Coastal bird-watching in the Yucatán
Enjoy seeing a variety of shorebirds along the Yucatán coast, just an hour outside of Mérida! We will meet at the Paseo Montejo McDonald's parking lot in Mérida to drive due north to the coast, where we will look for a variety of shorebird species, migratory and resident alike, and other endemics that can only be seen in Yucatán, like the Yucatan wren and the Mexican sheartail hummingbird. Once we arrive at the shore, we will start with a walk along the beach to observe and photograph various species–such as plovers, sandpipers, avocets, stilts, black skimmers– as they congregate, search for food and rest. Then we will move to the nearby mangroves to look for the beautiful mangrove warbler, herons, rails and more. We will finish the tour along a coastal highway surrounded by water on both sides, where we will look for flamingoes and roseate spoonbills flying overhead as the sun sets and we enjoy snacks and refreshments. This tour is best enjoyed in the afternoon, when you can see the greatest variety of species as they come to roost for the evening. The tour is designed for all levels of experience–no prior bird knowledge required! It’s an activity that focuses on mindfulness and connecting with the place you’re in. We will also give you a quick digiscoping lesson, so you can use your phone and the binoculars to take photos to show your friends and family after the tour.
Urban bird-watching in Mérida’s parks

The park has a large pond, which is a perfect habitat for birds to search for food and shelter. As we walk through the park we will look for herons, warblers, motmots, doves and raptors like ospreys, roadside hawks and snail kites. The walk is easy and on paved, shaded paths throughout the park, and it is best enjoyed in the early morning while the birds are most active. The tour is designed for all levels of experience–no prior bird knowledge required! It’s an activity that focuses on mindfulness and connecting with the place you’re in.
