Places to stay in Franklin
Welcome to our cozy mountaintop cabin in the woods with great views. Easy access. One hour from Harrisonburg, VA and 10 minutes from Franklin, WV.
Unplug and come enjoy the peace, beauty, and recreational opportunities Pendleton County, West Virginia's mountain playground, has to offer. Our cozy cabin blends into the mountain setting and was built between 2010 and 2014, using as many local and reclaimed materials as possible. It has one bedroom plus a loft. There is a ladder to the loft space which has a single bed and a small sitting area. (We do provide a way to block access to the ladder if you want to keep little ones from going up.) Sleeping space is also available in the living room (window seat ). The bathroom has a clawfoot tub/shower. Kitchen is fully set up for cooking with full size stove, refrigerator, a pantry, and plenty of storage space. We do not have wifi or cable. (Wifi is available at Subway in Franklin.) We do have plenty of books and games and a collection of videos. There is a window air conditioner in the main living area and in the bedroom. Cell service is spotty. AT&T users can almost always get a signal up on the ridge behind the cabin, and also can get service in Franklin, and often in the cabin. Verizon users will not get reception in Franklin area or in the cabin. This space is about 550 sq. ft. excluding the loft. There is a wood stove in the cabin that is available for use from October through April and firewood is provided. We also have convenient electric baseboard heat. Please show correct number of guests. I have had to increase the cleaning fee due to enhanced cleaning procedures due to Covid-19. If you are interested in staying for a week please contact me. It is quite possible we can work that out even though it appears the cabin is unavailable during the week. Absolutely no pets.
This is a beautiful area with well-kept farms, beautiful forests, and mountain streams and springs. Franklin is a charming small town and it is like stepping back in time. There is a grocery store, a couple of small restaurants, and two hardware stores. The Drive-In theater is open on weekends during the warmer months. Franklin has a community pool that has very reasonable rates. Hiking, biking, fishing opportunities abound locally. Dolly Sods, Spruce Knob, Seneca Rocks are about an hour away. Monterey, Virginia is 30 minutes away and is a scenic little town. Harrisonburg, VA is an hour away. Franklin, Monterey, and Harrisonburg have nice farmers markets. Pendleton County, WV has a website that may provide more information about local attractions.
  • This was the perfect place to disconnect from the world and focus on relaxing! My husband and I loved staying at the cabin and sort of live off the grid for a weekend. The cabin was super cozy, and the wood stove worked amazing to keep it warm! We’d definitely like to stay here again!

  • The Bear Cub Cabin is a peaceful and relaxing getaway for those looking to unplug from the daily grind. Perfect for shutting in on a long weekend, but within a twenty minute drive to scenic Franklin, WV. Donna and Don have thought of the essentials for a wonderful stay. From just waking up to a beautiful sunrise, an early morning walk to the top of Sharpe Ridge and a lovely scenic drive to Spruce Knob, we saw it all. Thank you for sharing your cabin. We loved it! Casey & Michael

  • The cabin was a wonderful place for a weekend getaway and would be great for an even longer stay too! Beautifully furnished and immaculately clean. The reading nook and wood burning stove were our favorite parts!! No cell service but that’s the whole point of a cabin in the woods! Will definitely stay there again!!

  • Picture perfect place! The photos are exactly what you get and it's just perfect. I would suggest you plan to have meals at the cabin, there just is not many options, especially for dinner. All in all it a great getaway, we loved every minute of the trip and our stay.

This cute one-room cabin tucked in the trees is perfect for two people. The idea behind this cabin is to offer an economical glamping experience. You will be comfortably immersed in nature with wildlife all around, but you won't have to sleep in a leaky tent on the hard ground and freeze!! We are the closest rental to Spruce Knob, a local attraction with great hiking and views. Other nearby attractions include Seneca Caverns, Seneca Rocks, Nelson Rocks, and Dolly Sods.
Get lost from the distractions of technology and the stress of life and spend quality time with your loved ones-- without draining your bank account! --This is a one-room cabin. TAKE NOTE: we are remodeling! When we open this spring, the cabin will be equipped with a regular queen bed instead of the sofa bed! -The kitchenette has basic cooking and eating utensils and linens, as well as a small frig (like a motel would have), microwave, single-burner hot-plate, and coffee pot. -- The bathroom has fresh bath linens and a hot shower. --Still wishing for a taste of camping though? We provide you with that too! Outside, you can grill and have a picnic with the fire pit, picnic table, and park-style charcoal grill available.
Our other two cabins and lots of woods are all that is close! Hiking and scenery in abundance!
  • We loved this cozy cabin. We spent the weekend here for our "honeymoon" and the hosts were great. They were quick to reply and always willing to help. They were also very understanding when we had to leave early. The cabin looks exactly like it is presented and spotless. We arrived a bit later in the evening and the lights and heaters were on for our arrival. It was definitely the small things that made this trip so great! We will definitely stay again in the future!

  • The cabin was in pristine condition when we arrived, and Kent, Cynthia and Marissa had the light on for us, which was lovely considering we got in so late. Great location and view. We made sure to bring all of our food, which i would recommend to others as well. We hope to come back!

    Katherine2019-11-03T00:00:00Z
  • The cabin is a gem. The view from every window was beautiful. The place is so clean and decorated perfectly. If you need a getaway from the city it is perfect.

  • Great little cabin off the road. Enjoyed quiet evenings on the deck. Had all the essentials we needed to go off the grid for a couple days. Really appreciated the coffee and fireplace when it cooled off in the evenings. Super clean and overall a wonderful stay!!

    Rebekah2019-10-13T00:00:00Z
  • The little cabin in the woods is perfect to get away from the hustle and bustle of life. No cell. No WiFi. Franklin, Seneca Rocks, & top of Spruce Knob all had WiFi or cell service. The location of the cabin is perfect for getting out and exploring the hills of West Virginia. Coming back to water and electricity allows you to enjoy nature while still having some creature comforts we’ve all become so used to. Would definitely stay here again to explore more of the area.

    Eric2019-09-10T00:00:00Z

  • I had a great stay for 2 nights at Kim's cabin. The location is easy to find and close to all the local attractions; my friends and I had a wonderful experience visiting Seneca Rocks, Blackwater Falls and some other spots nearby. The cabin is cozy, clean and can easily house 4 people. A five-star stay! Thanks Kim!

Located on a quiet country road, this renovated barn is close to Seneca Rocks, Spruce Knob, the Dolly Sods, etc. Share the area with goats, chickens, and a peacock! The barn has its own bathroom with hot water, a small cooking area (including dishes/cookware), AC/Heater, 1 Queen bed, TV with Netflix, and WiFi. Linens & towels included. Expect to be woken by the rooster! *Please advise if you will have pets ($10 fee per pet per night, pay on arrival) *Please Read Below for COVID19 Update*
**COVID-19 Update- I am accepting guests at this time. West Virginia is slowing starting to open back up for business, and most places have reopened by now. Please be considerate when dining out and shopping in stores, by wearing a mask, washing your hands regularly and practicing social distancing. As for cleaning the barn, I have been taking extra measures to wipe down all "high touch" areas with disinfectant, all blankets and linens get washed between each stay, and the barn is given a more thorough than normal clean after each stay. Because the cleaning process is much more involved now, I have increased to a 2 night minimum stay on weekends, and allow a full 24 hours between each booking for cleaning/airing out (for bookings in May there is still a 48 hour gap between bookings). Detailed Listing Description: This quaint barn was renovated in 2013, and is located in my yard, a short distance from the main house. It has its own private bathroom and a small kitchen area for basic cooking. There is a small refrigerator, hot plate, toaster oven, kettle and coffee maker. All pots, pans, dishes, etc also included. There is not a proper oven for baking. The water is not only drinkable, but probably better tasting than most bottled water (the well is spring-fed!) Located just 5 minutes from Seneca Rocks, WV on a quiet country road, it's the perfect location for an escape from the real world. If you're looking to get in touch with nature, and love animals, you will love staying in the barn! There is no cell phone service in the area, but free Wifi reaches the barn. There is also a TV with DVD player/Netflix, but no cable TV. There is a queen bed and AC in the room. There is also a propane wall heater for colder months. Sheets, blankets, towels, etc are provided. Please note, this is a true barn. Just two doors down live 2 pygmy goats, chickens, ducks, and a peacock. The birds do roam freely around the yard. There are also 2 cats that live next door, and the peacock often enjoys roosting on the roof, and sometimes starts calling early in the morning. Mating season for the peacock is usually around late June to early July. During this time he can be annoyingly loud, even in the middle of the night. You may also hear some other animal noises in the night... (The cats do not go into the area where you will stay. There is no cat odor and people with cat allergies should not have a problem.) The barn is situated close to the house, where I live with my husband and our 3 dogs. I am usually around, but not always. There is a charcoal grill and a fire pit in the yard, which you are welcome to use as well. However, you will not have access to the main house. For a unique experience come stay in the Seneca Rocks Renovated Barn! **There is no cell phone reception in or around Seneca Rocks.
Seneca Rocks is quite literally in the middle of nowhere. It is a very small town nestled in the mountains of West Virginia. There are many points of interest in the area, but to see these places please expect to do some mountain driving while you are here. In the town of Seneca Rocks, which is about 4 miles from the house there are 2 stores with souvenirs and limited grocery items. There is a newly opened Subway restaurant, plus a couple local places to eat, but the choices are pretty limited. There are the rocks, with a hiking trail to the top. There is also a swimming hole in the river at the base of the rocks. The following places are popular among visitors, including driving times from the barn: Dolly Sods (45 minutes) (great hiking) Spruce Knob (40 minutes) (highest point in WV, great hiking) Blackwater Falls (45 minutes) (hiking, point of interest) Seneca Caverns (15 minutes) Smoke Hole Caverns (15 minutes) Davis/Thomas (45 minutes) (the nearest bars/nightlife, and best restaurants are here) Canaan Valley (25 minutes) (hiking, mountain biking)
  • Shelly's barn cottage is situated in a quiet, enchanting place along a creek. It is a very peaceful site, providing a perfect situation to get back in touch with nature and its magic. The cozy cottage lets in a soft, diffused light by which you can enjoy a relaxing afternoon or morning coffee with your loved one. You can hear the rushing water and lively chirping of the farm animals, who are all very friendly and interesting to observe. Shelly's place is in an ideal location, close to climbing access routes and trails. Neighboring towns, which are a bit farther away, are filled with music and art. We really loved staying at Shelly's place and highly recommend it.

    Melissa2020-05-03T00:00:00Z
  • The place was just as advertised, and allowed me to relax which is just what I needed during this time. I can honestly say I have never stayed in a barn before, too cool! The waterfall and animals were very therapeutic, I would definitely recommend. Be prepared to disconnect, such a great escape from the city. Shelly's place is close to surrounding sights and sites with great hiking nearby.

  • Had a great stay, the surroundings are beautiful, the barn is cozy and clean and has everything you need. Would definitely come back!

  • We had a lovely experience staying at Shelly's place. Her place was exactly as pictured and made for a lovely weekend. I loved being surrounded by nature and the outdoor space was awesome! Would definitely recommend staying here if you want close access to Seneca Rocks and other adventures in the area.

  • My girlfriend and I truly loved our stay. The animals were very friendly and fun to be around and the barn had everything you could need. We hiked Seneca Rocks Trail, Dolly Sods, Redman trail, and Blackwater Falls. All had amazing views and the barn was the perfect place to come back to and relax. Shelly is a great host. We wish we could have stayed for longer and we will definitely be back!

My place is good for couples, solo adventurers, business travelers, families (with kids), and furry friends (pets). It is located just above the entrance to the Smoke Hole Canyon with great fishing, beautiful scenery along the paved country curvy road. You can drive through the canyon and come out on Rt 28 just below the Smoke Hole caverns and gift shop. Then continue to Seneca Rocks and hike the rocks or drive to Nelson Rocks and do some rock climbing or zip-lining. Spruce Knob has hiking
Our cabin sits along RT 220 also known now as Petersburg Pike 2/10th a mile from the entrance to the Smoke Hole canyon where you amy hike, fish and travel through the canyon and enjoy the beauty of the South Branch River, Eagle Rock, May fish in the catch and release area for fun only. If you want to keep your fish be sure not to fish in the designated area. The Reeds Creek Rd is another road just 1/2 mile that is a great road to walk with dog or just hike yourself, this road 5 mile in is where the Reeds Creek fish hatchery is located, nice to visit while in the area. At the cabin we do have a fire pit weather permitting to enjoy while talking and star gazing with friend and family.
Our area here in Upper Tract is very quite and there are houses you may see but yet far away that they will never hear you talking or actually see you. Just 3 minutes from the cabin is the new business called Swilled Dog which offers flavored hard ciders and also some weekends has entertainment. Sure want to stop by being it is so close to the cabin.
  • This overlook cabin was exactly what we needed for a quick weekend getaway in the midst of the COVID-19 restrictions. Rhonda was extremely communicative throughout the booking process and regularly checked in to ensure we had everything we needed during our stay. The bear theme is picturesque and fun to try and count all the bears inside and outside! The shower was hot and had great pressure, which was perfect after a day hike to Seneca Rocks. Great location within an hour or so to several trailheads still publicly available, but we are looking forward to perhaps returning to check out Seneca Caverns when it opens back up! Internet was reliable and we were fortunate to have good signal reception (only if you are AT&T or T-Mobile customer). We didn’t realize how close the cabin was to the main road, but we still had ample privacy and enjoyed the quiet throughout our stay. Since restaurants are not as readily available due to the COVID-19 restrictions, we recommend doing your own grocery shopping and bring your own chef’s knives since the nearest major grocery store is about an hour drive away. Thank you Rhona for the memorable experience!

    Bella2020-05-03T00:00:00Z
  • Such a beautiful location, adorable cabin that was extremely clean and well kept. It felt like I was walking into a home and not just an air bnb. Highly recommend

    Amy2020-03-10T00:00:00Z
  • Such a great location, beautiful cabin and rhona and hap were very accommodating. We will definitely be back!

    Tyler2020-03-09T00:00:00Z
  • These are two of the best hosts I've had. They were very communicative and were incredibly sweet. The cabin itself is perfect for a quaint, little getaway in the mountains. We spent the entirety of the next day fishing and my puppy loved to play in the water as well; not to mention it was only a 10 minute drive from the cabin. My friends and I got to catch up and enjoy a mini vacation from our everyday lives. We enjoyed every second. Thanks so much!

  • Rhona and Carroll’s cabin is a great place to stay! My husband and I spent a lovely night there. We want to make a return trip when the weather is warmer so we can enjoy the porch and the fire pit. I highly recommend staying here!

    Julia2020-01-01T00:00:00Z
  • I can’t say enough wonderful things about the cabin and it’s wonderful owners! The cabin itself had everything we could have wanted and was beyond cozy. It was our first trip to WV and waking up to the view was something we loved. The amenities were very thoughtful and the helpful tips from Rhona and Carroll were invaluable while navigating the nearby hotspots. Staying in their cabin was definitely one of the highlights of our vacation and we would definitely love to go stay again!

    Jennifer2019-12-31T00:00:00Z
  • This was our third stay at the cabin, and we love it more every time. It has all the amenities you could think of, and feels like our second home. We can't wait to return soon.

  • Stayed while working in town. Great hosts and location! Would highly recommend it to anyone. Will probably come back for a non work trip.

    John2020-03-28T00:00:00Z
  • We have stayed here twice now and will definitely stay again when visiting family in WVA. The house is always clean, feels "homey" and has great views of the mountains. Darell & Cindy are flexible, accommodating and easy to get hold of... We highly recommend this house!

    Kimberly2020-03-22T00:00:00Z
  • We have stayed at Black Horse Farm repeatedly over the last several years--usually for the Highland County Maple Festival. It is ideally located for visiting the area and Darell and Cindy are two of the most gracious hosts one could hope for. They are very accomodating with allowing us to get into the home whatever time we arrive and the home is always immaculate and well-stocked with all necessary items (or at least all things we needed--pots, pans, dish soap, towels, other kitchen items, firewood for the outdoor fire ring, etc.). Also, there are generally nice touches left to greet us, such as homemade bread, local syrup, or fruit. The location is very relaxing. The farmhouse is a true farmhouse, sitting by itself in a fenced yard but surrounded by active fields--filled with corn and, often cows. There are few things more enjoyable, at least to us, than sitting on the wrap-around porch reading or just enjoying the view of the hills surrounding the valley. We know we'll return often.

    William2020-03-15T00:00:00Z
  • This is a quiet, rustic farmhouse that really feels like a travel back in time, while still being able to enjoy the comforts of the 21st century.

Stream-side guest house with fantastic water view in lovely forest setting and steps away from trailhead to GW National Forest. Peaceful and private, this large 720 sq ft loft studio is a charming, comfy getaway. During the day go hiking or just relax on the deck overlooking the stream. At night open the windows and let soothing nature sounds lull you to sleep. Just 11 miles from Harrisonburg. Internet, Netflix. A meditative retreat and home base from which to explore the area.
CORONA VIRUS NOTE: Our loft is in a secluded natural location where one can, if desired, have little to no human contact. Our location greatly reduces the potential risk of community contagion of the Corona virus and enables one to easily practice social distancing. In an extra effort to provide the maximum protection to our guests, we ask that you bring your own set of queen-size bedsheets, blanket and your own towels. Not having to do laundry will give our housekeeper extra time to wipe down and sterilize all surfaces and to exercise every precaution to prevent exposure to the Corona virus. We appreciate your understanding of our efforts to protect you and our guests by providing a sanitized, sterile and safe living space. This secluded, second story loft/guesthouse (garage below) is accessed by a flight of stairs leading to a small deck overlooking the forest and beautiful stream. In the warm weather you can open the windows and hear the water rushing over the boulders. At the base of the stairs is another deck with a gas grill and a stair down to the lower property and the stream. The location is quite secluded and there is no traffic noise from rt. 33 which is almost a mile away. The loft is equipped with 2 burner hotplate, countertop oven, sink, microwave, fridge, coffee maker, and necessaries for making and serving basic meals. Breakfast staples (eggs, bread, cereal, coffee, fruit, etc) included. High speed internet connected. Network channels, Netflix and Amazon on smart TV. Bathroom with stall shower. Smoke-free both inside the loft and on the grounds. Sorry, no pets of any kind. The space is set up to sleep two. Check-in time is 2:00pm and Check-out time is 12:00 noon. IMPORTANT NOTE: Be sure to print driving and parking directions as some navigation systems have the last bit of our road mapped incorrectly! In the 1800's there was a destination resort hotel in Rawley Springs that was renowned for the "healing waters" emerging from the many springs in the area. At the foot of the Allegheny range, and located on the very border of hundreds of thousands of acres of GW National Forest, the loft feels a world away from the hustle and bustle. The grounds are planted with azaleas, rhododendrons and day lilies that are spectacular in the spring. Summer is five to ten degrees cooler than Harrisonburg due to the higher elevation, the tree canopy and stream. Great for hiking. Fall foliage is magnificent and is a week ahead of lower elevations in the Shenandoah Valley. Winter is a magical time when the trees are snow covered and the air crisp and clear. Just past the property is the trailhead for the National forest, so the loft is surrounded by forest and park land. From the trailhead one could walk for 20 miles into West Virginia and not see another structure (you may have to get your feet wet crossing if the stream is up - bring your hiking boots).
ENJOYING RAWLEY SPRINGS The property: Feel free to wander around the property or hang out in the garden and have a picnic on the grass. In the spring everything is blooming and green, and in the fall all the ground plants are turning brown as the leaves come into full color. The Stream: The stream flows directly out of George Washington National forest. To access the stream there is a stairway leading from the deck just behind the loft to the water. The stream might be a trickling brook if it’s been dry, or a raging river if there has been a big storm. Most often it is somewhere in between, but be careful – the rocks are always slippery. It’s fun to hang out on the big flat rocks in the middle of the stream directly across from the deck of the loft and have a picnic. If the steam is high enough you may wish to wade or lounge in the pools by the large rocks across from the loft. If you are a fly-fisher, the stream is home to native brook trout. The path that runs along the stream climbs back up the bank and forms an elliptical walking circuit back along the flat section – great for a walking meditation circuit. There are chairs and a bench scattered about for those who just wish to relax in the healing embrace of nature. Hiking in GW National Forest: If you face the gravel road and go right, you will quickly come to the end of the road and the beginning of GW National forest. Go straight past the end of the cul-de-sac and you are at the trail head. There is a beautiful little wading pool just steps down from the road, and miles and miles of trails begin just across from the stream. If the stream is up, you might have to get your feet wet if the stepping stones across are covered with water. There are three stream crossings on this trail within the first quarter mile or so, after which it follows the right bank for miles as you gain elevation. (At the second stream crossing you can follow the right bank over the bluff to avoid the second and third stream crossings). Just over the first stream crossing and to the left is a beautiful little picnic spot on the rocks across from a steep rock wall. A really great hang-out spot. (If the stream is too high, or you don’t want to get your feet wet, see the description for “Juliette’s Tower” to access the more difficult but equally beautiful trail that is on the opposite bank of the stream, and which requires some climbing, but no stream crossings). The trail into the forest is occasionally marked on the trees by two yellow squares or diamonds, and pretty much follows the stream. You can’t get lost if you remember that the stream flows towards home – it will bring you back to the cul-de-sac. The trail presents some really lovely and intimate views. After the third stream crossing the trail is a bit rocky for a hundred yards or so, then evens out. After this rocky bit, the path diverges from the stream for a stretch - look for a small cairn of stones and one oblong stone on the left side of the trail pointing toward the stream. The oblong stone points to a large, flat boulder just above a lovely pool into which rush a few small rapids. Gorgeous, secluded and peaceful. Sit on the boulder over the pool and become a fully realized being. Further on the trail is a beautiful long view of the stream, and also a section with a beautiful tall rock face on the other side. It’s easy to lose your sense of time as you delight in all this beauty: Remember to be back before dark! Of course, animals live in this huge forest, including black bears, and it’s conceivable, though very rare, that you might see one– as well as other forest creatures. They want to avoid you and it’s very unlikely that you will end up in the belly of a wild animal - we have never heard of anyone being attacked by a bear around here. More Hiking - Juliet’s Tower and the Left Bank: Also at the end of the cul-de-sac, to your left, will be a path that goes up the side of the very steep hill (use the tree roots as steps). Climb past the first large granite boulders and outcroppings, and about 200’ above the road you can hunt around to find the path that runs to your right. This path leads to a long, tall, granite wall (not just a bunch of boulders) and on to “Juliet’s Tower” (see photo). The wall is, perhaps, 100 feet long and 20 feet high and the path runs along its base, so if you don’t know if you’ve found it, you haven’t. There are great hang-out/picnic spots up here. You have to be a good rock climber to get up on the tower itself, which is a granite outcropping/spire about 20’ high, but the path along the rock wall is pretty cool too with a nice view. Well worth the effort. The Left Bank: If you are following this path because the stream is too high to cross and want to hike in the mountains along the left bank of the stream, continue on the narrow footpath past Juliette’s tower and down the side of the hill. This path is seldom traveled and a bit overgrown, but manageable. At the base of the hill you will cross over a little tributary brook (about 4 feet wide) and continue on the path as it opens up and becomes wider. In a few hundred yards you will come to a campfire pit and the path leads to a stream crossing. However, look to the left from the firepit and you will see a path that follows the left bank of the stream. Follow the left bank trail, picking your way through a pathless area of boulders (across from which is the meditation rock and pool mentioned in the “yellow rectangles” trail on the other side of the stream) until you come to a new stream/tributary that comes in from the left (and is about 20’ across). Follow the left bank of that stream until you come to another firepit, across from which is a really magical spot with small waterfalls and rapids with a little island in the middle. This is the best spot on this stream. A perfect place to have lunch and lounge by, or in, in the water. Further along this trail dead-ends on the left side and requires a stream crossing to continue on the right bank, where it gets rougher. Lower Rawley: If you prefer strolling to hiking take a walk through the pleasant village of Lower Rawley, population 20, more or less. If you face the gravel road and turn left you will walk out the way you drove in. It’s a nice walk into the little neighborhood of “Lower Rawley” (see drawing). (By the way - You will pass a bridge over the stream with a sign for “Highlands of Rawley Springs” that is just down from the loft. You can go to the middle of the bridge to get a view, but please don’t go all the way over the bridge and up into that neighborhood - a troll lives under that bridge and there are “residents and guests” only postings. Even though you are our guests, you don’t want to explain and it’s not worth the hassle anyway to walk up that big hill). Further on down the road, there is a hard-to-see path that is on the left side of the road, just past and above the first big newer house on the left, that leads down into Lower Rawley. Go down that path into Lower Rawley. If you miss it, no worries, just keep going on the road past the mailboxes and little stone spring house and down the hill. Take a hairpin left on Gum Run Trail which brings you into Lower Rawley from the other end. In the 1920’s locals began building cabins in Lower Rawley and you are our guest and therefore free to walk around the troll-free neighborhood and enjoy this pretty area. Gum Run Trail dead-ends at the aforementioned newer house, and the path you missed is now on your left and runs along the fenced-in yard with the chicken coop and big black dog that barks a lot but is harmless. There may be goats in that yard as well. You can pet them. Follow the path up to the paved road and turn right to get back to the loft. In the 1800’s Rawley Springs was a retreat renowned for its “healing waters” (see photos). Fires twice destroyed the main hotels that were built – as you walk around you can still see the stone foundations of the hotels above the mailboxes next the small stone springhouse. Blue Hole: Blue Hole is a well-known swimming hole on the confusingly named Dry River. You passed over the Dry River just after you turned onto Rawley Springs Road from Rt. 33. There is a path that runs along the near side of the river, and which goes to your left as you face the river, leading to Blue Hole. If you go down Gum Run Trail from Rawley Springs Rd and turn right over the little bridge that crosses the stream, then turn right again along the dirt road you will see some cabins (and a Swiss Chalet style house) on your right, and a little father along a small stone and wood cottage. Go between the cabins and stone cottage to find that path (turn left on the path) that closely boarders the river to get to Blue Hole. It is a nice walk even if you don’t intend to swim. You will know you are there when you see some signs of “Do not do xyz” posted by the county, and look across the water and see a giant boulder overhanging Blue Hole, from which we encourage you not to jump. The Upper Westward Path. Further up the hill from Juliet’s Tower, there is a trail that leads West into the forest that may be of interest to the serious woodsman. You can continue straight up the steep slope through the woods (no path and a difficult and brush impeded climb) and in about 100 yards you will strike a trail that runs perpendicularly to the hillside. Turn right and you can hike West for miles. You should mark your entry point to the path with something so that when you return you know when to go back down the hill to the Cul-de-Sac. People get lost up here. However, if you turn left when you strike the path it will take you back to gravel roads in Upper Rawley (Cliffside Trail), so if you miss your mark on the return hike, you can always come back around the long way just by continuing on the path. We don’t recommend this trail except to those who are equipped with a topo map and maybe a gps. It’s not particularly scenic when compared to the stream-side trails, as it is uninterrupted forest.
  • Omi's place was fantastic! We loved it so much that we extended our stay. Clean, cozy, beautiful atmosphere, and close enough to town to get food if you don't feel like cooking. We will definitely stay again, thank you so much Omi.

    Rebecca2020-05-05T00:00:00Z
  • Omi’s place is amazing and exactly as described. We had an amazing time!! Everything was nice and clean, and anything we asked for, it was provided!

    Leah2020-05-02T00:00:00Z
  • This location was perfect! It was easy to get to locations to hike, and was also beautiful to just walk around. There was an issue with the power going out in the area, but they set up a generator so we had access to lights, internet and water! Loved this place, would highly recommend!

  • Omi’s place is perfect for a short gateway for one or two people who love nature and enjoy the outdoors! We liked the location of the house and the proximity of the river. Plenty of hiking options in the area.

  • Really lovely space! The room has everything you need and was thoughtfully stocked for guests. It’s right on the creek and has easy access to trails and rock climbing. Perfect for a quiet outdoorsy weekend. Would definitely stay here again!

  • Omi's place is even better than the description and pictures! I wish we could have stayed longer. It was incredibly relaxing, spacious, comfortable, and clean. It has everything you need, but I do recommend bringing easily prepared meals given the kitchenette. We had a great time walking around the creek and climbing Juliette's Tower which is a five minutes walk. We also drove about 15 minutes to the G.W. Forest for a beautiful hike and more rock climbing. Omi was incredibly communicative and accommodating. Highly recommend!

    Sarah2020-04-12T00:00:00Z
  • We really enjoyed staying at Omi’s home; it was so beautiful and relaxing. Very clean and had all the amenities we could need. We loved the location and had the windows open during the day to hear the beautiful sound of the creek. Omi was a great and respectful host and had left multiple recommendations for local trails with good detail of how to get around the area. Thank you Omi!

    Alexandra2020-03-29T00:00:00Z
  • We loved staying here so much that we added an extra night. This is a perfect get away for a solo traveler to likes to write, read or hike. The room is stylish and spacious. The stream out front is gorgeous. If you enjoy hikes with stream crossings, the trail at the end of the cul de sac is epic. Such a peaceful stay in nature. Omi was very responsive a couple of times we asked questions or need something.

  • I was in town to enjoy the dark skies found in the area at nearby Spruce Knob and had a successful photo trip. The accommodations were clean, communication was great, and there were additional thoughtful touches that went above and beyond what I’ve experienced from other hosts. I’d definitely stay again on a future trip to the area.

Cozy and inviting atmosphere with warm lighting and landscape art in the living and kitchen area. Bright and cheery in the bedrooms. Wonderful sound of the river throughout the property. Step outside to hundreds of miles of biking and hiking trails, and stocked lakes and streams. Borders national forest and a close drive to Reddish Knob.
The relaxing sound of the falling stream can be heard from anywhere on the property.
Peace and quite with a constant sound of the stream makes this place special. Plenty of biking, hiking and fishing outside the door.
  • Overall great experience. Nice, modern cabin with good outside set up. Would recommend staying here

    Joshua2020-05-03T00:00:00Z
  • Wonderful cabin - everything as described by previous guests. I have stayed in many AirBnB and this is one of the best! The personal touches of flowers and snacks were really nice as was the dog bed and dog treats for our pup. Suzanne really goes out of her way to have a clean, comfortable, and well stocked place for a mountain getaway. Highly recommend!

    Paul2020-04-29T00:00:00Z
  • Truly wonderful 10/10 stay here. It is the last house on the road up to Reddish knob, surrounded on three sides by national forest and beautiful burbling stream. You can walk to some of the best hikes (and climbs) in the valley and the mountain biking form the cabin is truly, truly world class with over 200mi of trails nearby. I love to be outside in wilderness, my partner loves to be inside in a clean, cozy place - and this cabin gave us both in spades. The cabin has been recently remodeled and is comfortable and very clean. The bed was so comfortable we checked the tag and plan to buy that mattress!

    Colin2020-04-27T00:00:00Z
  • Lovely and super cozy cabin, with the gorgeous stream running right alongside it- we needed to get away from the hysteria and madness somewhere quiet- and Suzanne's cabin was the perfect fit. Everything we needed in terms of the comforts of home and plenty of unwinding and wine by the rushing water. Suzanne was a great host, really sweet and made sure we were all set, and even checked on us when there were really bad thunderstorms in the area. If you want to get away for Serenity - this is it! Thank you Suzanne!

    Rula2020-04-11T00:00:00Z
  • Suzanne and her gone are lovely. She went above and beyond to make sure it was sparkling clean, and her communication was helpful and fast. I really appreciated the hospitality!

    Colleen2020-03-30T00:00:00Z
  • Truly a wonderful stay. So relaxing and such a magical setting. Our family would definitely come and stay again.

    Lisa2020-03-28T00:00:00Z
  • Sweet little cabin right next to the river with great hikes nearby. Our kids loved the games in the cabin, too (Lincoln Logs and Don’t Break The Ice). A great host that left wine, flowers, and candy for us. We would certainly recommend this place and hope to visit again ourselves.

    Jed2020-03-15T00:00:00Z
  • Our stay was terrific. The house was spotless, well stocked, and very comfortable. We especially liked the beautiful roses on the counter and the bowl of chocolates. Right next to the stream as promised. Hidden Cliffs trail and Hone Quarry trails are less than two miles away. It is a perfect place for hiling, photography, or just lounging and reading a book for days. Our dog also gives her endorsement. We will stay at Serenity by the Stream again.

There were so many thoughtful touches like basic breakfast items in the fridge and a basket with s’mores supplies. Not to mention, the queen bed was SO comfortable—It was like sleeping on clouds. We also loved being able to bring our pups, they had a great time running around on the large property. Overall, Ashley went above and beyond to make our stay exceptional. Thank you so much! Our home is one of 4 current family houses on an active working farm that has been in operation since the late 18th century. The home is rich in history but recent renovations make it quite comfortable. The large patio is perfect for watching the sunset over Jack Mountain or the moon rise over the Bullpasture. Clear nights are great for stargazing. Even though your cell phone won't work there is always something to do on the farm, or local outdoor attractions are not far away.
Early 20th century farm house, located on a working farm in the remote confines of Highland County. Replete with original hardwood floors and paneling, the beautiful space has two newly remodeled bathrooms and a kitchen. Sleeps eight comfortably! No phone or internet service and cell phone coverage is not available. Emergency contact is available in the home next door, along with WiFi if desired.
  • I wanted to stay somewhere away from cell phones but boy was I in for a treat!! In the evening I went out onto the porch to see the sky. It was a chili night, so I just jumped out there for a few minutes, but did that often! How can I explain? The stars were so big it seemed as if I could reach up and pinch them between my thumb and finger! Having lived in a city, and close to a big city, for so long - I think I forgot what a presence the starlit sky could be. Its magnificence was almost frightful! I plan to stay again and bring family with me so they can get back to a good baseline of a dark-filled night and light-filled day. I felt so good when I awoke - my eyes felt relaxed! I know it sounds weird, but it was noticeable! I can only attribute it to being away from the cities!! The family mementoes are touching and I felt like I was in my grandmother's home! I had a blast choosing a vhs movie and low and behild one of my favorites was there. Thank you for making this an AirBnbB

  • It a very great place. The house is cozy. Adam is nice and very easy to communicate. We have a nice time there!

  • Telescope nerds, this place is a must-stay. We booked this place for the dark night skies and the sheer number of stars here knocked our socks off. We brought our whole setup - a telescope with a camera mounted to it and an extension cord to run from the house. Worked well! The house is a quiet beauty and is steeped in family history. With all the books, games, farm animals and hiking available, it was so nice to get off the grid for a bit. Beds were warm and comfortable! Thanks to our hosts for sharing your space with us. Hope to be back soon!

    Sarah2020-02-23T00:00:00Z
  • We truly enjoyed our peaceful stay on this large and beautiful property. The starry night sky was beautiful, as were the hills and streams running through the landscape. The sheep, cows and border collie were all welcome presences, while the house itself was spacious and well-maintained. Will plan to stay again!

    Kevin Douglas2020-02-17T00:00:00Z
  • A beautiful, secluded little house with lots of character. We really enjoyed the cabin-feel of the house. The entire atmosphere of the house felt cozy and relaxed. Seeing sheep and horses outside the next day was an added bonus!

    Abby2020-02-08T00:00:00Z
  • This place is just beautiful! Everything about it makes it truly unique and its really a sight to see the stars and sky at night! We sat outside for a good while just gazing! We had snowfall and it was all of our families first time seeing snow! Let’s also add to the magic that when we looked down at the steps, there were deer footprints 😂 Santa left a little gift for the kids before our departure back to Miami. More about the place, just make sure to make your grocery stop before heading here, but everything you need is already there for cooking since the closest town is a bit ways away but not biggie if you know this before coming, the no wifi was actually a refresher for our family. There is an option for it.. but we opted to be without and watch some childhood movies and family games they had on hand as well. We will be coming back again hopefully! Thank you!

  • We had a great weekend and we felt at home in this very unique farm house which was a very untypical place to stay for the French travelers that we are! We enjoyed being surrounding by nature, being cut out from the world and experiencing a part of the past in this 18th century home. We would definitely come back for a future trip!

  • We came to see the beautiful foliage and milky way, and both the goals were well completed. The host are really nice people from the mountain, we really love to stay here. It's such a pity that our car had a problem and we have to end the trip early, other than that it's such a beautiful place to spend the fall . Definitely the place you should come and see in your life, for both the people and the view. a big thumb up!

  • This house couldn’t be in a better location! So much beauty to behold all around - smoke hole canyon, Seneca rocks, Germany valley, dolly sods... everything a nature lover could wish for. Our stay at the house was comfortable and clean. We loved the back yard goats and saw lots of wildlife in the rivers and trails around the area. Perfect spot - served our needs completely.

A perfect mountain getaway - beautiful addition to an 1840s barn has comfy beds, lots of amenities - travel light. PLEASE READ ALL INFO IN ALL SECTIONS. Cabin has NO BATHROOM (bathrm/shower is nearby), NO internet/tv. Pictures do not do justice to the property. We are 1 hr from Harrisonburg VA, 3 1/2 hrs from DC or Richmond, near hiking, biking, caves, great motorcycling, nRocks, area fests. If booked, see other listings. List correct # of guests at booking. Ask to bring a dog (extra $50 fee).
5/20 - WE ARE HAPPY TO HOST AGAIN, WITH SOME RESTRICTIONS -- DO NOT COME IF YOU ARE ILL. IF YOU SHOW SYMPTOMS OF COVID-19 WHILE HERE, YOU MUST LEAVE IMMEDIATELY. -- IF WE HAVE A PRIOR RESERVATION FOR THE NEIGHBORING CAMP CABIN BY FOLKS YOU DON'T KNOW, YOU MAY BE DIRECTED TO USE THE PORTAPOTTY AND OUTDOOR SHOWER TENT ONLY - WE'LL ADVISE AT BOOKING (* The indoor bathroom with shower is first come/first served in order of reservations. We are preventing shared bathroom use by groups not travelling together). - OBSERVE SOCIAL DISTANCING OF >6' BETWEEN YOU AND HOSTS, OTHER GUESTS. This private cabin has its own deck, fire pit, picnic table under the covered entertaining space. The views are beautiful! The cabin was built in 2017 in an expansion of an existing 1840s log cabin and you will never find another space like it! It is not like a traditional inn or hotel room. It is more like really fancy glamping! It has electricity - baseboard heat, lights, ceiling fan, free spring water for drinking or cleaning up, and free firewood for your fire pit. Coffee is available in your kitchenette. NOTE please don't entice the critters. They are crafty and relentless in trying to get your food. Don't leave it out - place it in the fridge, your cooler or the bin provided in the kitchenette. You'll see loads of deer, maybe red tail hawks, owls, or a bald eagle, fox or bear. The cabin is in a hayfield with mountain views. If you don't like wildlife, small critters, insects - don't stay here. Some years ticks are bad, and the ladybugs get in some years in the Spring or Fall. The cabin has screen doors and on the windows, and we thoroughly clean before each stay, but you may want to use our vacuum to get rid of pests if they are bad. TIP: If you haven't booked through airbnb yet, but would like to try it - you can get a $55 credit off your first trip if you join here https://www.airbnb.com/c/teresam3667?currency=USD .
This is a great getaway, or a jumping off point for spelunkers, hikers, bicyclists, motorcyclists (we are on a scenic driving and biking loop). If you like being outdoors, this place is for you! Franklin is 10 mins away and has restaurants, banks, gas, library, shops, etc. We also own the historic Ananias Pitsenbarger Farm, a National Historic Register district. The house and outbuildings are just down the hill from the main log cabin and you are welcome to explore the 1800s farmstead and get a glimpse into life "the way it was" at a self-sufficient Appalachian farm. Ask Jeff for a tour! We are near nRocks Outdoors, Seneca Rocks, Reddish Knob, hiking, climbing, caving, trout fishing locations.
  • We had an amazing weekend at Teresa and Jeff’s cabin. We were greeted by the hosts and their cute dog upon arrival. The room was clean, had all we needed and comfortable and warm for our stay. There is no internet (or phone signal) and we saw it as a plus which enabled us to spend more time together and enjoy the beautiful nature around us.

    Mohammad Reza2020-03-08T00:00:00Z
  • My newly wed husband and fur baby, Sasha, absolutely enjoyed our getaway weekend at Loafer's Glory. It was a chilly weekend but Teresa and Jeff helped us make the most of it with their hospitality and kindness. We loved exploring the property, disconnecting from our phones, watching the deer run along the mountain side, and sitting below the countless stars near the warm fire. On our first night, Sasha chased after a family of deer and Jeff, Teresa, and their dog Xena helped us find her without a second's hesitation. We will hold onto so many memories we made here and can't wait to come back in the spring and fall! Definitely would recommend this place to everyone!

    Alexis2020-03-01T00:00:00Z
  • Loafer’s Glory is a beautiful and cozy place, the perfect spot for disconnecting and taking a breath. Teresa is lovely, communicative and incredibly helpful, making our visit feel smooth and relaxing. Thank you for the wonderful long weekend!

    Laura2020-01-20T00:00:00Z
  • Loafer's Glory is a lovely spot in a stunning WV location. The farm is gorgeous and so beautifully cared for. Our dogs loved running around freely and the accommodation is sparkling clean, charming and modern! This is our second visit and we look forward coming back. The hosts are friendly, kind and helpful.

    Melissa2019-11-10T00:00:00Z
  • Private, stunning. The mountains envelop you. Disconnect and recharge!

    Lisa2019-10-12T00:00:00Z
  • Loafers Glory was one of the best AirBnBs I’ve ever stayed at. If you want to escape it all and be in peace, this is the place for you. Everything from communication, directions, hospitality, and the amenities were outstanding. I can’t wait to return and I will always recommend Loafers Glory to family and friends who want to get away to a beautiful place! Thank you Teresa and Jeff for everything!

    Atania2019-09-15T00:00:00Z
  • What an amazing getaway! Teresa was an amazing host and I cannot recommend this place enough. It is the perfect escape in a beautiful WV backdrop. The cabin has everything you need to enjoy your stay. We used the fire pit to cook some delicious meals and enjoyed our time being disconnected. There are a few hikes on the property and we found few reasons to leave while we were at loafers glory. Highly highly recommend this stay.

Ahhhh.........quiet, get away from the hussle and bussle of life. The sound of a mountain creek taking your stress away. Getting back to nature, the gentle sway of a breeze, a starry night, rain pitter patter on a tin roof or the sun shining bright and warm. A lovely get away, barely minutes from George Washington National Forest, and yet only 20 minutes to Harrisonburg and JMU.
The best of both worlds. A quiet little cottage in the country, next to a lovely little mountain river. Yet, modern luxuries are not lost. This little home offers truly high speed internet, a hot shower, a full kitchen with a dishwasher, and garbage disposal. It has a washer and dryer combo and a porch almost as big as the cottage it's self. Nestled right next to the mountains with hiking and biking trails and yet only 20 to 25 minutes to Harrisonburg and James Madison University. Harrisonburg offers a variety of restaurants and entertainment.
  • We had a great time at Jennifer's place. The communication was super easy and quick and the place looks exactly like it does on the pictures. Very clean and lovely AirBnb cottage equipped with everything you need to feel at home. Jeniffer is a great host, went way beyond to make our stay comfortable and memorable. I would absolutely recommend a stay there! Thanks Jennifer.

  • Quite cottage not too far from the bigger city of Harrisonburg for good food, or the George Washington State Park for an outside adventure. The host provided tips, and eager dogs looking for a scratch. This is a relaxing stay.

    Kyle2020-02-17T00:00:00Z
  • Jennifer was an awesome host and the place was so cozy with added amenities. It was perfect for our stay and so cute. The dogs were awesome too and were so sweet! Loved it!

  • The yurt is so lovely and well decorated. Beautiful spot on the river, fire ring outside, nice little deck with a high top table and chairs to sit and watch the river from. Kitchen has anything you need to cook a basic meal (full table setting, pots/pans, cutting board, etc) but if you plan to do any super fancy cooking then bring your extra kitchen tools (i.e. cheese grater, measuring cups/spoons). We happily cooked pork chops and some sweet potatoes with what was available and had a lovely meal. Lovely bathroom with an excellent hot shower. Over all just a lovely place to relax. We'll definitely stay again if we are in the area.

  • Wow. Marcia’s place was absolutely magical. I haven’t slept that good or been that cozy in years! Despite the cold temperatures outside, Marcia’s place was warm and welcoming. The surrounding nature was so beautiful and the yurt itself is incredibly charming. Not one complaint about this stay! I visited with a friend and it was the perfect size for us. Highly recommend!

Hang out cliff side at Pine Bluff. The home is build in the edge of a gigantic boulder which creates an amazing view looking out to Dry River. With so many outdoor areas to enjoy, you'll never get tired of exploring the yard and surroundings. The three bedroom, one bathroom house is a beautiful log and stone home with tons of character. Cozy rockers and roaring fires make this home a vacation spot that you'll never forget! Searching for a relaxing, memorable getaway? This home is located within George Washington National Park and only a few miles from High Knob Trail and Fire Tower. Walk from the house along the trail up to Blue Hole swimming hole located in Rawley Springs. The springs, which feed into the Dry River are said to be a place of healing. • The house was in a picturesque setting, high above the Dry River and was the perfect place to relax for several days. The house was well appointed and the description was accurate. The house featured 2 queen beds and a twin over full bunk bed. There was a charcoal grill and a propane grill at the house. There was a washer and dryer in the basement and the kitchen was well appointed. We will definitely stay here again.

  • Absolutely beautiful one of a kind mountain escape! You can explore just steps from the house down to the river or wake up and drink coffee and watch the deer graze in the morning! Multiple grills on the property, both gas and coal. A play set for kids! Toys etc! Multiple televisions (not that you need them) Fun for all!

    Stephanie2019-12-30T00:00:00Z
  • Trip was very fun. We were lucky that the weather wasn’t to cold and we could spend time outside by the water and on the porch. Just a couple minutes out from Harrisonburg it’s surprisingly private

    Ryan2019-12-27T00:00:00Z
  • When we arrived the cabin was very clean, there were lights on the Christmas tree, and the gas fire was lit, making for a cozy and welcoming vibe. The place is spacious and has the feel of an old cabin, while all of the wood and amenities seemed very new. The stone paths and fire pit area outside make for a very cool yard and the view off the large back deck is excellent in the winter. You can hear the running water of the river from the deck, which was very peaceful. We were very happy with all aspects of this cabin and would definitely recommend it!

Located in the Shenandoah Valley is a country farmhouse hiding on 11 wooded acres. As you pass by prime working farms, mostly owned by members of the Mennonite community, you may feel as though you have stepped back in time. Enter a long driveway through tall oak trees and come prepared to relax. Also visit the many area attractions, such as Civil War sites, historical landmarks, farmers markets, and nearby wineries with great views!
The main home and guest suite are separated by a breezeway and private guest entrance. Enter the breezeway to a spacious room at the top of the stairs. This newly finished space has a queen bed, small kitchenette with new cabinetry, a Keurig coffee maker, refrigerator and microwave, and all the tools needed to make a small meal. A separate, spacious bathroom has new Kohler fixtures. Enjoy your coffee by the window and catch the sunrise every morning. Take walks down the lane and past neighboring farms. Your host will happily provide information to make you stay most enjoyable.
We are centrally located about 1/2 hour in either direction to Harrisonburg and Staunton. One can drive Interstate-81 or the scenic Route 11. We love having access to great restaurants in both towns. Stop in for coffee on the way to Harrisonburg at the locally owned Bridgewater Coffee Shop. On the way to Staunton, pick up a sandwich at the Valley Pike Farm Market. It’s a treat to visit this restored barn or just enjoy coffee at their Rumor Mill, also located inside.
  • Hidden in the beautiful woods, charming little place. Kathy is very friendly host, and responded to us within a few minutes. A great stay!

  • Perfect place to stay for a relaxing get away. Kathy was super friendly and accommodating.

    Veronica2020-01-19T00:00:00Z
  • Kathy is an excellent and thoughtful host. She provides an easy entry, and answers any questions or needs quickly. The space is calming and clean. The bed is so comfortable, the bathroom- including a bathtub- is spacious. The location is on a farm about 30 minutes from downtown Staunton. You will have access to both small town and nature, and enjoy a quiet stay.

Looking for a private getaway that won't break the bank, and that's close to some of the best of West Virginia? This simple, secluded cabin is everything you need for a comfortable place to stay while enjoying the mountains! Relax and unwind without the distractions of technology and stress of life. The cabin has comfortable sleeping for 2 guests with space for up to 4. We're along the road to Spruce Knob, an attraction with great hiking and "WOW" views. Many other attractions are also close by.
--The country-style master bedroom has a queen-size bed with bedding provided. If you have more than 2 people in your party, you will find sheets and blankets in the bedroom closet for the double sofa bed in the living area. --The kitchen area is not a full kitchen; it is a kitchenette. The amenities include a small refrigerator, four-cup coffee pot (and some coffee, creamer, and sugar!), a microwave, and a single-burner hotplate. Kitchen linens and basic cooking and eating utensils are also provided. --The bathroom has a tub/shower combo as well as bath linens. --Enjoy a picnic in the great out-of-doors beside the cabin! There, you will find a fire pit, picnic table, and park-style charcoal grill.
We have two other cabins close by. Other than that, there is wilderness, hiking, and scenery in abundance!
  • This cabin is in quite the special spot. Almost all the way up the mountain, it feels like you are the only one up there! It's a nicely laid out space that has old charm but the basics that you need. The fire pit was wonderful to have, and the hot plate worked like a charm! It's proximity to Spruce Knob and Seneca Rocks was very convenient and made for very easy adventuring! I also appreciated the resources they had there to help me navigate the area... very helpful because cell service is limited!

  • The cabin is very homey. It’s a quiet place to relax after a long day. Beautiful scenery.

    Brad2020-03-09T00:00:00Z
  • Perfect cabin! Easy to access and plenty of privacy. Great location to go fishing or to go rock climbing/ hiking. The cabin was sparkling clean and the host was quick to respond to any questions we had. We especially enjoyed to outdoor grill and fire pit.

  • Kent, Cynthia and Marissa’s cabin was the perfect spot for a weekend getaway! The remote location in the mountains was so beautiful and allows you to truly disconnect. The cabin was complete with everything we could have hoped for and we loved the cozy, rustic interior of the space. We would love to return again in the future!

    Jerry2020-02-02T00:00:00Z
  • The cutest little clean and cozy cottage, great place to get off the grid and disconnect from technology for a weekend! We had such a wonderful trip, we spent 75% of our trip out front enjoying the mountain air! We would definitely visit here again! :)

Imagine relaxing on the front porch of a cabin on a hill and watching the sun set on the mountains. The sky darkens; crickets chirp; nature's night sounds are all you hear. The Milky Way comes into view and stars twinkle pleasantly. Sheep baaah in the distance. No technology distracts from the moment. No demands of life tax you. This is evening at the tiny house. Though it's off-grid, you'll find that there's little extra work involved. It's set up so you can just come and relax.
This cabin is perfect for you if you like to feel like you are camping, but don't want to set up the tent and haul in all the stuff. We like to camp comfortably too, so we fixed it all up for you to enjoy. The cabin/tiny house is off-grid-- no electric or running water. We provide a queen bed and all the bedding and bath linens. The shower stall in the bathroom has a hook for a camp shower (bag-style camp shower is provided). The toilet is a composting toilet- not a stinky outhouse! It is very easy to use. Just follow the directions that will be laying on the toilet lid. There is also a sink area for hand washing. Your first 10 gallon of water will be in the cabin. If you need more water, you are more than welcome to access the outdoor faucet on the back side of our dwelling. The cabin has a gas heater so that you can camp any time of the year without freezing! You will need to walk a couple hundred yards uphill from the parking area to the cabin. It is a leisurely 3 minute walk. We will be happy to help you carry your luggage if we are available. All of the "glamping" gear is quite easy to use; but if you have a question about anything at all, please reach out. We will be happy to help you.
Spruce Knob Seneca Rocks Recreation Area is outside of our front door or back door. Endless hiking, scenery, and rock climbing are right here. There is skiing, train rides, caverns, and more close by.
  • Honestly, pictures can't do the landscape justice. It is so beautiful everywhere you look, and right out your front porch. Its amazing and I'm so glad we got to sit and enjoy it for two days.

    Jess2020-05-06T00:00:00Z
  • We had the best time at Kent, Cynthia and Marissa’s place! Great location - about a 10 minute drive to Seneca Rock, and we did a few other hikes in the area as well. The tiny house is situated at the top of a hill with a beautiful view of the surrounding mountains. We had a bonfire one night and really enjoyed the space! The camp shower and compost toilet were both easy to use, and the space had thoughtful touches. We never got cold with the heater. Perfect for a relaxing getaway to the mountains and if you need some peace and quiet!

    Bridget2020-05-03T00:00:00Z
  • The place is amazing, clean, the cabin is cutting and comfortable

    Maria2020-04-19T00:00:00Z
  • Lovely refuge from the noise of everyday life in the city. We slept like babies with only the sound of the wind and occasional far away echo of sheep. Amazing view on top of a mountain and very sweet hosts that are next door for any issues.

    Jennifer2020-03-20T00:00:00Z
  • The brunks really thought of everything. Great views, great area, great vacation. Thank you very much.

    Adam2020-03-15T00:00:00Z
  • Great location for a weekend getaway without any WiFi or service. Endless places to explore in the surrounding area

    Justin2020-03-11T00:00:00Z
  • It was so much fun staying in the tiny house! The space heater kept it toasty and we never missed electricity at all, save for our lanterns and head lamps. Outside it was a beautiful view in every direction. We cooked meals on the Coleman stove and enjoyed the bright full moon. We came to see Spruce Knob and Seneca Rocks, which are fairly close by. Kent, Cynthia and Marissa were the greatest of hosts, super duper nice and friendly. We will definitely bookmark this place for a future visit!!!

    John2020-03-09T00:00:00Z
  • Kent, Cynthia, and Marissa are absolutely lovely hosts. They greeted us and even offered to help us carry our belongings. Their property/home was just as described, if not more! We thoroughly enjoyed our stay at their tiny little cabin and plan to be returning soon! 10/10 hosts!

This country apartment is quite like a motel room, only it is tucked in the corner of a hilltop dwelling with mountain views. Forget the commercial motel room beside the loud highway and come to this Quiet Country Corner where abundant hiking at places like Seneca Rocks (4 miles away) and Spruce Knob and Blackwater Falls is all around. Come and be awestruck by the gorgeous mountain views and the peacefulness of nature. Come to relax and rejuvenate your soul without draining the bank account.
You will love our space if you are looking for a pleasant place to stay that will not break the bank, yet this apartment has everything you need for a great corner to relax at while you are in the area. We remodeled a room in our lower level that was being used very little into something quite like a motel room, only with a much more country/quality touch. In addition, it will feel really private. . . one other guest cabin positioned several hundred feet away and we will be the only people around, as opposed to a motel full of people! We also think you will find it hard to locate lodging with a view like ours! The view of the mountains here is worth relaxing in front of and taking in for a while.:) Relax in the comfy queen-size bed or sit in the glider chairs by the window and read a book. You will have access to a private full bathroom with fresh linens, body wash, and shampoo provided. In addition, you will be able to use our WiFi, so if you need to do business while you are here, no problem! For your food preparation, there is a small refrigerator and a microwave in the room. Of course, what stay is complete without coffee? We have provided free coffee, creamer, and sugar as well as a four-cup coffee pot- the final touch to your home-away-from-home.
Our home is surrounded by pasture and woods. You may see some cattle grazing or a farmer making hay close by. You might even see wildlife of multiple kinds if you are quiet. We also try to keep a walking path mowed around our pasture for our enjoyment as well as yours. Our property is situated on a back road that is narrow; so watch out for other travelers, people, animals, etc.
  • Wonderful family, I was greeted when I arrived and when I left to explore the area the following morning. The room is sparkling clean, with thoughtful touches and an amazing view.

    Kelsey2020-05-03T00:00:00Z
  • Perfect as usual. I will definitely be back!

    Kristin2020-04-19T00:00:00Z
  • Such a lovely home and an even better view! They were very helpful hosts who checked in with me to make sure I was comfortable, but also gave me space and were not loud or intrusive at all. The room was beautifully decorated and had plenty of linens available, along with perfectly working wifi (surprising for the area!). They are located less than 10 minutes from Seneca Rocks where I had fun hiking and climbing. I enjoyed walking around the outside of their property and meeting one of their cats as well. If you're looking for a relaxing getaway to the mountains, I highly recommend this beautiful retreat! I will definitely be coming back soon.

    Angela2020-03-21T00:00:00Z
  • The views from the stay are beautiful. Bathroom is spacious. Everything very clean and organized. Good sized mini fridge and microwave for your use. Bring your own food, as not many food options in the area. It was a great place to stay after a day of hiking! Hosts are very kind. Would definitely stay here again. Thank you!

    Dorothy2020-03-16T00:00:00Z
  • Very beautiful Mountain View home. It was clean and cozy. Nice little electric fireplace to warm up to. The host are really sweet. If you are planning to go to Seneca Rocks this place is perfect. Everything we needed and more!

  • This is a beautiful and relaxing place ran by some very nice people.

    Clayton2020-03-01T00:00:00Z
  • This is a lovely place, off the beaten path, but well worth the trip.

    Mark2020-02-23T00:00:00Z
  • Their home is a great location that isn’t hard to find. The views are beautiful and it’s a very short drive to the town/hiking area of Seneca rocks. Kent and Cynthia were great hosts and came out to greet us when we arrived, even with the checkin process just being a code from a private entrance, and came out to say goodbye when we left. They gave us some tips for what to do in the area and were hospitable and available if needed! The bed is super comfy and we went in the winter and were very comfortable thanks to an electric fireplace that we could control. It’s a great place to stay!

Great view of Seneca Rocks and Seneca Creek has lovely fly fishing opportunities!
  • Wonderful experience! I stayed at Barbara’s place over Presidents’ Day weekend with two friends and a dog, and everything was absolutely perfect. The house is fairly remote, but Barbara gave accurate and easy to follow directions. She was very responsive and easy to communicate with before and during our stay. The house itself is set back from the road enough that it’s extremely peaceful and quiet, with a beautiful view of Seneca Rocks from the deck. It has a well stocked kitchen, with plenty of pots and pans, spices, oil, coffee, and tea. Barbara also left us a sweet little gift basket, complete with a chew toy for our pup! The house was clean, and the beds were super comfortable. The location provides easy access to great hiking; we did Chimney Top (trailhead about a 20 min. drive) and Seneca Rocks (5 min. drive). Also drove in to Davis/Thomas (about 40 min. drive) for dinner and live music one night. Overall a really enjoyable experience, highly recommend!

    Kimie2020-02-17T00:00:00Z
  • We really enjoyed staying here! Barb was a fabulous host with great communication prior to our stay and checking with us when we arrived to make sure that we were comfortable. We were celebrating my husband’s 50th birthday and Barb had left him a gift bag filled with special treats which was a thoughtful and nice touch. We enjoyed the close proximity to great hiking in the area. And being able to sit on the porch and see Seneca Rocks was really amazing. The location was very quiet and peaceful. The house was very clean and well equipped. The beds were comfy and the house was a perfect size for a family of 4. We can’t wait to come back in the spring/summer.

    Heather2019-12-30T00:00:00Z
  • Host Barbara, our host, was very communicative and friendly. We chatted back-and-forth as we planned our trip, and she was very helpful. She was flexible with us and had good directions, information, etc. I get a sense that she truly cares for her guests and their experience. Cabin The cozy cabin was, in fact, very cozy! It is a nicely-sized 3-bedroom ranch with 2 bathrooms. While we only had 2 people, it would easily accommodate 6-8. The house had all the necessities you could need, along with some very thoughtful amenities in case something was forgotten. The kitchen was very nicely stocked as far as appliances, dishes, utensils, pot, pans, etc. The house was very clean. We were permitted to bring along our medium-sized dog, who was very comfortable in the space. With all of this, we felt right at home! It also has a great porch worth mentioning, although, it was late November for us, so we didn’t have the temps. to enjoy it. Location The location of this home was convenient for exploring the area. We had an amazing view of Seneca Rocks right from the couch! Yokum’s is basically across the road should you need to stop for gas or basic groceries. The cabin is up a dirt drive and is peacefully set back off the road with a large creek separating you from it. A short drive north or south, or any direction really, there were many other sights to see. During our stay, we hiked Seneca Rocks, Spruce Knob, and the Dolly Sods. Wifi This might be minor detail to some, but the home had a great wi-fi connection. We found this to be very convenient as the entire area has spotty or no connection. Overall We are avid hikers and enjoy occasionally escaping the hustle of daily life. This did just that! We had a great experience with this host, the cabin, the location, and our general experience. We were sad to leave and definitely would return!!

  • The Cabin at Spruce Knob was warm and comfortable. The morning sunrise, through the tall front window, was a wash of red, orange, yellow, and pink. The cabin was clean and inviting. The little restaurant down the hill had good food and friendly service. Great place to get away!

  • If you are looking for a peaceful cabin in the mountains with all the amenities of home, this place is for you. It's super clean and comfortable. It has great views and is located close to lots of trails and things to do, but it is very secluded. We loved disconnecting and taking in the mountain atmosphere.

    Linda2019-11-27T00:00:00Z
  • Adorable and cozy cabin located close to awesome hiking areas including Spruce Knob, Seneca Rocks and Dolly Sods. The Gateway Cafe was very close and had delicious and affordable food. Kent, Cynthia, and Marissa were quick to reply, and very informative/ friendly. We would stay again for sure!

    Taylor2019-11-17T00:00:00Z
  • This place is the real deal. An actual mountain cabin on a mountain, the highest in WVA. So close to great overlooks & hikes on Spruce Knob as well as other trails not too far away. The place is right in the middle of pristine natural beauty. Views abound. The cabin is modern and rustic at the same time. The living space is very comfortable, a great place to hang out, play games, read, cook and enjoy Mother Nature. The beds are super comfortable and there are ample blankets in case it gets cold (which it did when we were there!). The water pressure in the showers is also great. Check in was easy. Communication with the hosts was timely and ample. The WiFi is also great if you're looking to stream shows or watch movies. What a gem this place is!

My place is close to great views and family-friendly activities. My place is good for couples, solo adventurers, business travelers, families (with kids), big groups, and furry friends (pets) with a 25.00 per pet charge for entire stay.
The hideaway is secluded and nestled in the woods just above the entrance to the Smoke Hole Canyon, where the South Branch of the Potomac flows. This river is stocked in months of Jan, Feb, March, April and May and in fall month of October, but there is fish in this stream all year. Within less than an hour you can be climbing Seneca Rocks or exploring Seneca Caverns, Zip- lining at nelson Rocks, sight-seeing at Black water Falls or ski at Canaan Valley or Snowshoe Resort. Smoke Hole caverns and shop is just 30 minutes from here also. We have 2 golf courses close by Fisher Mtn. just 15 minutes and Valley View 30 minutes. There is a local park named Ruddle Park with walking paths and children's play items for them to enjoy if you want to walk or run around the park a few laps. The river is right beside the [park also. If you would want to bring your own kayaks you can, I'm sure you will have an enjoyable ride down the river.
We are 12 mile to the closest restaurants. Korner Shop,The Star, Foxes Pizza, Subway are all nice restaurants in Franklin.MoeFatz is located 3 mile south of Franklin on the right. Going north it is 17 mile to Petersburg, where you will find Sue's country kitchen, Poor Daves Restaurant, Family Traditions both, McDonalds, Pizza Hut
  • Lovely place in a beautiful mountain setting. Perfect for decompressing and relaxing. Very clean, private, spacious but cozy and very comfortable. All of the kitchen and bedding/bath supplies we needed. Very nice and helpful hosts!

  • The Hideaway is a real gem hidden within the beautiful mountains of West Virginia. It is an oasis from civilization that offers a sense of Serenity, privacy, and a return to nature. Come here if you need to decompress from reality. We have stayed here before and this was a repeat visit, and certainly won't be our last. It was special to spend Thanksgiving in such a lovely setting. The house is super spacious and the hot tub is soothing and has a spectacular view of both the sunrise and sunset. Plenty of birds and wildlife visit the area to enjoy. Rhona and Carroll our wonderful hosts and go out of their way to make you feel right at home. They are also super accomadating as well. The surrounding area hosts Eagle Rock, which is a stunning view of the mountainside where you can view Eagles soaring above, and visit the resting place of William Eagle, a soldier in the Revolutionary War. Nice walk up Reed's Creek Road as well, which enters into the National Forest. Great stay at The Hideaway!

The house is roomy and relaxing with wonderful touches throughout. There is ample land to use for outdoor pursuits, a concrete patio for relaxing or playing games (we enjoyed a few games of nighttime ladderball), a large field for some of the best stargazing you will ever see, picnic tables, a bbq grill, fire pit and more. Our group had a fantastic time, and we hope to return again.

  • The place was great, perfect for us. Not fancy but with all the little things that make for a great stay. Access to Prime, Netflix etc was great after a long day of hiking was a really nice plus. Great yard for the dogs. Very quiet and private, era little traffic on the adjacent road. The only drawback was the single bathroom, but we worked that out. Thanks Will for a wonderful experience for our family.

It is a very quiet area here and feel you would enjoy staying here.
Grandmas house is best for 4 people here.
Neighbors are family and is the only house in sight of Grandmas House where you will be staying.

  • Grandma's House is everything that's lovely about West Virginia: a beautiful retreat in a lovely valley. It's old fashioned and far away from it all... A great place to escape with friends and see a special part of the world.

Welcome to Camp Bearwallow! This is an experience! An escape to mid century Appalachia -- Everything you need to step back in time, with no indoor toilet, while still having the luxury of electricity! Easily heat water on the stove for baths and coffee, keep your drinks chilled in the refrigerator, and still have the experience of an outdoor toilet, bathing in a wash basin (or in warmer months, an outdoor shower), and cooking outdoors over a fire. 20 min to Harrisonburg #campbearwallow
Camp Bearwallow is an experience! Enjoy the peaceful setting, with a stream running through, hiking and mountain biking in the neighboring national forest, and simply relaxing with nature! All while having the amenities, of heat, electricity, and a kitchen! The kitchen has the major appliances: refrigerator with freezer, oven, stove, microwave, toaster, and coffee maker. It even has “running water” with 5 gallon water jugs and a camp water pump, making dish washing easy! Along with pots, pans, dishes, utensils, a French press and coffee grinder. We stock the basics, water (15 gallons, and we will bring more if you need it, just let us know when you're switching over to your last bottle. There’s also bottled water in the refrigerator, and extra under the bed, if you need it. Also in the refrigerator, you’ll find basic condiments. In the pantry, along with the dishes and silverware, you’ll find pancake mix, maple syrup, salt, pepper and oils. There are also teas and coffee: beans, ground, and instant! The bedroom has a bunk bed; full size bed on the bottom and twin bed on top. There will be fresh linens on the beds, with extras stored, with the linens for the living room futon, if needed. Towels and cloths: kitchen towels and dish cloths, bath towels, hand towels, wash cloths and “dirt towels” (located by the front door), are provided. There is a wash basin for bathing in the bedroom with soap, shampoo and conditioner provided. Extra bath towels and wash cloths are stored below; along with toiletries you may have forgotten. The living room has front porch access, and is equipped with a futon that folds out just larger than a twin bed. Linens for the futon are located in the storage Ottoman, along with the board games. There is also a well worn in green reclining chair that is original to the cabin, the perfect place to read, or nap! A play-kitchen with play food and dishes is also in the living room, a great indoor activity for the children on rainy days or sleepy mornings. We keep a stock of local interest books, maps and tourism attractions; as well as a few novels. You’re welcome to take the novels with you, if you’re not done reading. If you can, leave one behind! The toilet is a clean Johnny house, with toilet paper and cedar shavings, to keep things fresh. There is extra toilet paper, in the cabin, which you may want to take out with you — on cool winter nights, warm toilet paper is nice. :-) There is a battery powered lantern (and extra batteries) in the cabin to light the way to the outhouse, as well as motion-sensor solar lights. Cleaning products are located below the pantry, if you need them, but we have a cleaning team, just leave the place broom swept, with dishes clean, we’ll take care of the rest!

  • Ashley’s space offered us the perfect mixture of a rustic camping experience with the comfort and amenities that made it more enjoyable with three little ones! The house was clean and cozy and all the cooking basics were provided! Such a lovely little spot on the creek, we had a great time!

  • This little cabin was wonderful to stay in for a long weekend. I came with my partner and dogs and we had a blast! Even though we were faced with everything locally being closed due to COVID-19, we had a great time hiking around and using the fire pit to cook our meals. The cabin is clean and stocked with everything you could need. A comfortable space and the host is phenomenal! Super nice and helpful!

  • A large, secluded house on gorgeous grounds with plenty of space for communal meals. Kitchen was well equipped. The indoor whirlpool tub was a pleasant surprise! Responsive host.

  • Great house and a beautiful location. The drive there was amazing.

    Daniel2019-10-27T00:00:00Z
  • Excellent location in a relatively secluded and forested area. Very convenient to spruce knob. The house plan is a little weird, but the amazing camp fire area, good kitchen, bbq grill made the trip enjoyable. The driveway really could be a challenge for some cars to go up to, although our SUV had no issues. The garage is huge (4+ car garage) and can be convenient for any gear you carry. Enjoyed the stay! Will recommend!

  • Jeff and Teresa were fantastic hosts. My fiancee, our golden retriever, and I camped on their beautiful property and thoroughly enjoyed every minute we were there. The scenery and hiking are awesome!

    Lawton2018-10-14T00:00:00Z
  • We loved our stay here - highly recommended! We camped close to the lodge, and enjoyed a stunning night sky and peaceful night sleep. In the morning, we enjoyed Teresa and Jeff's hospitality over a cup of coffee. And we toured their expansive, beautiful grounds - full of trails, historic sites, and Chanterelle mushrooms. :) We visited from DC -- it's not far and was the perfect getaway for us.

    Stuart2018-09-03T00:00:00Z
  • Our weekend on the property was the perfect escape. The property is open to explore along with several suggestions of local areas from Teresa and Jeff. We will certainly be returning and I highly recommend!

    Tyler2018-07-07T00:00:00Z
  • Great property, great hospitality, a must stay if you are planning on being in the area.

    Troy2018-06-16T00:00:00Z
  • When we arrived Teresa and her dog Xena greeted us and showed us around the property. She provided us with local tips and brochures for attractions around the area. We had access to plenty of firewood, shower, outdoor restroom, spring water and any little thing that we could forget. The views were great, hospitality was unbeatable and our dogs loved the open atmosphere. I can't think of 1 thing that would change to make our stay better. Absolutely amazing!!

    Allyson2018-06-08T00:00:00Z
  • I was looking for somewhere to camp that wouldn't require me to get a backcountry permit but would still give me the isolation of trail hiking. This place was perfect. As soon as I showed up I was shown the different places I could stay, and the options really were "from mild to wild." Every spot was scenic and quiet. When I was late getting started back to camp one evening, they even offered to give me a ride to my site so I could use the atv headlights to see while I made camp. You won't find better hosts with more knowledge of the area than here. I would gladly come back.

    Meghan2017-09-04T00:00:00Z
  • My husband and I had an amazing time at Teresa's. We camped at the top of a hill in a big field which was perfect for star gazing at night. The property is gorgeous and there is so much space. Teresa and her husband were so welcoming and accommodating. We wished we could have stayed longer and would definitely recommend it to friends and family.

    Sandy2017-08-20T00:00:00Z
  • What a treat! The description does not do this place justice. I had hoped for a place to pitch a tent and crash for the night. Instead I found a wonderful couple who gave me a tour of the whole place, showed me 100s of possible tent sites, and invited me to join them for dinner. If you stay here, make sure to ask them to see the top pasture and sunset patio! They are worth the hike.
