for the weekend to come.

Parks & Nature

Not on Airb'n'b's map, but about 1/2 mile south of the cottage on Stagecoach Rd. you'll find a challenging trail down to the beach. At the hairpin curve, can't miss it.
Great for agate hunting, as well as hiking in the redwoods. Five miles north of cottage.

The county park is my favorite to be close to pounding waves. A locals' place. About 10 miles north of the cottage. Be careful on the left turn to access it because the freeway there suddenly turns into a two lane road. In heavy traffic, bypass the left turn and make a u.

Looking for big redwoods that are accessible? Lady Bird has Big Trees and more Big Trees. It's just one of many groves of protected ancient redwoods within 20-30 miles of the cottage.

Old Home Beach is a narrow beach on Trinidad Bay. There are far fewer (if any) people here than than more-easily accessed beach on the north side of Trinidad Head. Sea Otters, harbor seals, and sometimes whales, can be seen in this wind-shielded beach. There are two ways to get to Old Home Beach from the bluff above it. The first is down a trail with stairs at the corner of Trinity and Edwards Streets. The second beach access is down a trail at the end of Parker Street called the Parker Creek Trail. You'll find it behind the open space behind Murphy's Market (park at top of the hill and walk down Parker St.).

Airb'n'b didn't have the town cemetery on its map, but it's worth a side trip just to discover the best headstone ever: "Murdered By Capitalism." It's on Stagecoach Rd. only about 1/8 mile north of town on the east side of the road. Look carefully, it's easy to miss. The "Murdered By Capitalism" headstone inspired the hilarious book of labor history with the same title by author John Ross. Check it out.

At the harbor, park and head up the hill. There are many trails that get you 360 views. The lighthouse is sometimes open to the public. And, if you are a Verizon customer, 4 whole bars standing next to the cell tower!

Arts & Culture

Trinidad hosts a plethora of artists. This gallery is a rotating venue for many of them. I visit it often because it's always a joy. Also, reasonable prices for lofty quality.

Essentials

Jeremy's butcher shop and fish market are the best. During crab season, even folks from Eureka (which has its own fishery) come all the way to Trinidad because the crab is just better here. During salmon season, the market gets is hands on the best of a dwindling supply. I don't eat meat, my carnivore friends go for the elk burger. Ask to borrow the host's BBQ.

Drinks & Nightlife

The restaurant is casual-upscale, great view. The food can be good or not, depending on whatever whims of the kitchen, good small bar in restaurant. Big bar with live music, karaoke, DJ. The rest is a casino set in the forest.
