Places to stay in Pine Ridge
This cozy, country home is located just 3 miles outside of Chadron, NE. Listening to nature and enjoying the wildlife can be expected such as; deer, turkeys, grazing cattle along with howling coyotes in the evening.. Just a day drive away to the Black Hills of South Dakota & Historic Fort Robinson. This is a quiet, relaxing getaway!
Guests are welcome to the entire home while experiencing the beauty of the country life! There is a large TV room with cable available, that can be separated or open to the living area. (Great for families & kiddos) Covered parking is available and included! 3 bedrooms available - Sleeps 4-6 comfortably, up to 8 ppl. One full bath with shower & one 1/2 bath.
I live in the peace and quiet of country life, with plenty of space between neighbors. It's a ranching community with grasslands, pastures and cattle. Creek flows by our property, attracting birds and much wildlife. Chadron's landscape is open with views of buttes/badlands and ridges of pine trees. It may sound as though I live in the middle of nowhere, but I feel like I live in the middle of everything.
  • The house is very clean and comfortable. The landscape is beautiful, Nebraska at it's best. Each morning my family and I enjoyed watching the birds and rabbits in the yard. We stayed in February 2020, I imagine it is even more beautiful in the summertime. I felt our stay was worth every penny and then some.

This is a very simple cabin perfect for the traveler who is comfortable camping but does not have the proper equipment. It has a regular twin bed and we can place a sleeping bag and pillow inside for your comfort.
If you are interested in sustainable building this is also perfect for you! It is built with shipping pallets and insulated with light straw clay. The entire cabin is made from natural and upcycled materials. The only new things we added are for the roof, for dry nights.
How many opportunities do you have to stay on an Indian Reservation and be hosted by locals? We are just 10 min drive to the Wounded Knee Massacre and Grave site. 30 minutes to the South Gate of Badlands National Park and White River Visitor Center. Visit our local museums to learn more about the culture and history of the Lakota people.
  • No other place like it! One of a kind on the Pine Ridge Indian Reservation or any reservation! Shannon is sweet and a great communicator! If I'm passing through here again, this is where I'll be staying! Also, the dogs are adorable and sweet as can be!

  • We stayed for a week while we traveled around the area and the house was exactly what we needed. It was simple but checked all the boxes for what we were looking for. Jessica was a great host and was quick to respond when we needed things. Will definite be back!

  • Nice, clean, cozy and cute lil place. Better than getting a room. I can cook which is a big deal when your meal prepping. You can’t do that in a small hotel.

  • This is a quiet, beautiful place and the facility is well kept. It is perfect for collaborative work with TVCDC, or as a base for site-seeing in the area. The towels are nice and thick and the bedding is new. It's completely self-catering arrangement, so I might recommend the host add a coffee maker.

  • The bunkhouse is a beautiful new space with with great light and everything you need for a comfortable stay. The property management team is interested in and receptive to suggestions as they are setting out on this new aspect of Thunder Valley. The organization itself is growing quickly and organically. They are a wonderful example of what inspiration, dedication, planning, and listening and responding to the needs of the community can generate. There was something happening at Thunder Valley most days of my stay, adding a vibrant energy and enriching the experience. It had the feel of staying near the town square. I recommend staying at Thunder Valley and seeing what they are creating. Time in Pine Ridge itself is always beyond words for me.

  • very simple, no frills, hardly anyone staying at the bunkhouse when I was there. right by Sharps Corner, one of the main intersections/convenience stores on the reservation.

  • Susan and JP were wonderful, great communicator's, and I would stay again! Pine Ridge holds a special quality about it, the Natives I met were lovely and provided a truly rich experience. So Happy I made that journey. Sue's place is a haven on the rez. The badlands are a must see, as is the Red Cloud Heritage Museum. Hot Springs is a quick ride to do some shopping and visit Evans Plunge Mineral Springs and head into the Black Hills. Sue's place has everything you need for a very comfortable stay.

  • My colleague and I had a few days work in Pine Ridge. Sue's place was perfect for our needs: 2 bedrooms, 2 bathrooms, close to Pine Ridge, and a beautiful rural setting. We had everything we needed and Sue went above and beyond to insure we could find the place from Rapid City and settle in comfortably. She is hospitable, a great communicator and very responsive.

A modern style cabin with many personal touches. This beautiful tiny home is full of charm and is in a great location right on the edge of small town Rushville, Ne. It has a cute lofted bedroom with three twin sized beds that when pushed together make a king size bed. Or bring the family and let the kids enjoy a night telling stories and making memories. This home also has a full sized pull out mattress in the living room. You won't forget the times you spend here.
This tiny home has a grocery store on one side and a restaurant on the other. Both within walking distance.
  • Very clean and good hospitality with christen.

  • Cirsten was a wonderful host! She even left beautiful flowers and a sympathy card since she knew I was in town for a funeral❤️ I nearly didn’t book because of the bad review left by a previous renter but I’m so glad I did! There was no bad smell, in fact it smells exactly how you would hope a cabin would smell, and you can barely hear the minimal amount of traffic going by. I would definitely book again! We especially loved the coffee and creamer!

Find your nook in our rustic camp sites, centrally located on the Pine Ridge Indian Reservation to the Badlands and Wounded Knee massacre site. Bring your own gear. Or try one of our tipis or rustic cabin search: "Tipi Under the Stars" or "Tipi On the Prairie" or "Little House on the Rez"
We are located other heart of the Pine Ridge Indian reservation.
We are centrally located on the Pine Ridge Indian Reservation. Just 9 miles from the Wounded Knee massacre site and mass grave. Museums and Badlands within 25 min drive. This is a great place for those wishing to get off the beaten path, explore the Pine Ridge Reservation and the Badlands.
  • The field was beautiful and quiet. Getting there the first time was a bit confusing, but Shannon was very helpful and gave me clear directions. She also told me a bit about the plants in the area and gave suggestions about things to see. I had a wonderful stay!

    Jacqueline2018-07-28T00:00:00Z
  • A one of a kind experience. Ours was very brief but very enjoyable. I can only imagine the good times to be had during a longer stay!

    Malori2017-08-20T00:00:00Z
  • Go to Shannon's and feel like you're at home. It is a special place. You'll know once you drive up the gravel road and see the space, see the unique buildings, and see what Shannon and her family are trying to accomplish. They are succeeding in making an abode where you can feel something fresh and new and you have so many places you can leap to within close proximity. Go to camp, go to the Black Hills and the Badlands. The added bonus is being able to experience the Lakota community. Perhaps you will feel that you never want to leave...

    Monica2017-06-22T00:00:00Z
  • This was my third visit to Shannon's home in four years and it was fun to see all the improvements since last time, and how her vision for expanding the earth-friendly, sustainable structures there comes to life. I had forgotten how beautiful her family's property location is (up in the higher, wooded elevations near Manderson), which reminded me of the nearby Black Hills area. Shannon's 3 children are so friendly and fun to be around, my dog was welcome (and had a blast running around with the family's dogs), and this year I even got to enjoy their new above-ground swimming pool, perfect during the hot days I was there. Shannon spent much time answering all my questions about life on the Pine Ridge Reservation, about other volunteer organizations there, and about her own experience as founder of Earth Tipi. Its always a joy to connect with the Lakota people, and Shannon's husband and father-in-law were quite welcoming to me, and joined us for a s'mores campfire in the evening. A perfect visit for my purposes :)

  • Shannon's location was a great stop to enjoy the outdoors and take a much needed break during our road trip. The open area was large enough and quiet enough to get a much needed night's sleep. Her father in law was friendly and helpful. The dogs on the property were a nice touch (we love dogs and it was great to see) that made us feel more welcomed and secured. Shannon was always ready to answer any questions and provide suggestions. Thank you for everything

  • Had such a great time on the reservation. Shannon, Adam, the girls and other friends/family we were introduced to were so amazing!!! We had great conversation and learned a lot!! Me and my boyfriend stayed on the reservation one night while on our way to Yellowstone. The accommodations were exactly as described. We tented in the meadow and lit the bonfire at night. The sky is unbelievably clear and absolutely perfect for stargazing. Thanks so much!!

    Becky2015-09-12T00:00:00Z
  • Shannon was a great host. She was very accommodating and has a wonderful family. It was peaceful and quiet. The stars at night were breathtaking. I enjoyed learning about all food she has growing on her property along with the construction of her house.

  • Shannon was rightfully nervous about our coming late at night on the fourth of July; be sure you listen to her and drive in the daylight as it is off the beaten path. But we made it safe and sound and found such a beautiful meadow, flat, freshy mowed grass, and such proximity to Badlands! We slept very soundly and had a great morning driving through the beautiful Reservation. Would recommend this spot!

Rustic cabin on the Pine Ridge Indian Reservation. Price includes tribal and state taxes.
This 600 sq.ft rustic cabin is a great option for those wanting to visit the reservation and have a place out of the elements. We are working to add more of the comforts of home but for now, there is a sink with a working drain but no running water. We will make sure there is potable water inside for drinking, hand washing etc. We are looking at options for solar but for now there is an extension cord so you can charge your electronics and use the lamp we provide. There is a wood stove and passive solar heater which are only necessary from October through April. It is sealed, comfortable and smells of fresh pine.
Centrally located on the Pine Ridge Indian Reservation home of the Oglala Lakota. We are just a short distance to Wounded Knee. Easily access Badlands National Park and other interesting points from our location.
  • Although I didn't get to stay this time, I wish I could've. Shannon is a very good communicator and is always willing to help you out! I'll definitely be back to stay on the Rez!

  • A very unique space. Perfect for a night's stay for my partner and I. Gerald and Shannon were gracious hosts.

    Garry2019-08-30T00:00:00Z
  • My husband and I stopped at Earth Tipi on the way back from a long road trip. We were trying to avoid big freeways while going through underpopulated country so I was surprised to find an Aibnb. Having never stopped at a Native American reservation before, we were curious and wanted to visit the Wounded Knee massacre memorial. In spite of careful planning, we arrived as the sun was setting and we got turned around so it took some time to find the place. Therefore, I highly recommend arriving in the daylight, and follow Shannon’s written directions, not your GPS. Shannon helped us out over the phone and Adam graciously welcomed us with a flash light. It gets very dark and we were delighted to see the Milky Way. We stayed in the large cabin. My husband who doesn’t like to camp out grumbled about the compost toilet and the bugs, but we absolutely loved the whole experience, including the grounds with include a large tipi, picnic tables, the stars, the hill side surroundings, the sweet dogs and cats that kept us company, even wild horses that showed up one night. We visited Wounded Knee and went to a pow-wow in Rosebud a couple hours away. The whole experience was magical, unexpected and eye-opening. I highly recommend it. Other recommendations: Bring a cooler for your food. We wished we had some camping cooking gear to make coffee or have our old-foggie-evening herbal tea. Make sure you gas up and get cash (there are ATMs at here and there but everything is miles away) to support the local artisans who sell their beautiful work here and there. Take the time to stop and chat.

    Stephanie2019-08-25T00:00:00Z
  • Our stay here was one of the highlights of our trip to South Dakota. It's a beautiful spot, with the ridge to the east, sunny skies, and deeply starry night. I enjoyed seeing the work on the food forest and other sustainable homestead projects. Our beds in the bunkhouse were comfortable, and I even caught a glimpse of a coyote or other creature from the window in the night. Above all, Shannon made us feel so welcome and part of daily life. Our kids hit it off, we ended up extending our time in the area, and our daughter shed tears when we had to finally depart.

    Ilse2019-07-26T00:00:00Z
  • I stayed at the cabin, basic facilities, but it was peaceful and quiet where it is. Miles of lands around the property and allows you to have some time to yourself. There are mustangs kept around the ranch, and strawberry fields. Adam was helpful in terms of providing local tip. In general a great stay!

    Fei2019-06-21T00:00:00Z
  • So happy to have stayed at Shannon/Gerald and Luke's Little House on the Rez... it's actually not that little! Great space to visit when traveling through Native Land. Family was very warm, welcoming, and hospitable, and the grounds were wonderfully laid-out. Directions made it very easy to get to from all over Pine Ridge Reservation (best to download Offline Google Maps of anywhere you might have trouble getting a signal though). Lots of great recommendations of places to visit while in the area. We would highly recommend to anyone looking for a place to stay in the area, or anyone visiting South Dakota and wanting to know about the Lakota People, their struggles, and their great and proud history & ongoing traditions. Thank you for everything!

    Joel2018-07-27T00:00:00Z
  • If nothing else, you should stay here for the view of the stars at night. Everything is as advertised and is a great option if you're interested in a nice spot between the Badlands and Black Hills!

    Daniel2017-08-19T00:00:00Z
  • Reasonable no frills place on Pine Ridge, close to wounded knee and the Badlands. Water, outhouse, good shelter, welcoming family, privacy and peace. After driving from the east coast, it was great to be able to let my pup run around while I sat listening to the wind watching the sun set. A beautiful drive to the badlands, it was also really nice to be able to retire after a day of exploring in a quite spot away from the crowds.

  • Even in the storm last night the tipi was awesome. Don’t chicken out! Stay if it is raining it is awesome. The composting toilet is really easy to use and doesn’t smell! Also, the dogs are awesome guard dogs and kept me company all night!

    Courtney2019-07-09T00:00:00Z
  • It's exactly what is described. A tipi on a beautiful reservation. The roads can be a little rough (but that may also be attributed to the rainstorms they'd been having recently), but if my Honda Civic can do it you can too. It's an amazing property with a tipi. Adam and Luke were amazing at hosting- showing us around, helping us out of the rain, and getting us out of the driveway in the morning. Bonus- they have cute animals (cats and dogs) on site!

    Lauren2019-07-05T00:00:00Z
  • This was a really cool camping experience! Shannon and her family definitely made us feel more than welcome.

    Emily2018-08-13T00:00:00Z
  • Road tripping from Philadelphia, we had no plans of where to stay in South Dakota. Originally considered Rapid City, but there was a bike rally and most places were booked. This place came up on the app and we sort of just went for it without knowing what to expect. Shannon was super responsive and I enjoyed meeting her daughters. I was lovingly woken up by the family cat who is awesome! Super snuggly and affectionate. If you’re okay sleeping in a Tipi on a cot/sleeping bag with a rug over grass, this is perfect for you. I actually slept really well. Best thing of all was seeing mars and the Milky Way and chatting with a guy there named Mike. If you’re looking for a new, cool, experience, stay on this Indian Reservation in a Tipi.

    Lauren2018-08-10T00:00:00Z
  • Shannon, Luke, and Gerald were warm and welcoming. I had a great experience in their tipi. The tipi is surrounded by beautiful hills and is very private. There is practically no light pollution so it’s an amazing place to see the stars and Milky Way. Rare and wonderful experience I would recommend to anyone.

    Sarah2018-08-06T00:00:00Z
  • Staying on the reservation felt like a once in a lifetime opportunity (which we hope to repeat). The tipi is simple but in the best of ways. We were able to share meals together, sit around a bonfire, learn more about life at Pine Ridge, and had a wonderful stay. I would highly recommend staying with Shannon and enjoying the beauty of a sunset and the night sky on the res!

    Kathleen2018-07-13T00:00:00Z
  • Shannon and Adam were wonderful host. The tipi provided was clean and well kept, the cots were surprisingly comfortable, and the sleeping bag and linens were clean and warm. We didn't have any equipment as we were road tripping from NYC to Montana, but Shannon was kind enough to provide us with a lantern and sleeping bags. The whole experience was awesome: the breathtaking stars at night, the amazing sunrise over the hills in the morning, Gruff, the big friendly dog, Rowdy, the little dog with a huge ego, and a very hungry, very friendly cat. Best of all was spending some time with Shannon the next morning to learn about her family, the property, and her work. Everyone there was kind and courteous. We were pretty much left to our own devices, to settle in and take care of ourselves. A worthwhile stop on our road trip and one I would love to make again.

    Matthew2017-08-19T00:00:00Z
  • We spent one night in Shannon's and Adam's tipi on our way from Colorado to the Badlands National Park. We loved the setting! Beautiful grassy hills, calm and quiet, setup right in the backyard, private and bucolic. Shannon reached out before our arrival to make sure we find our way (gps is not reliable there). We arrived with no issues, her instructions are helpful and clear. The tipi was setup for the four of us with camp beds and clean comfy warm sleeping bags. There was a picnic table right next to the tipi where we made our sandwiches and enjoyed our dinner with a view. We didn't get to see the stars as it was a stormy night! Adam closed the flap of the tipi for us to prepare for the rain and Shannon offered a hard roof place instead in case we felt insecure. The thunderstorm was indeed quite impressive and although a little rain does get into the tipi, it was not enough to spoil our stay or the night. We slept very well! If we're around the area again, we would definitely stay at Shannon's tipi again. Thank you Shannon and Adam for your hospitality!

The extremely reasonable rate of Kerry’s space as well as the photos of the newly finished apartment sold us on a stay here rather than the local inn. This cute apartment is located on the Main Street in this little town. Everything you could need in a space is available: fully stocked kitchen, living room with Roku TV, plush bed in the bedroom and a surprisingly spacious modern bathroom. Plus, Jeff and Kerry were kind enough to offer us free donuts and coffee the next morning as we checked out (they own the Daylight Donuts below the apartment as well). Cannot recommend this space enough for those looking to visit or stop in Gordon, NE!

This 16' tipi, ample space for up to 5 adults in sleeping bags. Cots are available for up to 3 people on request. 8 mi to Wounded Knee Massacre Site. Central location to explore Pine Ridge & Badlands.
How many times have you had the opportunity to sleep in a tipi on an indian reservation? Deer and coyote are often spotted crossing the site. We are also immediately adjacent to horse pastures on all sides. We are also home to a sustainable homestead model site and education center. Tours are available of our cob/strawbale hybrid home as well as our light straw clay office.
We are centrally located on the reservation. If you are coming to tour the area ours is a great spot to start off. Wounded Knee Massacre site and museum are just 8 miles away. We are 2.5 miles from a convenience store and just 3.5 miles from Betty's Kitchen a local favorite restaurant.
  • Awesome stay! Be prepared to rough it and I recommend using their cots as well as bringing your own sleeping bag :) there is no food nearby so bring your own snacks/dinner and gas up before hand. We wish we brought stuff for a fire, as there was a fireplace on the property. The sky at night was breath taking. Definitely an experience I won’t ever forget!

  • Unique experience to both sleep in a tipi on a reservation, under the stars! We experience an intense lightning and thunderstorm while in the tipi, and a little water came in as we expected since the top is open. But it was kind of exciting. And the land is beautiful and Shannon takes so much time and effort explaining all the great things she is doing here - from having a girl's camp to growing food and establishing an orchard. Was a highlight of our trip!

  • This is really a once in a lifetime opportunity! For anyone interested in getting to know the Native American culture, this is a great way to do it. In the heart of Pine Ridge reservation and minutes from Wounded Knee memorial. Our girls learned a great deal from this overnight stay in Pine Ridge. Shannon was a great host! We were lucky enough to arrive when the community had a powwow. Our youngest even danced in the powwow!! Shannon had set up a girls camp at her house the next day and invited our girls. They had a blast! As I expected, the tipi is extremely basic. Shannon had set up a carpet as well as a small cushion to sleep on inside the tipi. She also offered sleeping bags (we had our own). The outhouse is the most difficult to get used to. There is toilet paper and some water to wash hands though. Overall, we're very happy with our experience!

  • If you're looking to stargaze, this is the place to be! We stayed in one of the teepees, and though it was within eye shot of another teepee and some other cool earth-friendly dwellings where others were staying, there was plenty of privacy. Taking the advice of a previous guest, we arrived early enough the day of our visit to meet Shannon, her wonderful family, and some of the other people staying there. My kids (ages 8 and 10) loved swimming with all the other kids and jumping on the trampoline. Shannon was even so kind as to give me a tour of her food forest and home after my kids were in bed. Not only was it a wonderful experience as a novelty (staying in a teepee), but seeing conservation-minded living in full swing in non-teepee format was encouraging and inspirational. One thing to consider, the teepee hole does not have a flap to close, so we woke up with a cat and dog inside, which I thought was memorable and the kids thought was downright terrific :) If you'd like to skip that part of the experience, it might be wise to bring a blanket or ask about how to close that opening :)

  • This listing was fantastic. We had a beautiful star filled night in our lovely tipi on the plains. Shannon's family and friends were there to greet us and to help us get settled in. She also gave great directions to help us get there after our stop in Wounded Knee. We brought a cooler of food with us, which worked out well because the nearest places to eat are quite far. It was a great place to start our day the next morning when we went to Badlands, Rushmore, Crazy Horse, and Black Hills. There is a fire area, picnic tables, and outhouse located on grounds. There are also lights connecting the tipis to the other areas so you can walk around at night if needed.
