Ballymoon Castle is 3 km (2 mi) east of Bagenalstown, and is thought to date from the 13th century. Bagenalstown is located on the River Barrow. • Wow what an amazing space! Such a beautiful plot of land, with incredible views, we really couldn’t believe it. Host was fantastic, excellent communication and very hospitable. Apartment was sparkling clean and had everything you could ask for. We were especially delighted with what came in the fridge in particular the fresh eggs from Alan’s hens located on the land. Amazing! Overall a great stay, would highly recommend. :)

The breakfast items were a nice surprise, and greatly appreciated. Having a washer/dryer was a great bonus and super convenient. My daughter was thoroughly entertained with the toys, games and books. • My son and I had a wonderful stay. All the correspondences were responded promptly and the booking processed so smoothly. There was no issue checking in at all although we arrived very late (2am) after a wedding reception. The key was stored in a locked box with passcode informed beforehand. The two bedrooms my son and I stayed were both spotless with very clean ensuite with good electric shower and there was also a separate bathroom. The beds were extremely comfortable. What impressed me most was that the house was so warm and welcoming when we arrived after 2am. The decor is modern and stylish. The table was set with a plenty selection of cerials and bread when we woke up in the morning and welcomed by the host and had a lovely chat with her. It was such a pleasant stay. I highly recommend this place.

Cozy self-contained apartment in Borris Village. No taxi required, walk to Step House Hotel, Borris House, pubs & local attractions. First floor apartment located over a small, busy convenience store situated in the heart of scenic south Carlow.
The apartment has been recently renovated. The first bedroom has a king size bed. The second bedroom has two single beds. There is a good sized living room with cable TV. WiFi available. Fully functioning kitchen with all modern conveniences.
Borris commands panoramic views of the neighbouring countryside with Mount Leinster and the Blackstairs Mountains to the east, and the Barrow Valley to the west. It is the home to Borris House, the ancestral home of the MacMurrough Kavanaghs. The town has one of the oldest golf courses in Ireland as well as a 16-arch limestone viaduct (the 16 Bridges) built in 1860 and designed by William le Fanu.
  • Borris is a lovely little town. We were doing some walking along the river Barrow, and Fiona's apartment was ideal for this. The apartment has everything you could want or need, a cosy sitting room, practical kitchen and comfortable bedrooms. The water pressure in the bathroom is low, but manageable. Fiona left us bread, butter, milk, jam, tea and coffee which was very thoughtful. We really enjoyed our stay.

    Judy2020-03-07T00:00:00Z
  • Terrific apartment with a warm welcome from the Brophys. John and Fiona are very accommodating and helpful and make the stay in Borris extra special.

  • Very clean, Fiona was very accomodating and friendly

    Elizabeth2019-10-12T00:00:00Z
  • Fiona was an absolute wonderful host! The location was in a cute little town, right on Main Street, which was perfect for our 2 days exploring the local sites. She was always available when we had any questions. She met us upon check in and gave us many recommendations for local pubs and restaurants. It's a shame we didnt have more nights to spend here, as the apartment had everything you could need, including breakfast essentials (bread, coffee, milk, etc) The bedrooms and living room were spacious and comfortable. There was also plenty of onsite parking behind the building. I will definitely recommend Fiona and her apartment to anyone wanting a nice relaxing trip in a quiet little town.

    Laz2019-10-09T00:00:00Z
  • Lovely apartment all 6 of us enjoyed our stay very accommodating to us and handy being over a shop! Fiona lovey to deal with

  • Joan is so kind, generous, welcoming and full of great tips! We loved staying at her place and it was such a great location from Kilkenny. Lovely stay!

    Andrea2019-05-05T00:00:00Z
  • This is such a unique, quaint place to stay. The dairy house had everything we needed for our stay along with some nice touches by Joan, such as some homemade bread and scone with some Flowers in the table when we arrived. If you’re thinking of staying in Kilkenny, choose here instead of a hotel, it has everything you need and more such as being able to eat breakfast and dinner on the lawn, a stove if feeling chilly and just being somewhere unique and peaceful! Joan is a great host and very quick to respond. We will definitely stay again.

    Niamh2019-04-21T00:00:00Z
  • A very enjoyable stay with a very helpful but not intrusive host (and a fabulous dog - "Towser")

    Daniel2018-12-27T00:00:00Z
  • The apartment is very homely and cosy! Joan had the place lovely and warm for us when we arrived. It was really gorgeous! Thanks Joan! It is quite near the city but would you would need a car to get to and from there! We really enjoyed our stay! Great value for money!

    Ruth2018-11-25T00:00:00Z
  • Joan has been extremely helpful and welcoming. She came and picked us up the first day and when we arrived she had done considerate gestures like having fresh flowers on the table with a couple of cupcakes and in the fridge there were a bit of food for breakfast the next day. While we stayed at her place the shower suddenly broke one day, as soon as she came home she got it fixed right away. She also made sure to repair her two bicycles so we had them to get around. And this is just to mention a few things, so Joan has really been an amazing host! The studio apartment is also really nice, where it feels like your own small cozy apartment with its own fireplace.

    Vibeke2018-11-10T00:00:00Z
  • Joan went above and beyond to make us welcome and comfortable. Threat space, garden and the lovely dog Towzer♥️Full of character less than half the cost of the noisy hotels. U do need a car tho ... brilliant stay

  • We had a lovely weekend break at Majella and Michael's lovely lodge. The facilities are fantastic and more than you ask for. It is beyond great value for money. We loved the homely touch of having the fire lit on our arrival. They provide a great breakfast hamper which has everything you need to start the day. We loved having the fluffy dressing gowns for lazy evenings by the fire. The views from the property are lovely and it's so peaceful and quiet. Michael is very knowledgeable about the area and has some great tips and recommendations. The beds are lovely and comfortable and it's a place we will come back to again and again. We highly recommend a stay here to rest, relax and unwind.

  • Great location for a quiet holiday. River setting stunning with great walks. House has absolutely everything you could need. Fast WiFi. Close to several villages with more walks by Barrow river.

    Thomas2019-01-18T00:00:00Z
  • Josie and Fritz's home on the Kilkenny/Carlow border is a splendid location for a relaxing retreat in the country. Responses were quick and kind; the amenities comfortable and authentic. We spent two days and nights waking up to the babbling of the Barrow, mere metres away; walking on the banks of the river and sipping Guinness in the local bars only a 5 minute drive away in the picturesque Borris. At night we got to use the spotless kitchen to make ourselves steak dinners and nurse wine in their immensely cozy sitting room. Curled up by a roaring fire and watching movies on the large flatscreen. The bedroom was splendidly warm and comfortable with spare pillows should they be needed. The whole house was kept cozy with underfloor heating throughout. A house that is simultaneously retro, rural and modern, Josie and Fritz's place is an idyllic location for any form of retreat. A great place to clear the mind and heal the soul.

You are very welcome in my home, a small bungalow in the heart of Gowran village, located on the eastern side of County Kilkenny, Ireland. The mediæval town of Kilkenny is just a short drive away (16km). Carlow is a 20mins away and Dublin 1hour.
The space is occupied by myself and my dog. Please note, he's is a rescue dog and is nervous and insecure so if you are not a animal person this wouldn't be an ideal place for you. The house is about 100yo, work has been done on it, but it's not a ****hotel :) You will have private bedroom with a king size bed, all other space is shared.
Gowran Park race course and Golf Course is located one km from the house. In the centre of the village is the historic St. Mary's Collegiate Church which contains monuments from the 14th to 17th centuries. The beautiful town of Kilkenny is a 10mins drive from Gowran and offers plenty of things to do and see, lively nightlife and restaurant scene.

Kilgraney House is a late Georgian country house surrounded by extensive gardens and granite stone courtyards filled with culinary, aromatic and medicinal plants. The property offers guests a memorable country house experience in a tranquil rural setting on the Carlow Kilkenny border. Since 1994 we have been inspired by Kilgraney and captivated by that the surrounding countryside, towns and people have to offer. It's here that we grow, prepare, cook and present an encounter with our locality.
From the moment you walk through the weathered oak front door the womb-like hall, with honeyed woods, deep reds and ochre yellows, radiates welcoming and familiar tones. The interiors have a well-travelled and individual feel and have been decorated with some surprising touches. The house feels more like a home, which, essentially, is what it is, but with some of the comforts and facilities you expect from a small intimate hotel. Comfortable beds ensure you’ll have a restful sleep and awake refreshed for whatever your day may have in store. So relax, discover and come to love our home as much as we do.
Kilgraney is located in a quiet rural setting overlooking the Barrow valley in County Carlow. The house is equidistant from Bagenalstown and Borris village (6 km/ 3 miles). The Barrow River and the Blackstairs Mountains are nearby and offer many opportunities to encounter rural Ireland with unspoilt natural habitats and village life along quiet riverside walks and, for the more energetic, a good selection of forest and hill walks too. Carlow is a jewel of a county with a wealth of scenery and history – from rich pastureland and colourful mountains to the deep and historical Barrow River Valley. Everywhere in the landscape is the resonance of her ancient pre-Celtic past. A county of green, vibrant colours, whose welcoming people are much given to outdoor and sporting activities, such as gentle river cruising, golf or even hang gliding on Mount Leinster. Kilkenny is the Creative Heart of Ireland, where heritage and history, environmental harmony, crafts and architecture combine to create an all-pervading spirit of excellence. With Ireland's Medieval Capital at its heart, County Kilkenny offers the South East's finest countryside, a pretty, rich farmland dotted with medieval ruins, solid stone walls, charming villages and a host of historic monuments including Jerpoint Abbey, one of Ireland's finest monastic settlements. Regal, majestic and ancient, overlooking the brooding River Nore, Kilkenny Castle, now fully restored has stood sentinel at this important river crossing for perhaps 900 years. The Barrow Way follows the towpath, originally a path alongside the River Barrow to allow the pulling of barges or boats for transport. There are plenty of small, friendly villages where the welcome of the locals is renowned while the path also offers much of architectural interest to the visitor - bridges, many arched, and pretty lock houses, some still in use. Many interesting historical features are located in close proximity to the river including castles, abbeys, old bridges and derelict mills. Other Walks :The Slieve Margy Way Clogrennane Wood Looped Walk, Woodstock Gardens and Arboretum and Nore River Walk. Most popular local attraction is Kilkenny City. Here you’ll find Kilkenny Castle, a 12th century castle remodelled in Victorian times and set in extensive park lands which was the principal seat of the Butler Family, Marquesses and Dukes of Ormonde. The 19th century Picture Gallery is 45 metres long and contains many Butler portraits as well as some fine tapestries. Other Attractions :Altamount Gardens,Brownshill Dolmen, Duiske Abbey, Borris House, Jerpoint Abbey, Kells Priory and St Canices Cathedral. There are an impressive variety of golfing facilities within a short drive from Kilgraney House. Borris Golf Club, Mount Wolseley, Gowran Park Golf Club and Mount Juliet Golf Club. Other Pursuits Include: Eco Trails, Horse Riding, Fishing, Horse Racing and Canoeing.

We live in a beautiful part of South Carlow, 5kms from Borris, 24 Kms from Carlow and Kilkenny and within 1 hour's drive from Rosslare port. There are wonderful walks in the Blacktairs Mountains and along the River Barrow - a long distance walking route. We are also close to mountain biking trails, river activities and mountain walking. Borris our nearest town has a lovely hotel - The Step House Hotel - with an excellent chef and the hotel is a much sought after wedding venue as is Boris House . Each of our Shepherds Huts has a guide to all local activities, bars, restaurants and things to do.

We loved the homemade sourdough loaf fresh from the oven (struggled to not eat the lot it was so delicious!), the homemade jams (our favourite the loganberry) & our cosy hut insulated with wool from their flock of sheep. It’s an eco-centre that inspires in the environmental by being the change with such elegance & beauty.

  • We were down in Boris for a friend's wedding, and Alison's place was the perfect place to spend the night. Less than 5 minutes away from Boris house, it was clean, welcoming and best of all had a fridge stocked full of delicious breakfast goodies (absolutely essential after a big night!). Throughout Alison was friendly, helpful and super quick to respond to any and all questions - couldn't recommend staying here more!

Aras na hAbhann welcomes all to our self catering accommodation in a modern detached bungalow in an idyllic setting overlooking a weir on the River Barrow, 3km from Borris Co. Carlow. A rural retreat within easy access of Borris, Graiguenamanagh 7km, New Ross 25km and Kilkenny 30km. Dublin 1 hour 30 min drive. An ideal location for a relaxing break away, action packed adventure or a base to explore the Sunny Southeast. Enjoy walking, hiking, fishing, canoeing, cycling, swimming & more.
The spectacular view of the weir on the River Barrow is Aras na hAbhann's most striking feature. The river sets the tone here, whether it is flowing by gently or rushing past in a raging torrent. It will not go unnoticed. So hang around and enjoy it. A walk, a swim, hire a canoe or a bicycle? All available locally.
The quaint village of Borris is the location of Borris House, ancestral home of the family of the High King of Leinster, Step House Hotel and Restaurant, shops and pubs and hosts several boutique festivals throughout the year. For those who like walking Stage 5 of the Barrow Way and Stage 2 of the South Leinster Way pass in front of the house on the other side of the river. This section is a flat grassy path from Ballitiglea Bridge to Graiguenamanagh, with the River Barrow on one side and deciduous forests and farmland on the other. Walkers will encounter beautiful scenery, river locks, riverine wildlife and charming villages along the way. You will pass the most photographed lock at Clashganny and the neaby award winning Clashganny House Restaurant. Graiguenamanagh (two and a half hour walk along the tow path) has pubs, restaurants, cafes and Duiske Abbey. In St. Mullins (15 km or 4 hour walk) the historic ecclesiastical settlement on the Barrow Estuary is well worth a visit as is the Mullachan Restaurant.
  • Josie and Fritz's guest house was so lovely - super clean, spacious, stylish and comfortable. I had a private bedroom and bathroom (both perfect), and shared the kitchen and dining area with another guest. Very comfy and with lovely touches like fresh brown bread, butter and jam. The location is gorgeous - right on the river - and it is just five minutes' drive from lovely Borris village. I would absolutely recommend it and hope to visit again myself!

Our unusual shaped house is located in the remote rural area of Skeaghvasteen close to the medieval town of Graignamanagh (5 mins drive) , Borris (7mins) and Kilkenny city centre (within 30 mins ). You’ll love our tranquil place which has a great view of the Blackstairs mountains. Our place is good for couples and groups, solo adventurers and families.
The Rounded house offers a spacious guestroom with accompanying ensuite accommodates max 4 with 2 double beds. Unlike the standard spatial experience usually encountered our room appeal lies in their creative spaces. For instance the bedrooms are craddled by their inherent building curves which are punctuated with skyward light that accentuates the very nature of a relaxed and rewarding sleep.
The nearby Barrow river offers a great walk or jog connecting the local towns. Plenty of undisturbed fishing spots for the keen angler. Mount Leinster is a short drive away and is not too steep a climb.

  • This was my second stay at Laurence's Round House& I returned due to the wonderful hospitality, beautiful setting and spacious rooms. Laurence was very accommodating and allowed us to make ourselves at home, having coffee on the back patio with stunning views of the mountains. The breakfast provided is fresh and varied. The room is clean, modern and very spacious- there was plenty of space with 3 adults in the one room. The house is only a short drive from Borris and it is close to the River Barrow, so it is an ideal spot for cycling, walking or any kind of rural holiday! I would highly recommend this place. It was my second visit and no doubt I'll be back again!

The Apple House is a beautifully unique and tranquil setting on the grounds of one of Ireland's most famous historic estates, Borris House. The small and cosy building has been newly renovated and offers spectacular views of the Blackstairs Mountains and surrounding countryside. Please note: The Apple House is currently home to a friendly beehive, which you can safely observe from upstairs. Although the hive is not internal, we would advise that anyone with an allergy keeps this in mind.
The Apple House is within walking distance of Borris Village and The Step House Hotel
  • Rose cottage is spacious and welcoming. It is an old cottage, nestled in the farm buildings of Borris House so expect an old kitchen, but the lovely surprise is the super comfortable beds and the lovely shower in the main bedroom en suite. The electric heaters warm the rooms in no time (in fact we had to turn all the heating off after a while!) and the fire in the living room is great. Morgan left us loads of logs. Wandering around the house and enjoying the breathtaking views is a great bonus, as well as spotting pheasant and all the native song birds as you go. Really close to Borris village and most importantly only a couple of minutes to O'Shea's pub where you can have a couple of nice pints. Very good local shop, stocked really well with all you could need. Highly recommend.

  • Staying at the Apple House was a great experience, the quirkiness of the building itself which has been very tastefully done up and the use of the grounds were very special. Morgan and his family made us feel very welcome and we couldn't recommend this place enough.

    Andrew2019-08-22T00:00:00Z
  • Expectations exceeded! The Apple House, called "Rapunzel Tower" by the children, was simply magical. The rooms have been lovingly renovated and are much more spacious than we had been imagined. Morgan and Sara have managed to preserve the traditional flair, including wild bees, and to convince with modern solutions like the bathrooms and tiny kitchen. Morgan is a wonderful host, uncomplicated, friendly and interested, who likes to share tips and stories, if you ask him to. The Apple House will forever hold a special place in our Ireland memory. Thank you verry much Sara and Morgan!

    Susanne2019-08-09T00:00:00Z
  • The Apple House on the grounds of Borris House is a very unique and charming little place for up to four people. It has two seperate ensuite bedrooms and a small, well thought out kitchenette and sitting room. There is also outdoor seating and a bbq provided, and we spent a lovely evening outside, enjoying the stunning flair and atmosphere. Every window has a stunning view and invites you to just sit there and enjoy the view. The bee hive was another quite unique feature, which just added to the charm of this tower. Morgan and Sara were really helpfull and I can highly recommend the house as well as the hosts. We'll definitely come back.

We hope to go there again for our next trip to Ireland!

  • What an absolute joy to have the opportunity to return to Borris House. First time an unforgettable experience in the Apple House with a friend. This time with elderly parents and my sisters the Rose Cottage a beautiful experience. Open log fire. Spacious and warm well equipped country kitchen. Beautifully comfortable bed and bathrooms. Wonderfully warm welcoming hosts . . attentive but never intrusive. The Borris House guided Tour with its wonderfully colourful history I would highly recommend. I went back a second time. Surrounded by cows sheep horses and this time round free roaming and beautiful pheasants in an unimaginably beautiful landscape. . woods, lawns, gardens, rivers mountains. . . and on and on. . . A soul and heart nourishing experience.

  • We had a lovely stay at the Rose Cottage. Very comfortable beds, lovely bed linen and towels. Great to be able to light a fire on a chilly night, wood, turf, firelighters all supplied. Beautiful grounds to walk in, we went on a 2 hour trek around the whole estate. So peaceful!! Some outdoor furniture at the back of the cottages would be prefect for a summers day. Thanks again Morgan and Sara.

  • Borris House is a beautiful place to visit and it is particularly special to stay on the grounds of the house itself. Rose Cottage had everything we needed and was very comfortable. We thoroughly enjoyed our trip and we hope to return for another visit, at some point, all going well.

  • Rose cottage is a very nice 3 bed cottage. Beds are comfortable and house was very clean with pristine bed linen and towels. It has great access to the Step Inn Hotel and Borris centre, where we attended a wedding. Morgan and Sara were lovely to deal with and promptly answered our queries.

  • Close to all amenities and the grounds are beautiful. Cottage is very clean and comfortable, it is not really suitable for people who have difficulties with walking and climbing stairs as the toilets are upstairs. But other than that it’s a very lovely place to stay

  • Deidre's place was lovely to stay at. Her home is very cozy and inviting, and she is very friendly. Her house was very clean and you could tell she enjoys hosting. Had plenty of free and easy parking right next to her home, and was also able to do some laundry there. I felt right at home at her home.
