Places to stay in Papua New Guinea
Our lovely apartment is set in lush gardens right in the heart of beautiful Kokopo town. Close to the market, shops and restaurants, it's the perfect base when visiting the capital of PNG's East New Britain Province. Suitable for families, friends or business travellers, you'll enjoy your home away from home.
This comfortable 2 bedroom apartment is 1 of 3 on the block. Your space is sandwiched by long-term residents on either side, so we ask you to please be mindful of your neighbours when entering and exiting the property. The entire property is secured by a high fence and manned by security. Electricity and water is included for short stays (up to one week). For longer stays, guests will need to purchase power as they use it (speak to your local host).
This is a friendly residential street that's walking distance to all you need to settle into your stay. You're able to fill up on fresh, local produce and local handicraft at reasonable prices at Kokopo Market (10 min walk). The banks, supermarkets and the post office are close (5 to 10 min walk). The stunning Ralum Country Club (golf course) is at the end of the street, near the water's edge (2 min walk). The Gazelle International Hotel has a coffee shop and different dining options, plus a gift shop (10 min walk). The Kokopo Beach Bungalow Resort has a great restaurant, gift shop and expansive deck overlooking the water (15 min walk). Once you book we'll give you a complete guide of local knowledge and recommendations!
  • Jess and Janet's bungalow is a gem right in the heart of Kokopo. It is within walking distance to the markets and centre of town. We were looked after for our whole trip and were set up with an amazing tour company to have a look around Rabaul. Would love to come back one day and highly recommend this accommodation.

  • Jessie's place was great and the best value in Kokopo. You can get a small box of a room for about the same price, but with her place you get a full apartment. I would highly recommend it. Just a short walk to the market and easy to get around with all the PMVs.

    Jerry2019-10-23T00:00:00Z
  • Wonderful serene environment to put your feet up, relax and unwind after a hard day of touring, hiking etc. Would definitely stay again!

    Steven2019-08-05T00:00:00Z
  • This was my second time staying at Jess's place and once again, everything was top notch. Great communication and extra local tips. Jess's family who live next door were always close by or available by phone when I had questions or needed advice on getting around town. The house itself is very clean, comfortable and well appointed. There is also a security guard at the gate all night, although this is just a precaution as Kokopo is a very friendly, safe place to walk around freely. I can't recommend Jess's place highly enough, if you're travelling to the Kokopo area. Don't waste your money on an expensive hotel!

  • Jess and her family made sure we felt very welcome during our stay at their place. They responded super quickly to any questions or minor issues that popped up during our trip. The property itself is neat and well appointed, making it very comfortable for 3 adults and one kid to stay. It’s central location near the market and shops was also very convenient for us and the security features were reassuring, although this area of Kokopo seemed very relaxed and safe in general. Will definitely try to rebook next time we’re in the Kokopo area! Thanks again Jess!

  • A great alternative to hotels if you enjoy some independence

  • The home is comfortable, convenient and affordable.

  • Firstly, Jessie was awesome, communication was excellent. Really good accommodation in a great location that felt safe and secure. Super friendly onsite hosts who were always there to assist when needed. Would definitely book again and wouldn’t hesitate to recommend this accommodation to others. You can rest assured that this apartment is managed by a professional.

This is my home in Gordons and it has been recently renovated. You will be sharing with my wife and I when you decide to book your accommodation with us on your travels. Our home is situated near a few embassies and high commissions, conveniently 5 minutes from the Jacksons International Airport, close to the shopping mall and other amenities. We have in our home 3 bedrooms and one bath and lots of space to host with.
We have a large open floor plan where the kitchen, living area and the dinning area are all centrally located. The bathroom and laundry to the east end of the house and the bedrooms to the west end. We don't have pay tv but do have a selection of movies available. Wifi is provided but due to the cost of internet services we discourage online streaming or large downloads. There are also no backups on site (water/power). Water outages are rare but power outages can be common at certain times of the year. Usually not for longer than a half hour at a time.
  • Amazing hospitality!

    Caleb2020-01-19T00:00:00Z
  • Really helpful, flexible, and great flexibility. Both Joshua and his wife were great.

    Justin2019-10-28T00:00:00Z
  • Joshua picked me up when my original host abandoned me at the airport. Great hospitality, a very local feel, and a comfortable stay. Highly recommended

    Jon2019-10-24T00:00:00Z
  • Wonderful people in an excellent location for a long airport layover. Went out of their way to make sure we were comfortable in our stay. Thanks to you both!

  • Great place to stay for the night whilst transitting through Port Moresby. Good cooking facilities and nice bedroom. Within walking distance of a big supermarket.

    Pippa2019-09-06T00:00:00Z
  • Joshua and Sharon were fantastic hosts. We felt like we were welcomed into their home (close to the airport and in a safe neighbourhood) and made to feel super safe. From the airport pick up and visit to the local supermarket to cooking dinner for us and brewing early morning coffees - both Joshua and Sharon went out of their way to make us feel at ease. Joshua was very responsive before our arrival and we would absolutely stay with Joshua and Sharon when we (inevitably) return to Papua New Guinea!

    Mital2019-04-21T00:00:00Z
  • Joshua's place is not a guest house. you will be living with, and treated as part of the family. you get a simple private room in a fairly spacious one storey house with common areas shared with the family. i didnt find this inconvenient as i felt at home from the very beginning of my stay. the facilities, including fridge, stove, washing machine, tv etc, are all in good condition and available to use. joshua made sure i had wifi access which is not easy to get in PNG. the location, in a nice, safe neighbourhood, although quite far from the city center is easy to access from the airport and within walking distance of the national museum, the interesting parliament building and the biggest mall in port moresby. acess to the city center is by bus a short walk from the homestay. all in all if you are looking for a homestay stay in port moresby or just dont fancy paying for an over priced hotel then this is an excellent option.

    Jack2019-03-27T00:00:00Z
  • This was my 2nd stay at Joshua's home, just for 1 night, after returning from the provinces. They take good care of their guests, treating them as one of the family. Thanks Josh!

With picturesque views of Mt. Giluwe & Mt. Ialibu, this modern, fully-contained double story house is perfect place to stay, whether travelling alone or in a group. There are also traditional village huts (Tok Pisin: kunai haus) situated in the backyard as well, if you want to experience a typical, rural setting. I have listed that min. stay is 3 nights & max. stay is 5 nights HOWEVER I can also accomodate for longer stays as well-be sure to let me know!
Situated in Koromi village, a small rural township in Ialibu, Southern Highlands Province (SHP), this town is one of the most peaceful and easy-going places in the Highlands Region of Papua New Guinea.
This property is situated in front of the highway road. There is a rural village community few blocks down from the property. There are no streets, rather just chunks of land with property on it, so one wouldn't classify it as a "neighbourhood". This property is located in Kuli village (Ialibu District), which is a very calm & peaceful area with lots of friendly locals.

  • On arrival I was picked up from the airport, great service! This was great spot, nice and quiet, just a short walk into town, and just across the road from the water, where you can watch the sun go down. The house was had everything I required for my stay, and there is a backup generator, for when the power goes out. When in Kavieng next, I will stay here again.

  • This place is able to have a valuable experience. Thanks to Simon and the staff, staying in Kokopo and Rabaul has become more and more attractive. Simon hoped to know the real Papua New Guinea and had a lot of experiences. The stay is homestay type and you can experience a real jungle life. I've used Airbnb many times so far, but this is the first time that I've done a variety of hospitality. Simon and the staff were very friendly and tried to deal with any problems immediately. This time, when I visited this part of Papua New Guinea, as far as I know, all other travelers were using the hotel. I don't say that the hotel is badly used, but I've come to Kokopo and Rabaul. Among them, this Wairiki 4 is in the jungle at the back of the mountain far from the town, and I think that it is the best place for a special experience. It is worth using at least once during your stay. I recommend!

    Takuya2019-10-09T00:00:00Z
  • This is by far one of the best if not the best Airbnb experience I ever had. Simon which is the chief of his village and all his direct family as well as everyone I encountered in his village treated me like family. I felt very very safe even though I’m a very attractive girl who travels alone. Simon helped me get to all the tourist attractions and back and forth from the airport. His family cooked me their cultural meals and performed cultural dances. They even invited me to try their dance. On the last day the villagers came and played goodbye songs and I honestly left with tears in my eyes with the amount of love and kindness I was given. He had Mosquito repellent and the beds have nets to protect you from it too. During the day you can go on nature walks or take the bus to the tourist sites. The price you will pay is so little compared to what you will get so if you have some extra clothes, shoes or children books please bring to donate. They don’t ask for anything, charges very little and give sooooo much. The teachers have been working for free for 11 years now because the government stoped paying them and the people in the village who have so little means to live are the ones supporting them. These are the most amazing people you can ever meet. And probably one of the most unforgettable experiences of your life💕

It's a simple shed/living quarters. A single room. Floor is basically dirt (ground). The perfect place for those who wish to experience genuine local living. It's not cosy. Its rough and tough. Outdoor shower and pit toilet. Shared local meals cooked over open fire. 10 minutes from the Airport.
The place is located at least 20 minutes walk from the beach.
My Shed is located in a new residential development area. Close to the sea.
  • I stayed with Ahulo and his family for five nights and had an amazing time! Ahulo consistently went out of his way to make me feel comfortable in his home, show me around Port Moresby, and help me plan the rest of my trip in PNG. We became great friends in just a few days. He's a kind and funny guy with a very sweet family. He showed me all the sights in Port Moresby and we even rented a car for a day and visited Varirata national park with his two young daughters. I highly recommend staying with Ahulo if you're looking for a unique travel experience and interested in learning about and meeting the people of PNG. This home stay was educational, exciting, and fun! Thanks again Ahulo-- See you next time!

  • His house was a good place. And his house is guarded by guards and clever dogs. His house is near the city center, market, super, tour office, and so on. JP is a good person! Because he cooked me a delicious breakfast and dinner. And, he introduced me tour office which has Japanese lady because I'm Japanese! And,he accepted me in spite of I can't speak English enough. • John-Paul's place is incredible! It's really modern and clean and probably the best shower I've had in the whole country, specially after a long ride with PMV. He's really helpful, even though he was not In Goroka by that time but his girlfriend is incredibly charming and we had some great time together. Highly recommended, and definitely the best place in Goroka.

    Xiwen2019-10-08T00:00:00Z
  • John Paul is a really nice host. He is helpful, and made really hard efforts to make his guests feeling relaxed and welcome. His apartment was clean, his Kitchen was well equipped, and we could use the washing machine for free. The properly has security guards 24/7 and it's close to everything. Shops, the main market, The Goroka Show Area and even the airport (!) was in walking distance. This is the best place I could have stayed in Goroka!

This is a coperative effort and will involve the community collectively.
Power is provided via a small generator for necessities only with a solar standby. Most other facilities including shower, toilet and washing are all outdoor. Beddings, meals. Toiletries are all provided for.

Setting is a quiet, spacious and relaxing one, away from all outside and western influence. Just nature, time and the beauty of sunshine and scenery. We will also take you to scenic sunrise hiking to Pasipasi and Kwabunaki to mention a few. You will also get to see the historical landing site of The First Anglican Missionaries and other legends and history of the land. You will witness the ancient irrigation and taro cultivation first hand and taste the best taro dishes. We will delight you with the display of our mystical traditional dance that will get you off you feet at the site and sound of beauty. If you are lucky, you can catch this and a variety others during the "PNG National Kenu and Kundu Festival" hosted in Alotau town in the month of October. A home away from home! Right along a scenic drive to the main town center our home is in a peaceful neighborhood, close to markets and the beach. • I had a wonderful stay with Nadia and Thomas (Joshua's co-hosts), they are exceptional hosts going out of their way to make my stay enjoyable. The accommodation is in a separate fully equipped house with bedroom, bathroom, kitchen and living/dining room. There was always someone available to pick me up from the airport or drive me around or take me to a restaurant, or accompany me on day trips. Recommended!

Relax in a fully renovated home with a spacious lounge, shared cooking facility and hot water. Located in the heart of Mt. Hagen City in a friendly neighborhood.
The house has a backup water supply, a must in Mt. Hagen with unexpected water outage. Television is available and a study table for your convenience.
My neighborhood is one of the warmest in Mt. Hagen. With a family orientated community, you will always be greeted with a smile and people would want to start up a conversation with you.

  • Bessie"s home is nestled in a beautiful village on the outskirts of Madang. It is surrounded by lush gardens with bountiful tropical fruits. Take a swim in the lagoon or go for a walk amongst the palms and wide sniles will follow you through the village. Bessie is a fantastic host and helped to make my stay very special. I will be back.

The property is a 3 bedroom house in a safe and quiet suburb, 10 minutes drive from Port Moresby international airport, busstop and shops. The kitchen is available with an oven, 5 burner stove, big 2 door fridge, microwave, rice cooker, jug, blender, tooster and dishwasher. The owner can also cook traditional PNG food if interested for dinner. Breakfast and lunch can also be provided for a small fee. Friendly and affordable cab drivers can be available if you need to go around the city.
We also provide tours around Port Moresby city from coastal villages to the awesome Sogeri Plateau. The tours include the Nature park, Parliament house, the National Museum, and Variarata Park. It depends on how long you will be in Port Moresby city. We also can organise tours in other provinces in PNG from the highlands to the coast. Ask us for details.
My house is in a friendly and safe neighbourhood. My house is in a housing estate suburb and only 10 minutes drive from Jacksons International Airport and 15 minutes drive from CBD.
  • Carolyn’s place offered local insights and a variation of experiences that I would not have received at a hotel. I learned a lot about history and culture of PNG thanks to my hosts generously giving up time from their daily schedules to sit down for a chat.

  • Wonderful host who even cooked the Christmas dinner for me, I totally enjoy the stay.

  • Nice place in the suburb of Port Moresby. Had a big challenge finding the place by taxi and needed to find a local person with WhatsApp to get in touch with the owner as it was not possible to connect by normal phone call - saying this, you won’t have the same problems as we did if you have access to internet/WiFi. All this due to some unclear communication to if we were picked up at the airport or not. When we finally got to the place - we found out they’d been at the airport but a bit late... Anyway- all this said the house/room is as the photos with a nice bathroom. Really nice to sit out on the balcony with a nice breeze. We were taken on a drive into and around the city - great to be able to see a bit - even though we only stayed for a short time! Thank you very much for showing us around Robbie - and taking care of us whilst staying!

  • Carolyn's place is all you could ask for if you're looking for a local PNG experience! I had a great time, her son cooked us amazing local kaikai and she was nice enough to show us around the city & local markets! Great hospitality & thanks again for the great experience, look forward to visiting again, lukim iufala soon!

    Chantelle2019-10-26T00:00:00Z
  • Carolyn’s place was amazing!! From the great hospitality to the traditional PNG cuisine she cooked from dinner, she made sure to make me feel at home. Would definitely recommend for a short or long term stay when in POM.

    Caleb2019-10-25T00:00:00Z
  • I cannot praise Carolyn’s place enough It was indeed the perfect place to stay for me I could stay in my room and have some rest and quiet time to myself or I could walk out into the kitchen or the living room and be welcomed as one of the family. I never felt either isolated or intruded upon. I could cook for myself or for a reasonable cost be invited to the family table where much laughter and cultural exchanges were to be enjoyed. The only thing I am worried about is that next time I want to come, there may be no vacancies because the word has got out of how great hosts Carolyn and her family are.

    Alan2019-10-02T00:00:00Z
  • Carolyn is lovely host together with her family, I felt more home as part of her family while there with my mother. The place is super clean, I had access to her kitchen, work space and printer, and sat with her family to watch TV. Carolyn and husband offered us dinner as well which I felt honoured to dine with them. Highly recommend their place to others looking for airbnb in Port Moresby as it very affordable.

    Veronica2019-09-12T00:00:00Z
  • Carolyn and her husband welcomed us very warm-hearted. They shared their family story with us and their culture! They cooked for us traditional food as well. We were picked up from the Airport and even brought there early in the morning. As they both originate in PNG highlands and have contacts all over PNG they can organize tours for you and are happy to visit POM with you for a little fee. We almost felt like family members and will stay in contact! If you want to surprise Robert, bring some seldom foreign coins and his eyes will shine:-) very happy to meet these people from PNG!

  • Jana is an amazing host, always there when you need her. Her facilities are great, offers the cheapest airport transfers as well (much cheaper than local cabs) . She even offered my friends and I are few free rides into town. We also were taken care off with complimentary breakfast & Tea/Coffee. Jane's place is a really great value for money. Would not hesitate to recommend more friends to stay at hers jn future as well. Thank you Jane.

  • Jane and her family are wonderful and they really opened up their home to me. Jane went out of her way to help me out so I can go diving out of Alotau. I had a great stay and even though I spent more time in the house and with Jane and her family than I had planned I really enjoyed it there, hopefully I wasn't in the way. Thanks for having me and thanks for showing me different parts around Alotau!

  • Staying with Joel and his family has been a wonderful experience. Definitely an adventure but well worth the trip. They were so kind to our family and the love the children.

    Clarice2019-12-31T00:00:00Z
  • Staying at Joel's place has been one of the best experiences of my life. He lives on a paradise island with all his relatives and they welcomed me as a family member from day 1. Living conditions are very simple and pure and you get to experience the life of a fisherman community in PNG. This is certainly not a typical airbnb, you need to have an open mind and be ready for some adventure. We ate fresh fish every day and was given a wooden canoe to explore the place. We went fishing at night, hanged out with all the kids and other inhabitants of the island. Everyone was incredibly welcoming and genuinely excited to have visitors. Joel provided all the peace of mind that one can hope for when visiting PNG for the first time. There is so much misinformation online, that finding someone like Joel to help out makes a huge difference. He picked me up from the airport and took amazing care of me during the whole trip. He even helped me find a place to stay when I went to visit the north of the country and checked in with me constantly. We still stay in touch and have became good friends. I hope to go back soon.

    Chris2019-11-29T00:00:00Z
  • I visited here on a whim and it turned out to be one of my favorite travel experiences of all time. It is 100% authentic and you can really experience local life. Everyone is incredibly friendly and eager to have a conversation with you. Go in with an open mind and you will have an experience that you will never forget. I stayed for 4 days but could have stayed longer and I'd suggest staying for as long as you can. Truly one of the most unforgettable experiences of my life and something I feel lucky to have been able to do!

    Jon2019-10-26T00:00:00Z
  • We stayed at Joels family house on Fisherman Island and it was wonderful to be there, to spend time talking and learning about life on the island. Jenny looked after us providing a delicious lunch, dinner and breakfast. We visited the nearby islands by boat and took walks through the village. It is a relief compared to PM - quiet, laid back, safe and beautiful. Everyone was welcoming and I wish we had had more time there.

  • (Pub review for Malolo) For any traveller enjoying Airbnb or PNG local life, I highly recommend Malolo Haven and its hosts, Pharpsie & Mag, Fiona, Deb - you can experience the '1-tok' family style of Airbnb. 1. Very friendly and helpful with anything from trip plans to even business talks including visa/business consultations as of their other business service. 2. WIFI access is very important in PNG as the mobile phone network often goes down with any Service providers. 3. Local shopping & own cooking is also possible, talk to the hosts and it can be organised. 4. General room cleaning is done with new towels daily basis, if you need anything just ask and talk to the hosts - they are very friendly and resourceful. 5. Very Spacious front deck and living room (open) for inviting friends or even business talks with local people. 6. Nice filling breakfast 7. This place continues to add up more features. If any missing important feature, ask to the hosts and they would assist to their best capacity. 8. Very responsible and responsive hosts and management system. 9. Easily accessible by car, ATS - left - left. Own secured carpark and gate. I will definitely visit Malolo Haven, and the hosts for my next PNG trip. This place is like - Ask and you shall receive it.
