Peak through a cave to see the crashing ocean. A very special beach nestled in a cove with epic caves and rocks. They also have coconuts and snacks at beach stands near the parking area. A must visit beach in our opinion.

If you are in for a little drive this is a beautiful beach. You can drive right up to the beach so it is more accessible than some of the other beaches.

Best Italian with the best view Perfect for sunset dinners - kid friendly (tested by our wild ones) but a perfect retreat for a romantic date night. Think fresh pasta, pizza, and antipasto We love the pumpkin ravioli, the beef tartare, and all of the pizzas. Good cocktail selection with Italian wines too.

This is our go-to butcher shop - all organic and grass fed. Artisanal butter and raw milk. Really fab. Now they have opened up a restaurant with a stellar menu - breakfast through dinner. You can even pick a cut of steak from the meat case and have them cook it to spec for 4 bucks on top of the cost of the meat. The warm potato salad is bomb. Burgers are awesome. Worth the visit for sure.

Reputedly Central America's largest insect museum, this place has an extensive collection assembled by the Facultad de Agronomía (agronomy faculty) at the Universidad de Costa Rica. After viewing the specimens, visitors are invited to a room with a kitchen to sample meal worms, scarabs and crickets. A little salt and oregano does wonders.

This museum houses the world’s largest collection of American jade (pronounced ‘ha-day’ in Spanish), with an ample exhibition space of five floors offering seven exhibits. There are nearly 7000 finely crafted, well-conserved pieces, from translucent jade carvings depicting fertility goddesses, shamans, frogs and snakes to incredible ceramics (some reflecting Maya influences), including a highly unusual ceramic head displaying a row of serrated teeth. Interesting indigenous history is on display, too.

This site, 4km north of Sierpe, offers the best opportunity to view the mysterious pre-Columbian spheres created by the Diquís civilization between 300 BCE and 1500 CE, in their originally discovered locale, near culturally significant mounds 30m in diameter. In their original setting, one can really appreciate their size and perfect sphericity. The onsite museum screens an informative video on the spheres' significance and purpose, and there are other fascinating artifacts on display here, such as stone sculptures and metates (grain-grinding stones) unique to the Diquís.

If you're wondering how to get your young kids interested in art and science, this unusual museum – actually two museums in one – is an excellent place to start. Housed in an old penitentiary built in 1909, it's part children’s museum and part art gallery. Small kids will love the hands-on exhibits related to science, geography and natural history, while grown-ups will enjoy the unusual juxtaposition of contemporary art in abandoned prison cells.
