At the closing of the Civil War, it was a prisoner-of-war camp for Union soldiers. White Southerners abandoned the city after the victory of the North, and the freed slaves (approx 10,000) marched through Charleston to the prison camp, un-buried the mass graves, and respectably re-buried the Union soldiers. Read about what took place...it became 'Decoration Day'; now called 'Memorial Day'. Not in the history books...go figure!
