Places to stay in Goongerah

Places to stay in Goongerah
Rustic outside but 5 star simple luxury inside. Fully-self contained, compact and comfy. Solar hot water & power for the perfect eco-friendly holiday. Situated between two National Parks. The Tin Chalet is in the middle of the 'farmyard' of an organic property, next to the garden and orchard, with goats, chooks and Clydesdales across the fence and the beautiful Brodribb River a hop and a skip away. Organic produce, milk and eggs in season (prefer guests provide own linen).
Recently built (still finishing small details like trim but is fully functional). In winter this is warm, having double glazed windows and being well insulated all round. The wood stove cooks meals and keeps the place cosy. The upstairs bedroom has a double bed. Bathroom and laundry are off the verandah, with an inside/outside pan toilet at the end (certain considerations are needed). The kitchen has a wood stove plus a double burner gas stove for cooking, a small 40 litre fridge and a cool room. There is a small study nook as well as a 2 seater lounge to flop on.
Goongerah is a small isolated valley, 70km north of Orbost and the one road through the settlement heads into NSW, Canberra or the snow fields. It is surrounded by forests and wildlife. The community of about 40 people has one school, a phone box, a CFA shed and a hall. Most people are interested in growing their own food, using renewable energy and have a fairly progressive and environmental outlook. The nearest shops are a long drive so please come with all your needs, and even a spare jerry of fuel if you intend to visit the parks.
  • Jill's place is a very comfortable and welcoming spot in a beautiful part of Victoria and I'd highly recommend it to anyone. The Tin Shack is really well thought-out and has all the amenities that you'd need to go off-grid for a few days. The local environment was affected by the recent fires, but there is still lots of lovely bushland to visit alobh with amazing old growth forests. Go visit....you won't be disappointed!

  • A very special place. The cottage itself is hand crafted from recycled timbers and other materials. It’s small and very comfortable, with beautiful spaces to sit and read, listen to the birds or watch the passing parade of Jill’s ducks, geese, goats, chooks and draught horses. It’s set in a beautiful lush valley between two national parks with wonderful forest walks and drives. Jill is a relaxed and knowledgeable host, who gives her guests plenty of space to relax and soak up the beautiful natural surroundings.

  • This place is a gem hidden in the valley. Walking distance to the campground and Ellery Creek trek (11km), there’s plenty to do if you need a rest day from driving. We spent tons of time on the actual property itself, walking around and reading and taking it all in. Jill is a magnificent host and woman, and we enjoyed every second of the way of life she’s built here. Highly recommended and not just for a one night stopover.

  • Perfect place for nature lovers, the setting is sumptuous, surrounded by animals and greenery. The cottage is rustic and comfortable, ideal for a relaxing stay. Thanks Jill!

  • Jill’s place is a must see if visiting the area. It would also make an interesting place to stay for a few nights driving or riding the long way to Melbourne. It is amazing to see the high amount of sustainability practices and repurposing that Jill has put into the Tin Chalet and her river-from property. There are some great back roads and trails to explore in the area. I hope we can visit again. Jill is very knowledgeable of the local area.

  • My partner and I thoroughly enjoyed our time at the Tin Chalet. Jill was very kind and easy to communicate with. It was wonderful getting to meet all of her animals - chooks, horses, goats, alpaca, guineafowl, guinea pigs, geese, and her dog Maisie. In addition to letting us pick some fruits & veggies from her garden, Jill even gave us some venison to try. The cabin itself was charming, well-ventilated, and had everything that we needed (flashlight, maps, cooking essentials, tea, etc). We left Witchwood feeling so well-rested and inspired and already cannot wait to go back. Thank you Jill for sharing your little slice of heaven with us!

  • Jill's farm is marvellous and it was such a joy to be able to stay for a couple of nights. We wish we'd had longer! Jill is a warm and welcoming host who is happy to have a chat and share local insights or to leave you to enjoy the revitalising peace and tranquility of this beautiful part of Victoria.

  • Many thanks for a wonderful stay at Whelans Run Farm House. I have been travelling though airbnb a lot and this Farm house have truly topped all the other places I visited so far. 360 degree view and a great placse for a get away from the busy lifestyles that we all have on a day to day basis. Host Mr. Trent came every morning to see whether we are comfortable with the stay and provided us with the best hospitality we could ask for. Only thing that can’t help is since this is located inside a massive land there wasn’t any connection except for bit of Telstra, but that made our stay even better to enjoy with the group we had. Thanks for making us feel like at home and providing with the best. Hoping to visit this lovely place again in the future.
