A beautiful walk by the river, with a massive miner (he's bigger than the angel of the north) standing over you! He commemorates a mining disaster, and a board sharing the history is near his plinth.

If you want to know the fascinating history of our local area, this is the place to go! The underground tour from a retired miner is the real highlight, so best to ring ahead and make sure the tours are running. There's also lots of over-ground exhibits and sometimes a live smithy at work. Best of all, only the parking tickets actually cost anything (just 3 quid a car)!
