It was initiated by artists such as Paul Hankar and Gustave Serrurier-Bovy, and continued by Victor Horta and Henry Van de Velde, particularly in architecture, but also in furniture.
Some of Brussels' communes, such as Schaerbeek, Etterbeek, Ixelles and Saint-Gilles, were developed during the golden age of Art Nouveau and have many buildings in this style. After 1900, the style gradually became more formal and geometric.
