Pyramid Hill, VIC A small Victorian wheat belt town with a very unusual hill. Pyramid Hill is a small town south of the Murray River. It primary interest lies in the remarkable granite outcrops which are dotted throughout the area. Apart from the outcrop which gives the town its name there is also Bald Rock in Terrick Terrick State Park and Mount Hope, named by Major Thomas Mitchell as he explored the area. The primary place of interest is Pyramid Hill a remarkable triangle of granite which rises from the flat surrounding countryside and, as its name suggests, looks exactly like an Egyptian pyramid. Location Pyramid Hill is located 242 km north of Melbourne via Bendigo. ^ TOP Origin of Name Pyramid Hill is one of those 'bleeding obvious' names because the hill itself, which was first sighted by Major Thomas Mitchell in 1836, looks like a triangle of stone. Thus Mitchell named it because of its similarity, as he wrote, to 'the monuments of Egypt'. ^ TOP Things to See and Do Pyramid Hill Pyramid Hill (187 m above sea-level) is worth visiting because (a) it is a rare natural phenomena which really does look like an Egyptian pyramid - at least from a distance and (b) there is an easy walk up to an excellent vantage point where you can look over the very flat countryside and the nearby town of Pyramid Hill. This is wheat and sheep country which, in the spring, is particularly attractive because it can be covered in wildflowers. In fairness Major Mitchell arrived in the middle of winter and was lyrical in his appreciation of the view. In Three Expeditions into the interior of Eastern Australia he wrote: "Its apex consisted of a single block of granite, and the view was exceedingly beautiful over the surrounding plains, shining fresh and green in the light of a fine morning. The scene was so different from anything I had ever before witnessed either in New South Wales or elsewhere. A land so inviting and still without inhabitants!" Fauna on Pyramid Hill The signage at the bottom of the hill gives a good indication that the careful visitor could see the wedge-tail eagle, black wallaby, yellow-rumped honeyeater, eastern brown snake and zebra finch. Mount Hope Mt Hope was also climbed in 1836 by Thomas Mitchell. The name was given to the hill by Mitchell who, as he climbed, hoped that he would see the sea from its peak. There are picnic facilities and a Mitchell plaque at the base of the mountain and it is but a short walk to the top of the hill. At the top there are panoramic views which take in Kow Swamp and the surrounding farmland. ^ TOP Other Attractions in the Area Terrick Terrick National Park Terrick Terrick National Park lies 20 km south-east of Pyramid Hill. It protects over 200 species of native flora including including Victoria's finest stand of native white cypress pines. Fauna includes grey kangaroos, black wallabies and tree goannas and it is recognised the largest nesting site for brolgas in Victoria. Its birdlife also includes the Plains wanderer, Grey-crowned babbler, barking owl and spotted nightjar. The park has some impressive granite outcrops and rocky depressions which were used as water holes by the Aborigines. ^ TOP History Pyramid Hill is a town which was the victim of a decision by the state railways. It was first explored by Major Thomas Mitchell who, in 1836, climbed and named the hill after which the town is named. Mitchell sang the praises of the district and soon after his exploration squatters moved in and settled. A town, comprising two hotels, St Patrick's Church (1875), a school (dating from 1876), a showground (1888), a weir for regular water supply, a blacksmith and a general store was established on the south side of the hill (you can see old photographs of the town on the signage at the base of Pyramid Hill) near the original Pyramid Hill run but when the railway arrived in the area in 1885 the town was moved to its present site. ^ TOP Visitor Information The best source of local information is the Victoria Hotel, 20 Victoria St, tel: (03) 5455 7391. ^ TOP Useful Websites There is a useful local website - http://www.pyramidhill.net.au - with information about the history and some good photos of the area.

Step into nature in your own secluded railway carriage in the Australian bush. Let the lagoon rewild your senses ( due to drought the lagoon is currently dry) and chill out in retro style. Off grid, hidden away and a gem of an experience, come take some time out. No hum of the city, just kangaroos hopping past, birds singing and frogs harmonising with each other.
Settle into 100 acres of native bush and sandhills encompassed by an old river meander and surround yourself with rare and endangered flora and fauna. No hunting of native wildlife is allowed on the property. This is a flora and fauna reserve and we want to keep it that way thanks.Bring your camera and get some groovy shots of the wildlife. Possums, wallabies, echidna, various snakes and lots of interesting insects share the property with us. Sometimes we meet. At Christmas the Christmas beetles come around, Easter brings the goat moths, spring the red spotted jezebel, year in and year out insects, spiders, reptiles and mammals come and go. This place really is nature’s home. The Murray river is only 800 metres from our front gate. Great for swimming, fishing and relaxing.
We are a farming community and only 20 min from the historic town of Echuca where the paddlesteamers ply the mighty Murray River. We grow citrus fruit and distill essential oils on our farm. The river is 10 min walk from your carriage and the lagoon surrounds the property. Our region is also known for its great wines and cuisine. Local produce is abundant and there is a farmers market on the 1st 3rd and 5th weekend of the month in Echuca.
  • We loved staying here! Tuesday was a great host even before we arrived. It really felt like she opened up her home and took us in like family. Lots of little touches and both Tuesday and Harry went out of their way to make us feel welcome and comfortable. The local area is just beautiful, a taste of Australia you rarely get a glimpse of anymore. Would recommend staying here, you’ll be better for it.

  • We loved staying in Tuesday’s railway carriage. Tuesday welcomed us upon arrival and gave us an orientation to her devine property. Picnic dinner at the river and lots of animal friends surrounding us. Tuesday was fantastic to communicate with and so welcoming.

    Narelle2019-12-06T00:00:00Z
  • Fabulous place to experience the nature and country lifestyle! The carriage is well furnished with everything required to stay comfortably. Tuesday and Harry are super friendly and attentive. The code red fire danger alert was announced in the region on one of the day during my stay. They were there to look after me and help me to evacuate to a safe place. Thank you very much! I felt so refresh and energised after the visit. Definitely worth a bit of travelling time to get to here!

The historical Westpac bank of Boort; a delightful double brick two story building with views of the lake and a one minute stroll to the shore. It's an old house we fell in love with, filled with light and beautifully cool in summer. The location is amazing - pub across the road, a balcony above the street, cafe and shops two doors down. We have decorated everything vintage - reused, recycled, old furniture, second hand or free, in simple floral tones. Everything you need for a lovely holiday.
We are slowly bringing the building back to it's former glory, but for now, please forgive the carpet stains and damaged lino - its all part of her charm. There is a lovely outdoor area, balcony overlooking the main street of Boort, and secure parking. The front of the house that was originally the old bank is our little shop and we sleep there occasionally, but it is semi-detached and has no access to your house and yard so will not interrupt the privacy of your stay.
Boort is a beautiful town and we are parked right on the main road. The lake is year round entertainment for swimming, fishing, water skiing or bird watching. There is a local swimming pool, two hotels in walking distance and the one directly across the road does the best pizzas for $16.

  • The shearing Shea’s is a wonderful place to stay. Beautiful touches such as the large grading table as a kitchen island add so much character to this place. Wonderfully clean and well stocked with all the little extra things that make staying here a pleasure. It’s in a quiet location with the river at the end of the road. I only wish I had remembered to bring the fishing rods. Nights on the veranda with friends and a few wines was just perfect. Thanks for having us, we will be back.

  • Gorgeous country Victoria! The Shearing Shed was a perfect place for us to see in the New Year comfortable for 4 couples, plenty of space and seating inside and out for all. Great amenities provided everything you could imagine! Stunning sunsets from the enclosed verandah and total peace and quiet! There is another person living on site close by in another building however this didn’t concern us at all and it didn’t impact upon our visit. Loved our short morning and evening walks down to the river to explore. We will certainly be returning soon possible during the winter months to make the most of the beautiful fires.

    Danielle2020-01-01T00:00:00Z
  • Great family getaway with heaps of room for everyone. Beautiful space to relax. The enclosed balcony is great and bedrooms are perfect. Love the styling and easy layout so fun! Kitchen was great and we really enjoyed visiting the animals each afternoon with our food scraps! Thanks for creating this private space for a great getaway.

  • What a great place! It’s as beautiful as it looks. Lynn was super responsive, and the place is beautifully kitted out with comfy linen and towels. Might be worth packing some extra drinking water, as the tap water is not recommended for drinking. Beautiful part of the world, with Echuca 20 minutes up the road and some great places to access the river. A real treat - thanks for having us Lynn and Rowan.

  • This property was a complete delight to stay in. The privacy, the peace, close enough to the village, and the county aspect were very soothing for the soul. We had two families staying there and we were very well catered for re amenities. Highly recommend this airBnB.

  • This was such a beautiful property with everything you needed for a perfect stay. We loved the pontoon, meeting Ted, going fishing, lazing in the sun, taking the canoe out, going for a dip in the Murray River and the outdoor spa. Will definitely come back again!

    Karina2019-12-13T00:00:00Z
  • Absolutely gorgeous spot. Could not fault the place at all. We had the most lovely stay, especially with Ted (the dog) spending most of his time sprawled on our porch. The hot tub is perfect for sitting in and watching the world go by. Just don't trust the airbnb get directions option as it takes you bush bashing along the river. Enter the address instead :)

    Jasmine2019-10-27T00:00:00Z
  • We enjoyed a great weekend getaway in the cottage. Activities like hiking, bike riding and kayaking at your doorstep, and private spa and bbq. We did need to leave the property all weekend. Thanks Vicki, Greg and Ted (the dog).

  • What a little slice of paradise - I'm completely in love with the house and the area. The house was spotless and filled with everything needed for a comfortable stay, with extras like a hot tub set at the perfect temperature, an outdoor area that was just divine on the Saturday afternoon where you could sit with a wine and some cheese. A couple of minutes walk landed you on a floating pontoon to sit by the river. It was pure heaven - It was so relaxing, I just can't wait to go back again. Then to top it off the hosts Vicki and Paul are absolutely lovely. Thanks so much to both of you for your hospitality and your gorgeous BnB.

Treasures are a plenty with new stock arriving weekly. Open every weekend. The Gunbower Butcher open Monday to Saturday. Locally sourced meat that you will be raving about long after you've got home from your holiday. Looking for an adventure? Barefoot bowls at The Gunbower Bowls Club, a game of tennis at the local tennis courts or a picnic at Kow Swamp - nothing like a swamp and a lot more like a spring fed lake with show stopping sunsets and beautiful green lawns perfect for picnics.
  • Beautiful accommodations in a historic building with modern conveniences. Letitia was a fabulous host and provided great recommendations during our stay. Gunbower and Echuca are lovely country towns with lots of activities. Highly recommend and hope we have opportunity to visit again.

    Cathy2019-10-13T00:00:00Z
  • The accommodation completely exceeded our expectations. The butter factory is so well restored, with so much attention to detail within the apartment. This is one of the nicest places we have stayed at. The bed was very comfortable. Everything was spotless. On arrival,Letitia had even left a couple of lamingtons for us to enjoy. Will definitely stay again.

    Dominic2019-04-25T00:00:00Z
  • Staying in ‘The Wattle Room’, at The Butter Factory was a unique and extraordinary experience. Apart from the obvious; staying in a building that is steeped with history; was fascinating to uncover. The location added an extra touch of ‘Serenity’ sitting on the banks of the River (awesome at Sunrise and Sunset)! It is a privilege to come across a dedicated and passionate couple such as Letitia and Jon. They have already achieved SO much in the restoration of The Butter Factory. We will continue to follow the continued transformation of this Landmark Property.

So much space for us all to spread out and ample space to prep and serve food for a big number of guests too. The lagoon that goes direct into the river being just over the road was fantastic. Kids learnt to watch carefully for cars! Plus they played for hours catching weeds with their rods! Well equipped house and layout and position were fabulous. Tom was fast to communicate when needed also. The courtesy bus for the loca pub was handy too on the night we went for sinner. Food was great too

We had 4 adults and 2 children (aged 12 and 9) during our stay and there was more than enough room for all of us. We certainly enjoyed our stay and hope to be able to return again in the future! Thanks once again for allowing us to stay.

  • Hi Michael & Karolyn, We had a fantastic stay at your place, you have a beautiful setup and the open design is just ideal. It certainly is like a mini resort and so peaceful. You guys have been a pleasure to deal with and we will certainly be returning. We shall also be highly recommending to our friends who like the area to stay there as well. Thank you again and we look forward to our next booking with you. Rgds Michael & Andrijana

Our place is a purpose built newly renovated share accommodation in a 1923 mud brick building in the middle of town. You are booking one single bottom bunk in a room of 4. There are communal spaces which include two toilets and two showers, full kitchen and lounge to relax in. We are young and fun hosts and we want to create a fun and safe atmosphere for everyone to enjoy. Please feel free to message with any questions.
The rooms have two bunk beds and 4 individual lockers for storage. Each bed has it's own power points for convenience. There are also lockers in the kitchen to store food so you don't have to worry about people helping themselves. The rooms are fully air conditioned and for winter there are heaters provided.
Lockington is a great little town, it has everything you need. There is a fantastic Foodworks, Takeaway shop and even has an Ice cream and Waffle House! There is also a business centre with a Bendigo Bank, op shop, fuel and laundromat. If you are planning on staying for a while there is a very active football and netball scene as well as grass tennis courts and an outdoor swimming pool in Summer. The town is surrounded by open water canals which provide a nice place to walk around and get to know some of the locals.
