Places to stay in Hillswick
The Seabarn has a great view. It's a very ecologically modernised 17c barn well insulated and heated. Warm and cosy. Lovely design and well appointed
The Old Sea Barn in Hillswick, Shetland.Opened on the 1st of June 2011 Direct access to the beach..The sea for breakfast..All on one level, with a high standard of design and finishing...Super cosy. Fabulous very high quality 17c barn conversion. One bedroom and a mezzanine.Sleeps four comfortably, but six at a push. Two bathrooms one en-suite.Fantastic sea view, with direct beach (website hidden) the village of Hillswick, Shetland. Central heating, phone and wifi General information £70 per night for whole house, electricity linen and towels included. The seabarn has a website with lots of info about the local area, links, things to do, (website hidden)/the-old-sea-barn-in-hillswick(phone number hidden) and it has a(website hidden)page (website hidden)(phone number hidden) Sometimes you can see an otter, who runs up past the beach and past the window... Northmavine is an outstanding place of natural beauty, with true wilderness ( the only tundra in Britain). There is the best coastal walking in Shetland here, from the well known cliffs and remote splendour of Eshaness, to the haunting beauty of Fedaland and Uyea. There are many prehistoric sites to be found both in North Mavine and the rest of Shetland and in fact one is just about a mile up the hill from the house. Northmavine also has excellent loch fishing and permits are easily obtained and inexpensive. There are also two very interesting golf courses near to Lerwick, a nine hole and an eighteen hole and one on the island of Whalsay, which is a real challenge. We have an excellent local Craft Shop, in Hillswick, Oily Muggie. There is a restaurant locally the Braewick Cafe. and in Hillswick, the historic St Magnus Bay hotel which supplies the best homemade chips north of Frankies fish and chip shop in Brae. There is also the historic Busta House Hotel locally in Brae. There is a local community shop in Hillswick for food (3 miles), and one in Ollaberry for food and fuel (6 miles). There is a breakdown garage in Ollaberry. Brae has a CO-OP and two garages, one of which does fuel also. There is a bus service to Lerwick twice in the morning, at 7.30 am and at 10 am except Wednesday and Sunday, returning at 5 pm. Wildlife Simon King , the Wildlife Photographer stayed locally in Northmavine in 2009 or some time, whilst filming his Shetland Diaries. The beach below South House known as the Blade is a good place to look out for otters, as well as being a home for Arctic Terns from May until August. The Hillswick Wildlife Sanctuary as featured can be visited locally.
It's in the village, but great access to fab walks, a good wee community shop, and petrol and the local hotel for evening meals. There is a beach right beside us.
  • Great experience. Kenji speaks good English and is friendly and helpful.

  • The Sea Barn is a lovely home from home. Great little kitchen/dining area for delicious home cooking (local store has all the essentials), comfy, cozy bedrooms and amazing views from living room. Whether you're looking to hole up and escape or get out and explore, you'll love the barn. We'd definitely consider returning.

  • For a peaceful stay in the wilds of the north, with long walks, and wide open vistas, a stay at the Seabarn is for you. The house is cosy and comfortable, with everything provided for a carefree break. A convenient shop with a fuel pump, and a local hotel with bar and dining room, ensure most creature comforts are catered for.

  • It was an awesome experience biking in the countryside of Inabe. Kenji was very knowledgeable and he provided tips, trivia and recommendations for different places in the area. Don't forget to wear sunscreen! Overall, a great experience - highly recommended!

    Ian2019-09-04T00:00:00Z
  • When I ran through nature on a bicycle, the sky looked more beautiful. Wind, coolness, green beauty, river sound when passing through the forest. I was healed all over my body. And it was fun that my host Kenji talked to me.

"Pirrie Snabuil” overlooks Magnus Bay and the beautiful sandy beach of West Ayre, you are two minutes’ walk from the local shop, the Wildlife sanctuary, craft shop & hotel
Margaret & Jeff welcome you to their recently renovated and unique Shetland studio cottage, situated in the rural village of Hillswick in the Northmavine area of the Shetland Isles. "Pirrie Snabuil" can be your holiday haven, with artistic and organic tactile sculptures you can drift into your inner peace or take in the surrounding beauty by foot or bicycle or enjoy a quiet glass of wine in the sheltered garden.
  • With easy access to points on the north end of this island, and to both islands of Yell and Unst, this stunningly beautiful cottage, including a view I couldn't stop taking pictures of, is comfortable and clean. Margaret and Jeff are delightful hosts who left thoughtful touches throughout including fresh flowers, soft and fluffy towels, and lots of warm bedding for cool Shetland nights. I hope to stay again the next time I'm in Shetland. Be sure to check out the views behind the cottage too--there's a berm that they've built to protect from the wind and it's the perfect place to watch the sunset. Their garden is a sight to see as well. I could not have asked for a better place.

    Jeanne2019-10-08T00:00:00Z
  • We had a fantastic time with wild walks and wonderful wildlife. The accommodation is very comfortable, modern and stylish with everything we needed. Jeff made us very welcome and couldn't have been more helpful. This is a perfect place to stay, we thoroughly recommend it.

    Louise2019-09-20T00:00:00Z
  • Pirrie Snabuil is such a special place ♥️- inside and outside so beautiful. It was the best place, we could find for these dreamlike holidays. The small cottage is perfect for two persons. It is equipped with a wonderful taste and a warm heart, a lot of creative mind in it and around the house- there is everything you could need. From the garden you see two beaches, you have got a little place to enjoy this and your coffee or wine for yourself- it is incredible ... Margaret and Jeff are wonderful hosts- cautious when needed and wonderful in contact. From this place you can start so many awesome tours, the landscape is breathtaking. Now we are at home again and we will miss this place all our life- but we are happy, that we had this wonderful time, Thank you both so much, Margaret and Jeff!!

    Sabine2019-09-16T00:00:00Z
  • A great private, well appointed self catering accommodation for 2. Close to the community shop which is well stocked. Highly recommended.

    Rodney2019-08-30T00:00:00Z
  • This is an absolutely wonderful place, both the built home and the warmth of the caretakers. Jeff and Margaret take extremely good care of everything: the apartment is very well kept up, with all the amenities one needs for cooking and cleaning. Jeff, who is a master woodworker, has built beautiful things out of driftwood. He is extremely responsive if there are any issues, from laundry to directions. He gives excellent recommendations about places to eat and visit. The view is nothing short of spectacular: Jeff has built a little viewing platform outside where one gazes at the sheep, the luscious grass, the cliffs and the beach. Hillswick is a charming little village, with a great general store and well situated for exploring in Shetland!

    Suzanne2019-08-16T00:00:00Z
  • We came back for the second time to Pirrie Snabuil, and it's always beautiful to spend time relaxing in the garden looking the bay, or walking around. Jeff & Margaret are very welcoming and it's nice to chat with them.

    Laura2019-08-08T00:00:00Z
  • Margaret and Jeff are perfect hosts. Its a beautiful house, with wonderful views. You can start hikes directly from the garden or enjoy the views from a terrace down to the beaches.

    Martina2019-07-12T00:00:00Z
  • Pirrie Snabuil is both a work of art and a very comfortable, suberbly located base for discovering Hillswick and its surroundings. Thanks to the local community run shop and the amenities provided in the house, we had everything we needed for a self catering holiday. We didn’t have a car so were not intending to go very far but in fact were able to do day trips to Sumburgh Head and Eshaness using the excellent bus system. We spent quite a lot of time just enjoying the house, its views and magical garden. We also did some wonderful walks around Hillswick.

Set within a large private garden with uninterrupted sea views, Gerdi is beautifully appointed with spacious comfortable rooms. Situated within easy walking distance of a sandy beach, local shop and hotel it is the ideal location to explore the stunning North Mavine scenery
Built in 2008 to a high standard, Gerdi sits within 1/2 acre of rough grass and well maintained flower beds - not common in Shetland - with willows providing shelter. There is disabled ramp access to the ground floor which consists of kitchen/dining room, living room, 2 double bedrooms (one with en-suite), bathroom and utility room. The kitchen is well equipped with electric hob and fan oven, microwave, fridge\freezer and dish washer. There is a separate utility room with washing machine, tumble dryer and freezer. The living room has 2 large windows giving panoramic sea views with comfortable seating for 6, but will accommodate more. Both double bedrooms have large built in wardrobes with the master bedroom having an en-suite shower and toilet. Upstairs there is a spacious twin bedroom and a bathroom with shower and toilet. There is also another double bedroom upstairs, so the house can sleep 8, howeverthe dining table can only seat 6 comfortably but 8 at a push. Outside there is a beautiful flower garden as well as a drying green and an area of natural grassland. Otters have been observed just below the house and birds of all types can be seen and on one memorable occasion a humpback whale feeding in the voe was viewed from the living room window.
Hillswick is a small village but has all the essential amenities, there is a community shop which opens 7 days a week and stocks all the essentials as well as fuel, the St Magnus Bay hotel has a bar and restaurant and there is also an art gallery, Wildlife sanctuary and craft shop. North Mavine, where Hillswick is situated is the least densely populated area of Shetland and is renowned for it's rugged beauty. There are many beautiful coastal walks nearby, Hillswick Ness is right on the door step and Eshaness, Ronas Hill, Fethaland and Uyea only a short drive away. Details for local walks are in an information folder in the property.
  • Beautiful home close to all amenities in Hillswick. Very helpful and kind owners

    Donna2020-02-24T00:00:00Z
  • A great location with excellent views of sea and distant cliffs from my chair in the living room. I spent many a happy moment watching the Atlantic swell crash against the cliffs. Very clean house with accurate descriptions and an amazing helpful host. I would use this house again if visiting Shetland. Quiet, well furnished and easy to find.

  • Beautiful location and wonderful house. We enjoyed the view of the sea. Hilswick is a nice village with a supermarket and a hotel where you can eat well. From the house you can take a nice walk along the coast. We have seen many seals. The house could not be better. Very nice owners and wonderful beds. From the house you can view the north of Shetland. The north is very beautiful.

  • What a fabulous place, great location and Josie is a great host. The Croft house is quite remote but Josie provides first class directions that make it almost impossible to go wrong. The location has great views and is ideal for those wanting a quiet getaway. However, Brae is less than 15 minutes away for any supplies you may need. Perfect location to explore the northern parts of Shetland, and Toft ferry terminal for access to Yell and Unst is less than 30 minutes away. Even the south, eg Sumburgh, is only a little over an hour. The house has everything you need and is well equipped, and the sofa is incredibly comfortable. An ideal place for one or two people. Josie was incredibly quick to reply to messages. One of the best places I’ve stayed at and will definitely stay again

    Rob2019-10-09T00:00:00Z
  • Josie’s cottage is a lovely, cosy space that is fitted with fantastic amenities. The surrounding fields and coast make you feel like you’re enjoying the real Shetland from the comfort of a lovely cottage. The place itself is very stylish and beautiful. We really enjoyed our stay here!

  • A place to relax and enjoy the remoteness of the property. The view from the bedroom window was stunning. Especially while you are having your early morning tea in bed !!!!

    David2019-09-27T00:00:00Z
  • Josie’s croft is cozy (super comfy sofa in front of the fireplace) and nicely decorated, with all the amenities needed. We loved the location and the views. Josie has plenty of tips on things to see and do in the area and communication with her was super. Thanks again!

    Stephanie2019-09-22T00:00:00Z
  • I’ve had such a lovely time in your cosy Cottage while the wind howled outside and the fire roared inside- it was Great. Then the beautiful calm after the storm and full moon across the Voe. So peaceful and tranquil. 😃 Thank You Josie, X

  • This cosy croft made for an excellent holiday!!

    Helen2019-09-14T00:00:00Z
  • Had such a lovely time at Josie's, it's quiet but very close to Brae for local shops, and easy to get to Lerwick or the ferries for sight seeing! The house is gorgeous too, I meant to ask where the animal cushions were from!

    Frank2019-08-31T00:00:00Z
  • Magical. Fairytale-like place. So quiet and peaceful, cozy and nice. Amazing sofa, so spacious and snuggling. Perfect for people who seek tranquility. Setting up the fire, drinking tea from the big-enough mug, watching sheep graze and then pass by the window on their way home, the sea... plain fantastic.

  • If you are looking for peace and quiet with fantastic views and fantastic drives and walks then book this cottage. It has a comfy bed, lovely log burner, it’s very very clean, great bedding. It’s location is superb, there’s a local shop which has everything you need, the North Isles ferry is not far if you want to venture to Yell / Unst and Eshaness is a must ! 15 mins to Brae where you have loads of amenities - including a pub and a co op supermarket plus fish and chips ! Absolute gem !

    Keith2020-03-11T00:00:00Z
  • The croft is quiet and cosy. The views form the bedroom skylights and front windows are amazing. You definitely need a car to get about and be prepared for narrow roads (there’s so little traffic it’s easy to negotiate though). Definitely recommend.

  • We were after a getaway where we didn’t have to be time bound or be bound at all to anything. This was like our wish turned into a perfect reality. Felt like a thousand steps closer to nature and it was amazing to wake up to the ever beautiful lake. Loved the chickens and Of course Eva the 20 year old sheep!! Amazing Croft house and lovely hosts!! Btw Bruce - we had a chance to speak to your son and to your grandson Joe!! Such lovely people. We would be so lucky if our minds somehow bring us here again!! Until next time Raghav and Priyanka

  • This is a perfect place for rest and relaxation or for travel and walking, it's well equipped and very cosy, with everything you need for a wonderful holiday. The location is stunning, with the most amazing views all round. It's very easy to get around, and the house, anyway, is pithing walking distance of Brae. Carolyn is so lovely and very helpful. I don't think she could have done more for us. She is the perfect host. Cannot recommend this place highly enough.

    Kerry2020-02-22T00:00:00Z
  • I loved it here so peaceful and very kind host

    Amanda2020-02-02T00:00:00Z
  • Carolyn's Cottage is absolutely the best spot to experience all that Shetland has to offer. Carolyn herself is a wonderful person and the cottage is perfectly appointed with all the small touches that made it immediately feel like home! We couldn't have had a better time. This cottage is perfectly positioned to get into Lerwick but also to see Brae and go on some wonderful hikes. Great spot for stargazing and birdwatching. Carolyn even gave us insiders information on Up-Helly-Aa. Had some wonderful sunrises from the cottage and cannot wait for our next trip to Shetland... rebooking at Carolyn's Cottage of course! Thank you to Carolyn for the wonderful hospitality. -Carolyn and James

  • A warm welcome in a cosy well equipped cottage with wonderful views.

    Val2020-01-15T00:00:00Z
  • Carolyn's place is a great place to stay. A comfortable cottage at a perfect location to explore the island. We felt at home, immediately.

    Claudia2019-10-07T00:00:00Z
  • Simply wonderful. Nothing more to be said. The weather was wild and wet, but our welcome couldn't have been warmer. One of our bags went astray, but Carolyn sorted us out with some kit to allow us two days of walking that we could have so easily missed out on.. The cottage has everything you need: it's warm, very comfortable and stylish. We hope to return.

    Jill2019-09-26T00:00:00Z
  • Great location for exploring central and northern Mainland of Shetland. Plenty of excellent walks within a short car journey. Reasonable Co-op store in Brae only a couple of miles up the road. Very quite location with views of the surrounding hills and sea. Comfortable property which is well fitted out. Friendly host/owner close by.

    Alan2019-09-20T00:00:00Z
  • We loved staying at Carolyn's place. The house is well situated to visit the west and north of the main island, and also the ferries that go to Unst and Yell. We had already spent several days in Lerwick to be close to the south end of the island and the town itself, but the drive into Lerwick was not far at all, so we actually ended up going back to Lerwick a couple of times as well. Communication with Carolyn was excellent. She was very helpful throughout. Everything is spotlessly clean and there is just about everything you could ever need in the kitchen. All mod cons, as the British say! We loved the fact that there are about 50 sheep right beside the house and they would sometimes come to great us when we got back at the end of the day. Very charming. Can't say enough about this lovely rental. Don't hesitate.

Located at the very heart of Shetland, with spectactular views & abundant nature, Orwick Lodge is a great base for exploring the Shetland Islands. Minutes from quiet rural beaches, the famous Hams o Roe, trying to spot an otter passing the window or waking up to Shalders on the patio, in 2018 Shetland had 2 pods of Orcas circumnavigating the islands. At evening you can enjoy the award winning Frankies fish & chips, enjoy complimentary mussels from our farm, or seek out Shetland music.
Located within central Shetland, rural yet convenient, great views and nature. The property is modern, 4 star for facilites, 5 star for cleanlines. Air source heat pump provides eco-sustainable underfloor heating.
Muckle Roe is quiet, with great views and amazing to explore.
  • Fabulous lodge in a stunning location. Cosy yet spacious, very well equipped, and wonderfully peaceful. Definitely a find.

The Hoop is a very comfortable house in a stunning situation looking out over St Magnus Bay in Eshaness - perhaps the most unspoilt and beautiful part of mainland Shetland.
The views from the house include the famous landmarks of The Drongs, the Braewick cliffs and The Doreholm which has a massive natural arch. Foula and Papa Stour can be seen on most days.
There are good places for picnics and bathing (for the brave or perhaps in wet suits) at the beaches close by. Sea going kayaks can be hired and sea fishing and sight-seeing boat trips can be arranged.
  • The Hoop has provided excellent accommodation, more than we expected, and best of all the daily views of the bay, as the early mornings gave way to spectacular weather changes, made the location of the house the best choice. A generously furnished home recommended for all to come back to!

  • This was by far the best place we have ever stayed at. The house is so comfortable and inviting that we never wanted to leave. The location is stunning with a little beach nearby with tons of seals and shells for the kids. Great hikes pretty much any direction you like and an extensive library that made it all the more difficult to get out the door and explore the rest of Shetland. Everything you could possibly need was there for you. Thank you so much for sharing your lovely home with us! We will definitely be back.

  • The St Magnus Hotel is a very special place indeed. The hotel presents an authentic olde worlde atmosphere, with a fascinating history, combined with modern attractive finishings and fittings. Located in a place of outstanding beauty. With local walks and wildlife accessible directly from the hotel doorstep. Well deserved reputation for a great Sunday lunch. With overall service and advice provided in a warm and friendly manner. Cannot recommend highly enough.

  • John is a fantastic host and the apartment is even better than it looks from the pictures, with a beautiful view over the sea, especially at sunset: One reason to come back to Shetland!

  • Absolutely stunning location! Very close to the inter island ferry. We loved our stay!

    Sarah2019-08-14T00:00:00Z
  • Gorgeous location. Very comfortable accommodation for 3 people. John made our Shetland visit so memorable. He is great company & as a Shetlander born & bred shared interesting stories. Also helped me to get in touch with a distant relative & find a family gravestone before we arrived. Also appreciated thoughtfulness in providing yummy food items. We only stayed two nights. Not long enough! Recommend a longer stay!

    Glenda2019-08-10T00:00:00Z
  • John is a very friendly and easy going host. The flat was just as advertised and had everything required for us to be comfortable and able to cook our dinners.

Fabulous quirky very old crofthouse with a glorious view over Ronas Voe with a view of Ronas Hill, above a stony beach.
Our quirky very old renovated crofthouse has a great view, warm and cosy with peat fires, plenty beds and 2 bathrooms will sleep 9 comfortably. The view from the flower porch is fabulous. Linen and towels included. Great for families and those wanting to explore. This is a great wee traditional renovated and insulated croft house above the shore at Ronas Voe. Built in the ? 16c no kitchen or toilet until we renovated it in 1994 it used to be our full time home where we brought our children up. There are some of the original bits of furniture still there including Shetland chairs, and a bed which was in the house when we first went there. There are some very low ceilings and doors, and ( smokey) peat fires when its not a flying gale, and the comfort of electric central heating. It has one of the best views on the planet, a beach directly below the house and occasionally otters can be seen. It's also a great place for birdwatchers as arctic terns nest on the beach from May until September, stargazers and to see the Northern lights when they are out, and weather.. We have plenty of that! One of our children James when grown up was on the 'Great British Bake Off' and described his childhood as idyllic, and it is gloriously peaceful there. And fishing.. If you are after a peaceful fishing holiday, or kayaking, its lovely. There is a washing machine, gas cooker, dishwasher, two bathrooms, with baths and one electric shower, and beds for 9 comfortably. Two doubles, a triple, a twin and a mezzanine with a futon. There is tons of linen provided. And towels . There is a pulley in the bathroom for drying things. Electric and gas are included. There is a landline, and wifi, and a telly which all work mostly , but being Shetland occasionally don't . We are both working ( me at the surgery, Tom at the bookshop, or writing) but will do our best to help you with things and are available by phone for help and advice and there is a website and(website hidden)page for the house . (website hidden) You will probably need transport, car or motorbike. ( there is car hire available at both Sumburgh airport and at the ferry). The house is remote! And thats part of its lovely charm. I would advise a visit to the supermarket on route at Brae, (10 miles )or in Lerwick ( 35 miles), but we have a great wee community shop in Hillswick for a lot of things, including fresh fish, a hotel and cafes nearby. And my husband Tom runs the 'last bookshop' in Hillswick, in our house. Southhouse has a website, if you (SENSITIVE CONTENTS HIDDEN) it. There are lots of wonderful walks nearby too, and a nice sandy beach in Hillswick. There are a few surprising things to take home too, whether its a nice pebble off the beach, or one of silversmith Esme Wilcocks starfish. Or the pegs at the shop, which will withstand a force ten gale, or one of Tom Mortons books ! ( from Hillswick or Urafirth) Wildlife Simon King , the Wildlife Photographer stayed locally in Northmavine in 2009 or some time, whilst filming his Shetland Diaries. The beach below South House known as the Blade is a good place to look out for otters, as well as being a home for Arctic Terns from May until August. The Hillswick Wildlife Sanctuary as featured can be visited locally.
Its remote and lovely, above a beach, and there is wildlife locally, otters... Its a beautiful spot with a fantastic uninterrupted view of the sea. • This was a great location and was exactly what we were looking for. The property it self was very quirky with lots of different rooms leading off one an other. The house was very warm and clean. The view was outstanding.

    Murray2020-02-25T00:00:00Z
  • It’s a bit out of the way, but worth it. The views are incredible with a quiet secluded feel. The sheep along the road are a fun bonus.

    Donna2019-10-05T00:00:00Z
  • We loved our stay at the cottage, it's much bigger than we expected and a really lovely old traditional house. The location is stunning and not too far from Brae where there is a supermarket to get everything you need. The only small thing was that the two double beds in the house appear to be falling apart so they squeak quite a lot if you make even the slightest movement. Apart from that it was a wonderful stay and we'd love to go back. Car is a necessity.

    Carrie2019-09-13T00:00:00Z
  • North Mavine is without a doubt the most beautiful, away from it all part of Shetland and this house is this was exactly what we were looking for in terms of location. Away from absolutely everything, a beautiful view and direct access to the hills and water but not too far away from Brae where we could pick up essentials easily. The only sounds to be heard were the wind, sheep and local birdlife. Staying in such an historic house was quite an experience and we found it a good base for exploring the islands - although remote the road network was excellent and everywhere was in easy reach.

    Richard2019-07-28T00:00:00Z
  • Very comfortable and well equipped. The most amazingly beautiful and peaceful setting. Wild life incredible.

    Mary2019-07-09T00:00:00Z
  • This is a most beautiful and restful place to stay. The view is spectacular and the peace and quiet is just perfect. There are lots of activities in the area and the host has made sure to have accurate and up to date information available for guests.

    Merle2019-06-30T00:00:00Z
  • Fantastic location and views. Otters and seals in loch below house. Handy for lots of walks. Get fresh crab meat locally.

    Giles2019-06-22T00:00:00Z
  • The location was breathtaking and central to some of the best hiking area in Shetland. The home was as it appeared online and we appreciated a dishwasher and vacuum cleaner! The hosts were quick to respond and kind. Thank you for two weeks in a glorious setting.

The Weaving Shed Studio is a small, very basic ground-floor apartment next to the glorious Weaving Shed Gallery, a private space which displays the work of the late Jeannette-Therese Obstoj. Jeannette loved Shetland and the restoration and refurbishment of the then-derelict Weaving Shed was carried out in her memory by the current owner, her partner Geoff. The studio apartment was designed as a simple retreat for creative writers and artists and is available to individuals and couples.
Situated by the sea on the Hillswick shore, the Weaving Shed Studio is next door to the local community shop, handy for the licensed hotel and bar and a wildlife sanctuary. Note: It's small, there is little natural light, and there is only one sofa bed. However, some of Europe's wildest, most unspoiled coastal scenery is on the doorstep. Otters, seals and whales are often seen. The weather is always entertaining, often extreme. Please note that the sleeping arrangements are one sofa-bed in the main studio space. Access to the adjoining Weaving Shed Gallery will be kept locked - there may be exhibitions there during the day and occasional, (quiet) evening events which should cause no disturbance.
Hillswick is the main settlement in Northmavine, the most spectacular of Shetland's mainland parishes. It is about 35 miles from the Shetland capital Lerwick. There is a well-stocked, licensed community shop, a medical centre, a hotel with excellent food and a bar, and many community events in the gallery and local hall.
  • Ideally located for walking and wildlife.

    Isobel2019-08-24T00:00:00Z
  • The studio is spacious, charming and contains everything you need. Communication with Tom is very easy. The location of the studio is fabulous! This Shetland area is beautiful and has everything you need in Hillswick. The store next door is very good, you can find everything (even gas!). The little harbor is very cute and the people who take care of the nearby marine hut are very friendly. In short, a beautiful place.

    Catherine2019-08-15T00:00:00Z
  • The Weaving Shed is a really special place, in a beautiful location. The shop that sells everything is just around the corner, the sea just across the car standing and the wildlife sanctuary next door. Shetland jewellery workshop a 2 minute walk up the road and the intriguing hotel behind. The art gallery itself has beautiful paintings, and wildlife photos when we were there. Everyone we met in Hillswick community was welcoming and friendly. The space was perfect for us and was warm and clean, good wifi but not so mobile reception, which again, was perfect :)

    Faith2019-07-26T00:00:00Z
  • We had a fantastic week at Hillswick. Amongst the highlights were spotting red throated divers, merlin, otters and orca. The coastline around Eshaness is dramatic and the Braewick cafe a welcome stop for weary cyclists. On that note, the Shetland motorists were very considerate towards cyclists, which was a pleasant surprise when you're from Edinburgh! A walk around the Ness of Hillswick gives an excellent view of the Drongs. We climbed Ronas Hill on a clear day and got lovely views. The accommodation was cosy and the shop next door very convenient.

    Sine2019-07-08T00:00:00Z
  • We had a fantastic stay here, the space had everything we needed, comfy bed, great kitchen and a powerful shower. Location is perfect too, right next to the shop , a wildlife sanctuary and a bay from which we were fortunate enough to see an otter catching it’s dinner. It’s also very handy for those using public transport as the bus drops you off 30 seconds walk away. Everyone we met was very friendly and the scenery in Northmavine is beautiful. I recommend a stay here to anybody.

  • Robert and Leslie were both great hosts! Every morning the food was accommodated to my varying daily schedule and was also absolutely delicious!!! My particular room was large, compared to most UK accommodations I've experienced, the water pressure was strong, the hot water lasted as long as needed, and overall the room was very stylish. Each day the room was cleaned and tea caddy freshened, and any questions I had were pleasantly answered. Robert and Leslie were both super pleasant and very guest oriented. If you are ever to stay in the Shetlands....Drumquin is definitely the place to stay!!!!!

  • Our stay at Nikita's place was excellent. Nikita and the co-hosts are easy to communicate with, be it in person or online. Directions to the property were clear, and check-in was smooth. The house is superbly clean, and spacious beyond what the pictures make out. A few miles from Brae, it makes a perfect base for exploring Shetland, whilst also offering the tranquil isolation that is so often the key to successful holidays in remote places. We were thrilled to see some of the local wildlife, including otters, rabbits and seals nearby. The large living room windows frame the local area beautifully, and many an hour was spent reading or listening to music whilst observing the changing light on the water and land beyond. For most of our group this was a first trip to Shetland, rest assured it won't be the last.

  • Beautiful house with stunning views. A great space with fantastic facilities, catering for everything. Sparkling clean with comfy beds and great kitchen facilities! We stayed with friends for New Year and it was a great space for making food and playing games. Great facilities for bairns too. Thank you to Nikita and family for the thoughtful food basket left in the kitchen with fresh eggs, chutney, bread and wine! It was such a thoughtful touch. Will definitely be back again, thank you!

The house is exactly as it says 'unique' and the stay was thoroughly enjoyed by all. The views were great and the little special touches went down a treat. Thank you for everything and we will definitely be booking again, would highly recommend A+++++

  • We just finished an absolutely wonderful stay at James's croft house. It met/exceeded all of our expectations. Beautiful setting, with stunning views! Completely renovated clean interior, fully equipped, comfortable, warm and cosy. We only used the first floor, upstairs were two more lovely bedrooms. Really comfortable bed. Store down the lane with supplies, alcohol and petrol, and easy drive to...the whole island! Communication with James was very quick and he answered all questions. I can't say enough about the croft house! If Shetland is your kind of place (we fell completely in love with it!) then you'll love James's place!

    Carol2018-09-23T00:00:00Z
  • A wonderful and cozy croft house in a remote location, perfect to spend a few quiet days or to use as a launching spot for exploring the northern part of the main island. An excellent kitchen setup too. Although we didn't have a chance to meet James, check-in was straight forward and painless. All-round worth a stop.

  • This is a really comfortable place to stay. Quiet and peaceful, lovely view, easy access to the north areas, and well equipped. Hillswick, Shetland Islands, United Kingdom

The perfect place for exploring the north of Shetland mainland and the outlying islands. This is a elegant retreat on two levels including a large kitchen/dining room, downstairs bathroom and upstairs bedrooms and living area. For families there are child locks, stair gates, cot and high chair available upon request. Part of the downstairs is locked off for work space and will be in use through the day. There are two entrances so your stay will remain private.
Come and stay where the Atlantic Ocean meets the North Sea. The View is close to the north of mainland Shetland and a great base for exploring the whole islands. The ferries to the northern isles are fifteen minutes drive away. The capital, Lerwick, is twenty five minutes drive away and the North Mainland is fifteen to thirty minutes drive away. The View is situated in the village of Brae, which has a swimming pool, playgrounds, a gym and exercise facilities, a doctors and dentist surgery, fuel station and multiple shops and a mini supermarket. There is good public transport and we are fifty minutes by car from the airport and twenty five minutes from the ferry terminal. There are excellent books and leaflets in the house, as well as a guidebook of our favourite places to eat and visit.
Brae is the busiest and largest village of the North Mainland of Shetland. It has a friendly welcoming community and is very safe. Visitors are welcome and local facilities are excellent. Locals take great delight in speaking about their beautiful islands to visitors. There are often community events on at the public halls and boating clubs so please look at the local paper for an up to date list of what’s on.
  • 'The View' is an amazing beautiful place to enjoy the vista of Brae and surrounding voes and hills, spotlessly clean, and very stylish, the hosts were so attentive and helpful, hands down the most luxurious and comfortable place to stay on the island, brilliant!!!

  • From start to finish our stay could not have been better. Quick, friendly and accommodating communication before arriving. Location was perfect for us to explore the northern isles and mainland whilst having facilities (well stocked supermarket and leisure centre) within walking distance. The local produce left for us was much appreciated - bought some Shetland butter to take home as a result. The accommodation is contemporary, spacious and luxurious. Facilities are great - an excellently equipped kitchen and ideal facilities to do easily do washing. And the house lives up to its name - I couldn’t tire of the view!

  • A great place to base yourself to explore Shetland or just to relax and get away from it all (don’t worry, WiFi is included!) A gorgeous & stylish house with breathtaking views over the bay. The house has everything you need - a real home from home. Rhoda has a wealth of information on places to visit and recommendations on where to eat as well as providing a simple check in process with a great manual for the house. A truly fabulous holiday experience!

Hi, we are Gordon and Jayne and we live on our small croft at the Sparl and Springbank Chalet is sited next to our home. It's a cosy, modern timber-clad 1.5 storey dwelling with underfloor heating. A spacious kitchen/dining space and 2 double bedrooms (with freesat TV) await you. The living room is upstairs and there's an excellent view over the surrounding water of Busta Voe. The bustling village of Brae is a short walk away and it has plenty of cafes & eating options should you choose them.
This purpose built accommodation is ideal as a base for exploring the north of the Shetland Isles. Your location 7 mils from the links to the Yell and Unst ferry, 12 miles from the cliff face of Eshaness, and 3 from the Red Sandstone of Muckle Roe. We live on a working croft, Blueshell mussels operate nearby and Brae is just a short walk away with it's Leisure Centre (pool/squash court/steam room) and various restaurants and bars.
Shetland is a wonderful place to spend a week exploring. There is plenty to do off the beaten track and on it. Be prepared for changeable weather and some breathtaking scenery. You can also follow up some of the locations used in the popular BBC crime drama 'Shetland'.

  • Lorraine’s spot was well appointed, sparkling clean , and so very accommodating to all of us ! Particularly for my sister who can not do stairs well and uses a walker . Her personal touches were so thoughtful with a spread of local fair that we got to sample ,fall in love with , and bought more on our way off the Island ! Lorraine was quick to respond and she is a superior Hostess ❤️

Would definitely recommend this Air Bnb and hope to come back again some time. Thank you. :-)

  • Outstanding hospitality does not begin to describe the kindness to be found on the Shetlands and Marina takes the cake. Valley Field was comforting beyond our expectations. The warmth of her dining room was difficult to leave behind for all that we had planned. Guests and neighbours have a good mingle there and Marina is the lovely cultivator of such a welcoming environment. At every opportunity she ensured we were well-fed and prepared us for our travels. She is well-connected, of course, and helped us find tickets to a lovely local music event (which was an absolute dream to attend). We will inevitably be returning to Brae and there is no place we would rather stay. In fact, the next visit may be permanent. What's the rule? Seven years on the Shetlands and we're eligible for the Up Helly Aa Jarl Squad? Thank you, Marina, and all the best until next time xx
