The famous TRUTH coffee shop, if you are a coffee lover you have to check it out. The slogan at Cape Town’s reigning roaster is “We do coffee properly.” Judging by the crowds that congregate in the funky steampunk-inspired space (think industrial-chic decor and retro typewriters, exercise bikes, and a pressed-tin bar) on the city’s east side, Truth more than lives up to its mantra — this is the city’s most popular coffee house. A strong flat white here will sort you out for the rest of the day.

Both times I've eaten here, it has been excellent. You can't book and it is very popular so arrive early. Wondering where Cape Town’s chefs eat on their days off? Bree Street, the Central Business District’s recently anointed restaurant row, is a good start. There, celebrated chef Liam Tomlin’s eatery doubles as a culinary hangout for those who know a thing or two about food. Tomlin is a pro with his set menu of contemporary South African-fusion tapas.

Drinks & Nightlife

Tucked neatly behind Honest Chocolate Café in the armpit of the Commune 1 Gallery, this dedicated gin bar, is all about quality rather than quantity. The menu comprises only four cocktails, aimed at providing connoisseurs with some much needed organic healing. Cleverly named Head, Heart, Soul and Ambition, the gins are refreshing, tasty and deliciously subtle in flavour.
