At the mouth of the North Island’s Tairua River, where it empties into the Bay of Plenty, sits the New Zealand town of Pauanui, which in Māori means “abalone.” This narrow strip of land is nearly surrounded by blue waters and covered in lush forest. If you were to observe the beachside resort area from a low-flying plane, you’d notice that most of the residences in the town’s Pauanui Waterways development are waterfront homes linked by canals, and locals commonly commute around the area by boat or kayak.

All that water provides ample opportunities to surf and swim on Pauanui Beach and kayak in Tairua River. Golfing enthusiasts will find three golf courses in town, while hikers will enjoy the numerous trails here, especially the Tairua-Pauanui Trail leading up Mount Paku. Located on the south end of the Coromandel Peninsula, Pauanui is also a great home base for exploring this scenically rugged part of the North Island, from the offshore islands to the expansive Coromandel Forest Park and the popular swimming hole at Waiau Kauri Grove.

Pauanui has a pleasant, stable climate all year round. The weather in the Coromandel area essentially does not vary much, so you won't have to compromise on activities regardless of when you visit. The warm summer days in December, January, and February present excellent weather conditions for water activities such as boating or water skiing. During the fall months of April and May, the days get a little cooler, and are great for hikes along forest trails such as the Pauanui Tairua Cycle and Walking Trail. During the winter months of June through August, temperatures remain mild, but you can shake off any chill in the hot springs at Hot Water Beach, a 45-minute drive north along the coastline.

Pauanui Summit Trail

You’ll find the trailhead for the Pauanui Summit Trail on the southern end of Pauanui Beach. The three-mile loop takes you through dense, steep forests up to the summit of Mount Pauanui. Reaching its peak requires some effort; however, once you arrive, the panoramic views of the canal settlements and the Pacific Ocean are worth it.

Tairua Harbour

The Tairua Harbour, formed where the Tairua River empties into the ocean, is a wonderful spot for relaxing, both in the water and on land. You can rent a boat and paddle along the shore, or engage in other activities like swimming, surfing, scuba diving, and kayaking. On the north shore, across the water from Pauanui, you’ll find hiking trails that lead you to the top of Mount Paku, where you’ll catch a glimpse of the Alderman Islands.

Scenic Flight

There is a small airstrip next to Pauanui Beach, and you can book a scenic 40-minute flight from the aerodrome to see the western coast of the Coromandel Peninsula, catching glimpses of Mount Paku, Mount Pauanui, Slipper Island, Alderman Islands, and the Great Mercury Islands from the air.
