  • What a lovely place! After a 4 hour drive down it was definitely worth it. Katie had lit the fire for us for when we arrived which was lovely! The place was gorgeous and so clean too. Had such a homely feel and it felt like we were in the middle of nowhere! Perfect stay and the perfect host! Helped us with any problems we may of had and made the stay very comfortable so thank you! Would love to come back in the future.

  • This was a lovely place to stay. Relaxed, homely, cosy and quiet. The thoughtful touches from the host Helen, including having the fire lit ready for our arrival, were much appreciated . Only 25 minutes walk to the beach and 35 minutes walk to the Gosforth Hall Inn for their gorgeous pie and chips. The log burner was easy to use and kept the cabin lovely and toasty. Bathroom was also lovely and warm. It was great to wake up with the wonderful view from the big window and watch the birds have their breakfast as we ate ours. Would definitely return for another visit and explore the area a bit further.

  • This beautiful cabin is the perfect getaway for a couple looking for some time alone. Helen is a lovely host, who had lit the log fire for our arrival which warmed us up perfectly in the February weather. We can't wait to stay again soon!

  • What an amazing cosy homely log cabin. A very special long weekend for my partner and I as he proposed whilst having a drink wrapped up warm sat on the decking listening to the owl. Amazing views once the mist cleared. We shall be back as we have very fond memories. Thank you so much Helen for allowing Gareth and I and our 2 fur babies to stay.

Little Swinside Cottage has an idyllic hillside setting and superb views stretching from the Vale of Lorton to the Scottish mountains. Wonderful walking at all levels, mountain biking in Whinlatter, dog friendly, hot tub available, good wifi, log burner, very peaceful, Keswick 8 miles.
Little Swinside Cottage is one of 3 cottages at High Swinside perched on the slopes of Swinside fell overlooking the peaceful Lorton Valley. The Vale of Lorton is definitely one of the Lake District's hidden gems. Little Swinside is a converted former barn attached to High Swinside Farm. Some of the rooms have lovely oak beams and other original features. The cottage is centrally heated and very snug! On the ground floor of the cottage there is a patio room with its own terrace where you'll find table and chairs for enjoying the view or eating al fresco. The patio room includes a double sofa bed that can be used for a child or friend to sleep in if you wish (for a small extra charge). Most of the rest of the cottage accommodation is upstairs. The double bedroom is beamed and again has lovely views; the bed has a comfortable pocket-sprung mattress. The bathroom with bath and 'shower over' is just next door, while the sitting/dining room and kitchen lie beyond. The sitting room has a comfortable sofa, wood burning stove, tv/dvd, and a dining area looking out into the valley. The galley kitchen is well-equipped with stove, slow cooker, fridge, microwave, mixer. Guests also have access to a washing machine, tumbler drier, and freezer if they need (there is a small charge made for using the tumbler drier).
Lorton is a serene and unspoilt Lakeland valley that has remained largely off the beaten track despite its charm and proximity to Keswick and Cockermouth. The walking is excellent - with open fell access on the high Grasmoor fells behind the house, and beautiful walks at all levels throughout the Vale. See the captions under the photos for more idea of how much there is to do and see here, or if you search 'high swinside diana' you can see more walking and activities information on my site.
  • Highly recommended. Such a lovely welcoming and spotless cottage in beautiful surroundings. Diana is on hand for anything you might need but also respects privacy, perfect host. The views all around the cottage are fabulous. The location is fantastic if you prefer to be away from it all, but still within easy drive of towns and lakes. Despite the strong winds and rain during our stay this did not put us off as we cosied in front of the fire, feeling very safe inside as all the windows are new. Could not fault this cottage.

    Micheal2020-03-18T00:00:00Z
  • Diana’s place is very comfortable and cosy , easy to find in a lovely part of the quieter area of the Lakes . The cottage had everything we needed and Diana was very helpful and friendly. The cottage is very clean and spacious. The hot tub is an added bonus worth requesting when you book with beautiful views over the valley . Diana was very attentive in ensuring the hot tub was ready for us when we returned in the afternoon.

    Sarah2020-03-16T00:00:00Z
  • We had a fantastic stay at Diana's cottage in High Swinside. We visited nearby villages, enjoyed some pub lunches and went on a few walks to take in the scenery. Our favourite was our walk around the very scenic Buttermere Lake. Diana made us feel so welcome and was extremely accomodating throughout our stay. The hot tub is a lovely addition- very relaxing and enjoyable even in the drizzly British weather!

    Laura2020-03-12T00:00:00Z
  • Lovely weekend, great views and Diana was very attentive and was there when/if we needed anything

    Ryan2020-03-08T00:00:00Z
  • Diana’s cottage is lovely! The remote location, stunning views and wonderful hospitality really made our stay special. The cottage is wonderfully equipped, super cosy with the log burner & is the perfect place to relax, unwind & enjoy some of Cumbria’s wonderful walks & scenery. Our dog loved his stay just as much as we did. Diana has thought of everything! The hot tub is an added bonus. We cannot wait to return! Highly recommend this little gem.

    Hannah2020-03-06T00:00:00Z
  • My time at high swinside was beautiful, the house was so so cosy and the views were breathtaking, even in the rain!! The pictures really don’t do it justice. Location was amazing and Diana was wonderfully helpful and kind. Will 100% be returning and recommending to friends. The location was peaceful and private with not a car in sight and you could fully relax in the hot tub gazing at the surrounding mountains and hills. There is plenty of beautiful walks close by and Diana was very helpful in recommending some. A unique aspect I really liked was that It was so eco-friendly with the recycling and compost stations. The cottage was toasty and had everything you could need and even Netflix to sign into!! Five stars do not do the place justice.

    Hollie2020-03-01T00:00:00Z
  • Had a wonderful 2 nights stay. My only regret was I didn’t book for longer, which I will next time. Superb views, and walks from the cottage, which was so well equipped with everything we needed. Would highly recommend. Thank you Diana

We are located on the edge of the Lake District National Park, within easy driving distance of both the historic towns of Cockermouth and Keswick, and also the stunning Solway Coast.
In addition to our five fully serviced caravan pitches, we have a popular camping pod here in our pretty gardens and caravan site on the edge of the Lake District, Cumbria. Add a touch of glamping to your break away. Enjoy your holiday or short break in our camping pod, which has so many advantages over traditional camping, and is ready for you to move in to! No fighting with canvas, and plenty of mod cons to enhance your time away. All you need to bring is towels and bedding!
Just a couple of miles from Greysouthen, you will find the historic town of Cockermouth. It is famed for its large number of small independent shops selling antiques, books, speciality foods and more. It has a fantastic selection of restaurants & coffee shops, and is also home to Jennings Brewery, the Kirkgate Arts Centre and the Taste Cumbria Food Festival. A little further on the A66 (about 20 minutes' drive) you'll find the adventure Capital – Keswick. There are too many treasures to mention around the Lake District, but you are in close proximity to many of the finest lakes such as Bassenthwaite, Crummock, Loweswater, Buttermere and Derwentwater. Mountain biking is available in Whinlatter Forest (England's only true mountain forest!), as well as Go Ape. Whether you are in to walking, biking, fishing, riding, or just wandering around the area, you will find plenty to do!
  • A perfect place to stay. Everything you need in a cosy pod. 5*, can't wait to go again.

  • This camping pod is cozy and perfect for those who want to pare down, escape the hustle and bustle of life and just live simply. The views are beautifully serene and we were toasty and warm, thanks to the big heater our hosts provided. We welcomed in the New Year in this little pod and had a wonderful time reminding ourselves that there really isn't a lot we need to be happy. A must-stay! Thank you to our hosts for everything.

  • We stayed one night in the cabin. It was exactly as described, with additional thoughtful touches thrown in. We stayed with 2 quite young children who thought it was an amazing adventure, they were a sad we weren't staying longer.

This is a lovely cottage on the bank of the river Cocker, in the centre of Cockermouth. It has a good sized garden and outside seating area, lounge with wood burning stove, kitchen, 1 double bedroom, 1 single bedroom and a shower room/toilet. We have now added broadband to the cottage
The Cottage has a cosy lounge with wood burning stove, a well equipped kitchen, a double and single bedroom. The garden is accessed from a door in the lounge, down steps to a sheltered terrace area. There is a large terrace next to the river, and a large garden. The Cottage is in a quiet area, yet in the centre of Cockermouth, thee are several good restaurants, pubs, cafes and supermarkets just a short walk away.
The Cottage is close to supermarkets, shops, pubs and restaurants.
  • We had a lovely time here, good location for exploring different areas of the Lakes. Would recommend Castle bar for a nice dog friendly pub. Thanks :)

A whole self catering house to yourself within 30min (by car) to the heart of the Lake District for less than a hotel room in the Lakes. Right on the coast too! This is not a hotel or serviced BnB! Not in a car? ....Not to worry, bus stop is just outside the house and train station is 10 mins walk away :) All public transport journeys are approx x2 car journey times. Note: Although this house can comfortably sleep 6, i would not suggest 6 adults unless for very short stay due to living space.
Parking: Free on street parking outside of the house. This is 2 bedroomed house made into 3 bedrooms as no one ever used the other reception room! One bedroom is downstairs consisting of a bunk bed with double at bottom and single on top. This is at the front of the house and is therefore subject to traffic noise of a residential area - as is the master bedroom upstairs, but the house is double glazed so not very noisy. One single and one double bedroom upstairs. It is fully kitted out with all you will need, including WiFi. Of course you need to bring your own devices and use your own data package if you really want! There is a TV in the lounge. The house is well maintained and all the furniture is comfortable and functional. Not everything matches however! Some guests take exception to this - but this house is what it is. The pictures give an accurate overview of the house and it's contents. Damage has been done to items in the house over the time that I have been running it under Airbnb - and I update items as I see fit/need to due to damage/can afford to. The most damage is to carpets - which unfortunately are not cheap to replace! However, they are still clean and completely functional.
Harrington is a little village on the edge of Workington. It has it's own little community and a great set of shops for such a small place and a couple of pubs. Asda 10 mins walk one way or 5 mins the other is a post office, convenience store, butchers, green grocers, pharmacy, pie shop and hairdressers. There are a couple of pubs in walking distance and 2 takeaways too. The best place to grab a great pub meal is 10 min walk away at the Brewery House hotel ((SENSITIVE CONTENTS HIDDEN) it!)
  • Spot-on place great value for money clean tidy everything you need close to amenities good communication would definitely stay again and recommend to others

  • Jenny’s place was very easy to get to, near plenty of amenities and attractions. The house was neat and clean. There were also a few board games that my family and I get to enjoy in the evening, we especially love those. Jenny left lots of leaflets and a set of instructions so that we are equipped for our stay. You can also see the ocean around the house, definitely worth visiting!

The Croft is a beautiful cottage in the heart of town, overlooking the river and a short walk from the shops, pubs, restaurants and other amenities. It is a luxurious, well equipped base from which to explore the Lake District. We welcome all visitors, their children and pets.
The cottage has been equipped to provide everything you need for a comfortable home from home including Wi-Fi, TV, books of local interest, hairdryer, dog bed and bowls, travel cot and high chair.
Cockermouth is the birthplace of William Wordsworth and his house, now run by the National Trust, is nearby. The cottage has lovely views over the River Cocker and Church to the rear. It overlooks the Bowling Green at the front. You can take a pleasant stroll along the river to Harris Park, a great place to walk the dog! The nearest supermarket is 200m away and there are many pubs selling Real Ale in the locality. Try a pint of Jennings, brewed in the town, it is highly recommended. The beautiful lakes of Buttermere, Crummock Water, Loweswater and Bassenthwaite are all just a short drive away, as is the Solway Coast.

We look forward to welcoming you to enjoy the secluded Western Lakes' wild, coastal beauty... It's a special corner of the world-with Lewis Carroll having found inspiration for Alice's Wonderland here, ideally placed Scafell ascent route at Wasdale Head, all packaged in a 180 year old, off grid, converted coach house. Open plan yet cozy; quirky & unique - a welcoming home for relaxing and unwinding with family and friends in front of the fire with books and board games aplenty!
Welcome to Volcano! Literary & WWII history, world renowned walks, pubs, tea rooms, miniature steam railway, and kindness of strangers: visiting the Western Lakes is like stepping back in time. Plenty of windows and 8 foot ceilings lend themselves to a feeling of openness, whilst its location in a small group of neighbours on a shared, private courtyard amongst woodland, with a multifuel stove (i.e. not the instant 'flick for heat' of central heating, but the satisfaction of a fire well built and tended!), make for a welcoming retreat in Summer or Winter. Volcano's a unique and quirky cottage; and we've put lots of detail about it throughout this listing and in the House Rules. Please have a good read through, including the 'Other Things to Note' section, to help set the magical mood, and feel free to ask any questions you may have. What our family, friends and Guests love... "No wifi, no TV, unique, tranquil, cozy sofas, board games, log burner, big bath, comfy beds, amazing shower, morning mountain views, lovely neighbours, lots of books, imaginative decor, a house with a personality, great information folder with clear instructions." We enjoy adding to our collections, and rearranging furniture to change up the look a bit. The photographs show this in action; so, the cottage will have the feel of the photos, but everything mightn't be exactly where it has been photographed as being, if something even better for the space has come along in the meantime :-) 'OFF GRID' The 'off grid-ness' relates to all the ways that matter; and all the ways that don't: it's a wonderfully workable home. Off grid refers to... * The lack of internet or wifi in the cottage, and the reduced/non existent mobile phone reception inside the house (there's a secret windowsill where you can pick it up, and which we'll gladly tell you: but, interestingly, is rarely asked for!). * There's no traditional central heating (although keeping warm is straightforward with the multifuel stove plus other heating sources in the cottage and we welcome happy guests in all seasons), no live TV, an immersion heater for hot water, range oven which uses calor gas rather than mains gas (although you'd never know it), a septic tank, an unadopted track for access - with a few hearty potholes... ...and generally just off-grid from the speed and pressures of everyday life. Mainly it's a fun, restorative way in which to reconnect to the Lakeland landscape and each other, and we get a lot of guests thanking us for not having wifi in place, but books and board games instead. It's a working home, rather than a show home: a friendly spider will inevitably have built a web in the ten minutes before your arrival, somewhere could always do with a lick of paint, and the moles sometimes pop through the lawn. It means it's wonderfully practical for muddy wellies, kids and families; with nothing too precious, where relaxing is the order of the day. KEEPING WARM & HOT WATER In addition to the big multifuel stove in the living room, we also have freestanding oil heaters in each room, plinth fan heaters in the kitchen, and a large immersion heater to take care of hot water provision in the kitchen and bathroom (although not the radiators) should you be too worn out after your Lake District explorations to make a fire on any given evening before settling into a long bath :-) REMOTENESS Volcano is remote enough that your nearest chain supermarket is half an hour's drive away, but well serviced and connected, with locally provisioned shops, pubs, restaurants and a good road system. We have neighbours on either side, who we share the front courtyard with; and are wrapped around with fields and woodland; all a short track away from the 'main' road which will link you to the rest of the Western Lakes (and beyond...!) The Airbnb Itinerary and our Welcome Pack contains lots of information on smaller local shops (less than 3 minutes drive from the cottage) as well as other tips and recommendations in the area; from beer based, to the La'al Ratty miniature railway (our personal favourite)...! LAYOUT OF COTTAGE We have three good sized double bedrooms, one of which, known as the Alice (in Wonderland) Bedroom occupies the whole of the top floor, and has four Velux windows, so is very light, bright and airy; it is accessed via a private staircase with a curtain which provides privacy, although the bedroom itself doesn't have a door. The two other double bedrooms have their own distinct characters, and are on the middle floor, along with the family bathroom and a large landing area. We have three additional single floor mattresses which help with configurations for larger groups and families, taking occupancy up to nine. These mattresses can be made up with a full set of linens, in the master Alice Bedroom, The Blue Room and/or on the large landing area. We have one family bathroom with a long, deep, free-standing dream of a bath and a lovely rain shower; complete with dimmable lighting for relaxing soaks. PARKING There is parking for up to two cars in the private, off road courtyard which we share with our two neighbours; with a short, characterful (in terms of the potholes) dirt track that approaches it. Our house is at one end of the track, our local pub is at the other. ORIGINAL FEATURES & ECCENTRICITIES Our ground floor has the original cobbles and troughs of the coach house. This means practicality in spades for wet coats and muddy wellies; but a potential trip hazard too. You easily get used to it, and it's an amazing feature, but it's worth bearing in mind. Our sofas are really great for slouching; and are made up of old flags which we have collected over the years. They have a unique, worn, character which we love; but aren't your typical sofa covering. There is a TV that connects to a DVD player for playing DVDs and music: i.e. no live TV and no wifi, for off grid bliss. We have an eclectic assortment of films and music at the cottage, or you're welcome to bring your own. LOCAL HISTORY If you're a history buff, try entering Holmrook Hall into Wikipedia for more detail about the history of the cottage's links to Lewis Carroll, and how it came by its name: (HMS) 'Volcano'. We also have lots of locally sourced history, research and books at the cottage which you are welcome to browse. LAKE DISTRICT ATTRACTIONS Please have a look at our last section of photographs for ideas for activities, and things to do with younger family members. Volcano is well situated to enjoy peace and relaxation; whilst also being well placed for a variety of day trips: be it Go-Ape adventuring; or visiting many of the Lakes which give the area its name.
Neighbourhoods don't come much better than this if you like a lack of street lights and a pub at the end of the track... Our cottage is the middle of three, off a private courtyard, with parking for up to two cars. The courtyard in turn accesses a private dirt track, which winds down to the River Irt, and fields and footpaths galore... REMOTENESS Volcano is remote enough that your nearest chain supermarket is half an hour's drive away, but well serviced and connected, with local shops, pubs, restaurants and a good road system. The Airbnb Itinerary and our Welcome Pack contains lots of information on smaller local shops (less than 3 minutes drive from the cottage) as well as other tips and recommendations in the area; from beer based, to the La'al Ratty miniature railway...! LITERARY REFERENCES Volcano was originally part of the stables for the Hall, which was home to the Lutwidge family, aka Lewis Carroll's (of Alice in Wonderland fame) Uncle; and, as you exit the cottage straight onto tracks and fields, it's not hard to imagine where the inspiration for timekeeping hares and lazy caterpillars came from! OUR VILLAGE The village has the life essentials. In no particular order, but I know what our priorities are :-) a children's playground, our local pub, small wildflower meadow/village ecology garden, mechanic's garage, agricultural feed store, post office, and petrol station come comprehensive grocery store stocking local goods. LOCAL TOWNS Drigg, Santon Bridge, Gosforth and Seascale (all around ten minutes drive from the cottage) have another good two handfuls of pubs, a Co-op, convenience store, takeaways, and small gift shops. MUCKING ABOUT ON THE WATER Seascale has a lovely beach, with spectacular sunsets across the Irish Sea towards the Isle of Man, and Ravenglass is The Lakes' only costal village, with a beautiful estuary for 'mucking about on the water' Swallows and Amazons style, or just watching the sun set over the dunes from the pub. Coniston Water, the setting for Swallows and Amazons, is about an hour's drive away. EXPERIENCE THE 'REAL' LAKE DISTRICT The Western Lakes are a privilege to discover. Away from the well trodden tourist trails, Volcano is less than 2 miles from the beach, and less than two miles from the Lake District National Park, with a Scafell Pike route at Wasdale Head a beautiful 10 mile drive away. As the road to this route up Scafell follows the contours of Wastwater, it inevitably makes it a slower drive than the ten miles suggests, as the views are so stunning! Ambleside and Windermere are an hour and a half drive, Lancaster around two hours, and Carlisle a similar distance in the opposite direction. The Cumbrian Coast Mainland Railway is one of the most beautiful railway journeys in England, and it delivers you to within a half hour walk from our door. The Cumbrian Coastal Line, and La'al Ratty (Cumbrian for: 'Little Railway') have featured in a BBC programme entitled 'Britain's Greatest Railway Journeys', hosted by Michael Portillo. Muncaster Castle is also just a five minute drive away and its Owl Sanctuary, falconry show and incredible views (not to mention, haunted bedroom!) make it one of the Lake District's hidden tourist gems. BRITAIN'S FAVOURITE VIEW WINNER A recent winner of 'Britain's Favourite View', Wastwater is 7 miles from our small village; which manages to squeeze in a post office come agricultural feed store, a petrol station come village store, and, the all important pub - a four minute walk (& only because of the lack of street lights!) directly from our front door to theirs... COTTAGE OF HISTORIC INTEREST During the the Second World War the cottage was part of a Royal Navy land base at Holmrook Hall, and was named HMS Volcano. It was the home of the bomb and munitions training school between 1943 and 1946, with a primary purpose of teaching munitions and explosive demolition to Royal Navy personnel and to special forces including many Norwegians. It was a top secret establishment and the locals were told that the hall had been requisitioned as a recuperation hospital for those who had suffered shipwrecks; a version of events many believe to this day. We have compiled a folder of local history for Guests at the cottage, which makes for fascinating reading.
  • The biggest thank you to Caroline and Carl for having our family stay at ‘Volcano’. It’s our FIFTH stay in this amazing location and the house looks better than ever. Thank you so much for wine and popcorn, and all the thoughtful toiletries. From the firewood and coffee to the blankets it was all perfect and comfortable despite it being a stormy February. We love it there and felt at home straight away! Our children had the best holiday, we explored the lake, beach and little train. The house was comfortable and beautiful. Thank you so much. We couldn’t recommend you enough, one of our favourite places in the world xxx

  • We booked Volcano last minute for my mums birthday , trying to find accommodation for one night for a group of 9 was really difficult at short notice, but Carl and Caroline even from all the way in America really couldn’t do enough for you , they responded quick with clear and informative responses. Booking was very easy . The only thing that let this trip down was the £150 cleaning charge(which needs to be made clearer) on top of the advertised amount on the booking which you have to pay separately for after your booking has gone through . The house itself, booking for such a large group I was worried about the accommodation, but to arrive at such a remote and stunning property myself and my group of 8 really where blown away. The location is stunning, the house itself it really quirky yet very homely, equipped with everything you can imagine and stocked with the essentials . Beds where really comfortable and the most stunning bath and huggge rain shower . The biggest thing for me was how clean everywhere was . Really really recommend. We ate in and would highly recommend the Gosforth Hall Inn, the food was amazing the atomosphere was so relaxing and snug we had lunch and returned later for our dinner as the fires where lit, the company was brilliant . Highly recommended.

  • We stayed at Caroline and Carl's place in a group of 6 for a birthday, they made everything so easy, and the house was spectacular. The location is great, with everything you could want or need close by, the whole experience so enjoyable, and they added really thoughtful personal touches which made the stay even better! I would recommend this place 100% and hopefully we'll get to visit again!

  • Volcano is a quirky, stylish and comfortable place to spend time in the Western Lakes. We loved all being together around the log burner in the evenings and the bedrooms were comfortable and warm during a chilly spell in the Lakes. Caroline and Carl were always super prompt to respond to any questions before and during our stay. Would definitely return!

Thoughtful things like eggs, butter, bread and milk made for a pleasant arrival without having to make a mad dash to the shop (which is nearby). • The cottage is in an ideal location to explore the lake district, and there is a lovely public footpath very close by too. The room is large and clean with a comfy bed, lots of plug sockets and a desk. The bathroom is clean and has a bath and shower. Helen welcomes other dogs, her collie Ben the dog is really sweet but wary of other dogs, however this wasn't a issue as I kept my dog in the large room for the night I stayed. Very good value!

Clean and comfortable annex to my house. Totally separate access. This is in the west Lake District. 5 mins from the town of whitehaven. This accommodation is particularly good for cyclists wishing to do the coast to coast ride. We are a five minute ride to the beginning of the track. We offer secure lock up for cycles in the conservatory attached to the annex. Will accommodate 2 people (double bed)
  • Regularly use Marie’s place for work and always enjoy staying here!

  • comfortable and convenient base for exploring the area, very good value accommodation

    Elizabeth2019-10-14T00:00:00Z
  • I wasn’t really sure what to expect here. We needed somewhere to spend a night in Whitehaven prior to attempting to cycle the Coast to Coast, and the price was right. I was delighted with what I found. Access is to the rear of a large semi detached house on an ordinary street, up a couple to steps into a small conservatory which leads into the lounge/kitchen. There’s loads of room for two to sit in comfort, and the kitchenette has all the basics. We heated a ready meal in the microwave and used the same for our porridge in the morning. The accommodation has its own staircase leading to the bedroom and shower room. All well equipped and clean. Sometimes your heart sinks a bit in B&B places when you come across a laminated notice, but when it says “Please help yourself to extra towels” it’s rather lovely. Although we didn’t meet her, our host could not have been more obliging and I’d happily recommend this place, especially as a really good value stop over before an epic cycling trip.

    Neil2019-09-23T00:00:00Z
  • Perfect location and base to explore the local area and to start the c2c cycle. Being able to store the bikes in the conservatory was a massive bonus (and one of the many reasons we booked). Marie was a great host! Thoroughly recommended by us.

    Andrew2019-09-22T00:00:00Z
  • Marie was so helpful right from the word go, especially with restaurant recommendations! The annexe was lovely and very clean! We found the local menus and attraction brochures a great touch. In all, we had a great stay and hope to return!

  • Ideal for cyclists doing c2c

This house was built for a local iron ore mine in the 1890s. It looks out towards Ennerdale valley, in the Lake District Park, and a short path to the C2C cycleway. The location is quiet, with passing traffic for the farm only. Two double rooms, one with twin beds, are available, with a separate sitting room, with TV, for guests. It is a 10 minute walk to the centre of the village and frequent buses to Whitehaven, on the coast. Well situated for walking, cycling or business in West Cumbria.
Frizington is one of many villages in the west of Cumbria that thrived in the late 1800s and 1900s due to the rich mineral sources. Winder Gate is half a mile from the main village and was built as workers houses for Margaret Mine. From here it is a few miles into the National Park, but the roundabout road route takes 15-20 minutes, heading to the nearest valley, Ennerdale, and Ennerdale Lake, seven miles to walk around. South is Wasdale, where you can see the view voted the best in the country, looking up Wast Water, the deepest lake, towards the highest mountain in England and the smallest church. Nearby Eskdale has a steep windy route to the other side of the Lakes past a Roman hill fort. In Eskdale the Ravenglass and Eskdale Railway runs small narrow-guage trains from the coast into the hills. In the other direction are the more visited Loweswater, Crummock and Buttermere valleys, on the way towards Keswick, a bustling market town.

We are in the tranquil Western Lake District National Park close to the Coast to Coast bike route and with plenty of walking right from the door. Your comfortable ensuite bedroom and own breakfast / sitting room is upstairs so has gorgeous views across to woods and fells. The bedroom can be set up as two singles or one kingsize bed. We can provide a delicious basket of local and home-made food for a help-yourself- breakfast for £5 per person. There is parking and a garage for storing bikes.
The Lake District National Park was granted UNESCO World Heritage Status in 2017 and your accommodation makes an ideal base for exploring north-west Cumbria, or a peaceful location for a quiet retreat. Inside: Our front hallway has racks for shoes and boots - no outdoor shoes upstairs please. The shared stairs leads up to your rooms on the left and has its own lockable door. The bedroom has a comfortable kingsize bed or can be set as 2 singles which will be made up with fresh bedding . Towels are provided in the ensuite shower room along with shampoo and soap. The adjoining private breakfast and sitting room is well equipped having a fridge , toaster, kettle, microwave and a mini hob. There is a cafetière, crockery & cutlery, utensils and pans, plenty of storage space, tea, coffee and milk. If we've been making flapjack, you'll find some in the tin! There’s free Wi-fi, and there are plenty of local area maps, guides, books and board games for you to borrow during your stay. No TV! Phone reception is patchy, but can usually be found a few metres walk up the drive, depending on network. You can use our utility area downstairs which has a washer (washing powder provided), iron & ironing board, hanging space for drying clothes for and muddy walking boots and shoes. There is space in the garage for bikes and electric bikes can be charged overnight. Please note: Smoking / vaping is not permitted inside. Outside: I am slowly creating a wildlife friendly fruit and veg garden and in the surrounding fields, fells and woodland you may see deer, hares, red squirrels, foxes, hedgehogs, rabbits and a wide variety of bird life. The woods behind the cottage are home to woodpeckers, cuckoo and owls. In the spring and summer you will see the local farmers’ lambs and calves grazing in the fields. We face west and you are welcome to sit outside on our patio area and soak up the rays or watch the sun go down in the evening.
Water Board Cottages are in a beautiful rural location. 15 minutes walk will take you through quiet woods to the shores of Crummock Water with level walks round both sides and crystal clear water for wild swimming! Several of the Western Wainwright fells can be climbed from the door and Buttermere valley with it's lake, local icecream and popular village is 15 minute drive away. The Slate mine at Honister Pass is an exciting excursion and the pass gives access to the Borrowdale valley and Keswick. The C2C Cycleway and the Lakes Loop is 2 minutes away and there is a choice of gentle valley circuits or challenging mountain passes for keen cyclists. Whinlatter Forest Centre (10 mins drive) has a variety of mountain bike routes, wildlife walking routes and cafe. Our local award winning pub, The Kirkstile Inn is 15mins walk up the valley. It has great food and you will usually need to book to be sure of a table. Down the valley 2 miles in Low Lorton is The Wheatsheaf also popular for food in the summer. The nearest shop for basics / emergency supplies is 2 miles down the valley at our favourite Lorton Village Shop ( 9am -5pm, closed Sunday). There are larger supermarkets (Sainsbury’s, Aldi, Lidl - open: Mon to Sat, 8 - 8. Sun, 10 - 4) and independent bakers, greengrocers, butchers, fishmongers etc in Cockermouth. The nearest garage is on the A66 / A5086 roundabout, on the outskirts of Cockermouth. Nearest fast charge point for electric cars is Booths at Keswick. Ask us about charging overnight.
  • A fabulously comfy space with lots of lovely touches, including the scrumptious flapjack! Set in a wonderful location with great walks from the door and only 15 minutes walk from a great pub. Graham and Debbie were wonderful hosts and the breakfast was great value for money. Highly recommended as a base for exploring this stunning area.

  • Graham and Debbie were really friendly and very helpful. They gave us lots of great tips about local walks and cafes and lent us a map for the duration of our stay. The accomodation was very clean and comfortable in a great location. Only a mile to the lovely Kirkstile Inn and beautiful views of the hills. Thanks so much Graham and Debbie. Wonderful hosts xx

  • Graham and Debbies hospitality was amazing. Would highly recommend a stay here. The accommodation is lovely and in an area of outstanding beauty

    Susan2020-02-02T00:00:00Z
  • Debbie and Graham's place is perfect in each sense. The location is splendid with views the the mountains right from the bedroom window. The place has all the amenities you could ask for for your stay and that makes it all the more special. It is one of those places where you could visit and disconnect from the world (if you so wish to). Debbie and Graham are lovely hosts. They are so easy to talk to. They made the check in and check out process a breeze. Also, one of the best parts were Debbie's flapjacks. Delicious in each bite. We would definitely stay there again.

  • Graham & Debbie's place was perfect for exploring the north-western Lakes. It was very well presented, with fantastic views. The bed was comfy and the shower hot, just what we wanted after a day in the fells. Would recommend, thank you!

Explore the West Lakes, Fells and coast and stay in our old coal miner's cottage. Your sunny bedroom is up the steep stairs, tucked under the eaves with a view over the slate roofs towards the Lake District Fells. All ingredients provided for a help-yourself breakfast. C2C cyclists- space for bikes. Safe parking for motorbikes. Good Bus service.
Canary Cottage is one of a short row of coal miners' cottages dating from the mid 1800's when Great Clifton was a colliery. The cobbled lane outside used to be the main way through from the fields to the farm yard for the cows. The lane now leads onto the village playing field with views over pasture and woods towards the sea. Your bedroom has free wifi and you are welcome to make drinks whenever you like in the kitchen. We do not have a TV but you are welcome to borrow from our many books if you want to spend time alone quietly.
Between mountains and coast Great Clifton is an ideal place from which to explore The Lake District National Park - only 6 miles away. The charming market towns of Cockermouth (Wordsworth House) and Keswick (market Saturday and Thursday)are easily accessible and Bassenthwaite Lake, Borrowdale and Skiddaw have walks and wildlife in abundance. The less well known coastline features historic ports and wild beaches stretching North to the Solway Firth. Or you could just take a ramble from the front door down to the peaceful banks of the River Derwent.

My wife and I had a very peaceful stay and would love to come again. Thank you so much for everything Barbara! We'll miss you...

  • Barbara is a fantastic, kindhearted and thoughtful host who made us feel welcome immediately. The room, bathroom and kitchen had everything we needed, and we had some lovely conversations over dinner. Her place is a bit outside of the Lake District, but it is quite easy to reach by car and public transport. We can only recommend Barnara's place!!

  • A very nice, well equipped and comfortable house. As we have a big car we used the on road parking, which is directly opposite the house. There was always plenty of space to park safely and this did not cause any problems. We definitely recommend and hope to stay again.

  • Neither 'show home' or 'designer' do Adam's beautiful place justice. A wonderful adaptation of an intriguing old building that is a comfortable, practical, and remarkably stylish gem in an unexpected location. As an airbnb user, it has everything you could need, and much more besides. I can't imagine many people would be willing to share such a home with strangers, yet Adam is a welcoming and relaxed host. Thank you!

My place, built in 1830, can be seen on the left of the main picture. It is close to Wainwrights Coast to Coast Walk, the sea, public transport, a brilliant fish & chip shop and a local store. You’ll love my place because you're close to coastal walks and sites of historical interest such as the industrial heritage sites of Whitehaven. The lake District National Park is within a few miles and the sunsets from my house are stunning..
Built in 1830 as housing for workers at the local mines. This cosy little house has views over the sea to Scotland from the front and at the back there's an open green grassy space with ample parking.
My home is a small terraced house, built in the 1830's near the cliff top, as a home for the workers in the local mines. It was owned for many generations by the same family and you can still see where they have carved their initials in the red sandstone surrounds of the rear entrance to my home. The area has a rich history in mining coal, anhydrite and iron ore and if you wish to go looking around the cliff top path, you will find many remains of the fascinating industrial history.
  • Whole experience has been top notch.Janet met me at whitehaven station as i had travelled up by train. She even took me shopping to a spar on the way (that had toilet roll!) .Dropped me at the cottage...showed me round and then left me to it. Cottage is lovely.Has everything you need. Its very comfortable and homely. The area surrounding it is stunning.if you like walking by the sea then come here. Thanks Janet.i hope to be back soon

  • Janet's place is located in a great location, in whitehaven. Stunning views over the sea and despite the bad weather we took our dog Coco for a lovely walk to Haig Mine and down to Whitehaven... just a 15 to 20 minute walk along the coast from Janet's cottage. The place itself was spotlessly clean, and very cosy... Janet even provided milk, tea, hot chocolate and coffee for our arrival. The chip shop around the corner was also a bonus! Janet's place was very special place, and great value!! We will definately be going back we felt very relaxed and at home here. If you're looking for somewhere to stay in Whitehaven, please consider here.

  • Gary was a lovely host and communicated very well with me. The apartment is a bit noisy, but this has been raised with Gary and he assured me that it would be sorted soon!

    Jodie2020-03-03T00:00:00Z

    Susy2019-11-29T00:00:00Z
  • This is a two bedroom flat with each room let out separately. It is in a fantastic location, right in the centre of Whitehaven, and consists of a large kitchen/diner/ lounge, separate toilet and shower, and the two bedrooms. It is up a flight of stairs but that leaves room for the wine bar downstairs. It's kept clean and tidy, and the facilities (cooker, oven, microwave and so on) are just right. Gary is a very helpful host. He's available to show how the central heading works, and tell me what's going on, and provides resident parking permits to allow you to park - but don't be misled, it's difficult to park in central Whitehaven unless you take the paid parking elsewhere (having said that, the All Day Car Park is only round the corner and very convenient for the usual places of work like Albion Square). I'm booking in regularly now because of its convenient location.

    Hugo2019-10-31T00:00:00Z
  • I was staying in Whitehaven for work and when I stumbled across this property, I thought that it was perfect - and it was! Very clean and perfectly situated near local amenities, the town centre and, of course, the beautiful Lake District. Gary was and is a friendly host who couldn't have been more helpful and attentive to my questions and needs. I highly recommend this property to anyone needing a cosy place to rest their head on the West coast!

The cottage is over 150 years old with walls 2 foot thick but has a very modern walk-in shower room and up to date kitchen. It is spacious, warm and homely - a veritable home away from home. All the basics that you may need are provided, including kitchen equipment, bedding, towels, soap, heating, lighting and power. There is a patio garden area to the rear of the cottage and off-street parking is available to the front.
Once you book the use of the cottage is yours. It is a cottage with character....on 2 floors but with small stairs leading here and there. There is a cosy, homely feeling. With thick walls it is cool in the summer and warm in winter, although guest-controllable central heating in winter adds to the cosines.
The cottage is in the centre of the village with 2 pubs, a post office and general store and a small bakery and general store, all in easy walking distance. The pubs generally only open towards the end of the week and weekends and are drinking establishments- not for food and meals. The nearest place for meals is the Broughton Craggs Hotel or the short drive to Cockermouth, which is full of a variety of pubs, restaurants and take-aways.

We are 1/4 mile from the village with its shops, pubs & restaurants. The cottage is next door to the Red Admiral Pub, 3 miles from Seascale train station and the beach. Paul & Lucy offer a warm friendly welcome, we provide free wi-fi and breakfast.
Most days you can see Scafell Pike from the bedroom window and our friendly runner ducks in the garden. The room is fresh and clean, recently decorated and with a new radiator. The bathroom next door has a wonderful rain shower which our guests have really appreciated , especially after a day walking or cycling on the fells.
Gosforth is our village. It has a vibrant public hall with regular events - see website for details. The pubs provide good pub grub and we especially like the Wild olive for Italian food. We have a folder in the guest room with more details on restaurants/pubs/shops/churches/health centres etc
  • Great local knowledge, and great hospitality. The fresh bread and the ducks were a highlight! See you again!

  • I had a wonderful stay with Paul and Lucy. The room is lovely and spotlessly clean with one of the most comfortable beds I have slept in! Tea and coffee and lots of little touches like hairdryer etc are provided in the room. Paul made a fresh loaf of bread for breakfast even though I was heading off at 6am! Paul and Lucy are fantastic hosts, really friendly and knowledgeable and generous. I hope to stay with them again. Location is beautiful and the room is great value. Highly recommended!

  • First time visiting the Lake District couldn't have been more perfect. Communication was on point as was my stay. Breakfast was lovely and provided the energy to hike to the summit of Scafell Pike, Paul printed out the weather report so I could keep track. Cosy cottage, great food, reviving shower and comfy bed after a long hike. Ideal location to visit the Western and Southern Lakes. Will definitely be vising again.

  • It is set perfectly for the surrounding location to explore walking or cycling, the property is very warm & spacious with everything you may need.it is a haven to enjoy peace & tranquility. The village is a stones through with all the amenities you will need! Definitely worth a visit.

Great for short term business trips and contractors working in the area but also very suitable for tourists looking for affordable, practical & clean accommodation in this location.
Very well maintained and clean good value property in good location for hikers, runners & cyclists etc due to its close proximity to Nannycatch Valley & Dent Fell (Long Barrow), traditionally the first fell encountered by hikers following WAINWRIGHT’S COAST TO COAST WALK The Cleator Moor Cycle Way is used by the Coast to Coast path between Moor Row and Cleator, providing uninterrupted views over Dent and its environs. The cycle way is used just as much by walkers as cyclists and is a far nicer environment to walk in than the road would otherwise be.

  • Rachel feels like you are staying in a London hotel. Very nice extra touches. Fresh bread, butter and jams in the fridge. Milk and orange juice as well. I evened had Sky and Netflix! Separate private bathroom within the loft bedroom, again with plenty of towels and toiletries. If you are looking for a relaxing place to relax after a long day working or walking then look no further. Whitehaven is on your doorstep. I will book again.

  • Sally’s loft is like a 5 star hotel. Such a beautiful home and wonderful welcome by a lovely family. You have everything you need at Sally’s loft, it’s is stylish, comfortable and exceptionally clean. Parking was good and there are lots of places to explore on the coastline even if you are just staying over for onward travels. The bed is extremely comfortable, the shower is great and providing breakfast is a nice touch. I would highly recommend Sally’s loft for a one night stay or more.

The Vale of Lorton is one of the most beautiful and unspoilt areas of the Lakes, ranging from the flat farmland and Gem town of Cockermouth at one end to the rugged mountains and Buttermere at the other. The tranquil setting of The Spinney, above the River Cocker, with spectacular views over to Whinlatter, is an ideal location to explore the north western fells, lakes, towns and coast. In two acres of mature trees, gardens and river frontage, there’s an abundance of wildlife all year round.
The Spinney, a self-contained cottage style annexe of the main house, together form a 200 year old property built into the fellside above the River Cocker. The house was originally a painting house for a local artist. Through the stone pillars down the gravel drive, a private parking area for The Spinney is adjacent to the property. A few stone steps down to the south facing French doors is where you enter into the open plan living/dining space – the kitchen with its lovely window seat and the relaxing seating area with the original sandstone fireplace and wood burning stove. Up the stairs off the landing there’s a double bedroom with king-size bed and beautiful views across the valley. A split level bathroom and single bedroom complete the upstairs area. The gardens have colour across the seasons. In spring there are thousands of daffodils and bluebells to complement the rhododendrons and azaleas with other colourful blooms flowering throughout the year. During the day there’s invariably something going on in terms of gardening, renovation or general maintenance but we try to be discrete. Red squirrels, hares, and deer are regularly seen along with a plethora of garden birds, pheasants, buzzards, ducks and herons. Away from the hustle and bustle of everyday life, you can hear the birds sing, the breeze in the trees, the sheep murmuring and the river gurgling where you can fish or just sit in peaceful seclusion.
Gateway to the north western Lake District, Lorton has a village shop with excellent coffee, essentials and craft gifts. There's a pub and a thriving village hall with different activities most days. There's two all weather tennis courts and we're on a C2C route.

A small, stunning lodge set in a private, wooded, estate nestled on the fringes of the Lake District and just 10 minutes drive from the Coast. It is the perfect weekend retreat, after a day out exploring our National Park, you can come back to the lodge and relax in our outdoor hot tub (for a small fee) or light the fire pit in your own private space and enjoy the peace and tranquility that Rheda has to offer. Alternatively, pop down to one of our locals for a traditional Cumbrian meal.
The lodge is fully modernised for your convenience. We have free wifi, a large screen digital television, the latest coffee machine serving fresh coffee and latte's and a fridge to keep those beverages cold. A BBQ is available for use in your own private rear garden. There will be an additional charge of £25 for exclusive use of the hot tub, bookable in advance. This fee includes luxury robes and towels. Please ensure you bring suitable footwear such as flipflops to ensure that your feet are kept clean prior to entering the hot tub.
The lodge is set in our garden in a private wooded estate. Red squirrels and roe deer are regular visitors to the estate and the woods are abundant with lots of bird species too. As evening approaches you can sit and watch as the pipistrelle bats leave their roosts to feed on insects. As this is a private estate, there are few cars and therefore less noise. There is no street light pollution so on a clear night you get a beautiful view of the starlit sky.
  • Thanks to Vanessa and Andy for a wonderful relaxing stay in the Lake District. The lodge was compact yet perfectly formed and kitted out with more than expected. We were worried we'd get cold in there facing stormy wintery weather, but we were toasty warm using the heater and winter duvet on the comfy sofa bed. The lodge was absolutely spotless with great access to a private courtyard to the rear and a few steps to the hot tub at the front. Plastic glasses at the ready and adorable homemade cupcakes our winter hot tub excursion was just brilliant. Nothing was too much trouble for the hosts, Vanessa was just wonderfully welcoming and helpful with local knowledge, takeaway recommendations and kept us fully informed about our stay. Our golden retriever was grateful for the adventures around the large garden to the house and very pleased we were allowed so much freedom with him. If we have a trip planned for the Lakes again we'll definitely come back!

  • Vanesa is great. From the first moment she answered all my questions and concerns. On the day of the arrival she received us to explain all the details of the cabin. The cabin is very cute and has everything you need to spend a couple of days. The hot tub is great and is right in front of the cabin. It is easy to access the beach and lakes. Also, it is a very quiet area where you can relax outside the noise of the city. Our only concerns were the sofa bed that for our taste was a bit uncomfortable and the lack of shower, but Vanesa provided us with the entrance to the shower in her house. Thanks for everything! We will return without a doubt!

    Raquel2020-02-23T00:00:00Z
  • Very clean and well equipped lodge that catered for all of our needs while visiting the lakes. Both Vanessa and Andy were happy to help with any questions or queries which we presented to them. Overall fantastic stay!

  • Lovely little garden lodge, really warm and stylishly done out. Vanessa and her family were exceptionally welcoming and allowed us use of their personal facilities when needed and even invited us to their New Years Eve party which was lovely. Hot Tub is a great little touch and it's a lovely little base to enjoy the splendid scenery of the Lake District xx

    Joanne2020-01-01T00:00:00Z

  • Maria's place was lovely and clean and perfect for my short break. She was most help with communication and me arriving later than planned. The room and bathroom were flawless with the added relaxing bonus of a huge fishtank in the room which was a nice touch! Would stay again and recommend for anyone visiting the area.

  • A really lovely room, warm and comfortable, and very convenient for the Science and Technology Park (only about 2 miles, another advantage is that half of this is away from the traffic). Lovely to come back to after working hard all day . In two nights I enjoyed the chippy (had to stay in for a conference call) and the Globe pub (almost directly opposite). The fish are active if silent - companionable without disturbing anything. Hosts are friendly and helpful if you need them, out of the way if you don't. Very convenient and I'll book again

    Hugo2019-10-04T00:00:00Z
