Gotts Roadside Cafe Location: St. Helena Website: https://www.gotts.com This place is amazing! My preference is to order online, pick it up, and then head back to the house. It is about a 12 minute drive into town. They get busy sometimes and the line can be quite long if you try to order there. The burgers are all excellent, and the Ahi Tacos are unbelievable, and if you like shakes….. You can’t go wrong with Gotts.

Wine Tasting

Cade Winery Location: Angwin / Howell Mountain Address: 360 Howell Mountain Road, Angwin, CA 94508 Website: www.cadewinery.com Phone: 707-690-1213 Book Tastings @ www.Cellarpass.com Cost per Tasting: $80 It is difficult to choose which is better, the views or the wine, but both are absolutely spectacular! The winery is a 1.5 mile, 5 minute drive by road, but it is only about 0.25 miles from our home as the crow flies. Cade’s Vineyards are only a few thousand feet from the house and wow do those vineyards produce some amazing Cabernet Sauvignon. They have a Sauvignon Blanc that is fabulous as well. You have to book Cade at least 3 weeks in advance, and the tastings are on the pricier side at $80 per person. They do offer some nice food pairings to enjoy with their wines (i.e. a small plate of cheese, fruit and chocolate), but it isn’t anything substantial. They prep for your tasting in advance, so please make sure you show up on time and with the proper number of people for the reservation. They don’t change things up on the fly well. As one would guess, Cade’s wines are a bit more expensive with the Sauv Blanc starting at $60 a bottle and the Cabs starting at $120 and go up from there. The wine and the experience make this a must-stop on Howell Mountain.

Robert Craig Winery: Location: Howell Mountain Address: 2475 Summit Lake Dr, Angwin, CA 94508 Website: https://robertcraigwine.com/visit/ Email: info@robertcraigwine.com Really cool property and a great tasting experience. The wines were awesome all around. The owner (Elton, a fellow Indiana alum) is a blast. Carly was our host, and she was really fun. The views are amazing and this place is absolutely worth a visit. It doesn’t hurt that the Howell Mountain location is only 10 minutes (4.3 miles) from the house. They do have another tasting room in Napa, which is a good option, as the tastings on the mountain are very limited and considerably more expensive ($125 per person on the mountain and $35-$65 in Napa). We haven’t visited these Wineries on Howell Mountain yet, but we have heard great things. Please check them out and let us know how they are. We will be visiting them soon ourselves. You will need to setup an appointment in advance. They do 3 tastings a day Monday – Thursday at 10am, 1:00 pm and 3:00pm. Their Tasting Room Manager Katie is delightful and attentive. They have very nice Reds here with their 2016 Cab Franc being our favorite. We are wine club members at Bravante and absolutely love it here. You won’t be disappointed.

Bremer Family Winery Location Howell Mountain Address: 975 Deer Park Road, St. Helena, CA 94574 Website: https://bremerfamilywinery.com Phone: 707-963-5411 Email: winery@bremerfamilywinery.com Cost per Tasting: $50 While Bremer’s tasting room technically isn’t on Howell Mountain (must be above 1400’), they do have a vineyard on the mountain. They are also a mere 2.6 miles away from the house and takes just 5 minutes to get there. This is a little bigger operation than Bravante, but still definitely on the smaller size as far as Napa Wineries go. They have a nice tasting room with some tables outside. We are club members here and always have a great time (unlimited tastings for members). Bill and Mike have been our servers, and they took exceptionally great care of us. There were some really nice Cabs that we tasted including the 2015 Howell Mountain Cab, but their Cab Blend “Austintatious” (named after their son) was in our bag when we left. They also have a nice Chardonnay that was a little less buttery than most. Hint: They won’t offer to take you on a tour of their caves, but if you ask and they aren’t too busy, it is an experience worth taking. It is a labyrinth full of wine barrels and very old wine-making equipment. Open by appointment daily from 10:00 – 5:00.

It is more rolling hills and sun-soaked valleys, but an equally impressive landscape. The 24 minute (11.7 mile) somewhat twisty drive takes you to within about 0.5 miles of Lake Hennessey. This winery feels a lot more like a midwestern farm than a Napa Valley Vineyard. They have a nice Chardonnay that is clean and not to buttery or oaky . The presentation of the glasses for the tasting is magnificent but take care to remove the clear glass “lids” that they place over the poured tastings. Three out of four of us dropped one at least once (no breakage though!). Sarah was are hostess. She was quite pleasant and has a profound yet unpretentious way of describing their wines. We were split on our favorite at this location, but the experience was worth the drive. This was also the only winery we visited where they made an effort to accommodate “drop-ins”. I would recommend calling ahead, but if you want to roll the dice and just show up, this might be your best option.

It is a much larger operation than the previous wineries mentioned, and there is certainly some Wow-factor at work. On top of that, the reds we tasted were exceptional! Amazing Cabs for sure, but the highlight was definitely the Profile Blend. We had just finished a day of inspections at our Alta Loma home while we were in the process of purchasing it. It was 4:30 or so and we didn’t have an appointment when we rolled in. We were greeted by Armando, who listened to my sad story of being in Napa for my first time and not getting to do any tasting, and he said, “sit down and I’ll get you a pour”. 4-5 wines later, we were content to have tasted some exceptional wine and a little wiser about our new area as well. The building is very spacious, and the dining hall lined with giant wine barrels is gorgeous. Definitely worth a visit.

About a 15 minute drive from the house on the way to Calistoga; this is a very cool 100,000+ square foot legit Tuscan Castle that was dropped into CA. You can tour the castle with a paid tasting, and this is an excellent choice should you have children with you, as they offer them grape juice tastings along with the adults’ wine tastings. You can also get a chocolate pairing for an additional $5, and it is worth it. The wines were very good, and they are some of the least expensive wines of any winery we have visited. I recommend the seated tasting option.

They are very well known for their Chardonnays, and I found their Zin to be very nice. The tasting experience was very enjoyable, and we learned a lot about wines. Our host had worked for Charles Shaw at one point (long before they started making Two-Buck-Chuck), and he warned us against ever consuming that wine. Views are beautiful and this one is fairly easy to get into if you need a last minute filler. Also only about a 12 minute drive from the house.

Culinary Institute of America at Greystone: Gatehouse Restaurant Location: St. Helena Website: https://www.ciagatehouserestaurant.com We had an absolute blast here. Making reservations for more than 6 is next to impossible, but it was worth the effort. I had to stop in and talk to a live person to get them to accommodate a party of 9, and I’m so glad I did. The students do a rotation where half of them cook and the other half serves, and then at midterm they switch. The food was outstanding, and the service was exemplary. They serve a 4-course meal with 3-4 options per course. They come out in an entourage and set the plate for each person down at once. It was a really cool experience that I highly recommend.
